Endeavor Content, CJ ENM, and How Killing Eve Sold Out To Homophobia
We need to talk about Endeavor Content, its 2021 acquisition by South Korean entertainment giant CJ ENM, and how Killing Eve sold out to homophobia.
It’s a sordid tale of an entertainment agency violating a key 1962 American anti-trust law, an international media conglomerate hailing from a country steeped in ongoing intolerance toward LGBTQ people purchasing majority rights in media content, and capitalism and Christianity poisoning our favourite show as a result.
So much of our heartbreak and outrage after Killing Eve’s finale has rightfully centred around Laura Neal because of her blatantly homophobic, out of touch, and puritanical interviews in its aftermath. Not to mention her repugnant push to have a Christian conversion plot driving most of Season 4, complete with Villanelle’s barbaric death being an allegory for her lover Eve’s “rebirth.” But it’s time to actually focus on the context within which Laura Neal’s homophobia was allowed to be given a platform in the first place. And that means examining what was going on behind the murky scenes of Killing Eve’s production.
In the contemporary entertainment industry, it’s simply unacceptable for a show such as Killing Eve, a female led show, to perpetuate the harmful Bury Your Gays trope that has real world harmful impacts for our LGBTQ community worldwide. It only makes sense to be wondering: how was such homophobic content allowed to be broadcast?
Answering this meant following the trail of money through the public record that’s spanned years and led to some disturbing findings.
Let’s start with Endeavor Content, the studio that initially greenlit and financed Killing Eve. The series was commissioned by BBC America, which is why BBC did not automatically inherit the show and had to strike a deal with Endeavor first. The rights were sold in March 2018:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the same time that BBC took on Sid Gentle Films to produce the actual content. So please keep this vital point in mind: as soon as the rights to Killing Eve were purchased from Endeavor Content, Sid Gentle Films became, in effect, their subsidiary.
Endeavor Content was founded in 2017 and is actually a company owned by WME, a talent agency based in Beverly Hills, California. Basically, Endeavor Content invests in and owns the content itself whereas WME is supposed to be representing their own clients (such as writers and actors). And this is precisely the problem. In 2019, Endeavor Content came under fire by the Writers Guild Of America for conflict of interest.
Given that the company had a stake in Killing Eve up to and including Season 3, it’s important to understand why this matters:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A quick glance at Silver Lake Partners’ portfolio confirms that Endeavor is listed, as well as a vast array of other companies including Twitter, TEG, Stripe, Unity, and Dell Technologies. The primary focus seems to be on Content & Entertainment ventures.
So where does the conflict of interest for Endeavor Content come into play? Simply put, Endeavor was both the employer and the representative of the clients in salary negotiations:
Tumblr media
But that’s not the only aspect of conflict of interest that’s concerning. The other portion is that Endeavor Content directly invests in production companies–a “high risk” manoeuvre which it would have necessarily done with Sid Gentle Films as part of its usual business model:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Indeed, the pressure began to mount on Endeavor Content throughout 2019 and 2020.
In the meantime, AMC and Sid Gentle Films named IMG as Killing Eve’s licensing agent in 2020. Specifically, they pushed fashion and beauty products–like the exploitative lingerie and Hunter boots partnerships that eventually materialized in 2022 for Season 4.
Tumblr media
At this point, you’re likely asking yourself: who is IMG?
Why,
IMG is the private company that Endeavor Content owns and has been in partnership with since 2018:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let’s put these pieces together so far: at a time when Endeavor Content is embroiled in an ugly legal battle with the Writers Guild of America over its conflict of interest, it still does business with Killing Eve under the guise of IMG.
The key point here is that WGA forced large companies—such as media companies, private equity firms, and hedge funds—to reach a settlement. Because these companies were making money through licensing agents (such as IMG), WAG forced them to sell their majority stakes in studios to clear up their conflict of interest.
Endeavor Content was one of those companies. The first round of bidding in October 2021 was solicited at $750 million USD.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, in the second round of bidding in November 2021, South Korean entertainment giant CJ ENM bought Endeavor Content for $775 million USD.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The deal was significant because it solidified CJ ENM’s expansion into the media market outside of South Korea and it gained massive profits from commercializing all the IPs (including Killing Eve) that it suddenly owned more than 80% of rights in.
In total, the deal was valued at a whopping $785 million USD when all was said and done. Additionally, CJ ENM clearly stated that Endeavor Content would serve as a “base camp” for it while it aggressively expands its content library with both original and acquired content through to 2023:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apparently, Killing Eve sold out to homophobia for hundreds of millions of dollars.
At this point, I’ve covered:
How the rights to Killing Eve were acquired from Endeavor Content by BBC, who put Sid Gentle Films in charge of the production and made them, in effect, a subsidiary of Endeavor Content.
How Endeavor Content had a conflict of interest problem because it engaged in self dealing.
How the WGA forced companies like Endeavor Content to divest their majority stakes in studios to resolve this conflict of interest.
How and why Endeavor Content was purchased by CJ ENM.
The key takeaway here is that: with CJ ENM acquiring Endeavor Content and a majority stake in its IPs, including Killing Eve, this means that Sid Gentle Films continued production under the banner of this new management.
Now let’s talk about CJ ENM and South Korea’s persistent homophobia problem, especially in media.
CJ ENM is a publicly traded conglomerate on the Korean Exchange, as part of the larger CJ Group founded in 1994. It’s based in Seoul, South Korea.
Getting into the entire history of LGBTQ movement in South Korea and the full extent Christianity continues to influence it is beyond the scope of this post. However, there are several key points to note here that are relevant to the South Korea’s attitudes towards the LGBTQ community and same-sex representation in media.
In 2019, The Diplomat published a survey of South Korean attitudes toward LGBTQ people. The survey found that there is a persistent pattern of South Korean intolerance of homosexuality, including when controlling for age, gender, education, income, and religion. The intolerance worsened if the “proximity” of the LGBTQ individual was that of a close family member. South Korea’s intolerance was also glaring when compared to more tolerant neighbouring countries like Taiwan and Hong Kong. Crucially, the survey notes that the size and influence of Christian churches shaping the national discussion on LGBT rights and tolerance is a huge factor.
The scope and influence of Christianity on South Korean media cannot possibly be overstated.
For one thing, even cosmopolitan cities such as Seoul regularly censor and erase LGBTQ content in 2022:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Clearly LGBTQ representation in South Korea is in peril and otherwise smothered. Particularly in Seoul, where CJ ENM is based.
The Financial Times also pinpoints that South Korea’s LGBTQ community faces pervasive discrimination and that the Seoul based government isn’t doing much about it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s jarring to notice how little actual separation between the church and state there is, given that evangelical Christian groups still hold so much terrifying sway over governmental policies, society and culture, and by extension, the media.
Consider a Christian documentary film released in 2016 that is a case in point which has disturbing similarities to Laura Neal’s homophobic narrative for Season 4 of Killing Eve:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The sickening emphasis on being an “ex-gay,” on same sex relationships being an “addiction,” on “wanting” to somehow “stop,” and of the church being framed as offering the only possible redemption, are all homophobic points bolstered by Christianity.
They are also the direct basis of Villanelle’s character arc in Season 4, including the nature of her death and by extension its impact on Eve–in so many words, Laura Neal lets us know that Villanelle’s death “frees” Eve and is a “rebirth” so that she can essentially become an ex-gay that has moved on from her toxic relationship with Villanelle to lead a happy, normal life.
Sure, Killing Eve can claim that Villanelle never wanted to be an “ex-gay” but rather an ex-killer. And yet, this is highly disingenuous and insults the intelligence of the primarily LGBTQ audience. After all, Villanelle never truly abandoned killing. Nor was it necessary to entrench her redemption in a literal church, going so far as to turn her into a camp version of Jesus, and overall to taint Killing Eve’s complexities with black-and-white Christian morality. This is nothing more than thinly veiled homophobia.
The bottom line here is CJ ENM paid nearly one billion dollars to acquire Killing Eve, among other media, and is a majority stakeholder. Therefore, it stands to reason that the conglomerate sets the rules for marketing, distribution, and most of all–production.
Furthermore, based on everything that’s presented here, it makes sense to come to the troubling conclusion that: the pervasive intolerance towards LGBTQ people in South Korea, including in Seoul, impacts the very company that’s based there and provides the context for homophobia to be prevalent throughout Season 4 of Killing Eve.
Remember, CJ ENM effectively owns Side Gentle Films, and being a stakeholder with over 80% vested interested entitles the conglomerate to call the shots. I think there’s literally just no other way a contemporary production company such as Side Gentle Films would ever actively develop an entire season of homophobic content for its female led show that culminates in the horrific Bury Your Gays trope.
So in my opinion, it is not a coincidence that Laura Neal’s homophobic, Christian-fueled views were given the green light thanks to executive producers, and that her appalling creative vision aligns with the pervasive intolerance towards LGBTQ people where CJ ENM is based.
To be perfectly clear, this is not a condemnation of the entire conglomerate or the South Korean people, but of their government that continues to double down on LGBTQ discrimination and homophobia. Unfortunately, this is especially true for its censorship and control of media–particularly for a conglomerate that owns the rights to media beyond South Korea’s borders.
Killing Eve was once a boundary breaking show. It was a refuge for so many of us thanks to its unapologetically lesbian characterization of Villanelle and her darkly evolving relationship with Eve, a bisexual character. But over time that began to deteriorate. The show killed off too many of its LGBTQ characters, from Bill to Hélène, often in meaningless and horrible ways. This distressing pattern eventually culminated in the reviled Bury Your Gays television trope with the death of Villanelle. Killing Eve’s finale solidified the show’s homophobia in the worst way possible.
By examining what went on behind the scenes of Killing Eve’s production, with the involvement of Endeavor Content and CJ ENM, I hoped to show how Laura Neal’s homophobia was given a platform in Season 4.
I know that all this may be shocking and difficult to stomach. I know I just got angrier and angrier the more I researched and wrote. But the important thing to keep in mind is that we have the power to keep holding the purveyors of homophobia accountable.
We have the power to make our thunderous voices heard, unmistakably and loudly. We can make a difference. Having a clearer perspective on what we’re dealing with empowers us to make that difference where it counts. And the most long lasting, impactful differences happen over time.
Starting with the places no corporation, government, or church can ever remove from us—our hearts and our minds.
