Here are my reviews of the nine Phantom of the Opera adaptations I own on dvd (I have than these digitally but for now I'm just doing my dvds)

Phantom of the opera (1925) - Lon Chaney

Accurate to the book in a lot of ways, good soundtrack and atmosphere, amazing makeup for Erik

The changed ending takes away from the story and the silent movie format doesn't work well with the emphasis on singing

Phantom of the opera (1943) - Claude Raines

Christine just vibes the whole time, fun interactions between the two normal suitors

Less sympathetic Erik, all the names are changed, less horror, weirdly would have worked better if they did their original plan of having Erik be Christine's estranged father

Keeps the horror part intact I guess?? Prosthetics good

Everyone has different names, the main plot is changed for the worse and there is no levity, Erik is a creep even before his "transformation"

Good song as Erik's hallmark, good prosthetics, good casting and references to the book

Supernatural elements and changed backstop for Erik lessens sympathy for Erik, somewhat hard to follow plot

Great cast, keeps the spirit of love and tragedy from the book, all plot changes work well, SO SAD

Why change Raoul to Philippe? Some lip-syncing not so good

Some of the singing is iffy, having old man Raoul popping up all the time is kinda boring, all the age changes (especially the age at which Erik started teaching Christine) are for the worse

Children by Evdokia Lopukhina(1669 - 1691). Died during childbirth.

Alexey(1690 - 1700). The eldest son and heir of Peter I and his first wife Evdokia Lopukhina. He had good mental abilities, but poor health. He died at the age of 10.

Alexander(1691). Died a few days after his birth.

Catherine(1707 - 1773). The third child of Peter the Great, but the first child of his mother Catherine Alexeevna. Was named in honor of her mother. Queen of Sweden, wife of Adolf Frederick and mother of 10 children: Charles VIII, Sophia, Christian, Albertina, Fredericka, Christina, August, Amelia, Maria and Gustav.

Anna(1708 - 1728). Duchess - Consort of Holstein of Gottorp. Wife of Carl Friedrich of Holstein of Gottorp and mother of his son Carl Peter Ulrich. Died at the age of 20 from cold complications.

Elizabeth(1709 - 1762). She was the favorite daughter of Peter I, he affectionately called her Lizette. Queen of France, wife of Louis XV, mother of 8 children: Victoria, Jeanne, Louis XVI, Adelaide, Charles, Philippe, Antoine, Catherine.

Natalia(1713 - 1733). She was never married and had no children. Because of her fragile health, the tsarevna spent most of her life near her parents.

Peter II(1715 - 1777). Emperor of All the Russians. The long-awaited son of Peter I and Catherine Alexeevna. In honor of the birth of the heir, the emperor organized a great feast. The tsarevich had good health and high mental abilities. The future emperor was the pride of his parents. Peter II was popularly nicknamed the liberator, because he abolished serfdom. não  é  surpresa  contar  com  a  presença  de  BARTHOLOMÄUS PHILIPP FLICK  no  instituto  de  rosis  esse  ano !   todos  sabem  que  ele  é  um  DUQUE ,  vindo  da  ÁUSTRIA ,  porque  aqui  as  fofocas  correm  rápido .  ouvi  dizer  que  apesar  de  seus  VINTE  E  TRÊS  anos ,  ele  pode  ser  bastante  CRUEL  quando  está  de  mau  humor ,  mas  sua  SAGACIDADE  compensa  .

bartholomäus é o gêmeo mais novo do rei da áustria, e também o menos interessado no trono. filho de uma das muitas princesas reais (concubinas do rei, já que mulheres nunca ascendem ao título de rainha no país), a infância não passou de constantes abusos e lavagem cerebral para a que se tornasse propriamente um seguidor da constância. desde leituras exaustivas, haviam punições intensas e que sua insolência sempre piorava. 

isso sempre despertou revolta ao invés de conformação, o que nunca desceu bem com o pai. foi tirado de perto da mãe ainda mero bebê, já que as mulheres da corte não ficam responsáveis pela criação de filhos homens, ainda assim nutre um carinho quase não-natural para si pela mulher e é extremamente protetor de sua posição na corte. 

o fanatismo não o pegou, apesar das surras ou todos os outros castigos, mas com certeza o deixou pior. mäus se tornou alguém que almejava ser o opressor, depois de tudo que passou. usa e abusa de sua posição, e é extremamente cruel e sádico. seu comportamento para os venéficus são hostis, os considerando extremamente inferiores, ainda que suas maldades atinjam também os de mesmo status que o seu. tem um gosto por brigas e se não está participando, certamente está incentivando. renega a coroa com veemência e diz sempre que jamais será rei, feliz em manter a posição de mero bêbado (como quase sempre está) e rogue. 

apesar de não o redimir, existe outro lado além de o de ameaça: dotado de um charme descomunal, é ótimo na lábia e em convencer quase todos do que deseja, carismático como ninguém (ainda que muito sarcástico). ótimo anfitrião, sabe entreter e é hospitaleiro com aqueles que julga merecedores; também muito esperto, pouco escapa de sua atenção e, é, acima de tudo um homem bem-lido, que se orgulha do intelectualismo que possui.

mäus não sabe manusear armas e nem é tão bom assim de briga; na maioria das vezes consegue pessoas para fazer a parte brutal de suas brigas e se diverte muito mais observando. 

odeia qualquer menção a constância, ainda que não se proclame abertamente contra os perseguidores para evitar represálias do pai e de outros que pensam de forma igual. briga por muitas coisas, porém não por isso.

tecnicamente, se apresenta como um bom diplomata, mas é muito mais adepto a manipulações e mentiras do que realmente dialogar. 

criado na corte austríaca, sua relação com mulheres é complicada. mesmo depois de anos no instituto, a relação de igualdade entre homens e mulheres lhe é estranha e desconfortável. apesar disso, a companhia de damas é algo que presa muito, considerando apenas natural se cercar dessas.

dito isso, não é conhecido por ser um amante cruel, ainda que em outros âmbitos o seja considerado. se diz incapaz de se apaixonar, mas se demonstra um tanto quanto cavalheiro e cuidado com as meninas.

é inteligente, ainda que suas notas tentem o dizer o contrário, só não considera as matérias do instituto merecedoras de sua atenção e dedicação. 

amizade é uma palavra forte, mas não que ele se oponha por completo. ainda assim, sempre sente ser merecedor de ser o líder do grupo, vendo tudo como uma grande hierarquia. 

beber e fumar são coisas naturais e que faz desde muito novo, inclusive é comum estar intoxicado por aí.

com a presença constante do fantasma de uma força maligna já não mais existente, a corte austríaca e seus rituais sempre foram ditados por uma crença fervorosa e sem espaços para questionamentos, quiçá rebeldias. a abertura dos pulmões mal fora ouvida por cima dos cânticos que lhe acompanhariam e iriam o assombrar, desde do tirar dos braços da mãe para que o pai pudesse inspecionar a si e ao gêmeo até seus últimos suspiros, sem dúvidas.

num palácio hostil, surge o que viria a ser batholomäus, mera criação de seus arredores e responsáveis. a princesa real, simples subjugada fosse do reino fosse do marido ou até mesmo da religião, retraída em sua posição de para sempre inferior, mal teve os filhos nos seios antes de ser obrigada a ceder qualquer posse sob para o rei e os perseguidores da constância. erro crasso que não poderia ser evitado.

ensinamentos exaustivos, começados da tenra idade, tinham como intenção empestar a mente, até então inocente, de credos e defesas cegas da constância. em meio a fanatismo puro, a natureza insolente era punida com rigor – trancafiado em confessionários, tendo a mente torturada, exaustão chegando antes do arrependimento demandado; qualquer que fosse o respeito se tornando em ira e puro desejo de um dia se tornar o opressor. 

extravasar se fez possível quando pôs os pés em rosis, liberdade e reverência recebida lhe dando tudo aquilo que sempre quis e almejara. de retraído e silencioso, a faceta mudara para a de alguém que não deseja nada além de ver todos pagarem pelo que lhe foi cometido – aparências só mantidas quando entre fronteiras austríacas, de mal grado e sem verdade alguma. 

mäus se traduz nas entrelinhas mal interpretadas de escrituras sagradas e cânticos constânticos, não há, talvez, justificação própria para o que faz e como age, mas deposita créditos nas costas dos perseguidores. portando-se como alguém carregado de descaso às instituições e, principalmente, à coroa, o álcool constante em veias sempre ajudando a espalhar a reputação maculada. a sedução aprendida para angariar seguidores para a fé é posta em prática subversivamente. 

impiedoso, o gosto por sangue, ainda que não porte arma alguma, é mascarado e relevado quando encoberto por lábia e mente afiada, uma que o diz superior a qualquer um que lhe cerque.
