Headcanons for Akashi laughing 🤭

Back with another headcanon post. Hooray for chronic Akashi brainrot! Lemme make this quick so I can go to bed.

As we all know, for most of the manga/anime, Akashi is someone who is portrayed as a serious, analytical, and (depending on which personality is in control) cold person. But he wasn't/isn't always like that as we've come to realize. Let me explore his character chronologically through the canon material before I get into my headcanons so we can establish some things about his personality.

When he was a child, he was seen to be much more of a smiley person because while his mother was still alive she allowed him to just be a kid. So I'm sure he had plenty to smile about before her passing.

After that, Akashi enrolls in Teiko, and at age 13 he still smiles, but they're smaller and he seems more mild-mannered and reserved compared to when he was younger. However, that doesn't mean his smiles aren't genuine. He still had happy moments in Teiko up until his second year, and he enjoyed hanging out with the rest of the GoM + Kuroko and Momoi. But we still never really saw him laugh. I'm sure he did during those times, but it was never anything that was shown explicitly.

After he switched personalities, he was barely smiling at all. Bro was miserable. He would smile every once in a while but in more of an unhinged way if that makes sense. Maybe he chuckled once when he met Mayuzumi. If you can even call it a chuckle. It was more like he puffed out a breath of air. And again, it was in more of an unhinged way. I remember in one of the Replace novels, Mibuchi made an observation that before Akashi switched back to his true self, he could never tell if his smile was genuine or if he was simply using it as a tool to get others to let their guard down. This is what I mean by "unhinged".

But post-Winter Cup? Akashi is nothing but smiley and I love that for him. Obviously, it's still slightly toned down, but it's a much better improvement from both his first year at Rakuzan AND his entire Teiko run. He seems to have just finally given up on facades and allowed himself to be more open with how he feels, which has canonically led to his teammates seeing sides of Akashi they'd never seen before.

In the post-Winter Cup content, I've seen him chuckle a lot more, and his voice when he chuckles is the most precious thing ever and I wish I could hear more of it. But that takes care of the canon, so let's get into my headcanons, shall we?

First of all, what makes Akashi laugh? Well, from the canon, we've seen that most of the time, it's when he's watching his teammates' antics and chuckles in amusement. But if you really want to make him laugh, I feel like, similar to my headcanons on how to startle Akashi, you'd have to catch him off guard. Like, you'd have to say or do something so ridiculous and left-field that it catches Akashi off guard and makes him laugh out of the sheer unexpectedness of it all.

So, how would Akashi look when he laughs? It would depend on how hard he's laughing. If it's one of those cute lil chuckles he does, he has this small smile on his face and his eyes sparkle with fondness. But if you're lucky enough to get an unrestrained laugh out of Akashi, chances are either his head is tilted back or his shoulders are hunched as he's bent over trying to catch his breath. He's probably not even looking at you either because when he laughs like that his eyes can't help but close. And his face crinkles in the most precious way.

How does he sound when he laughs? For small chuckles, we already have examples of this in canon; refer to the KNB drama CD season 3 volume 9 if you need a reference. But if he were to laugh really hard? Well, first of all, he pegs me as the type of person who would at first try and hold himself together before failing miserably.

I'm not sure if this counts as canon or not, but I remember a KNB video game where there was a scene where the GoM was reminiscing on some couple's costume event they were dragged into participating in back in Teiko, and Akashi had mentioned that when he saw Aomine in a dress and Midorima in a woman's kimono, he literally had to stop looking at them to keep from bursting into laughter.

Going off of that, if Akashi was caught off guard and found something really funny, he'd probably be like "PFFFT" before catching himself and trying to hide his growing smile behind his hand. But then it gets too hard to hold in his laugh so he gives up and just laughs wholeheartedly. The more funny something is, the harder it is to hold back, so if he's laughing really hard, you will absolutely hear it. He's not a super loud laugher like Kise or even Takao, but if he's laughing hard he's definitely not quiet about it. His voice sounds very melodic while he's laughing, too. He probably got that from his mom. 🥹

How do people react to him laughing? GoM + Momoi are more accustomed to seeing him happy/smiley, so when he laughs, they're more endeared by it, if anything, because it reminds them that Akashi is back to his old self. But his Rakuzan team (more specifically, the Uncrowned Kings) is still getting used to Akashi's true self and is figuring things out about him every day. So I would think that post-Winter Cup is when they hear Akashi properly laugh for the first time and all of them come to a nonverbal agreement that they must protect Akashi's smile at all costs. They also take note of things that Akashi finds amusing just for the sole purpose of using them to make him laugh again and see that adorable laughing face of his.

As time goes on and Akashi becomes more open, it's less and less difficult to get him to laugh, and he expresses himself much more freely compared to before. Happiness is a good look on him and his friends hope that he continues to stay this happy for a long time.

The best thing about Kuroko no Basket's retroactive storytelling is that it's like a puzzle board. The story starts a few months after Teiko parted ways, and literally everything in the story is defined by those three years, but we don't get all the pieces right off the bat. It starts simple, with Kuroko saying the championship game made him question Teiko's policies, and then it slowly builds and builds. They keep dropping tiny details at us. You learn as early on in the practice match against Kaijou that Kise only joined the GOM in their second year. You almost miss it (or at least I did until my fourth rewatch) but in the match against Seiho, one of the players callously mentions wanting to score at least 30 points to match Seirin's 13 and you see Kuroko go cold and angry for seemingly no reason; of course, anyone would get annoyed by that but that particular comment is obviously foreshadowing the big Ogiwara reveal + the truth about what actually happened in the championship that we get in season 3 (the cruel 111-11 play).

Similarly, when Kagami first asks about Aomine ["he said he used to be your light"] Kuroko only gives him the broad strokes. He doesn't mention how they met or how Aomine stood up for him when he was struggling or any of that – he gave just the need-to-know basics, which is that Aomine lost his passion for basketball after his growth spurt came too soon and he became too good at it. And that they used to be partners. It's only later that we learn about the coach's lack of intervention, Akashi's lack of intervention, Nijimura quitting the team and other such factors that make Aomine's (and everyone's) situation far more complex than the simple summary Kuroko initially gave in early Season 1. It's only later that we learn the depth of Kuroko and Aomine's bond and that Aomine was the one who inspired Kuroko not to give up. It's such an excellent choice to strategically withhold each "piece" of the story and wait for the perfect moment to put it down, so to speak.

Ironically enough, KNB's storytelling style is both it's greatest strength and greatest weakness. For the most part, the retroactive narrative works well, but sometimes there are silly slip-ups like Takao asking Midorima if his former teammates are "strong" (we learn later that Takao has actually played Teiko before in middle school, so why would he ask Midorima that?) and Kise asks Kuroko why he quit after the championship game (Kise should know since. Well. He was there.) At times like that, it becomes retrocontinuity and not retroactivity because it's clear the author had some of the story planned, but other parts he was making up as he went along.

And that's not at all a bad thing! Manga, after all, is a medium where sales drive the story and a lot of it is just making up things as you go along because it's impossible to have a storyboard right off the bat if you don't know how your story will be received when it comes out. The initial plot lines change (we know this to be true, since Kuroko and Akashi were initially meant to be brothers and that Fujimaki had a clear idea of how exaggerated the basketball should be only after he wrote Midorima). What this means on a critical perspective is that KNB is an amazingly ambitious story; it plans a future without fully fleshing out the past, and sometimes it fumbles but sometimes it accidentally shits out a golden brick. KNB, to me, is amazing because it captures that innate humanness in art, that one step away from perfection that gives us a glimpse into how stories are made, what decisions make the final cut, what choices were so important that they survived every draft, revision and retcon. All because of its narrative!

give me a knb episode and I’ll give an analysis on it .. anyways, let’s talk about the brilliant way mayuzumi was handled in the anime. and how protective aomine is of kuroko.

mayuzumi wasn’t revealed until the end of season 3, no one knew a thing. neither did the audience. I enjoy the way it was handled by making mayuzumi appear in the background. Never getting a good look on his face. before we weren’t supposed to. he was a shadow.

he wasn’t supposed to be there.

I also liked the way he wasn’t a copy of Kuroko. long and instead of short. impulsive instead of calm.

the way aomine immediately clocked onto mayuzumi. the way he recognized what he was. how he rested for Kuroko. showing the bond he has for Kuroko.

which leads me To my next thought.

after their first match, with the loose of seirin, we see aomine and his team in the locker rooms. they spoke poorly About Kuroko, calling him useless, or a joke. or pathetic. ( paraphrasing, can’t remember rn. ) aomine doesn’t let that slide. no.

because even with all the shit he says, he has care for Kuroko. basically meaning that he’s the only one who can talk shit about him. he’s his former teammate after all.

then moving to the bathroom scene of the team against hanamiya’s.

the wrath of Kuroko, while calm typically. he’s able to keep his emotions in. yet his wrath was incurred.

staring the words: “it’s not about whether or not I think you can win, but you managed to piss of tetsu. that’s why.”

paraphrasing but god I love the bathroom scene.

Kuroko’s the one who told the scales with his quickly thinking. he knows things. He isn’t a weak player. even if people may believe that.

then to after kises game against haizaki.

where he brings kuroko’s up and says to stay away from kise AND kuroko. always thinking abt his ex bf i swear.

then how he cries when he realizes that it was always Kuroko who held the key to the true zone .. but he had given him up and left him to soon to realize.

KnB 30-Days Challenge

Day 14 : Favorite Member of Kaijō

Kasamatsu Yukio 💙

Well, it took me quite a few rewatches and quite a lot of thinking to realise that Kasamatsu Yukio is probably the best captain in the entire series, and my favorite Kaijō member. Everything about this guy is amazing.

I will never forget rewatching Season 3, for the millonth time, and finishing the Kaijō-Seirin match and needing... a moment. It suddenly struck me, out of blue, the urge to think more deeply about Yukio. In the matches he has played in Season 3 he showed some amazing qualities that I never seemed to notice before. He showed some incredible skill as a player, he showed how determined, motivated, strong, serious and sensible he is, he also never failed to support his teammates and motivate them to fight. I suddenly needed to rewatch some other matches, and when I did, I just fell in love with this man more. What surprised me the most was how awesome he was on the court, and how I never noticed that? He never allowed himself to loose his cool, for the sake of keeping the good mood and the victorious and undefeatble feel in the team. He is also very serious, focused and, oh, incredibly skilled. When I watched KuroBasu with a friend who is into basketball, after we finished the show, I asked him who his favorite player was. He said Yukio, without hesitation. Why? Because he has polished the most fundamental skills and became a weapon on both the inside and on the outside. He is good at dribbling and getting through opponents, finishing under the rim and scoring with a layup. However, if he is ever stopped or the circumstances don't allow him to score from the inside, he just shoots from the outside, sinking the ball in with ease. After The Generation of Miracles and The Uncrowned Kings, he is one of the best players. What I love about him is how he is extremely courageous. He never hesitated to face opponents who he knew were stronger than him. He literally didn't even think twice before trying to stop players like Daiki and Shōgō. His will and fighting spirit are to not be underestimated!

His past is something that I also somehow ignored at first, and noticed just later. It is pretty tragic, and honestly, ever after thinking about it, I cannot watch the scenes where he cries without needing a moment to let a tear out. He has gone through so much grief, and now he is a captain, and the pillar, of the Kaijō team, respected and known.

Now, I wouldn't be me if I didn't talk about personality at least a little. He is pretty strict and he respects hierarchy, he knows his worth and he demands respect. Usually, those are the only things people know. He is most usually that way, there is no denying in that, but he has another side that people seem to talk about a lot less. It usually gets exposed when he is with, well, girls. He becomes so awkward, shy, blushes heavily and stutters when he tries to speak. He is so frozen up that girls from his class only talk to him by asking him Yes-or-No questions! That is just so unexpected, but also so sweet and maybe even a little cute to imagine! Seriously though, he is really handsome, he is a sportsman, he is a good student, pretty smart, he plays the coolest instrument even, the guitar, he is just so cool, and I know many girls like him. Perhaps, Ryōta should teach him how to be less awkward when he is introduced to a cute girl!

Well, I also want to talk about another aspect of him: his mental strength. After missing a pass that cost Kaijō an important victory, he felt such blame and guilt that he decided he was quitting basketball, something that he was exceptional at, something that he put so much time, effort and love in. However, his coach not only didn't allow him to do that, but he made him the captain of the team. It must have been so hard for him. He surely needed a lot of courage to accept the jersey with the number 4 on it, a lot of strenght to bear the responsibility of leading a team that he previously disappointed, betrayed. Still, after everything, he became who he is now. I also have to mention the Jabberwock-Strky game. The fact that he stayed so calm and composed after he literally got humiliated and made fun of on the court and had enough respect amd decency to offer a handshake and thank his opponents for the game, and in return had to listen to Nash's 'Kill yourselves' talk and get spit on his hand... He didn't deserve that, at all. However, in that scene, he proved how mature he was and showed incredible self-control. His mental strenght is on another level.

9 Favorite TV Shows (that I don’t always talk about)

I got tagged by @blairwaldcrf - and am gonna take a page from their book, because this list is just always the same. So. Cutting out all the shows I always talk about anyway.

(The 9 that are on the obvious main list: Buffy, Relic Hunter, Leverage, Once Upon a Time, Shadowhunters, Sailor Moon, One Piece, Teen Wolf, Charmed)

These are in no particular order because it’d break my brain to actually rank them!

1. Community

One of my favorite comedies! It is so silly, but it is also very consistent - it does drop a little in the later seasons, but I love the originality of the show in the overall.

2. The Nanny

My all-time favorite comedy show. I used to rewatch all the re-runs. One of the down-sides of streaming is that you no longer just... end up watching reruns (also so much content, no real time for casual rewatches, I should make the time for another rewatch). Will they/won’t they rom-coms all around the world want what Max and Fran had. Jealous bitches want to be CC but never will be. No butler has ever sassed like Niles.

3. Hustle

I love this show a lot! It is severely underrated! It’s if Leverage was a band of British bastards who steal for themselves and break the fourth wall. I love them a lot. I think everyone who loves Leverage should go and watch Hustle too, honestly. It’s about the found family and the con.

4. Grey’s Anatomy

Listen, this show isn’t perfect, it has flaws, but anything that has run for 19 years has to have flaws. But I love it so much - and the friendship between Cristina and Meredith is quite frankly absolutely amazing. The way they prioritize each other, and the way their partners accept that? And so many more things I love about this show.

5. Stargate SG-1

Genuinely my favorite scifi show. It is so well-written with such compelling characters and arcs and just genuinely so funny, it has no right to still hold up so well and be that funny - and I’m saying that as someone who didn’t grow up on it and only discovered it a couple years ago.

6. Recess

My comfort cartoon from my childhood. I loved this as a kid so very, very much and it still brings me a lot of joy and warm childhood memories to rewatch.

7. Kekkai Sensen

I can’t explain this one. I hate blood/violence in anime, I usually skip these parts. I don’t know. But I have so much love for this anime. I regularly find myself rewatching it because I love it so much (though also, admittedly, due to its short length. Can’t casually pop in a full rewatch of One Piece).

8. Kuroko no Basuke

Favorite of the sports anime! An absolute classic. The color-coded basketball monster boys! It also masters length quite well, to be honest? Many either stretch out the length of games far too long (side-eyeing later seasons of Haikyuu), or more recent anime that just... cut everything so very short and speedrun through it all a little too much? I think KnB has the right balance to stretch it out but keep you in suspense.

9. Shadow & Bone

And you know what! Another ongoing show, beside Grey’s. I really do love SaB a lot, what can I say. I’m weak for flawed fantasy shows with great characters.
