Sole Survivor Christmas Headcanons

I was tagged by @ariejul!  Took me a while to answer these, but hopefully you guys enjoy my foray into Nora Wilson’s life this time of year.

1. What’s your Sole’s general attitude toward Christmas before and after the apocalypse? Are they religious?

Nora loved Christmas pre-apocalypse, like anyone else.  Her grandparents, who half raised her, always made a big deal out of the holidays, so it was a special time for her.  After Nate got drafted, they only got to spend one Christmas in four years together -- the Christmas of 2077 was supposed to be a new beginning for them, so her Christmas of 2287 was pretty awful (that was about the time she managed to track down Kellogg...).  The next year was shortly after destroying the Institute, so not much better.  She’d like to reenact the sort of magical Christmas her grandparents used to give her, especially for her children, but life as General of the Minutemen tends to ruin that. The simple answer is that Nora is religious, in the sense that she believes in a higher power and all that.  She fell away from the rituals of Irish Catholicism her grandfather instilled in her as she grew up, but held onto the spirituality.

2. What are their childhood memories about Christmas holidays? What did they get as presents from their family and/or friends?

Nora used to love snow -- not so fond of the cold now (Vault 111 and no central heating will do that to you).  One of her most memorable gifts was a small silver music box her grandfather gave her when she was eight that played Cinderella’s Waltz, a song she later danced to as a prima ballerina.  The box survived the apocalypse and she keeps it next to other mementos, like the wooden soldier MacCready gave her.  Up until she passed, her mother always took her somewhere as a gift -- professional ballets, snowy cabins in the woods, the mountains, that sort of thing.  She cherishes all those trips with her mother and the few surviving photographs from them. 3. What was Christmas like with their spouse/partner and other members of their family? What presents would they get and give to each other?

Nate and Nora’s families got on well so Christmas after they married was always a double-family affair.  Nate and Nora, Nora’s grandparents, Nate’s parents, and his younger brother and whoever he was dating then.  Even after Nate was drafted, they made sure to get together and remind Nora that they all loved her.  Nora’s grandmother and her father-in-law were the cooks and went all out on Christmas Eve. 

As a kid, Nora was notorious for two particular gifts -- hideous knitted scarves (she never got the hang of straight rows) or made-up ballets dedicated to the recipient.  The first year Nate spent in the Army, she did knit him another scarf, slightly less ugly, that he happily wore underneath his Power Armor for years.

4. What presents would your Sole give to their companions/friends in the Commonwealth?

Although she didn’t really celebrate Christmas of 2288, she did leave everyone small presents in honor of the old holiday.  Patchwork quilts for the kids and babies, including her own, old technical manuals for Sturges, a new scarf for Preston like she once gave Nate.  A handwritten thank you letter to Nick because, as an Old World soul, he’d appreciate that sort of thing; books for Piper and Deacon, Grognak comics for MacCready.  Lots of little things she finds as she travels and hoards for her best people.

5. What other Sole that you know would they like to kiss under mistletoe?

There are far too many Soles that Nora would enjoy meeting.  She’s a people person in some ways, so a party might be in order.  Perhaps a friendly legal debate (one former prosecutor to a former defense attorney) with Kaelyn Prescott or a “let’s sit down and you can tell me how to deal with Deacon” session with Julia Rickson.  Definitely a book exchange with fellow Mama Yao Guai Nora Bowman and her massive brood.  No kissing because the Pendletons might get ideas ;-)

‘HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!’

Kaelyn opened her eyes to find Nate standing in front of the table, presenting what he thought to be a fine assortment of gourmet cuisine. What she actually found herself staring at were plates of small snack cakes, thin strips of Cram, and little chunks of Salisbury Steak with toothpicks in them, all served on individual dishes around the table.

In the middle of the table were two larger plates, both with domed metal cloches – the kind found in swanky, upscale restaurants – plopped on top.

Kaelyn took a strip of Cram and stared at it, the rubbery texture shining in the light. With a forced smile, she turned to Nate.

‘I love it’ she said unconvincingly, watching as Nate sighed.

‘Yeah, the hors d’oeuvres didn’t go to plan…’ he admitted, taking a piece and sniffing it suspiciously, struggling to keep a straight face as he did. ‘But the dog can have those.’

No sooner had he said the word “dog” than the large German shepherd bounded into the room, barking happily at being called. He grew more excitable when Nate placed the plate on the floor, sniffing at his feet for a few moments before devouring the Cram strips.

Kaelyn watched, her expression incredulous.

‘He never comes when I call him…’

She held out the strip of meat and waved it around, trying desperately to get the dog’s attention. He looked over at her, turned his head to one side, and continued with his feast.

‘The dog loves me more, remember?’ said Nate with a triumphant expression.

Kaelyn narrowed her eyes as they sat at the table, watching him with a withering glare. She decided to let his comment – however true – slide for the moment as he held the cloches eagerly, like a performer about to get on stage.

‘I promised this would be a romantic gourmet meal you would never forget,’ he began, Kaelyn adjusting herself in her seat as her interest was piqued. ‘A culinary experience to last a lifetime…’

Kaelyn gripped the edge of the table in suspense as Nate, master orator that he was, set the scene perfectly.

‘May I present to you…’ he said, pausing for effect before lifting the cloches to reveal… ‘BLAMCO MAC AND CHEESE!’

Kaelyn’s shoulders sagged slightly as she stared at the cheesy mess of pasta garnished with badly-chopped herbs. She turned to Nate, only to see his expression drop.

‘I know, I know,’ he said. ‘It may look bad… but it’s the taste that counts!’

He grabbed a fork and poked at a piece of macaroni before popping it into his mouth. His face contorted as he bit down with an audible crunch and Kaelyn bit her lip to hold back laughter.

He stubbornly swallowed the macaroni.

‘Well…?’ she asked, her tone matching the mischievous glint in her eye.

He was about to defend his disastrous meal but deflated as he accepted his defeat.

‘I’ll call for takeout…’ he said eventually, shuffling over to the phone.

The takeout containers thrown in the trash, the pair flopped side-by-side onto the sofa, Kaelyn leaning on Nate’s shoulder as they watched the TV.

As the Valentine’s Day special of The Unstoppables finished, Kaelyn felt a nervous flutter in her stomach and worked up the courage to share what had been on her mind all day.

‘Honey,’ she said, moving away from him to look him in the eyes. ‘I knew you were planning the meal so I wanted to get you something too.’

She went over to the counter and took a small envelope from her bag before offering it to him. Nate eyed it curiously as he opened it, giving her impish side-glances.

‘Oh, I wonder what you could’ve gotten me!’ he said as he took the card out of the envelope, flipping it over in his hands to look at the cover. ‘Could it be a Valent-‘

He stopped, completely motionless as he stared at the words. Kaelyn watched him, tears beginning to well.

‘I’m gonna be a dad…?’ he whispered eventually, turning to her, his eyes wide.

She nodded and he wasted no time in wrapping her in a tight embrace. Tears flowed freely down her cheeks and onto Nate’s t-shirt. He moved away slightly, enough to wipe the tears from her face and look at her properly.

‘I love you,’ she said, returning the gesture by wiping away the single tear slowly falling down Nate’s cheek. ‘We’re gonna be a proper little family now. Me, you, and him.’

She put a hand to her belly and he laid a hand gently over hers.

‘Him?’ he asked with a smile. ‘It’s a boy?’

‘Our boy,’ she replied, taking his hand. ‘Our little Shaun…’

They stood there in the middle of the room and gazed into each other’s eyes, the world drifting by and becoming a distant memory.

The first character you loved:

Paladin Danse - The moment I saw him in power armour firing lasers I was impressed, and I hoped he could be a companion! I took Haylen at her word that he was a good man and travelling with him proved that! It was also nice to meet another friendly group after Preston’s!

Cullen - I’ve always played a mage and my mage warden thought he was adorable, my mage Hawke was a bit salty but overall okay with him and my Inquisitor fell in love with him! Throughout all the games I was hoping for the chance and was so happy to not only romance but marry and adopt a mabari with him in DAI! 

Farkas - He’s a big, strong warrior with a gentle heart! Also a werewolf at first - what’s not to love? XD

The character you never expected to love so much

Gage - He’s a raider, while Nora’s the General and Sentinel. She’s moral, he’s not and he doesn’t seem her type at all - but there’s still chemistry there and even when they’re just friends, leaving aside their very differing methods at times, the pair get along! I was heartbroken when she had to kill him during Nuka World, but currently rewriting with a friend so XD

Sera - Not going to lie, when I first met her I thought she was the height of annoying. I didn’t like the way she spoke in riddles and didn’t take her anywhere, but when I gave her the chance I just fell in love - she’s hilarious, knows how to have fun and honestly I agree with her so much on sticking it to the nobles!

Miraak - At first he was just a villain you’ve got to beat, but when I realised he and Danse share the same VA I looked more into him and the cut content and - yeah. Would totally have sided with him over Mora if I could! He’s a lot more pitiable, not to mention he’d have made Marcurio look humble if he was a companion! I also headcanon he looks like Danse now too so XD

The character you relate to the most

Danse - I totally understand the burying your feelings part and I just really resonate with him. He might take things too seriously at times, but his heart is in the right place! His awkwardness in romance also rivals mine so yeah!

Cassandra - Same reasons as Danse and maybe even more so! XD She’s just amazing and I love how despite her serious personality, she’s always loved and wanted romance and is loyal and there for her friends, plus she changes her stance as she learns things like she comes to befriend Cole and regrets what happened between her and Varric! Seriously love her! 

Maybe Vilkas - idk I don’t think the characters were written with any real depth in game as a lot of it is radiant dialogue or a couple of lines, so I can’t really say!  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 

The character you’d slap

Arl Howe - He had no regrets whatsoever for everything he did in DAO and even when he’s dying and he says “I deserved more” I’m just like “more pain?” >:( 

Elenwen - she fronts the Thalmor interests in Skyrim, need I say more?

Sera - went from couldn’t stand her to thinking she’s brilliant!
