Yes and SOME OF US (me) have been saying this for some time and have plenty of ideas that don’t involve Austen or a British setting so, y’know, I’m a historical gun for hire on this one.
I’m just feeling very validated that people are seeing my vision.

1885 edition of the brick!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i get irrationally drawn to certain objects i see, and unfortunately, this pretty overpriced 1885 edition of les miserables was that item i was drawn to. i needed it.
from my research, this edition was printed all throughout the 1880s along with illustrated editions of many of hugo’s works.
i’m sure you recognize at least a couple of the illustrations here, as these are full of the classic gustav brion and emile bayard illustrations (including the famed one of cosette!)
these images are just a fraction of the amount of illustrations throughout it. it is PACKED with illustrations, almost every chapter having one as this edition has ones done by multiple artists. this clearly was even higher end for the time! it’s filled with illustrations, impressively large, sturdy covers, and i don’t know if it’s just me but the paper does feel stronger than some from books ive worked with or owned from this period.
while flipping through the pages, it definitely feels soulful. on several of the pages, there’s clearly a thumb indent from reading, which might be annoying to some. but to me it makes it all the more charming. clearly, someone throughly enjoyed it. whoever this person was, i feel connected to them a little bit.
this edition is BEAUTIFUL and i am very proud to own it!

its really starting to bother me that theres so little to be done for karlach in act 3. like when you first meet dammon he seems so hopeful about finding a solution. he runs through a bunch of ideas and says he cant do anything with the tools he has but he'll keep looking. and then when you meet him in act 2 hes says he cant think of anything but he'll keep trying. and then in act 3?? all he says is that he cant find a solution. theres no way to ask him what research hes been doing. no way to try and do any research yourself.
karlach's companion quest basically ends in act 2. you get that second upgrade and it doesn't make a difference to the way her endings turn out. yeah you can touch her, but that's it. theres still only two 'good' endings for her character.
and it feels like theres so much we should be trying to do? the steel watchers are made of infernal iron. every single watcher has a piece of infernal iron you can collect. some of them even have enriched infernal iron. and apart from the armor dammon can make... there's nothing else to be done with those pieces? even the enriched infernal iron doesnt seem to serve a bigger purpose.
i feel like i should be able to talk to the gondian gnomes for help. they built the steel watchers, which are made of infernal iron and can blast hellfire at you. we can literally go to hell and theres no way to look around or ask about a solution. theres a magic tower with a locked vault and no way to look for magic to nullify/contain the heat.
also we cant talk to karlach about going to stay in the house of hope? i know one of the endings is that she can go to avernus with wyll but shouldn't we be able to suggest she can stay with hope? who's literally trying to make a place of hope in the middle of the hells? theres even portals in one of the rooms to a bunch of places. she could come and go as she pleases. we already have the means to visit if we want.
like i get it the whole point is that shes doomed from the start tragedy etc etc but it still sucks that we can't at least try to do more when it feels like theres so many ways we should be able to

every new iteration of les mis really does give something new. the slight changes in the vocals, the staging.... anyways im at a concert showing and am in awe.
the singer playing fauntine managed perfect singing while somehow cramming so much emotion in. cosette singing castle on a sky... fluffiest? one ive heard in a while.
and just from the ABC song, enjolras here has such a strong voice. so compelling. the grantaire is playing, adding lots of flairs.
truly live shows are something people deserve to be able to see multiple times. to enjoy the spectrum, appreciate the angles, or even just to concentrate or have different parts highlighted.... so important

the musicalification of les mis has done irreparable damage to that work's legacy. not because I think it's bad or anything but because many people will never experience the epic highs and lows of that book. you will simultaneously read one of the greatest stories ever and also a deep, multiple chapters long commentary about the battle of waterloo that's only connected to the plot in the last 3 lines of the whole digression. you will find yourself frantically reading the final part of the book, and then one of the most intense scenes is interrupted because Hugo wants to talk about the sewers.the paris sewers.for multiple pages.also the book starts with a long ass story about a french nobleman escaping from france and becoming a bishop.for 50 pages.unmatched reading experience

Listen, don't bury your gay characters
but damnit if I don't love me some tragic gays
I hope someday we can get to a place where we have enough happy and alive queers that we can have some tragic, angsty gays too because I eat that shit up.
I want to see them scream and cry and lose each other, just like the straight couples get to do.

feeling insane abt javert again.
he is a fascinating character to analyze + compare against valjean + is such an interesting personification of the faults of the french legal system, of the way lawfulness can become twisted when not tempered by mercy. dedication to the flawed human construct of justice versus dedication to the religious concept of mercy + forgiveness.
but. more importantly: javert is fucking hilarious. his sense of humor is so dry + off-putting. he takes himself so seriously but his comments are so jarringly silly. i adore my fucked up little plot device of a man.
