Darwin's Game Review!

Hi, everyone! Welcome to a new anime review! In this one, I'll be reviewing Darwin's Game!

So, Darwin's Game was adapted from a manga in 2020, meaning it's still really recent. It's a killing game anime, so the main themes are action, mystery, survival, and sci-fi. It's a pretty common (and effective) combo.

Before anything, I'd like to state that this anime resembles Mirai Nikki (Future Diary) in more than one way. I'm not going to say they copied it since it's still a little different, but I wouldn't be surprised if it served as inspiration for this manga/anime.

Okay, with this out of the way, the plot: it's okay. Not spectacular at all, but I enjoy survival games, so it didn't bore me. Still, I didn't feel like the pacing was all that great, so I got lost on a couple of occasions (especially from one episode to another).

This anime's cast of characters is saved by the main characters, and even them aren't amazing. The protagonist is decent, which is also the case for a few other characters, but most are boring and forgettable. The antagonist sucks (stereotypical).

I read some people say they loved the MC's character development, but I have to slightly disagree. Sure, it was entertaining, but not original in the slightest. The other characters get no development whatsoever.

Something fun about this anime is the dynamics between the characters, at least. They're a nice group, and they're better as a whole than on their own, clearly.

This anime's art looks average, but the animation during the action scenes is quite neat! It's not elite, but still good enough for me to mention it.

Musically, Darwin's Game is forgettable. No tracks really come to mind when I think of this anime, unfortunately. However, the opening is very good and sounds great. It's fitting, too.

Overall, this anime, without being very good, is still decent, in my opinion. It's clearly not finished, but will it ever get a second season? I think it could be interesting, but I have no idea if there are any plans for a sequel.

If you like survival games, you'll have fun watching this! Otherwise, it may not be for you. It's up to you!

3) What ship(s) captured your heart?

Well... if it wasn't obvious... Kaigami has a vicegrip on me XD

Other contenders include Minedai, Sugiura/Higashi, Tigerfish (Saejima/Nishiki), and Kazumaji (although I'm VERY PARTICULAR with that ship)

Tho I do respect both Kuwagami and Kiryu/Hanawa, because something gay DEFINITELY happen, I just don't know what

7) What character(s) captured your heart?

Well... the 5 blorbos (Majima, Akiyama, Daigo, Yagami, Sugiura) are always rotating in my head.

As for non-blorbos, I have to give the reins to Mine (Survive!Mine is a big part of that, but I digress), Nanba, and Kaito. All of their perspectives are very fun to write :)

21) Share your favorite piece of dialogue

So that I don't rip everyone's hearts out a third time...

Kashiwagi waves at him from behind the bar, and Mine focuses on him and his small smile.

“You really should try the hair-down look one day. I think it'd suit you, and it'd help to change things up once in a while.”

Mine blows a strand of said hair out of his face in lieu of a vocal response. He had been meaning to get his hair cut, but he wasn't in the state to get to the hair salon, nor did either of them own a vehicle.

“Maybe one day. I'm going to get cleaned up in the meantime.”

Kashiwagi chuckles at his response.

“Suit yourself. Don't trip on your way there.”

Darwin’s Game manga officially ended today after nine years of serialization in Akita Shoten’s Bessatsu Shonen Champion. The final, 30th volume will be released on January 5, 2024, and will compile the final, 125th chapter. Next month’s issue of Bessatsu Shonen Champion will also feature a spin-off story, focusing on Rein Kashiwagi, who won the popularity poll held in November of last year. To commemorate the final chapter, an illustration of Shuka was released:The Darwin’s Game manga by FLIPFLOPs duos, consisting of artist Yuki Takahata and writer Shu Miyama (Ginko), began serialization in January 2013 in the aforementioned magazine. In 2020, it received an anime adaptation by studio Nexus, with Yusuke Kobayashi, Reina Ueda, and Nichiki Omori in the main cast. Yoshinobu Tokumoto directed the anime, while Shu Miyama (writer of the FLIPFLOPs duo) wrote the script. The franchise also has a light novel, titled Darwin’s Game: Flag Game, written by Shu Miyama and illustrated by Tayaki Takaha. The manga has not been licensed in English yet.Funimation initially streamed the anime, which is now available on Crunchyroll in select regions. The streaming platform describes the plot as:Kaname Sudo, an ordinary high school student, receives an invitation email to try a mysterious app called “Darwin’s Game.” Kaname, upon launching the app, is drawn into a game where players fight one another using superpowers called Sigils.
