Wimmera Steampunk Festival Wrap Up/Event Video

April was steampunk month. It was the 36th anniversary of the coining of the word ‘steampunk’ to describe the literary genre by KW Jeter. It is the birthday month of the main character in my first steampunk series, The Adventures of Viola Stewart. It was the month I revealed my new steampunk short story collection, and the month we travelled interstate (5 hours drive) from Adelaide to Dimboola for the Wimmera Steampunk Festival.

The drive took six hours; there was the inevitable roadworks, April burnoffs, and ‘tea’ breaks – one of which resulted a fortuitous find at the ’24 Seven Cafe’ at Tailem Bend: the most deliciously sinful chocolate fudge brownie, with emphasis on the chocolate fudge. (We stopped there on the return trip for more!)

This year accommodation in Dimboola booked out quickly, with many having to stay in the surrounding townships. We stayed in Horsham – about a 30 minute drive from Dimboola – equivalent to our usual jaunt to the city here in Adelaide.

The town of Dimboola really got into the mood, with local businesses on Lloyd and Lochiel Streets joining the atmosphere. The Victoria hotel is worth the visit if you love 19thC Victorian architecture and design – with dark wood interiors highlighted with strong colours and gorgeous curiosities, and the perfect spot to sit and watch the world go by.

The Wimmera Steampunk Festival is a combination of street party (theme: Time Traveller’s Soiree), creator markets, costume parade, and music – ranging through rock, folk, and even a brass band (which, like the Pied Piper – had revellers trailing it as they processed along the street), and a light show over the Dimboola Imaginarium (residing in the historic bank building).

Though the ‘Time Travellers’ Soiree’ was held on the Saturday, there were other steampunk-related events over the weekend, including a Poe play, Steampunk dinner, more bands, and two author talks, one by Perth author Carol Ryles on the Friday, the second by yours truly at the Dimboola Imaginarium on Sunday.

Sunday 23rd April is also the birthday of the main character in my first steampunk series, The Adventures of Viola Stewart. To celebrate, I gave all talk attendees an eBook copy of my upcoming steampunk short story collection Cogs and Conspiracies scheduled for release on 17th May.

The event itself was full of the whimsy, individuality, makers ethic, and joy which is an integral part of steampunk. Most attendees garbed up in their steampunk finery, with some astounding creations of their imagination.

I finally got to meet The Brass Harpies in person – a trio of amazing women who promote steampunk – who I’ve been chatting to online for years (it was lockdown, remember). (Looking forward to them making the trip over for our own Adelaide Steampunk Aetherfest).

The event was organised by Chan Uoy, owner of the Dimboola Imaginarium, and sponsored by many local businesses. Thank you Chan and Dimboola for a fantastic event, to Chan for hosting my talk on Sunday, and to everyone who attended. Apologies to those who couldn’t attend as the room was full.

I want to particularly thank the staff of Horsham Priceline for their invaluable help. I’d left my painkillers behind in Adelaide (they were on the bench, ready to pack, when we got home) and I had a major fibroflare on Saturday night after a extremely long day. Fortunately, I had a script on file at the pharmacy in South Australia, so with a little email technology, they saved the day and I could function on Sunday for my talk. (Phew!)

okay i hate neil gaiman by default but the books of magic 1990 miniseries was absolute perfection in the same way kw jeter’s follow up 1991 mister e miniseries was absolute perfection (and same goes for john ney reiber’s 1999 the trenchcoat brigade miniseries of course) and i can’t recommend the whole brigade trilogy, in the aforementioned order, enough for anyone interested in the phantom stranger & dc’s magic side without necessarily wanting to follow tim hunter’s journey and looking to merely stay well within the boundaries of what’s directly relevant to the dcu. or if you’re an insane person like me and wanna see more of mister e

I didn't enjoy it;;;

All of the characters seemed a bit off and it was pretty dense and hard to follow at times. It sort of dragged on.

I don't really have anything good to say. I was hoping I'd like this book and I was disappointed. At one point Odo and Quark had a conversation. It wasn't great but it was kind of better.

Overall I wouldn't really recommend this book to anyone. The only reason I kept reading was to be done with it.

in K.W. Jeter's "The Mandalorian Armor", Boba Fett is described as having had his olfactory senses removed. He relies on the helmet to expunge toxic molecules and doesn't leave himself vulnerable to noxious poisoning. In short, Boba Fett... has no sense of smell.

#8yrsago Tim Powers's Last Call: a mind-altering journey into superstition, Vegas style

I just got through re-reading Tim Power's World Fantasy Award-winning 1996 novel Last Call, which is truly one of the triumphs of modern fantasy literature. Powers, one of Philip K Dick's three proteges (the others are James Blaylock and KW Jeter), is a tremendous writer, and his whole catalog deserves your attention, but even against the field of standout Powers novels, Last Call stands out further.

Last Call's premise, at its core, is that Bugsy Siegel built Las Vegas in order to become a living avatar of the Fisher King, but that he was prevented by doing this when a French mystic named Georges Leon assassinated him, stole his head from the morgue, tossed it into Lake Mead, and set about turning his sons into mindless soldiers in his mystic army by conducting dark rituals involving a handpainted Tarot deck that could drive you mad.

One of Leon's sons survives, though he loses his eye to his father's violence, and his dying mother smuggles him away from his father and tosses him, blindly, over the transom of a passing yacht on a trailer. He is found by a professional gambler, Ozzie Crane, who raises Scott as his foster son, and later adopts another girl, Diana, and raises her as his foster sister. From Ozzie, Scott learns of the gambler's mysticisms and superstitions: fold out your hand when the smoke gathers in the middle of the table or the drinks in the glass start to sit off-level, lest you buy or sell more than what's in the pot. Twenty years later, Scott -- now a professional gambler -- ignores Ozzie's pleas to stay clear of a game played on a houseboat on Lake Mead ("You want to play on tame water? Are you crazy?") and finds himself playing a queer sort of poker with 13 players and a deck of Tarot cards, playing (he later learns) against his own biological father, who has taken over the body of the game's host, and who is using the game to steal the bodies of more people so that he can attain true immortality.

This is a book that swirls with mysticism and resonances: everyday superstition, Sumerian and Egyptian religious doctrine, the Tarot and Carl Jung's archetypes, and the Arthurian mythos. Powers is clearly in some way the spiritual son of Philip K Dick (he certainly tells some pretty awesomely hilarious and terrifying stories about being Dick's confidante, driver, helper, and rescuer) and he's got Dick's knack for imagining catastrophically superstitious worlds where you're never sure who is the madman and who is the sage. He's also got Dick's flair for the bizarre, the sense that he's tapped into something very deep in the lived human experience of weird. But Powers is an infinitely better writer than Dick ever was: better at plot, characters and dialog.

Last Call is the first of three loosely joined books, the next two being Expiration Date and Earthquake Weather, and all three are brilliant in their own way, but Last Call remains my favorite. I caught up with it again via the audiobook, which is available as a DRM-free audio CD read by Bronson Pinchot (who is a surprisingly good and subtle audiobook voice-actor).

Comment améliorer son référencement sur Google ? [SEO]

Au fur est à mesure des années, le SEO a pris de plus en plus d’ampleur sur le web. Et ce, au point que chaque année la concurrence devient de plus en plus rude, et de nombreux professionnels finissent par s’exclamer « Attention : le SEO va mourrir ! ». Et bien, cela fait maintenant plus de 3 ans (pour ma part)… Le SEO est toujours d’actualité et marche bien, TRÈS bien pour aider des freelance, PME ou startup.

Mais alors, comment s’y prendre et comment faire face à la concurrence ? Les bases du SEO pour améliorer son référencement naturel sur Google

Quand on parle de référencement naturel, il faut savoir que c’est un métier en soit, et que celui-ci se divise en trois grandes parties. C’est-à-dire :

Le contenu Le netlinking La technique

Chacun de ces aspects ont tous leur importance et sont complémentaires. En effet, sans contenu, nous n’apparaîtrons pas sur les moteurs de recherche. Sans netlinking, nous ne seront pas correctement positionné sur Google. Et, sans technique, nous risquons de perdre le trafic durement acquis par manque de sensibilisation et d’attention au vu d’une erreur commise ou d’une attaque, nous perdons notamment un potentiel de visibilité supplémentaire ainsi qu’une meilleure expérience utilisateur.

Parmi ces 3 sections, des critères sont plus pris en compte par Google que d’autres. Voici donc quelques uns des principaux points à travailler pour booster son référencement sur Google.

1. Optimisez la structure de son site web pour améliorer son référencement

Si vous partez de 0 et êtes sur le point de créer votre site web. C’est parfait. En effet, lorsque le SEO commence dès la création du site web, c’est encore plus efficace (Si ce n’est pas le cas, ne vous inquiétez pas il est possible d’y travailler dessus en prenant quelques précautions). Voici donc quelques questions à se poser :

Quelles pages vont devoir être créées ? Quelles requêtes viser pour apparaître sur Google ? Comment organiser toutes ces pages et comment les mailler entres elles ?

En fait, il faut imaginer votre site comme une sorte de fontaine où l’eau équivaut à la popularité d’une page et à son potentiel de positionnement sur Google. Le sommet de la fontaine (votre page d’accueil) projète l’eau et est la plus puissante. Puis le supplément d’eau finit par s’écouler au second niveau (vos pages catégories). Puis l’excédent d’eau, finit par s’écouler au troisième niveau (ex: articles ou pages produits). Et ainsi de suite.

Plus les pages sont proches du sommet, plus elles sont puissantes. Les pages se trouvant dans le menu de navigation de votre site à 1 clic de la page d’accueil par exemple, se positionneront plus facilement sur Google.

Par contre, plus nous descendons dans l’arborescence du site, 3 clics, 5 clics, 8 clics ou plus pour atteindre une page, et moins elles auront de puissance pour se positionner sur de grosses requêtes. D’où le fait que l’on finit sur de la longue traîne.

Il est donc important de sélectionner avec soin les liens à intégrer dans le menu, le footer, la page d’accueil ou encore les pages catégories, de sorte a réaliser une structure en silo. En effet, c’est cette structure en silo qui permettra de transférer correctement la popularité entre les pages. Pour avoir une vision globale du site, je vous conseille de réaliser un mind map.

Quelques points auxquels faire attention :

Les mots-clés à viser : opportunités ? concurrentiels ? La valeur de la requête : nombre de recherches mensuelles ? L’arborescence : en silo ? mise en avant des pages importantes / à potentiel ?

C’est alors qu’il y a un gros travail de maillage interne à réaliser, pour que Google puisse accéder à toutes vos pages et puisse bien les référencer.

Attention : Si vous avez déjà votre site indexé sur Google, il est important de ne faire aucune action pouvant modifier les URLs de vos pages. En effet, cela pourrait nuire fortement à votre trafic naturel actuel et envoyer un mauvais signal aux moteurs de recherche.

2. Créez du contenu pour augmenter sa présence sur Google

La création de contenu est l’une des étapes les plus importante dans l’amélioration de son référencement sur les moteurs de recherche. En ce qui concerne le contenu nous pouvons le voir de cette façon :

Plus vous avez de contenus visant chacun un mot-clé recherché en rapport avec votre domaine d’activité, plus vous aurez de chance d’apparaître et de drainer du trafic sur votre site. Plus vos contenus sont optimisés pour une requête précise, plus vous aurez de chance d’être bien positionné sur chacun de ces mots-clés.

Maintenant, créer un contenu « optimisé » c’est bien mignon, mais qu’est-ce que ça veut dire concrètement ?

Et bien, un contenu optimisé est un contenu pertinent, riche, aux ressources variées (texte, image, vidéo, graphiques…), qui répond le mieux possible à l’intention de recherche de l’internaute. Mais c’est aussi un côté légèrement plus technique dont voici les critères :

Une URL comportant le mot-clé du keyword visé Une balise title optimisé comportant le keyword Un texte comportant au minimum 1000 mots (bien que cela varie selon la requête) englobant tous les sujets autour du KW visé Des balises Hn optimisées Un maillage vers les pages soeurs / parentes

Comme vous pouvez le voir, les contenus demandent tout un travail de réflexion et d’optimisation permettant d’avoir une chance de correctement se référencer sur Google.

3. Travaillez le netlinking pour mieux se référencer sur Google

Dans la première partie sur la structure du site, nous avons parlé de maillage interne… Et bien nous entrons maintenant dans le linking externe. En effet, l’un des plus gros critères de Google en ce qui concerne le bon référencement d’un site est : la popularité d’un site sur internet.

Et oui, si de nombreux sites font des liens vers vous. Est-ce que cela ne veut pas dire qu’il est apprécié et propose du contenu de qualité ? Probablement.

Il est donc important de faire en sorte que des sites de thématiques similaires à la votre, réalisent des liens vers vous. Et ce, de manière régulière dans le temps. Evitez absolument de recevoir une centaine de lien durant la même journée, pour ne plus recevoir un seul lien par la suite.

Il existe aujourd’hui toujours quelques techniques pour avoir des liens naturels et gratuits vers son site web à l’aide du Linkbaiting. Notamment en réalisant des contenus de très bonne qualité et en offrant une excellente expérience utilisateur.

Cependant, nous n’allons pas nous le cacher, cela devient de plus en plus dur. Aujourd’hui, la négociation et la mise en place d’un budget devient indispensable. Les articles sponsorisés étant aujourd’hui le principal revenu des blogueurs.

Il existe aussi des moyens d’avoir des liens gratuits non naturels, mais attention à ce que cela soit très varié, modéré et propre au maximum. Il est conseillé d’opter pour cette solution sur des sites de type « money site » pour « spam » si vous ne souhaitez prendre strictement aucun risque.

4. Évitez les redirections et erreur 404 en masse

Lorsque j’étais chez un annonceur en tant que Chargée SEO, nous avons eu beaucoup de problématiques. Et l’une d’entre elles étaient les rédacteurs au coeur de l’entreprise. N’étant pas sensibilisés au SEO, il arrivait souvent que ceux-ci changent l’URL d’une page produit « pour faire plus beau ». Cela aurait pu générer une grande quantité d’erreurs 404 (l’ancienne URL étant indexées sur les moteurs de recherche, n’existant plus).

Bien heureusement, nos développeurs avaient prévu ce genre de cas pour qu’il y ait automatiquement une redirection 301 de l’ancienne URL vers la nouvelle URL. Si celle-ci n’avaient pas été présente, Google aurait finit sur des erreurs 404 soit « page introuvable » et nous aurions perdu son tout le trafic que cette page générait auparavant.

A l’inverse, la redirection 301 permet de récupérer en partie la puissance de l’ancienne page de sorte à conserver un bon référencement.

Attention cependant, la redirection 301 n’est pas idéale. Bien qu’elle permet de limiter la casse, un site ayant 3/4 des liens en redirection 301 enverra un mauvais signal à Google. Tout comme un site dont les URLs finissent souvent en erreur 404.

5. Vérifiez qu’il n’y a aucun contenu dupliqué interne / externe sur Google

Il est très courant de voir un contenu copier-coller d’une page à l’autre. Ne serait-ce qu’une partie du contenu, pour gagner du temps. Cela se nomme le duplicate content.

Le problème avec le duplicate content est que lorsque Google remarque deux contenus similaire, il va en sélectionner un pour l’indexer et les autres partiront au fin fond du gouffre et ne seront pas indexés. D’une part, si une partie de la page non indexées comportait un contenu unique, il est perdu, mais aussi cela renvoie un mauvais signal aux moteurs de recherche. La page indexée perdra potentiellement de sa puissance.

De nombreux points peuvent générer du contenu dupliqué tel que :

Les paramètres d’URLs (filtres, utm, etc.) La pagination Les pages produits dupliquées (ex: duplication de la page pour chaque couleur du produit) Les tags ou pages catégories générés automatiquement Le HTTP / HTTPs …

Il est possible que des sites externes duplique vos pages, tout simplement car ce sont des partenaires qui partagent un de vos produits, un affilié ou parfois, car il arrive que des SEOs mal-intentionnés souhaitent ruiner votre positionnement sur Google.

L’une des solutions contre le duplicate content à l’heure actuelle est l’intégration de la balise « rel=‘canonial’ ». Cela indique à Google quelle page indexer sur un lot de page dupliquée.

Améliorer son référencement sur Google : par où commencer ?

Et bien maintenant vous avez la majorité des clés en mains pour arriver à générer du trafic sur votre site web, et augmenter votre chiffre d’affaire. Pour cela il vous suffira :

Lister les mots-clés à potentiels sur lesquels vous aimeriez apparaître Imaginez le maillage du site Créer des contenus optimisés Commencez le netlinking externes Vérifiez qu’aucun problème technique survient

Voilà, à partir de la une bonne partie du travail sera réalisé et vous devriez commencer à avoir des résultats d’ici quelques mois. Et oui, le SEO c’est long en plus d’être incertain ! Mais généralement ça marche et c’est à ce moment là que l’on commence à en voir les bénéfices.

Roy Batty - Bladerunner II the edge of human book by KW Jeter He's more dangerous than most people and he is supremely pissed that a megacorporation has cloned him and didn't pay royalties. His first action in the book is detonating a bomb in a maternity ward, which sums up his personality. Nobody gets hurt. As it says in the book; “filed under cannons, loose”.

Princess Leia - Star wars film (no bloody number) Rules are for other people. (And damn, she was hot too.)

Stephanie Plum - Plum books by Janet Evanovich Funny, scatterbrained and the worst bounty hunter ever. Has two boyfriends that she can't decide between. Also probably carries a curse against driving.

John Dortmunder - Dortmunder books by Donald E Westlake A really good crook, great at planning heists but very unlucky when carrying them out.

Guig - Computer Connection book by Alfred Bester "Guig" is an alias and short for Grand Guignol. He is a murderer, but so charming nobody cares, and everybody but the cops regard it as a minor personality flaw. Became immortal when Krakatoa exploded (he was next to it) and hangs out with other immortals, and tries to recruit to their numbers (this is why he kills people).

Sam Vimes - Discworld books by Pratchett The man who was destined to be a police officer. Nobody has come even close to cop this hard. A man of great distrust.

Cugel - Cugel books by Jack Vance Cugel is a crook. Not a thief, but dishonest in a genetic way. He is so infuriating that he gets banished to the antipodes (as far away as you can get without leaving the planet) twice in one book.

Bob Howard - Laundry files books by Charles Stross A hacker, a civil servant, a problem-solver. Generally speaking he's fighting Lovecraftian monters while despising Lovecraft himself. As plot development kicks in over several books he becomes a good agent (and a crappy human being).

Death - Sandman comics by Neil Gaiman She gave us all hope, because she seems so NICE that most of us would welcome her at the end.
