Logo adalah simbol atau identitas yang digunakan sebagai tanda atau alamat bertujuan untuk mengkomunikasikan arti dan memberikan makna yang ada dalam jati diri suatu kelompok atau perseorangan yang mempunyai suatu tujuan. Fungsi logo juga dapat dijadikan sebagai jiwa yang menghidupkan dan memberikan semangat bagi yang anggota yang memiliki logo tersebut dalam melaksanakan misi dan mencapai tujuan bersama. Bisa disimpulkan bahwa logo merupakan gambar atau sekedar sketsa dengan arti tertentu, dan mewakili suatu arti yang bertujuan untuk mudah diingat.

Dalam kehidupan sehari-hari banyak sekali ditemukan bentuk gambar atau simbol untuk menyimbol- kan atau mengindentifikasikan sesuatu. Sebagai contoh bentuk gambar simbol produk Nike, Adidas, Puma, dan lain-lain. Gambar-gambar tersebut disebut dengan logo.

Logo adalah suatu identitas yang digunakan untuk menggambarkan citra dan karakter dari suatu lembaga, perusahaan, organisasi, atau hal lainnya. Logo didesain untuk menggambarkan citra positif dari suatu perusahaan. Logo terdapat dua jenis, yaitu Logogram dan Logotype.

Logogram adalah logo yang berupa gambar atau picture mark, suatu identitas yang dipergunakan untuk menggambarkan citra atau karakter dari sesuatu yang disimbolkannya.

Logotype adalah logo yang berupa kata atau word mark yang ditampilkan dalam bentuk gambar tulisan yang bisa dibaca untuk menyimbolkan sesuatu

Dalam pembuatannya, sebuah logo diperlukan beberapa aspek sehingga tercapai bentuk dari logo tersebut kepada orang awam. Berikut aspek yang diperlukan untuk membuat logo yang sebaik-baiknya :

Sederhana. Logo yang baik itu berbentuk sederhana dan tidak banyak variasi, pesan dari gambar logo tersampaikan dan mudah dicerna. Tidak hanya bentuknya saja yang sederhana, sebuah logo harus berbeda dan tidak membosankan jika dilihat.

Mudah diingat dan dimengerti. Logo yang baik itu adalah logo yang dapat dengan mudah menyampaikan pesan atau identitas dalam sekali lihat.

Tahan lama. Logo yang baik itu dapat tahan lama dan tidak termakan oleh tren. Meskipun dalam jangka waktu lama pun tidak terkesan jika logo tersebut kuno. Sehingga tidak perlu dibuatkan logo baru setiap ada tren baru.

Nyaman dipandang. Logo yang tidak rapi dan terlihat tidak nyaman dipandang maka akan dilewatkan. Jika hal tersebut terjadi, maka akan menyimpulkan bahwa pemilik logo tersebut tidak profesional

Sesuai fungsi. Logo akan menyimbolkan sesuatu sehingga yang melihat logo tersebut dapat mengerti apa yang menjadi pesan terhadap logo tersebut. Bayangkan jika sebuah logo bergambar kamera, tetapi perusahaan tersebut bergerak dibidang alat berat. Maka akan menyiratkan jika logo tersebut tidak menyimbolkan fungsi dari perusahaan tersebut.

Tepat. Ada persepsi yang sering ditangkap seseorang saat pertama kali melihat sebuah logo Logo yang tepat adalah logo yang sesuai dengan persepsi dan daya tangkap manusia. Sebagai contoh sebuah logo tanda plus (+) yang biasa menyimbolkan rumah sakit tetapi terpasang pada pemadam kebakaran.

Unik dan menarik. Logo yang menarik akan menjadi daya tarik seseorang, sehingga logo tersebut mempunyai kesan tersendiri pada seseorang.

Pembuatan sebuah logo memiliki fungsi tertentu, sehingga tidak hanya menampilkan gambar saja. Sebuah logo akan mempermudah penyampaian pesan kepada sesorang. Pesan yang biasa disampaikan dalam bentuk tulisan, dengan memperhatikan sebuah logo maka akan mempermudah penyampaian pesan seseorang melalui sebuah gambar. Berikut fungsi dari logo adalah:

Mengidentifikasi suatu perusahaan, organisasi, pesan, dan lain sebagainya.

Membedakan dari suatu produk dengan produk lainnya. Sebagai contoh produk peralatan olahraga, yaitu Nike, Adidas, Puma, dan lain sebagainya.

Mengkomunikasikan informasi seperti keaslian dari produk, nilai dari produk, dan kualitas.

Menambah nilai, karena jika bentuk logo terlihat baik dan menarik akan menentukan pendapatsesorang pada penilaian produk tersebut.

Properti legal suatu produk atau organisasi.
