Thinking about public transport

in sydney the they are trying to make parramatta a second central business district (to make the lives of ppl living in western sydney not just constant commuting into the city.) the only other one is the place with the harbour bridge and the place where the operas are. but bcs of this, theyre making a metro in parramatta and a lightrail system. A SECOND LIGHTRAIL SYSTEM. 

I WAS SAD WE DIDNT HAVE TRAMS WHEN I WAS A CHILD. WE ARE IN THE TRAM RESURGENCE. THIS WAS WELL WORTH THE DEATH OF THE MONORAIL

dont even get me started in public transport as a motif in storytelling. like the everyday mundanity of it all, the symbolism of waiting shown through bus stops and train station. ARGH ITS SO COOL

(Werbung) Wenn mal die Kamera nicht zur Hand ist, muss das Telefon her. Und das kann oft was… Letzte Woche stieg ich im Bahnhof Rosenthaler Platz aus. Ich mag diesen Bahnhof mit seinem Orange sehr. Deshalb blieb ich für einige Fotos dort. Wusstest du, dass dieser Bahnhof früher ein Geisterbahnhof war? Vom 13. August 1961 an war Rosenthaler Platz ein solcher Geisterbahnhof. Die Züge des West-Berliner Netzes durchfuhren die in Ost-Berlin gelegene Station ohne Halt. Am 22. Dezember 1989 wurde er als zweiter wieder in Betrieb genommen, um den Ansturm der DDR-Bürger in den westlichen Teil Berlins besser abzufangen. Er wurde unter anderem wegen seiner guten Straßenbahn-Verbindung ausgewählt. Bis zum 1. Juli 1990 blieb er nach dem U-Bahnhof Jannowitzbrücke der einzige wiedereröffnete Geisterbahnhof, der von Ost-Berlin aus zugänglich war. Der Bahnhof zeigt sich heute noch in seinem Zustand von 1930 und steht unter Denkmalschutz. my biggest soapbox is that somebody HAS to get lightrail to bucaramanga, santander, colombia like

- that city is ridiculously well set up for it, there's a perfect street to put it in right in the middle

- no place in the city would be more than a 30 minute walk from the lightrail

- EVERYONE would ride it. culturally speaking they would embrace it immediately. most people already ride motorcycles to save on gas, this is the logical next step

- THE CITY IS SO DENSE that its absolutely insane they don't have functional public transit. like think roughly halfway between the density of san francisco and brooklyn, but a bit closer to the brooklyn side.

- again, their current public transit is absolutely unusable and also actively making quality of life worse. their few, overpriced busses are literally from the 80s and spew black smoke everywhere. if you walk on any busy street the air quality is pretty bad and it's mostly because of the busses (again, people there mostly prefer fuel efficient vehicles that don't cause much air pollution)

- it would be much less expensive than putting light rail in many other cities, as mentioned before only one line would be needed and since it's such a dense, geographically small city it wouldn't even be a particularly long line. materials and manpower would also be much cheaper than building it in a country with a higher cost of living.

THIS WOULD COMPLETELY REVOLUTIONIZE THE CITY.

i firmly believe that just adding lightrail would dramatically improve the quality of life of every single person in the city. most people would ride it, their commutes would be faster and much less of their income would be spent on transportation. the few people that didn't switch would have MUCH faster commutes as almost all traffic would be eliminated. the pedestrian experience would be better both due to less cars and motos and the elimination or near-elimination of the highly air polluting busses. it would also cause less pollution - not that eliminating c02 emissions should be put primarily on third world countries that already emit much less on average than countries like the US but this would be a much easier switch than any other city I've visited and would create a bigger difference since adding this sort of infrastructure to most cities in the US would not encourage nearly as high of a percentage of people to switch due to our absolutely batshit car culture here (US i mean). also

THERE'S LITERALLY NO DRAWBACKS EVERY SINGLE PERSON WOULD LOVE IT AND IT WOULD MAKE EVERYONE'S LIVES BETTER.

so yeah if you're reading this and you have like around 2 billion dollars* to spare this is my recommendation for something that would make a HUGE difference that nobody's even bothering to consider

*calculated at 100 million dollars per mile (US number so it would most likely actually be far far less) for the 15 miles from the northern end of Bucaramanga to central Piedecuesta, a suburb and home to Universidad Industrial de Santander. an additional 2-6 mile line connecting Bucaramanga to the neighboring town of Girón would also be absolutely amazing.
