Tbr list that I will hopefully complete before the end of summer:
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus
The Orphan's Tales: In The Night Garden by Catherynne M. Valente
Keturah and Lord Death by Martine Leavitt
Maurice by E. M. Forster
The Book of Disquiet by Fernando Pessoa
Journey at the End of the Millennium by Abraham Yehoshua
The City of Brass by S. A. Chakraborty
and last but not least: Tehanu by Ursula K. Le Guin (the fourth book of the Earthsea Cycle - which I'm loving btw)
(In theory Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, Stardust by Neil Gaiman, and Il sentiero dei nidi di ragno by Italo Calvino are included in this list but let's be honest here, I will never manage to read those ones too before the end of August lmao)
Now, my favorite books from 2022 (at least so far):
Grendel by Josh Gardner (!!! i wasn't expecting it to be that great but omg. it really was. gorgeous prose + existential philosophy + tragic antivillain/antihero maneater monster as protagonist? i mean.)
Averno by Louise Glück
The Plague by Albert Camus
Hygiène de l'Assassin and Journal d'Hirondelle by Amélie Nothomb (batshit insane stuff. 100% recommended)
Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen (unhinged fictional women my beloveds <3)
Salomé by Oscar Wilde (unhinged fictional women my beloveds <3 part 2)
Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (ditto part 3)
The Hours by Micheal Cunningham
An Oresteia by Aeschylus, Sophokles, and Euripides (translated by Anne Carson) (and yes, that's where the famous "it's rotten work" "not to me. not if it's you" comes from lmao. also family drama and greek tragedies <3)
technically L'amica geniale/My Brilliant Friend saga by Elena Ferrante (my beloved!!) although that was a reread. but this time I appreciated it even more so I'm including it in the list

I trust ur taste in books, so can you recommend some? 🥺🥺🥺
yes absolutely!! this turned out obnoxiously long so i'm putting it under a read more
at this point you definitely all know about 2 of my favourite series, the queen's thief and the locked tomb
on the jellicoe road, also by melina marchetta. my fav ya contemporary, about a girl at a boarding school in the australian bush trying to figure out where she comes from, where she belongs and how to heal. marchetta's writing style can be a little difficult to get into for some people but she really really does it for me.
while tqt is my #1 favorite series, my 2nd favourite is melina marchetta's lumatere chronicles which is both kinda dark and full to the brim with love and hope and healing. some of my fav characters ever are in these books and the ending is so warm and radiant it straight up made me weep. some tw's that i go into here
the darkest part of the forest by holly black. ya fantasy. she wrote this specifically for girls who absolutely would've bargained years of their life away to the faerie king to become a monster-hunting knight when they were 11. black's magnum opus.
the girl who drank the moon by kelly barnhill. mg fantasy about a little girl who is accidentally given magical powers by a friendly bog witch. reads like a ghibli movie.
this is how you lose the time war by amal el-mohtar and max gladstone. a lyrical and devastatingly beautiful epistolary sci-fi wlw love story about 2 enemy time travellers.
abhorsen/old kingdom trilogy by garth nix. a ya fantasy classic about grief, duty, dead things and primordial cats and dogs. definitely holds up.
tess of the road by rachel hartman. ya fantasy. one of the best books i've read this year, had me completely emotionally invested by chapter 2. tess is SUCH a good character and her arc is so beautifully done. a companion novel/future series to hartman's seraphina duology but imo you don't need to read them first to enjoy this (you can ofc, but while the 1st (seraphina) is a really good scholarly fantasy about identity and also dragons, the 2nd (shadowscale) sadly didn't do much for me). tw for sexual assault (recounted as a memory, not graphic) and religious abuse.
the colours of madeleine by jaclyn moriarty. young ya/older mg contemporary portal fantasy. i picked these up on a whim a couple years ago and didn't expect much from them but was very pleasantly surprised by how fun and original they are. i reread them this summer and they're just as good the 2nd time around.
in other lands by sarah rees brennan. ya portal fantasy deconstruction. it's borderline satire and one of the funniest books i've ever read but it's also very sincere and intelligent in how it deals with its main character and his struggles.
middlegame by seanan mcguire. fantasy/sci-fi. honestly could not explain the plot of this book to you or why it's so good but there's psychically linked alchemically engineered twins who have various and sundry powers and i loved it.
sunshine by robin mckinley. paranormal urban fantasy. another book that i cant really explain but love anyway. i mean it's in the very general neighbourhood of "vampire romance" but like... weirder and frankly whatever you're expecting it to be it's probably not that.
keturah and lord death by martine leavitt. fairytale-like and haunting. every hades and persephone retelling wants what this book has.
the scorpio races by maggie stiefvater. her iconic standalone horsegirl fantasy <3 deeply atmospheric and about how being stuck on an unspecified celtic island in an unspecified but vaguely modern time could understandably be enough to drive you to fuck around with the local carnivorous water horses.
braiding sweetgrass by robin wall kimmerer. honestly if i could make everyone read just one book off this list it would be this one.
lab girl by hope jahren. beautifully written memoir about life, love and botany. one of my fav nonfiction books.

Reminisce of the time a few years ago I hunted for these books like a hawk because goodreads rec. them to me. These were quite hard to get and some I regretted having acquired them lol.
Here some of the titles
The Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope. I love this one. Very Rereadable. I also like her other book, the Sherwood ring. No regrets on these
An Earthly knight by Janet McNaughton. Nope DNF. (I was in Tam lin phase then lol but this one I shall passed) Regrets!
Mara, Daughter of the Nile by Eloise Jarvis McGraw. This is so fun. I may reread sometimes in the future.
The Raging Quiet by Sherryl Jordan. I like the book fine but will not reread.
Time enough for drums by Ann Rinaldi. Right this was interesting for me but as the internet keep telling me the age gap in this one is bothering me a lot.
Keturah and lord death by Martine Leavitt. I couldn't really get pass the MC self consciousness and the way the story was told. Regrets!
Summers at castle auburn by Sharon Shinn. I love her Archangel book. (1 st book only) and this one also supposed to be without flaws. Only there are quite a few of issues that disturb me.
The Hollow kingdom by Claire B. Dunkle. Hmm will not reread. On the stockholm syndrome note.
A Face like glasses by Frances Hardinge. Was glued to the pages literally. Could not put it down. Felt the same thrills reading these like when I read Garth Nix's keys to the kingdom. Might reread but y'know it won't be like the first time ever again.
Dragon's bait by Vivian Vande Velde. Felt like a cliffhanger with no second book. Not that interesting. Regrets
11. The Blue sword by Robin Mckinley. Can't say I regret this but I'd felt that this should have been better. Not to mention the weird prequel book that I won't reread again.
12. The Belgariad series by David Eddings. Loved these while it lasted. I got bored with the second series. Not rereadable to me.
13. The Changeover by Margaret Mahy. Like it. Not gonna reread.
14. The Changeling sea by Patricia A. Mckillip. I regreted that this was the first Mckillip book I'd ever come across. Dreamy but not engaging. My favorite of hers are the forgotten beast of Eld, In the forest of Serre, the Riddlemaster series, and Winter rose.
15. War for the Oaks by Emma Bull. Very entertaining. I love it. Haven’t reread this since.
16. Song of the lioness series by Tamora Pierce. I was undecided about these. Well I like the Immortals better than this one. Trickster duology impressed me the most. Not regret these but still haven’t reread them.
17. Sabriel by Garth Nix. Special to me because I read this first on audiobook. What a thrilling experience. I was so crazy about the Abhorsen lore for months. Haven’t reread also.
18. Wildwood dancing by Juliet Merrilier. I was crazy about nearly all of her books for a time. Reread this along with Heart’s blood and Daughter of the forrest many times. It was good but didn’t really hold up to now.
19. Enchanted forest chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede. Like but not love. I like Mairelon’s books better or even the sorcerer and cecelia book.
20. Crown duel by Sherwood Smith. Love the books though Mel’s impulsiveness irked me lots of time. The starts of my obsession with her Sartorias-deles saga. Too many books with vastly different target audience, I gave up trying to read them all at some point lol. Love banner of the damned and the Inda books though.
21. Sally Lockhart’s series by Philip Pullman. Yeah I like his spectacular HDM but I like these more. Sally is so cool. No regrets.
22. The Black magician triology by Trudi Canavan. Used to be my guilty pleasure. because of the ending I will not reread.
23. The Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb. Love these and the third trilogy also. Regret reading the second. Won’t reread because it was too painful. Also if I could one day reread them, I might continue with the series.
24. Earthsea cycle. By Ursula K. Le Guin. Favorite series. Reread many times. Will continue to recommend them.
25. Mistborn series. By Brandon Sanderson. Love these but won’t reread because I can’t go thru all of that again.
26. The chronicle of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander. Read on audiobook. Like them but haven’t reread since.
27. Lumatere chronicles by Melina Marchetta. So intense lol, it was good but I won’t go thru all that again.
30. Tales from the flat earth by Tanith lee. Did not regret. So dark and arabian-ish. I especially love Simmu’s stories and Chuz. Her B&B retelling in Red as blood is also my fav. So unique. But I regret buying her Claidi’s journals and Paradys books.
31. I, Coriander by Sally Gardner. So pretty cover. The stories was good for my teen years. Did not reread since.
32. A Company of swans by Eva Ibbotson. Gosh this was unexpectedly cute. So many weird things but still it works for me. Haven’t reread.
33. The Ivy tree by Mary Stewart. This book lied to me! I was so obsessed with the pseudo amnesia thing. First read on audiobook. One time is enough because the suspense can be experienced only one time.
34. The Seer and the sword by Victoria Hanley. Regrets. The plot was supposedly engaging but I couldn’t care less.
35. The Blue castle by L.M. Montgomery. Beautiful prose. Like the plot very much. Now if I could really find the time to read Anne of green gables.
36. Book of a thousand days by Shannon Hale. Nice. Can’t remember much but I like this enough to draw a doodle. I like her Austenland better. That was hilarious.
37. Narnia books by C.S. Lewis. I love these esp. the Dawn trader one. Haven’t reread yet.
39. The savage Damsel and the dwarf by Gerald Morris. Funny. I remembered that much.
Other books I regret are The books of Pelinor by Alison Croggon. Darkangel triology by Meredith Ann Pierce. Knight and Rogue by Hilari Bell, A college of magics by Caroline Stevermer, Riverside by Ellen Kushner.

question time!
tagged by the ever-lovely @mvcreates and the delightful @karenpage <3
1. how tall are you? 5′4″; i’m smol but fighty
2. what color and style is your hair? as dark brown as you can get without actually hitting black. i shaved it all off in 2017, but it grows stupid fast, so right now it’s just past my shoulders. i got bored this past summer and now the last three.....four.....ish inches have been fried bleached light blonde so i can fuck around with color!
3. what color are your eyes? brown w/some green thrown in for fun
4. do you wear glasses? yep!
5. do you wear braces? i had braces in middle school after years and years of a retainer to fix my Extremely Fucked Up teeth after i smashed my face into, in no particular order, an airport “will your carry on fit” box, a monkey bar platform, and an arena wall. i swear i’m not actually that accident-prone! kid me just went really, really hard all the goddamn time
6. what is your fashion style? i live in leggings and flannel; lots of black, lots of plaid, and also lots of sweatshirts. when i’m not rocking that pnw hipster aesthetic, i’m probably decked out in hockey stuff. shoe-wise, either docs, converse, or Aggressively Fancy Heels
7. full name? [redacted]
8. when were you born? ‘92
9. where are you from and where do you live now? pnw! and now i’m hanging out in the inland northwest
10. what school do you go to? i did my time at a small liberal arts college w/pretentions of sporting relevance
11. what kind of student are you? i’m a phenomenal student when my brain isn’t actively fucking me over; when it is, i’m [static noises] and “extensions pls” all over the damn place
12. do you like school? yeah! i regret not being more functional during my years at college, but i’m looking forward to someday getting my shit together and going back for an mfa
13. what are your favorite school subjects?  H I S T O R Y!!!!!!!! also english/literature/writing/what have you
14. favorite TV shows? uh. the punisher, sons of anarchy, hell on wheels, leverage, miss fisher’s murder mysteries, and also buzzfeed unsolved (i blame @karenpage )
15. favorite movies? THE MUMMY. also pacific rim, atonement, and patton. oh wAIT, ALSO CLUE!!! goddammit, also lit. everything miyazaki has ever produced.
16. favorite books? how dare you ask me something like this! there’s no way to definitively pick, but here, have a selection: his dark materials, the song of the lioness quartet, ella enchanted, an inquiry into love and death, yume no hon, bone map, all the pretty horses, the things they carried, vampires in the lemon grove, everything in this country must, keturah and lord death, and here, bullet
17. favorite pastime? reading, writing, horseback riding, mechanical maintenance (cars, planes, boats, motorcycles, etc.), and listening to bruce springsteen music. ALSO HOCKEY.
18. do you have any regrets? m a n y.
19. dream job? someone pays me money to write words
20. would you like to get married someday? hard pass.
21. would you like to have kids someday? even harder pass.
23. do you like shopping? absolutely yes, except for the part where i have no money
24. what countries have you visited? usa, iceland, and england! hoping to visit many more, but there’s that whole “money” thing again
25. what’s the scariest nightmare you’ve ever had? oh fuck, the one where i was trapped in my first grade classroom with so many snakes you couldn’t see the floor, just a writhing, hissing carpet of snakes. jesus fucking christ, so many snakes.
26. do you have any enemies? lmao, probably
27. do you have an s/o? nope!
28. do you believe in miracles? right now? no. maybe someday.

i know it sounds awfully generic but most of the time the movies and shows i prefer are just the ones that grab my interest. character-driven stories are my favorite but if it’s done well plot-filled and action movies/shows can be extremely good too. i also very much appreciate the cinematography, music, and direction, so much that i can watch and enjoy movies only for that. in some cases, like in schindler’s list and la la land the music is so beautiful it can be distracting and yet so carefully chosen it simply immerses me in the scenes.
when it comes to books i enjoy the writing above all. even the most interesting, unique concept will fall short if the writing is contrived and the execution poor. i prefer prose poetry but the themes and messages conveyed in the books are what really captivates me.
the couples i ship are usually relationships that allow me to explore certain dynamics i find intriguing—either because of the writing or the chemistry between the actors/actresses—and that further the general plot or their individual characterization. i tend to to be more intrigued by enemies to lovers and gothic romance but it’s mostly the complexity of the relationships that fascinate me.

“The rebel in me loves to throw dirt in the face of decorum.” (From @tiredofhardtack if you feel like it)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Keturah had always been likened to birds as a testament to her free spirit and big heart, but she was aware of the decorum asked of her by courts and peers alike. The brunette didn't find herself superior for the want to buck the system every once in a while. There were reasons women loved beautifully sewn dresses and waltzes on a summer night. Daeron was a handsome and well respected man in his own right. It was probably less than dignified to be alone with him. Yet, neither of the two seemed bent on separating themselves so quickly. One's rank could be cause for respect and reason enough for most. The corset bound heart in her chest had sky rocketed when he was near for the mere alluring kindness and wit he held. Always a person to put warmth in her bones and listen to her mind. A good man was more the reason the stubborn girl held him in her own high esteem. Bending to gather one of the wild flowers that her mother had planted months ago in the sweltering heat, the girl spared a grinning glance to the males direction. No one spoke of rebellion in good society. Brains were not as wanted. Don't fly away from the path you are supposed to walk. Hearing someone else having a spirit that was unbroken and some how not wholly filled in the wake of the box expected. The reason for the flippant words was unknown to her in the stillness of the muggy air. They were not unwelcome in the slightest. He never was with that side ways grin of his. Blonde hair long and halo like in less than ideal lighting. This man was friend first though it was hard not to be enamored. "Hmm- And what does this rebel spirit of you want, my lord? Adventure comes in many forms. I happen to know that large head of yours occupies a brain like none other. There is a reason that my moniker is dove. A bird does not stay on the dirt when their cage is open. I miss chasing you around like when we kids even when I had to have new dresses maid from thickets and mud itself. "

I was tagged by @blackbirdie1022 sorry it took me so long to get around to this!
Name: I prefer not to give out my real name and my pseudonyms are ever-changing. Right now I am going by Nelli (short for Nelipot…it is a real word!) Nicknames: Nelli (some of my irl friends call me Kettlecorn) Zodiac Sign: I am actually on the Taurus-Gemini Cusp, the Cusp of Energy. Woot. Height: 5'3" Orientation: ??? Some kinda gay. Thought I was panromantic asexual but now I’m thinking I may actually be pansexual? I recently went through some pretty dramatic emotional, spiritual, and ideological changes so idk what sort of psychological impact that is having. Maybe I am just not repressed anymore? Who knows. Nationality: American (multiracial kid)
Favorite fruit: Oranges! Although there is nothing like a good cantaloupe…or watermelon…or mango Favorite season: Autumn or summer…autumn for the melancholy beauty and summer for the get-off-your-a$$ and do something fun vibes Favorite book: Honestly this is like asking a mother of triplets to say which one she loves most. I have no solid favorite, but The Hobbit, The Book Thief, The InkHeart Trilogy, the Harry Potter Series, and Keturah and Lord Death are all contenders…and that’s just fiction… Favorite flower: hibiscus, dragon’s tongue, bluebonnets Favorite scent: lavendar, mint, freshly brewed coffee, cinnamon, molasses on warm homemade biscuits, wildflowers on a summer breeze, certain “men’s” colognes
Favorite color: purple, purple all the way Favorite animal: ALL OF THEM! but if I have to be really picky I guess just the furry ones and the cute reptiles and amphibians…although they are all cute. Honestly I think elephants are lovely, butterflies as well. (butterfly wings kind of mimic elephant ears…just noticed) Coffee, tea, or hot cocoa: It depends! I am a pretty frequent coffee drinker, though. Hot tea is for self-care and relaxation. Hot cocoa is for cozy cold nights with the family while watching The Polar Express. Average sleep hours: 3 - 5 a night lmao save me from insomnia Cat or dog person: I don’t discriminate. I adore dogs. I adore cats. I’ve only ever owned a dog because I was severely allergic to cats as a kid, but luckily I grew out of it!
Favorite fictional character: wow this is tough. Hermione Granger, Rue (the Hunger Games), and Matilda Wormwood. I also love Attitcus Finch and Madea. Number of blankets you sleep with: 2, my comforter and a quilt my mom made for me Dream trip: A trek through the European countryside, an exploration of India, and then finally making a home in New Zealand. Blog created: I honestly don’t know and I’m too lazy to check. I think summer two years ago. So probably July 2015. Number of followers: 103
I’m tagging @queerkitchenwitch @whitewit-ch @unmaskingthedivine @offaeriesandfawns @hecatewitch honestly I don’t even think these people are following me but I am doing this in mobile at 1 AM and this is who came to mind.
Love you all!
Edit: I'm adding @spudles @blurred--dream and @positive-platypus ❤❤❤

SA: How did you get your start in music? RT: I started singing in choirs as a very young kid. I grew up singing in church and in choral groups all through grade school and high school while also taking classical voice lessons. Once in high school though, I really got into classic rock music and decided to picked up a guitar. From there I started singing and playing guitar and bass in a number of different blues, rock, soul and metal bands. I was hooked. Music got put on the back burner a bit for me after high school, but a couple years ago I was laid off from my day job and my wife and best friend convinced me to give music another go and I’ve been doing it ever since.
SA: What bands would you cite as biggest influences on your sound? RT:  My first big musical influence was Jimi Hendrix. His music was the first time in any sort of popular music where my mind was blown by the obvious love of writing music and making it something completely your own. It was such an expression of himself. My biggest influence on my music right now would definitely be Tom Waits. I’m also really heavily influenced by Dan Mangan, Shakey Graves, Nina Simone, Ryan Adams, Kendrick Lamar, Father John Misty and Nora Jones these days.
SA: Thus far in your career, what has been your biggest success? RT: I’m not sure what I would consider my biggest success. I’ve played some really awesome stages with some incredible bands. I’ve done two collaborations with 5 Paddles Brewing Co. out of Whitby ON. where the beer label was a playable vinyl 45 with my music on them. That was pretty awesome. I’m also always incredibly grateful to still be touring and playing all over the place.
SA: On the other hand, what is the biggest challenge you have faced, and how have you dealt with it? RT: Honestly, sometimes the biggest challenge is just to keep at it. I mean, I get to play MY music for a living and get to travel more than most people and see things and places multiple times that most people don’t get to see in their lifetime, but there is definitely a trade off. The highs are matched by the lows with the doubt and the constant hustle to get shows, opportunities, etc. I’m very fortunate though to have an incredibly supportive and amazing wife who has my back and encourages me forward when I some times want to stop. I wouldn’t trade what I do in for anything else and I love it so much; it’s just not always a party.
SA: How do you approach the song-writing process? RT: I don’t really have a set way of writing to be honest. Sometimes the melody comes first, sometimes it’s the lyrics, but a lot of times I will come up with a riff on guitar first. Once I’ve got a piece of something that I find interesting I usually grab a glass of whiskey, beer or tea and sit and play with it until I get somewhere or it drives me so insane that I have to leave it alone for a bit. After I’ve got something I’m a little happy with, I "road test" it at shows and try to flesh it out/trim it or decide if it should just get stripped for parts for other songs.
SA: What are your thoughts on the Ottawa music scene? RT: The Ottawa music scene is definitely a unique and interesting one. There are a lot of talented people in this city and a lot of really interesting and sometimes unorthodox venues to play their original music in. Something that has set this city apart for me too is the amount of support that the city seems to give to the arts and music community here. There are a great number of festivals big and small here and there always seems to be some sort of initiative encouraging some chapter of the Ottawa art community where a lot of other cities that I’ve lived in either don’t know where to put support properly or have no idea how to support their own scene and go elsewhere for art instalments and music for functions and festivals.
SA: In your opinion: What is the best song you have written? RT: That’s an awkward one for me. I don’t know if I could say what my best song is, but I have favourite songs for different reasons. The Last Iris off of my first EP I love because it was therapeutic for me to write and reminds of my why I wrote it every time I sing it. With Grace was written for my wife and I’m not good at love songs so that’s always going to be her’s. End Game was the first time I think I dabbled in finding my own sound both sonically and lyrically. Smile makes me happy because when I released it a friend of mine told me that I was the only one who could write a song that sad and then have the audacity to call it Smile, haha.
SA: If you had to choose, what is your favourite show you've ever played (venue, city, other bands)? RT: That’s a tough one to answer because I’ve had some awesome shows with some incredible bands in amazing venues over the years. My favourite might have to be from a couple years ago when I helped put together a Tom Waits tribute night with a bunch of my favourite musician friends from groups like Hairy Holler, Benjamin Reines, Fish Head Phil, The Volume Academy, etc. at my favourite venue, The Moustache Club in Oshawa. It was incredible because I not only got to hear some of the best musicians I know play our collectively favourite songs by Mr. Waits, but I also got to jam with them on one of the best stages around. Sadly, The Moustache Club is no longer around, but I had some of the best nights of my life on that stage and in that bar.
SA: A question for fun: If you had to pick your favourite local band in Ottawa, who would you choose and why? RT: I really enjoy The Heavy Medicine Band. Keturah is an incredible singer, songwriter and performer. The band is just really solid and their shows are always a great time.
SA: What do you have in store in 2018? Best wishes for a great rest of the year, Rory! RT: Thanks so much! For the rest of the year I’ve got a couple more festivals to play like Supercrawl in Hamilton and Beau’s Oktoberfest. I’ve got a few tours to do as well and I’m starting to write my next album. It was a pleasure talking with you, hopefully we can share a pint or something some time.
