5 Mile Run, Easy Pace
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I took the hilly route today, and crushed it! 💪🏻 I used to need to break this one up into run/walk blocks.

Actually starting Chicago training this week. Last week was a bust.
This week is gonna be sporadic due to appointments after work, but my goal is running 3 times this week.
I have 27 weeks, I can do this.
I can do this.
I also need to work on fueling and finding what works for me.

That's not one race this weekend, but three! A total of 30.3 miles! Because why not do your first marathon after running a one miler and 5k?
At 6:41:39, I finished dead last in my age group for the marathon. I couldn't be happier. That's with chronic anemia caused by hereditary spherocytosis, a femur that is pinned together, and running 4.1 miles the day before. My goal was to finish and I did.

Beyond just finishing, running through Detroit was an absolute privilege. We ran into Canada and back out again, wound our way through Eastern Market, got to enjoy the amazing Halloween decorations in Indian Village and enjoyed an amazing sunrise.
Most importantly, it was an amazing birthday weekend for my little sister, Kız, to enjoy what has really been the balm in her life, the absolutely crazy and welcoming endurance sports community.
It'll probably be a couple years before I go for a second marathon, but I'm looking forward to

Apparently if you run 5 miles down my regular trail it becomes completely unpaved which I’m not sure I like. Also I walked so much during this but I almost ran the last mile and half without stopping and I’m seriously considering signing up for a half in 3 weeks.

So earlier this week…
I was told “you’re only good for one thing”.
What that one thing is, I don’t know and, to be honest, I don’t care. Not anymore. I’m done letting this affect me and I’m done bitching about it, because the person all that resentment is directed at is dead.
He died on May 15, 2018 and as far as I’m concerned, all my thoughts of ideation was probably just me trying to synchronize with that guy.
I’m sure he’ll be missed.
Yes, I denied and buried what my X did to me in the past but I sure as hell didn’t let it define me - and I’m doubly sure as hell not going to let this either.
I’m not going to let this affect the kind of person I want to be for myself and should be to anyone else I give a damn about.
That said, these miles aren’t going to run themselves.
Speaking of which, what started out as a 10k ended up as one of these…

This was on March 3. My middle toes are still bruised three weeks later.

Today is day 3 of my eight month marathon training. I’ve always been a mostly sedentary person. I’m not the least bit into fitness and I don’t follow sports. But I had two grandparents have heart attacks in their mid fifties. I don’t really want to die that young. I’m forty years old now so there’s still time to get into better shape. I don’t care about competition or being supermodel thin but I do want more time to read books. I want to read ALL the books.
Anyway, I made it a little further on my jog today than I did two days ago. Yesterday was a rest day. Tomorrow is a rest day. I am less tired than I was two days ago. I think this is going to work out just fine. I have eight months to be ready for the marathon I registered for. Eight months is enough time, isn’t it?

I fell down and my whole body hurts and it was difficult to breathe even though the air quality report said it was okay-ish. The sun wasn't supposed to look like that. I have cuts and bruises and ouch. I did it, though! I was going so much faster before I fell.

Nobody warned me that training for a marathon would mean living in perpetual hunger.

More marathon training this month as it's actually warm enough to run outside instead of just doing cardio inside.
Time spent with my human
Lots of superfood shakes

First ever interval training session!
Tumblr media
Marathon training started this week and it’s going pretty well. It’s only been two days but so far so good. I’m glad I picked the Soldier Field area because the park was more populated than I expected and I’m doing speed training.
As with any athletic endeavor — or just life in general — these things are not without some risk. I scraped up my legs pretty good but I’m just glad it happened at a walking pace over mulch and not running on concrete (there was a section of pavement that was flooded and I had to navigate around it. All that time spent playing the Uncharted series paid off).
The main point is that I got back up and was able to continue. (It’s also a good thing I carry a first aid kit with me).
