I just realized something.
The REAL reason Dragonair evolves into Dragonite and changes its design so drastically is because... their typing is Dragon. Stick with me. They were the original sole representatives of the type called “Dragon type”, not just in english but also in the original japanese (ドラゴンタイプ Doragon taipu).
What we tend to call “eastern dragon” (more snake-like) is actually a very different creature to what we know as the “western dragon” or just “dragon” (big legs & body, bat-like wings). The former goes by ryu in Japan, loong in China, etc. The later tends to actually be called “dragon” everywhere in the world.
And notice that the type is NOT called the “Ryu type” or the “Loong type” in Japanese.
So! The line begins as infant ryu/loong in the form of Dratini and Dragonair, snake-like beings holding a pearl... but because they are dragon types they end up morphing into a “western dragon”, a “proper” dragon.
I imagine something like this gave Pokemon more “personality” in its native Japan. It may have been “exotic”. Granted, Dragonite’s japanese name is Kairyu, but that could be part of the irony (especially since it’s written in hiragana rather than the more formal kanji).
Rayquaza would be the first proper ryu/loong.
btw this is similar to how the kirin is not a unicorn and the fenghuang is not a phoenix

A possible new connection between the Arcanine and Medicham lines?
Tumblr media
The coming game Pokemon Legends: Arceus will take place in an ancient version of the Sinnoh region, Hisui. The most spiritual and myth-filled of the pokemon settings will have an aestethic based on medieval Japan. It’s likely to be one of the most “japanese” Pokemon games we’ve had since the “Conquest” spin-off.
Some of the new evolutions and forms seem to confirm this, with the fish Basculin getting a more dragon-like evolution called Basculegion, but more importantly to this post the dog pokemon Growlithe is getting a new rock-type form wich seems to be taking inspiration from the Shisa.
Tumblr media
Growlithe’s new “fur” has been stated to be made of rock, and it’s filled with spirals. The line has always been a dog-tiger hybrid of sorts. Now consider that in Okinawa, Japan, the Shisa is a beast inspired by the Komainu that combines elements of dog and lion, often adorned with spirals, often in the form of statues, who serve as guardians of, among other sacred places, buddhist temples. The inspiration is very clear. King Caesar from Godzilla and Komasan from Yo-kai Watch are other examples of monsters based on the Shisa.
Meanwhile, there is some confusion (at least among western fans) about the inspiration behind the pokemon Meditite and Medicham, possibly because of orientalism. Many have called them “belly-dancers”, “hindu deities” and “genies”, all very conflicting concepts, but I have reasons to believe they are actually based on Buddha statues.
Tumblr media
Meditite, who looks like a baby doing the meditating “lotus position”, was originaly found in the games Ruby and Saphire at the entrance of a graveyard on Mount Pyre. Another pokemon found there is Vulpix, based on the kitsune. In graveyards of Japan it’s common to find both shrines dedicated to Inari (a kitsune like Vulpix) as well as statues dedicated to the buddha Ojizō-sama (shown above). These statues are often baby-like in appearence, because this buddha is known to protect the souls of babies and kids that died too young. I believe Meditite is based on, or at least in these games is a reference to, these Ojizō-sama statues. The brows-nose pattern is similar to the border of Meditite’s “helmet”, and Meditite’s “ears” resemble the spiral pattern commonly found in the hair of many Buddha statues.
To not make this post too long its evolution Medicham has several traits of depictions of buddhas (the ushnisha, the earlobes, the round lips) and Mega Medicham is most definetly based on a bodhisattva (its extra arms actually being the iconic floating cloth or tenne).
Tumblr media
So back to Growlithe and Meditite, they both have a similar pointy white head with similar round spiral patterns, and both Shisa and Buddha statues (their likely inspirations) have spiral patterns in their hairs. I don’t know if this pattern is a coincidence or intentional in real life, but it could be that the lore of these pokemon is about to be connected due to their shared buddhist background and this new design for Growlithe reflects that.
As already said, Sinnoh is the most spiritual of the pokemon regions, with the box legendaries being somewhat based on Japan’s creation myth. The fact that buddha statues are everywhere in Japan could be the reason Meditite and Medicham are everywhere in Sinnoh (to the point that one would be forgiven to think they debuted in that region’s games), and will probably be the case in Hisui too.
It remains to be seen what Arcanine, Meditite and Medicham will look like in Legends, or if the later two will appear at all. Even if I’m wrong (and this could totally be wishful thinking on my part), I still believe Meditite and Medicham have a lot of unexplored potential both by official media and fan content. A lot could be done with them by portraying them as living buddha-like statues. They could be in the background, hiding among actual statues, waiting to attack anyone who disturbs the sacred place they are in.

The casual reveal that the pokemon in Detective Pikachu are empaths rather than outright understanding of human language puts the Lickitung scene in a new light. It wasn’t just gross-out humor, that Lickitung sensed Tim’s feelings and tried to comfort him.

The Tapasa from Berserk are essentially what you’ll get if a Medicham was ripped like a Machoke or if a Machoke had been adopted and raised by a Medicham.

Similar spiral formations on the head.
Two oval marks in the face.
”Helmet” with a “m”-like outline and pointy at the top.
Fighting as primary type.
Conclusion: Marshadow is the ghost of a Meditite!

It’s a crime that the Genesect, Diancie and Hoopa movies didn’t have their respective prequel specials as part of said movies. They improve them.
Me thinks the Volcanion movie turned out better in no small part because it was fully self-contained.

I may be in a minority here, buy I love Calyrex. It has such a mysteryous, powerful aura to it. I really like the combination of hare, insect and plant elements in what’s definetly a nature deity of sorts. Its overly long and thin legs may come across as weird to many, but I think they reinforce the idea of Calyrex not needing them because it can float around with its psychic powers.
Tumblr media
(Tough I may be biased because I’m a Zelda fan and because its bud head reminds me of Meditite)

Don’t get me wrong, Rayquaza is one of my favorite legendaries, and I get the ground/water/sky & behemoth/leviathan/ziz themes it has going for alongside Groudon and Kyogre........ but...
Does anyone else think... that it would have been more fitting to the themes of those games... to have the mediator between the Ground pokemon and the Water pokemon..... be a Grass type instead?
You know, plants needing both ground and water in balance to exist? And having their conflict be solved by creating and protecting something together instead of by summoning an even stronger entity to intimidate them?
I just think it was a missed opportunity, especially considering how long we had to wait for a grass legendary.

You know Detective Pikachu is brilliant when it isn’t content with just avoiding the dreaded “uncanny valley” effect with its pokemon designs, it also goes out of its way to use the uncanny valley to its advantage. You probably know wich sequences I’m talking about. One was used heavily in the trailers, while the other one from the climax was kept a secret.
It kind of reminds me of the original Toy Story, actually: the people behind it were aware of the limitations of cgi at the time and avoided the uncanny valley by making the protagonists toys; but they also went out of their way to use the uncanny valley to their advantage by making the antagonists a human kid and a dog, wich looked creepy and wrong and that drove the point home that they were the bad guys (notice how the “good” humans had their faces out of focus most of the time).
Toy Story proved that cgi could be used for feature-lenght animated movies in more ways than one. Detective Pikachu proved that a series like Pokemon can in fact be made in live action, and any creature can be used to their full potential even if not all of them are cute and traditionally appealing like Pikachu. They both knew when to avoid and when to use the uncanny valley effect.

Detective Pikachu Spoilers
Can we take a moment to appreciate how ingenuous the use of Ditto was? Taking its abilities to their logical extreme, as well as referencing the gag from the anime that it’s most known for, while also providing an explanation for it all that makes sense between the context of the movie and that allows it to not be in conflict with the pokemon from the games (and provided in passing, no less)?
Well played, people who worked on the movie.

You know this pokemon Audino?
Tumblr media
Cute, sweet, kind Audino? The nurse of pokemon?
And you know the movie Detective Pikachu?
And you know how several Audino appear in Detective Pikachu?
Tumblr media
I can’t stop thinking about that one Audino among the audience of that underground cage match, enthusiastically cheering and waving its fist as Charizard is trying to kill the titular Pikachu.
I want to know more about that Audino.

Fun fact! According to this one scene from the Diamond and Pearl anime, Meditite has blue eyes. Come Gen 6 some years later, Meditite’s evolution Medicham woulg get a Mega Evolution with blue eyes:
Tumblr media
This MAY or MAY NOT be a reference to how the buddha are often represented with blue eyes for symbolic reasons.

Detective Pikachu SPOILERS ahead
I’ve seen some articles and people explain the ending of the movie by claiming that the dad’s partner is actually “just a regular Pikachu”....
I’m sorry, but this just isn’t true. While this Pikachu may not actually have Ryan Reynolds’ voice, or his character’s personality (though I like to think he did like coffee), this is still a Pikachu that:
Traveled the world along its partner to find Mewtwo.
Helped his partner sabotage a shady facility to free Mewtwo.
Was so distressed by his partner’s safety that Mewtwo could merge them without Pikachu being infected by the toxins.
Was the one that taught Mewtwo that humans aren’t always bad
Befriended Mewtwo despite being the cause of its capture
Was extremely powerful, casually becoming a legend in the underground battle circles and capable of putting up a fight against Mewtwo himself and maybe even defeat him.
(Regarding the last point, some have pointed out that those machines probably did all the work of capturing Mewtwo after they found him, but it stands to reason that Mewtwo would be far more agressive and prone to fight Pikachu the first time, unlike in the movie where he’s expecting him.)
And sure, most Pokemon would probably do anything for their partner, but it does take an extraordinary pokemon to do all this kind of stuff for a living like it’s nothing.
In short, this Pikachu is actually formidable, and still has a lot to offer if it ever shows up in another movie.
