Etymological origins of the names of the regions of Finland
Suomi, Häme = Of the same origin together with "Sámi". There is no certainty of their etymology, but a common theory suggests they'd be a loan from the Baltic "žemē", meaning "land". However, modern linguists seem to argue that this is also inaccurate.
Satakunta = From Swedish "hundare", a Viking Age and early Middle Age Scandinavian war and governance system.
Pirkanmaa = Possibly from "birk", a special legal protection given to trading centers (early 1200s).
Uusimaa = Translated from Swedish "Nyland" (New Land).
Kymenlaakso = "Valley of Kymi". Kymi is a river. The word itself means... a big river.
Pohjanmaa = "Northland".
Keski-Suomi = "Central Finland".
Savo = From "Savilahti" (Clay Bay), the old name of the Mikkeli area. The origin of "Savilahti" is still debated, if it was originally savi (clay), savu (smoke), sauvo, or possibly a Sámi word for a backwater (savo, savu).
Karjala = A bit unclear. It comes from the word "karja", and if this word is of Germanic origin, then it could mean (war)band.
Kainuu = Unknown. Theories include Germanic loan "kainu/kaino" (lowlands), "kainus" (knob-headed staff, wedge-shaped object), a Sámi origin (compare gaajnuo, gaajnuoladdje (non-Sámi peasant); kai´nōlatj (Swedish coastal peasant); kainolats, kainahaljo (Swedish or Norwegian peasant)), Old Icelandic "kveinir" (an unspecified Northern Nordic people) or Proto-Norse "gainuz" (gap, jaw) -> "kainu(s)" (dragnet, sleigh).
Lappi = The most controversial of them all, I'd say. "Lapp" name usually refers to Sámi people, although they do not like this term so don't call them that. As for the etymological origin of said word, two theories: 1) a translation of an ancient Sámi tribe name "wuowjoš", from the word "wuowˈje" (wedge, patch) -> "lapp" (patch, small piece of paper). Old Finnish term for Sámi people is "vuojolaiset". 2) Meaning a remote area. The region of "Lappi" in Finland is a combination of two lands: Peräpohjola (Back of the Northland) and the areas of Sápmi (in Finnish "Saamenmaa") which are within the borders of Finland. Former land is Finnish, the latter Sámi.
Ahvenanmaa = "Perch land". Two theories: either it comes from Proto-Norse "Ahvaland" (water land?), or the Finnish form is the original.
In Swedish in the cases where it differs from the Finnish origin:
Österbotten = "East Bottom". As opposed to West Bottom, Västerbotten, on the Swedish side of the Baltic Sea.
Kajanaland = From the historical Russian name for Kainuu, "Kajánij/Kayániy". Meaning unknown, though some say it means a land in which it is difficult to travel. Likely, it is connected to the word "Kainuu".
Tavastland = Apparently from Old Norse "Tafæistaland" (ᛏᛆᚠᛋᛏᛆᛚᚭᚿᛏ). Origin unknown, theories say the "ast" part could somehow be connected to Estonia.
Finland = Hahaha. Unknown. Old sources use the word "finn" and variants to refer to both Sámi and Finns and you never really know what's the intention (think of Finland and Finnmark). Theories say that the origin of the word could be connected to Germanic words such as "finthan" (find), "fendo" (wanderer).
Åland = "River land". Two theories: either it comes from Proto-Norse "Ahvaland" (water land?), or the Finnish from "Ahvenanmaa" (perch land) is the original.

Perhaps the strangest case of animal rescue in the history of the Kymenlaakso Rescue Department ongoing in Hamina as a walrus has decided to come ashore. The walrus is being kept wet while further measures are being determined.
A walrus has been spotted in Hamina, the southern coast of Finland. For an arctic animal, its chances of survival in these waters are slim according to Risto Väinölä of the Museum of Natural History. (x)

Heraldry and Emblem Wars Round 2
The second round of the Heraldry and Emblem Wars will start tomorrow! Congrats to the arms and emblems that made it past the prelims. So many amazing submissions unfortunately couldn’t make it to the second round. The poll I released to decide whether I would make a bracket graphic tied, so I decided to not make a graphic. I started making one, but it was difficult to fit all 32 arms and emblems into the image.
There will be 16 brackets in this round, divided into four groups. Four polls will be posted per day. I hope everyone has fun with the rest of the tournament!

Helsingin Sanomat is among the papers reporting that the Finnish branch of Extinction Rebellion (known in Finnish as Elokapina) has announced that it will be holding a week of protests in Helsinki and Tampere starting Monday, 9 October.
According to the groups, the marches will disrupt traffic in both cities.
"The purpose of the slow-moving processions is to slow traffic to a near standstill. With these slow marches, demonstrators are demanding that the use of forests in Finland be restored to a sustainable level," Elokapina stated in a press release quoted by the paper.
The marches are part of an autumn campaign by Elokapina pushing for the prioritization of the natural environment and diversity, and the ending of state subsidies that are destructive to the environment.
Finnair suspends flights to Israel
Finland's national airline Finnair has cancelled its regularly scheduled flights between Helsinki and Tel Aviv for the period of 9-14 October, due to the conflict in the region, reports Ilta-Sanomat.
According to the paper, for the time being Finnair will not use Israeli airspace for any of its flights. The company added that it is closely monitoring the situation and following instructions from authorities.
Finnair also announced that passengers with reservations on this route between 15 and 31 October 2023 can make changes to their bookings, if they so wish, or cancel and request a refund.
Tackling street gangs
The Joensuu-based daily Karjalainen presented its readers on Monday morning with a review of some media comments by national officials on measures they suggest to deal with criminal activities by street gangs.
The paper notes that among the suggestions, Justice Minister Leena Meri (Finns) wants to use to address the problem is extending criminal liability to 14-year-olds.
In an interview with Iltalehti, Meri pointed out however that this change is not a part of the current government's programme, which means that moving forward would would require wider political support.
The change has come up for discussion as street gangs are known to try to recruit young people under the age of 15 to commit crimes because they cannot be prosecuted.
"Currently, arrest, imprisonment or travel bans cannot be imposed on anyone under the age of 15. The possibility of using coercive measures should be expanded," Meri told Iltalehti.
Karjalainen notes that the government is preparing several changes in legislation aimed at combating street gang crime. One change will bring stiffer sentences for crimes committed as a gang member. In addition, sentences for aggravated assault and carrying an illegal weapon are to be increased.
The paper also notes that Maria Ohisalo (Green), a former Minister of the Interior, told Helsingin Sanomat that the police did not tell decision-makers about their concerns related to street gangs until the middle of the government term in 2021.
Ohisalo said that she is ready to support many of the measures being pushed by the current government, such as tougher punishments, and that she believes they will easily be backed by a large majority in parliament.
Cabling the countryside
According to Maaseudun Tulevaisuus, there are still an estimated 1.4 million households in Finland without access to high-speed fibre optic cable services.
At the turn of last year, less than 60 percent of properties had fixed broadband access in South Savo, South Karelia, Kymenlaakso, North Karelia, Central Finland, South Ostrobothnia and Lapland.
An estimated one third of a 32 million euro grant from the EU to develop these services has still not been spent. The government target is to ensure a one-gigabit internet connection for all citizens in 2030.
The government has stipulated the level of the contributions that local authorities have to make to building broadband networks in areas where they are not commercially viable. Municipalities are divided into three groups, whose shares are either 8, 22 or 33 percent of the costs.
According to Elina Ussa, CEO of the IT sector interest group FiCom, this development now depends on municipal decision-makers and whether or not the required permits will finally be available from a "one-stop shop" as promised by the Orpo government.
"Permit processes now take too long. The country's 309 municipalities have very different practices, and the network is often built in the area of several municipalities. The various requirements for permits are a challenge, and shallow cable installation, for example, may be restricted in residential areas," Ussa pointed out.
Ussa also noted that choice is another issue slowing coverage.
"Broadband subsidies - which only apply to the fixed network - have made fibre connections available to a total of 130,000 households, but only a third have subscribed. You have to pay for the connection, even if the network was built and brought to the property for free. Not everyone wants to pay more if online services work in other ways," she told MT.
Slippery morning roads
Iltalehti writes that roads may be "deceptively slippery" after nighttime sleet in some places.
Sleet and slush has made driving potential hazardous in an area stretching along the northwestern coast.
Monday is starting out cloudy in most parts of the country, but will become sunnier during the day. The most persistent cloud cover is expected in Kainuu, North Karelia, and eastern Lapland.
There may be rain showers on the west coast, and some sleet in Ostrobothnia.

Neulich bei Twitter: «Lesesafari – Schlage in zehn beliebigen Büchern aus deinem Regal S. 126 auf und lies den ersten kompletten Satz. Was hast du Spannendes entdeckt?»
Entdeckt habe ich dabei mehr als Spannendes, viele schöne Sätze zum Beispiel, pure Poesie im Nachschlagewerk, Merkwürdigkeiten in der «Erziehungskunst» und eine über einhundert Jahre alte Widmung.
So wanderten und ritten sie etwa eine Meile.

LiteraTour d‘Horizon | Was ist das?
«LiteraTour d‘Horizon»: Was ist das? Tour d‘Horizon bedeutet so viel wie «Überblick, Blickfeld», und die Literatour ist eine Wortschöpfung aus der Literatur und – eben – der Tour.
In loser Folge erscheinen in der LiteraTour d‘Horizon Buchbesprechungen, meist von Wiederentdeckungen, hin und wieder auch von Neuerscheinungen und -entdeckungen. Dabei geht es mir nicht darum, brillante Verrisse zu schreiben, sondern das, woran ich Gefallen finde, zu erzählen. Für die Besprechung der Werke werde ich nicht bezahlt und auch sonst in keiner Weise unterstützt. Die LiteraTour d‘Horizon ist vielmehr ein Liebhaberprojekt und der Versuch, schöne Werke aus den Bücherkisten zu holen und zugänglich zu machen.
Lese- und Besprechungstipps nehme ich allerdings gerne entgegen. Wer mag, darf mir auch Leseexemplare schicken, wobei ich mir ausdrücklich vorbehalte, von einer Besprechung abzusehen.

Didn’t quite exactly do the prompt but something similar haha.
Ended up drawing the cat wearing the regional folk dress of Anjala/Kymenlaakso region in Finland, as that region is around where I’ve lived most of my life in, and after deciding to do that I ended up making the flowers in the background Iris pseudacorus which is the regional flower of the same region.

Thursday's snowfall was unprecedented in Pyhtää, Kymenlaakso, where a measuring station recorded some 32 centimetres of snow cover. Such deep snow cover has never before been recorded at this time of year in Kymenlaakso, according to Yle meteorologist Anne Borgström.
Borgström said snowfall had been pretty much uninterrupted in Pyhtää since the morning of Independence Day on 6 December, and was forecast to continue on Thursday evening as well.
Uusimaa and Päijät-Häme have also seen decent snowfall, while in helsinki snow cover stood at 23 centimetres.
