“Oh my god, is that a carousel?”
Tony stops in the middle of Boston Common, causing Jim to walk into him and almost drop his ice cream cone. He looks at where Tony is pointing, and sure enough, there’s a carousel. Before Jim could answer, Tony grabs his arm and starts dragging him over to the ride.
“Come on!”
They end up riding the carousel six times, Tony insisting they stay on so he can hop on a different seat each time. He’s like a kid discovering something new for the first time, and Jim later finds out that’s exactly the case.
“I was never allowed to go to any fairs or amusement parks,” Tony explains over pizza. “Howard always says I have more important things to do than to play around in a park. I don’t know, I guess that’s the cost of being a child genius. You miss out on a few things growing up.”
Jim narrows his eyes at that. Every time he hears another anecdote about Howard Stark, his urge to punch the man grows stronger. He wipes his hands on a napkin, and with it the unpleasantness of hearing Howard’s name. As Tony changes the topic and starts telling a story about his last run-in with their building’s superintendent, Jim starts brainstorming.
---
For their next long weekend, Jim finishes all his assignments early and drives them almost two hours along the coast to Palace Playland in Maine, a beachfront amusement park and arcade that’s been around since the turn of the century. He came here with his family once a few years ago, when he was a sophomore in high school, and he’s looking forward to sharing the experience with Tony. He watches as Tony shuts the car door and takes in the sight before him, eyes wide and bright and entire body twitching with barely contained excitement.
He gets them both tickets and returns to where Tony is standing near the entrance, studying a map of the park.
“So, where do you want to start?” he asks.
Tony points to the pirate ship. “There! We’re going to try all the rides first, and then the arcade.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
Tony grabs Jim’s hand, ushers them through the entrance, and runs towards the pirate ship where a line is just starting to form.
---
Four hours, two corn dogs, three funnel cakes, and one snow cone later, they’re finally ready to head into the arcade.
They step through into the 20,000 square foot space where all the games are located and Tony pauses, taking it all in.
“Holy shit.”
His eyes land on the giant prize counter that lines one wall of the room, then he turns back to Jim. “We can win those? By playing games?”
“Yup.”
“Well then what are we waiting for? Rhodey! I want that giant stuffed platypus. I need it. Show me how good you are at skeeball and get me that platypus!”
Turns out, Jim is garbage at skeeball. But between the two of them, the sheer amount of options in games they have at the arcade, and the three hours they spend there, they manage to rack up enough tickets for the stuffed toy and more.
At the end of the day, they walk back to where the car is parked, Jim holding the bags of prize candy and knickknacks they’ve won while Tony hugs the stuffed platypus to his chest. The toy is so big that Tony has to angle his head around it to see where they’re going and Jim has to keep a hand on Tony’s elbow to guide the way. Tony bumps into a couple cars before they make it to their own, where he straps the platypus safely into its own seat in the back like it’s his child.
Before Jim could start the car, Tony leans across the centre console and flings his arms around him, squeezing tightly in a hug full of gratitude.
“Best day ever,” Tony says softly. “Thanks for bringing me here, Rhodey.”
“I’m just glad I could make you happy, Tones,” Jim responds, stroking gently between Tony’s shoulder blades.
“You always do.”

For this one, Tony grew up with only ever adults around him. Probably he was tutored/homeschooled instead of going to school. So when he shows up at college and the first person his age he meets (well, as close to his age as he can get when he's in college four years early) is so nice and caring and funny and everything all the adults in his life have never been, he naively assumes that every other person the same age would be. Enter Bain and Stone, proving him painfully wrong. Which only highlights how great Rhodey is. And how much Tony cares about him (hint : it's a lot).

WIP Update - 22 Feb 2023
Back to a more normal writing week -   I touched 9 fics ( 4 WIPs & 5 new works) for a total of  2744 words!
On Ao3, I posted: -- Chapter 2 of Make My Heart Come All Undone   -- surfer(and selkie)!Tony & amputee!Bucky meet cute -- Clothes Make The Man  - a Steve POV CA:WS missing scene drabble -- Tensegrity  - MIT Era TonyRhodey mutual (unresolved) pining ficlet -- The Fist, Defeated - double drabble TFatWS flashback - Isaiah vs the Soldier
On Tumblr I posted: -- Down in the Hole (Some Emotions Are Hard to Hide) - Sam & Bucky mission ficlet with a dose of hurt/comfort -- Flying the Flag of Freedom - Part 2 -  Pirate AU  Captain Rogers & his first mate Bucky encounter a slave ship that might not need rescuing.
I have  12  active WIPs  with my current  deadlines being the February Ficlet Challenge, Bucky Barnes Flash Bingo 2023  and the  Tony Stark Bingo (all ending 28 Feb)
See below cut for what I’m working on/planning to work on - arranged more or less by bingos/challenges/etc.  As always, feel free to send me prompts or plot bunnies as well as asks regarding any of these projects  or any other WIPs I’ve got out there.   Interaction really helps feed the Muse and keep me motivated!
Bucky Barnes Flash Bingo 2023  [BBB_F23] (Ends 28 Feb)
The Bucky Barnes Bingo team (@buckybarnesbingo) is running a flash bingo this month - pick one of 5 premade cards (each with prompts starting from the same letter of his name)  and create some new content to share!
I picked the U card  and I’ve filled all 5 squares!  Just need to get everything onto Ao3 so I can submit my fill forms.
* Ultimatum - used this in combination with the FFC23 Day 9: Soulmate AU prompt along with my Stucky Bingo  Stark Tower prompt  for  The Words Engraved Upon Our Souls  -  a Stucky Soulmate AU ficlet with supportive  (and maybe pining, just a little) Tony.
* Unlucky - Filled this with  Come Again Some Other Day   It’s an introspective piece with Bucky reflecting on how much he hates being rained on that came in at 527 words.
* Undone - Filled this with Chapter 2 of   Make My Heart Come All Undone  - No Powers AU featuring surfer!Tony (with a secret) and  amputee!Bucky.  I got a good start on this thanks to the  FFF23 Day 1 prompt: Wave and have since finished the fic, which is coming in at  2191 words - will probably post the final chapter March  3rd.
* Uniform - filled this with Clothes Make the Man - a drabble  where on the eve of Project Insight, Steve takes on a more personal mission.
* Underdog -  combined this with last week’s Flash Fiction Friday prompt  . [#FFF189 Who Are You]  for a double drabble:  The Fist, Defeated.   The plan is to possibly add on more (possibly present day) to also fill my ACB  Isaiah Bradley square.
Tony Stark Bingo - Round 6  [TSB_R6  (Ends 28 Feb)
22 fills with two bingo so far and three WIPs at the moment -    with Vague Ideas for almost every other square.   I am gunning for a blackout, tho will probably have to pull my Adopted squares in to make that happen.
S5 - James “Rhodey” Rhodes –  a FFC 23 prompt  “This is the last time I bail you out!” combined with my  AvB  Vulnerability square gave me the inspiration to finally write  Tensegrity.   Posted to Tumblr previously and now up on Ao3
* T3 - Pepper Potts/Rescue -   Wrote up a partial remix of sabrecmc’s  Indecent Proposal  from Pepper’s POV after a quick re-read of Chapter 1  -  An Indecent Proposal is coming in at 517 words and will get posted on teh 25th.
* T4 - KINK: Concubine -  this is getting pushed to the next round in order to do the idea justice.   😔
* A1 - AU: Regency -   finally cracked this with an outsider POV (Phil Coulson) of the events of To Tame a Werewolf.  The Steward of Brookline Manor is completed at 707 words, after added to the initial draft posted on Tumblr  to fill Day 13 of the  FFC23 challenge. It will get posted on the 27th.
*A5 - Scott Lang  -  also getting pushed to the next round unless time/inspiration breaks free before the end of the month.   😔
* K2 - Secret Admirer -  carried this over from last round so I could try my hand at a remix of Seeds of Love  (WinterIron hanahaki fic by the super-talented @hddnone).  Wrote two segments of this for  the Flash Fiction Friday and  February Ficlet Challenge events - am re-titling and combining them for Wraps Around My Heart (Refusing To Unwind) - which will either be a one shot or a one-chapter WIP.  It’s coming in at 600-ish words and will post  by the 28th.
February Ficlet Challenge [FFC23]  (Ends 28 Feb 2023)
I’m participating in the @februaryficletchallenge, where two prompts get posted each day.  You’re supposed to write a 200+ word ficlet within 24 hours and share it to the collection -  I’m ending up using these as prompts for longer works to fill bingo squares, but am posting each ficlet to Tumblr as I complete it.
I’ve completed ficlets for the following prompts: (12 of 22 days)
Day 1: Wave;  Day 2: Caught in the Rain, Day 3: “What’s up, Doc?”;  Day 6: Pirate AU  Day 7: Carnival/Amusement Park,  Day 8:  “This is the last time I bail you out!”;  Day 9: Soulmate AU;  Day 10: “Wet your whistle”;  Day 12: Secret Admirer,  Day 13: Vampire and/or werewolf AU;  Day 15: Ice; Day 16: Out to Sea
Stucky Bingo Round Four [SB_R4] (Ends 31 May 2023)
Thirteen fills and one WIP with a couple of other vague ideas.
* B1 - Mutual Pining -  no specific idea, but it’s so On Brand for me I’m sure I’ll come up with something!  (maybe  the Centerfold fic idea I’ve been toying with)
* O2 - Stark Tower -  See BBB Flash  Ultimatum above.
* N1 - AU: Fairytale  - stretching this prompt a little to combine it with the FFC23 Day 15: Ice prompt for a double drabble.   The Captain and the Soldier is vaguely inspired by The Snow Queen (Hans Christian Andersen).
* O4 - AU: Supernatural - got inspired by a dream to start a Stucky fantasy AU (magician!Steve/ensorcelled!Bucky) that @bill-longbow  is collaborating on with me. We’re currently sitting at 1640 words  (984-ish of which are mine).   Will probably continue on this sometime in February/March.   Current Last Line:  "My men will accompany you back to Brookline in the morning.”
I also adopted the Writing Format: Remix one of your fics  square  – am thinking of taking one of my Stony or WinterIron  No Powers fics and adapting it to a Stucky pairing – if you have any requests - hit me up!
WinterIron - No Powers AU  –  Stony No Powers AU
Avengers Bingo Round Four [AvB_R4] (Ends 2 June)
This time around the card is a 3x3,  so am looking at writing different pairings for my two favorite Avengers - Tony and Steve.    I have 2 fills completed and two WIPs, with a couple more ideas in play.
* A1 - Vulnerability - see TSB James “Rhodey Rhodes square above
* B1 - Unrequited Love -  see TSB Secret Admirer square above.
* B3 - Mistaken Identity -  I’m planning a third chapter of my Tony/Rhodey  Western AU   Decision at Sundown   based on the ficlet I wrote to fill the “Wet Your Whistle”  FFC23 prompt.   The expansion will make both this square (and probably the fic itself) more explicit.  😁
* C3 - Dog Tags - seems like a good  Steve/Bucky  (or Steve/Sam?) square.
All Caps Bingo [ACB_R1]  (Ends 30 Sep 2023)
This new bingo focuses on Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson as its main characters - paired up with each other or anyone else!    I’ve got three completed fics, one WIP and two different ideas for the One Fill, One Bingo Challenge - see this Tumblr post for details.
* B2 - AU: Fugitive -  I combined this with the FF23 Pirate AU prompt to write  Flying the Flag of Freedom.   I plan on expanding it to bring Sam aboard (so to speak) but need to do some more research first.
* G1 - Isaiah Bradley -  see BBB Underdog above.
* O1 - “This is payback, isn’t it?” -   combined this with the FFC23 - Day 7: Carnival/Amusement Park prompt for Recollection of Anticipation - Steve  revisiting memories based on Bucky’s comment about the Coney Island roller coaster.   It came in at 541 words and will be posted to Ao3 before this event ends.
* O3 - Pararescue Sam Wilson - may try to squish this into an expansion of  A Rising Star -  a previous Flash Fiction Friday fill.
Sam Wilson Bingo [SWB_R3]  (Ends 15 Oct 2023)
Finally got my square incorporated into my Master Bingo tracking workbook and have one fill.  I have a few squares I want to swap & will probably start tacking this and the All Caps bingo in earnest next month.
G1 - Rescue Mission  -  I combined this with last week’s  @flashfictionfridayofficial prompt [#FFF190 Trapped in the Dark]  to write a Sam & Bucky mission fic  hurt/comfort ficlet:   Down in the Hole (Some Emotions Are Hard to Hide) It came in at  525  words and will get posted to Ao3 sometime next month.
* G3 - Joaquin Torres - possible expansion of  A Rising Star .
————
On other creative fronts:  I have a Launchpad McQuack Stuffed With Character figure in progress -  still working on the figures/props for my three Marvel Trumps Hate  auction winners as well (7 of 8 done so far) – thanks so much for your generous support!!  Finally, I am prepping for a superhero con in March  and another con in June  so am pretty well booked up through spring/early summer.
That said, if you’re looking for one of a kind gifts for birthdays or other celebrations later in the year, check  out Stuffed With Character   over on Facebook for a full list of my designs (now over 100!).   They’re  mostly Marvel and monsters, but I have some Star Wars, Star Trek, DC   and Disney figures as well. Plus I love to take custom design  requests  for any fandom!

Caught at the Inbox
Requested: @gayoccultism
Prompt: TonyRhodey Secret Admirer
Post info: Uhhh, this is super fluffy. Comes in at about 643 words.
A/N: Hope you like it. I think the writing style is a lil’ disjointed, but so are my boys.
--
Tony was tired. It had been approximately sixty-three hours, forty-nine minutes, fifty-six seconds and counting, since he had last slept. It was finals week, and he was getting his ass handed to him.
It wasn’t that the finals were hard, necessarily. He was a genius after all. But they weren’t easy, and the hours were taking a toll on his body. Rhodey liked to point out that Tony had kept himself awake for longer while on an inventing binge, but Tony counters that he’s in a zone then. He was most definitely not in a zone for finals week. And he decided finals would be what finally got him. Not the drinking, or terrible self care habits, or questionable sexual practices. Just good, old-fashioned college finals.
Rhodey would say he’s being dramatic. To that, Tony says “pfffbt”. Which is the sound that occurs when he blows a raspberry.
The only saving grace of his shitty finals season, was his secret admirer. At first, he had thought their dorm was doing a Secret Santa he hadn’t been aware of. It happened last year, and people were very upset with Tony for not participating. But no one else in the dorm was getting gifts. He would know, he asked.
Tony’s last final had ended about thirty minutes earlier, and he had gone straight to his dorm building. The plan was to stop by his inbox to check for a new gift, then head back to his room to Rip Van Winkle.
Walking into the room, he had his head down to look at where he was writing equations so he wouldn’t forget them after his nap. When he looked up, Rhodey was staring at him with a stricken look. For several moments, they were staring at each other in tension filled silence. Then, Tony registered what he was seeing.
Rhodey, his best friend, savior, and long-time crush, was putting a gift in his inbox. The same inbox that his secret admirer left gifts in.
“You weren’t supposed to be back yet. You always go to the lab after your 11:30 class. Why aren’t you in the lab?”
Tony, objectively, would find the situation hilarious if he weren’t so damn confused. Rhodey looked ready to bolt, hand halfway into Tony’s inbox.
“It’s finals week and I wanted a nap. For once in my life, lab time can wait.”
“Of course,” Rhodey murmured under his breath.
“So… you think my eyes are like sun-dappled whiskey?”
A loud groan was the only response Tony got. “Stop. Please. Lord above, this is embarrassing. You weren’t supposed to know it was me.”
While Rhodey looked morosely at the ground, Tony walked up to him and wrapped his best friend in a hug. “I’m glad it was you.”
Tony refused to look at Rhodey’s face while he spoke, pressing his forehead to the taller boy’s shoulder and speaking to his pec. “I’ve had the biggest crush on you since Freshman year. When you pulled me out of a fight with that stupid Senior.”
Rhodey snorted, causing his shoulder to jostle Tony’s head. “Tony, I saved your life. Don’t downplay it.”
“Yeah, yeah. Hush. I totally could have taken that guy who had one hundred pounds and a whole foot and a half on me. Totally could have.”
“I’m sure you could have, you little gremlin,” Rhodey said fondly while stroking the curly brown hair on Tony’s head.
“You know what I definitely could do, though, Platypus?” Tony fingered the fringe of Rhodey’s jacket as he spoke.
“What's that, Squid?”
“Go on a date with you. But only after I sleep for approximately 72,000 years. Now take me to bed, please.”
Chuckling, Rhodey lifted Tony into his arms bridal style and carried him up to their room. Both boys could tell it was going to be a great holiday season.

Warm by your side
little short and sweet rhodeytony fic inspired by the prompts relaxation, candlelight and sweater weather from the rhodeytony seasons of love challenge <3
ao3 link
*****
"This is so stupid - "
"A little higher - "
"Can you hurry up - "
"I’m going as fast as I can!"
"Not fast enough! I’m freezing my ass off here."
"Give me more light - to the left, little more - "
"It shouldn’t be this difficult to look through a wardrobe - ''
"Well, honeybear, it wouldn’t be if you’d hold the stupid candle higher - "
"I swear to god - "
Tony curses loudly and the vague shape of his silhouette disappears out of Rhodey's sight for a moment, only for his face to reappear an inch in front of the candle in Rhodey’s hand, the only visible thing in the otherwise pitch black room.
Rhodey jumps and lets out an aggravated sigh. "Seriously, Tones - "
Tony makes a shushing sound. "I’ve got a question for you."
"Do you now."
"A very serious question."
"...Okay?"
"You wanna be Han Solo or Princess Leia?"
Rhodey blinks. "What?"
"Sorry, my bad, General Leia." Something green catches in the dim light as Tony holds it up briefly. "This is Return of the Jedi era, so no cinnamon bun hair, though I guess we could mix it up a little if you really felt like it.’’
"Tony," Rhodey says, feeling his sanity rapidly starting to unravel, "what the hell are you talking about?"
In the candlelight, Tony’s eyes grow wide with faux innocence and his mouth morphs into a very sheepish grin. "So, you remember how it was my turn to do the laundry."
"Yeah…"
"Aaand you remember how you kept telling me all last week to get it done ‘cause you were running out of sweaters and had to wear that hideous pink one your Gram sent you last Christmas - "
"If you’re about to tell me we don’t have any clothes to wear - "
"In my defence!" Tony shouts, his breath rushing against the flame and causing it to flicker. "I did put it all in to wash...an hour ago."
"Right before the blackout," Rhodey says, exasperation already clear in his voice. "So what you’re actually telling me is that all we have to wear tonight are the clothes we’re in now," he plucks at the rain soaked and pretty funky smelling gym shirt he’s wearing, "or the costumes we never wore for Halloween last year?"
"Hey, I wanted to wear them. Not my fault you went and got the flu." Tony flashes a cheeky grin. "We could always huddle together for warmth, share some blankets, turn up the body heat - "
"If you think you’re getting so much as a kiss from me tonight, you can keep on dreaming," Rhodey grumbles with a shiver. "Gimme a costume and help me find some more candles."
Ten minutes later, after much stumbling and crashing about, the apartment is bathed in the burnt orange glow of a handful of candles, all varying in sizes and all in danger of running out soon, and Rhodey is huddled on the couch beneath his comforter, glaring reproachfully at the black television screen. Outside, rain hammers on the windows hard enough to make them rattle, the whistle of the wind faint but strong.
Rhodey thinks of all his clothes, which isn’t that many because he’s never been one for owning more than what he needs, clumped together in a sodden mess in one of the crappy washers downstairs, trapped and useless until who knows when, and sighs forlornly.
All he’d wanted was a quiet, relaxing evening with a pizza or some chinese food, watch a movie and fall asleep with Tony snoring on his chest if he could get the guy to sit still long enough. It was something he’d been looking forward to all week, the drag of each day bearable because he knew there would be a very good reward at the end.
And now here he is, sat in the dark, shivering and fed up and dressed like Han Solo.
''Hey, flyboy.''
Rhodey twists his head to look over at where Tony stands by the far end of the couch, illuminated by the candlelight with his arms folded and hip cocked, a playful smirk dancing amongst the shadowy image of his face. The forest green poncho he’s wearing is a little too big, baggy and loose all over, but it’s tucked in slightly to the belt holding up his slim grey trousers, the ones that would be declared indecent if he was to wear them out in public because of how ridiculously tight they are, and there’s a helmet sat at a jaunty angle on his damp curls.
"I’m on the lookout for a scruffy looking nerf-herder, or perhaps a scoundrel, I’m not picky." Tony raises an eyebrow. "Know any?"
Rhodey glances down at his own outfit. It’s not as much of a statement as Tony’s, especially as he’d refused to wear the blaster holster or the leather boots in favour of his ratty slippers that have holes in the toes, but it’s still recognisable enough. Not that he’s in the mood for any of this on account of being tired and cold and extremely fed up.
Tony seems to sense this and slides onto the couch. "I happen to like nice men too."
The eyebrow waggle that follows makes the helmet tip a little more sideways and Rhodey can’t help but laugh, some of the tension and frustration slipping away. Tony shuffles over so their thighs are pressing together, the grin on his face growing extremely smug.
"Hard to resist, huh?"
"Oh, sure, who can resist a poncho. Sexiest things imaginable."
"It’s about who’s wearing the poncho, sourpatch. And I know I’m no Carrie Fisher but…" Tony waves a hand at himself and gives Rhodey an exaggerated wink.
Rhodey feels the fight flicker out inside him; the irritation rippling into something far warmer.
"Never been much into Carrie Fisher," he says, immediately earning a pout. "She’s cute and all, but Luke wears it better."
Tony blinks curiously. "Mark Hamill? Really?"
"He’s small and dorky like you, why not," Rhodey shrugs, grinning as he weaves a hand into Tony’s poncho and pulls him a little closer. "We can’t all fancy Harrison Ford, you know."
"Or Chewbacca."
"Weirdo," Rhodey snorts, pressing his lips to Tony’s just in time to cut off the start of a terrible Wookiee impression.

IronHusbands 34:
Related to this.
After the first time Tony visited Rhodey's family, he starts making excuses to not go, faking sick, feigning work, hiding in the lab, all of that. Rhodey lets him get away with it a couple of times but ends up confronting him, asking why, does he not like Rhodey's family, Rhodey thought the visit had gone well, is there a problem, etc etc.
Tony, of course, lies and avoids and keeps refusing to answer the questions. It gets so bad Rhodey goes to sleep on a buddy's couch for a few days.
Anyway, at the end, Tony admits that he just doesn't know how to act and react when Rhodey's family is so nice to him, all warm and welcoming and asking about him and showing him around, all that. And so they go every other weekend to work up to staying there a full winter break.

four weddings and a funeral
this is very very fluffy, and then very angsty you have been forewarned
--
@theavengays Stars, this is for you
--
1.
The first place they get married is Amsterdam.
Tony shows up in a three piece suit to Edwards, and finagles with Rhodey's superiors until he gets extremely annoyed and simply says "If you don't give Private Rhodes leave, I won't give you anything"
Things go pretty smoothly after that, and Rhodey is on the jet within the hour. Tony crowds him into the sofa, straddling his waist and whispers, "Lighten up sour patch we're getting married," before nipping at his neck
Rhodey's so surprised that he forgets to be mad about Tony using his considerable leverage and tugs on Tony's chin until he's facing Rhodey completely
"Say that again," he says softly; not letting up his hold until Tony sighs and starts talking
"Netherlands legalised same sex marriage yesterday. We're getting married sour patch"
Rhodey moves his hands until they're intertwined in Tony's hair; tugging softly and leaning up to capture his lips once, twice, a thousand times because they're getting married
Tony's still laughing as he spreads him out against the couch, to keyed up to shift them to the bed, but he looks up at Rhodey with such unabashed fondness that Rhodey doesn't even try to shut up- just focuses on turning his laughs into gasps and moans
Later, when they're curled up in each other- limbs entangled; Rhodey moves his chin from where its resting on Tony's head and says "that's a horrible way to propose, I want a re-do"
Tony turns to him, eyes bright and replies, "What makes you think this is your first wedding?"
and Rhodey laughs until he gets a stitch; and spends the rest of the journey showing Tony just how much he loves him
--
2.
When news reaches Iraq that Massachusetts is the first state to legalise gay marriage, Rhodey cashes in all his pending leave and gets 10 days off.
When he touches down in Logan, Tony is already there- and the jet is covered in heart shaped decoratives.
"You realise that we aren't flying anywhere right? We can't fly around Boston and rappel down in MIT, we're going to normal way; by bus"
Predictably, Tony shudders against him; and turns to Rhodey with his lip jutting out "Please don't subject my derriere to public transport, I'm too rich for this"
He nips at the offending lip and whispers, "Don't worry- you can sit on my lap"
They pull it off splendidly, a bit of slurring and swaying and everyone is convinced that Tony is just drunk and overly physical- instead of sober and just affectionate with his husband
They get married at the chapel just outside MIT, and the pastor knows them well enough that Tony doesn't even have to buy his silence
Rhodey allows himself 10 minutes of close contact with his husband before they keep careful distance; just because Massachusetts has legalised it doesn't mean DADT isn't still in effect
The distance lasts until they make it to the penthouse suite, and Rhodey slams Tony up against the door; latching onto his neck immediately and rubbing the back of his palm against his hardening dick
"Happy honeymoon husband," he breathes against his skin before dropping to his knees, and Tony just moans in response
--
3.
The day DADT gets repealed, Rhodey goes up to General Macweather and says, “I’m gay.”
To his credit, General Macweather just blinks and says, “so you’ve been fucking that Stark boy?”
Rhodey bites down all cutting responses and nods once, “Sir as I understand it, its pretty normal to fuck your husband”
General Macweather just raises a single eyebrow, and Rhodey is genuinely terrified that the general can hear his heart pounding
“I assume you’re here to ask for leave,”he says finally; and Rhodey just about holds in a sigh of relief
“Sir yes sir,” he says and spreads his legs slightly so he’s standing in parade rest
“You get 7 days off at the end of the month,” General Macweather says, “but if, and only if you hold off telling your squadron for another week.”
“Sir?” this time Rhodey doesn’t keep the bite out of his voice
“Pipe down Lt, there’s been a poll going around the base ever since Washington started making noise about Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and I stand to lose a good 3k if you come out this week”
“You’ve,” Rhodey’s throat is dry, “you’ve been betting on my sexuality Sir?”
“The whole damn world knows you’re gay Lt Rhodes, you only got to spend 5 minutes around you and that Stark boy to know he’s got you wrapped around his pinky finger”
“Now keep your trap shut and don’t cost me three thousand, and you can leave at the end of the month to go marry him all over again”
There’s a brief second before he’s dismissed, but Rhodey can feel the weight of their secret pulling him down every second he’s not near Tony. There’s this newfound urgency now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell has been repealed, this newfound desperation to let the world know that Tony is his
He touches down in New York, where Tony has temporarily relocated so that he can fulfill his desire to build a massive Tower and fuck up the Manhattan skyline forever, and he doesn’t even think; he gathers Tony in his arms- wrapping Tony’s legs around his waist and slants his head up to kiss him
He’s barely aware of the cameras and the media and the insane amount of coverage this must be getting; too caught up in the feeling of Tony against him, pressing smiles on his lips
“Lets get married,” he whispers, setting Tony down and pressing their foreheads together, “lets have a huge crazy society wedding; marry me again Tony Stark”
and Tony kisses him and says, “Always”

4.
After Carol brings him back from Space, Rhodey can’t seem to leave Tony’s side. He’s been through the routine of losing Tony so many times that its almost an old trick, but Rhodey couldn’t stop thinking of all the nights he’d had to wake Tony up because of this very nightmare and there was some finality to it that terrified him
He uses any excuse to touch Tony, to hold his hand, to balance him by placing his palm on the small of his back, to curl his arms around him on the couch; until one day Tony snaps
“I’m not a fragile doll!” he yells and Rhodey’s arms are stretched out in an aborted motion to hold him that Tony’s slipped out of, “so you need to stop treating me like one”
They stay like that for several seconds, Rhodey on the couch with his arms outstretched, and Tony, standing, with his arms crossed against his chest in defiance
“I can’t - ” Rhodey wets his lips, “The six months you were in Space were the most terrifying six months of my life. I need to touch you, to remind myself that you’re still here”
Tony’s gaze softens, and he comes closer to press a delicate kiss on the corner of Rhodey’s mouth
“You know,” Tony murmers, “its been about 20 years since our first wedding? What do you say we go full camp and have a vows renewal ceremony?”
**
Its a small affair, and Tony debates whether or not to call who’s left of the Avengers; but he’s not seen Steve since he collapsed in front of him in a fit of rage; and his wedding didn’t really seem like the time to rehash all that
They call Happy and Pepper, and Pepper’s eccentric uncle Morgan because Tony absolutely adores him; and the whole thing is over in 30 minutes
They kiss and everybody throws flowers, and if Rhodey turns away to hide his tears in the crook of Tony’s neck; nobody says a thing
They’re lounging in the backyard, neck-ties pulled off and sleeves rolled up- lazily exchanging kisses when a black sedan pulls up
Steve and Natasha step out, and Tony tenses against Rhodey
They’re with Scott Lang, who everybody assumed had died in the Snap, but somehow survived and now has this crazy time travel idea
“Wait wait wait,” Rhodey says, looking up at Scott from where he’s sitting, “Are you telling me that your idea of time travel is based on Back to the Future?”
Scott nods, and Tony doesn’t even try to suppress an eye roll
“The answer’s no Cap, I’m sorry”
Steve sighs, “Tony I get it, and I’m happy for you, I really am. But this is a second chance?”
Tony looks up from where he’s curled against Rhodey’s chest, “I got my second chance right here Cap, can’t roll the dice on it”
Later, after they’ve left, Rhodey turns slightly and says, “It would be nice if your spiderkid were here for the next one”
“The next what sugarplum?”
“The next wedding. We’ve had about 4 now and we’ve never really had everyone attend. It’d be nice, get the whole family together; really celebrate us”
Tony just hums, “maybe for our 25th anniversary. We’ll get Pepper go wild”
--
+1
They never have a fifth wedding
They never reach their 25th anniversary
There’s a thrum of power that surges through the battlefield, and the aliens froth and blend into the sky, dispersed into the wind; and even before he turns Rhodey knows what’s happened
He knows as he pushes the boots off the ground, soaring across the battlefield, looking; until he sees Tony- sagged against a boulder
He’s bleeding from his temple, half his body is charred, and there, clasped in his right hand; is the infinity gauntlet- frozen in a snap
He sets down lightly, flipping up the faceplate and bending down so he’s at eye-level
Tony’s eyes flail for a couple of seconds, glassy and unfocused until they zero in on him
General Macweather had once told him, Son, the battlefield is no place for tears, so Rhodey just smiles, cups Tony’s face as best he can and says “Its okay, you did good Tones”
Tony’s lips move ever so slightly, and his voice is barely a whisper, “love you,”
and Rhodey watches as the lights fade out of his eyes, and his chest rises and falls for the last time, and his head lols back
Rhodey watches, as his husband dies; and only once Tony’s body collapses within itself- falling against Rhodey; does Rhodey let himself cry
All around him, the men and women Rhodey has fought alongside, kneel
They kneel for their saviour, for the man who sacrificed everything
but Rhodey just cries, clutching onto his limp husband’s body like it will somehow bring him back to life

cloud gazing
For @starksnack | Rhodey/Tony | mit era (but more modern?), slightly-underage drinking, first kiss, fluff and angst, obvious and painful pinning, open ending/no ending (unless ya’ll encourage me to continue the fic, of course👀)
•••
“That one looks like a cat.”
Rhodey looks up to where Tony's pointing and hums, squinting his eyes to try to catch the form, “Yeah, it does. A soft, fluffy cat.”
Beside him Tony agrees, his brown eyes analyzing the sky with rapt attention before he breaks into laughter, startling Rhodey, who can't help but grin at the guy, “Why are you laughing?”
“That one looks like a dick,” Tony says in between laughs, pointing at one of the many clouds floating in the beautiful blue sky spread above them.
Rhodey wants to roll his eyes, but Tony is right,  that cloud does look like a dick, and Rhodey joins Tony in his laughing fit, his whole body shaking with it. God, this feels so good, so freeing. They've been here for three hours, drinking and laughing at clouds with weird and funny shapes. He can feel his shirt sticking to his back, damped by the grass underneath him, wet after the campus left the sprinklers on all night. But he doesn't care. The end of the year is near, and summer break is closer than it feels.
Tony is laying beside him, a stupid smile on his stupid face. God, Rhodey wants to kick him, but he feels too good, and he knows that if he kicks him, Tony will kick back and they will end up wrestling on the grass while drunk off their asses, which wouldn't turn out okay for neither of them. Plus the possibility of Tony ending under him is way too high and way too tempting. So yeah. He will not kick Tony.
“Remind me again why we're drinking,” Rhodey mumbles, letting the bottle fall from his hands and spill it's contents onto the grass. Huh. Maybe the grass likes beer too. He would be doing it a favor, probably. Who knew?
Tony shifts beside him, propping himself up on his right arm and looking at him with that manic look of his that shouldn't be cute, yet it completely is, and makes Rhodey's heart all soft and mushy, “We're drinking, Rhodey-bear, because we got an A on our final project, and we deserve to celebrate!”
He raises an eyebrow at Tony, “It's ten in the morning.”
“And yet, here we are."
Rhodey does roll his eyes this time.
“Hey, hey now,” Tony pouts at him, cradling Rhodey’s face with his free hand. “Don't roll your pretty eyes at me, you make my knees weak, what if I fall and die?”
“You're lying on the grass.”
“That wouldn't stop me.”
"Fuck, you're right."
Rhodey shakes his head, pulling away from Tony's hand and rolling to the side. He closes his eyes, and shivers when he feels Tony cuddling up to him, the warmth making something coil at the bottom of his stomach. They stay like that for a few minutes, until Tony makes an annoyed sound and rolls Rhodey onto his back, so they're face to face.
Tony is pouting at him, and he should look absolutely ridiculous - okay, he actually does - but Rhodey's pretty sure he feels his heart swell in his chest at the sight. He ruffles Tony's hair, his pout becoming more pronounced, and then Rhodey starts to worry. Maybe Tony’s got a headache now, is hungry just like Rhodey is, or is finally annoyed with his own shirt sticking to his back. Rhodey opens his mouth to ask what's wrong, but no words come out, swallowed by Tony's own mouth as he presses their lips together.
Rhodey is startled enough to forget about kissing back, but then his brain caughts up, and he feels like he wants to cry for two very different reasons; first, he's been waiting for this kiss for a long time, but, second, they're drunk, so that automatically invalidates the kiss.
Tony breaks the kiss and shyly smiles at him, his eyes wide and delighted, and then passes out. Rhodey is startled once again, and sighs at the sight of his best friend curled up in the grass, using one of Rhodey’s legs as a pillow.
•••
Rhodey spends the rest of the week stressed with other projects and finals, not having much time to spend with Tony. He can’t stop thinking about it; about the press of Tony’s lips against his, about the shy beautiful smile he gave Rhodey after kissing him, about the flutter in his stomach and the hope slowly and steadily growing in his heart. It feels like ever since that morning, the universe has tried to keep them apart. It hurts, to say the least. He wants to know what that kiss meant. Does Tony feel the same as him? Or was the kiss driven by the alcohol they drank moments before it happened?
It’s...nerve wracking, if he’s being honest with himself.
A week and a half after the kiss, and two days away from graduation, Rhodey finally spots Tony. He looks well rested from far away, he has sunglasses on, and an arm around a girl’s waist. Rhodey thinks nothing of it while he makes his way towards him. It's been a while since the last time he and Tony have coincided during the day, since Tony has been working away, probably in the lab. And Rhodey couldn’t afford to use his studying time going looking for him, even as much as he wanted.
He’s almost there, hoping that maybe he can ask Tony for lunch today and catch up. But the moment he’s less than five feet away, Tony turns his head to press a kiss to the girl’s mouth, and Rhodey feels the ground give under him. He stops, standing behind Tony, who hasn’t noticed him since he’s talking amicably to the other students hanging out with them. And he’s grateful that at least Tony isn't around, because he’s almost sure that all his emotions are splayed on his face.
He starts to turn away and make his way back, but not before the girl that’s sitting in front of Tony looks up, her brown eyes meeting Rhodey’s face as her own downs in realization. She smiles with sympathy, and Rhodey runs all the way back to his dorm.
He’s sitting in his bed, his heart beating wildly in his chest, when realization dawns on him like a bucket of cold water.
The kiss meant nothing to Tony.

"Love at second sight"
As IronHusbands, for the prompts!
TW Mention of substance abuse
When Tony Stark first saw James Rhodes, fresh faced with not a lick of scruff at fifteen and a stolen drink in hand as faceless people spoke to him about nothing important, he didn’t dare look away.
When James Rhodes first saw Tony Stark, under terribly dim lighting of a party and in a tailored outfit that was a stark contrast to his own terribly faded science joke shirt, he couldn’t look away.
Tones saw Rhodey, Rhodey saw Tones, and there wasn’t a moment during MIT where they looked away from each other, not really.
Rhodey kept his gaze on Tony, kept his focus on the younger as they sketches a million unused blueprints, as Tony seemed to look everywhere else for praise and desire, as Tony avoided sleep for days on end on a caffeine high.
Tony let his eyes follow Rhodey, let the constant distraction orbit around his brain as he admired the shiny stars in Rhodey’s eyes when he aced test after test, as he stumbled in smelling too much like his dad after a party but simply caressed his head and let the younger get him into bed. He let his own eyes sparkle like passing comets when Rhodey praised his work, when he treated Dum-E like more than a robot.
“You know, that boy is always staring at you, Jimmy baby.” Mama Rhodes would muse when Rhodey would bring Tony to thanksgiving, and Rhodey would always laugh.
“Tones is always trying to guess my next move, I like to stay unpredictable.”
“You’re plenty predictable, sweetheart. It came with a healthy dosage of stubbornness.” His Mama would pinch his cheek and shoo him off and Rhodey would forget his own excuses.
Then one day, they’re both forced to look away. Rhodey can’t look at Tony when he’s raging, when he’s breaking his beautiful creations like they’re offending him, when he’s screaming himself hoarse.
Tony can’t look at anyone. He can’t see anything but grief and pain and anger. He drowns his vision in booze and drugs and shades the outside world with a pair of sunglasses so he can’t see them and they can’t see him.
Rhodey tries to step back into view, to catch his eye, but Tony simply blocks him.
So Rhodey leaves. He has a life, he has promise, and he refuses to be undermined or forgotten as he climbs the ranks.
It’s almost a year later when his phone rings.
“This is James Rhodes. Who is this?” The number is unknown but he feels it in his gut.
“Rhodey. It’s uh… it’s Tony.”
“What a surprise. Didn’t you block my number? And you know, just, kicked me aside in general?” He doesn’t want to sound petty, or even angry, but he is. Or maybe he isn’t. Maybe he’s just tired. He feels tired talking to Tony, hearing his voice. He feels heavy with exhaustion and longing.
“Uh, yeah. Sorry. Shit.” Tony sounds on the verge of crying, but it’s different from the crack in his voice when he lost his parents. “Rhodey, I’m sorry. I’ve been a dick. Am a dick. I just — can you do me a favour?”
“You’re asking a lot, all things considered.” Rhodey intones.
“It’s… Hanukkah.” Tony sighed. “Spend it with me? Please. I can’t — it’ll be the first without them, and I can’t, Rhodey, I can’t—“
“Okay.” Rhodey cuts him off before he can blabber.
“Okay?”
“I’ll be there.” Rhodey doesn’t lie. He takes leave and he comes to Tony’s front door with a simple suitcase. When Tony sees him again, doe brown eyes unveiled from his usual frames, Rhodey feels like he’s being seen for the first time by Tony since Howard and Maria’s death.
Tony’s eyes fill with tears and he wraps he arms around Rhodey like he might disappear, but it’s warm and Rhodey has been cold for too long. Both of them have been.
When Tony steps back and feels Rhodey’s eyes, his entire chest blooms with hope and warmth and it’s melting away the walls so quickly it should be terrifying.
“I’ve missed you, Rhodey.”
“I can tell, crybaby. You light a candle for me yet, Tones?” Rhodey says instead but it’s filled with fondness that sets Tony’s anxieties at ease.
“Not a single one. You know I can’t be trusted with fire, platypus.” Tony grins and it’s infectious.
“I’ll supervise.”
They light the first candle of the menorah together and it’s like the spark of something new between them.
It’s the same routine. They celebrate and they laugh like old times, and Tony only drinks a Rhodey measured amount as they watch sci-fi films — critiquing them violently and practically yelling on top of each other to get their points across before bursting into laughter over movie science — and build a volatile machine that explodes paint and dust when Dum-E gets involved. They spend a good hour chasing the bot in order to clean him off.
It’s sweet and warm like s’mores and they can’t keep their eyes off one another. On the final night of Hanukkah, Rhodey asks him to come home for Christmas the coming week with his family.
It’s sitting on the porch of his childhood home with Tony that he realises.
“You know, Mama always said you liked fo stare at me.”
“What? That’s absurd. I don’t stare.” Tony grumbled.
“But you do watch me. I always figured you were trying to stay one step ahead like the genius you are.” It’s a curious statement, branching out into an almost question, and Tony bites.
“You’re predictable, honey bear. I don’t have to be a genius to stay one step ahead.” Tony snorted.
“So why do you watch me then, huh?” Rhodey grins, turning to look at his best friend.
“I… I didn’t get to for a long time. I kind of— I messed up after my parents died. I wasn’t the best to you, never really have been. Probably never will be.” Tony shrugged weakly.
“You didn’t handle it well. You self destructed. And, yeah, it hurt. To see you like that, and also to know I couldn’t really help.” Rhodey sighed. “You stopped looking at me. I think that was the worst part.”
“I stopped…looking at you?” Tony took a moment to digest his words before huffing a laugh. “I stopped looking at you. I stopped looking at everyone. And I forced you to stop looking me in turn, didn’t I?”
“Sure did.”
“I’m so stupid.” Tony smiled even as he spoke, bittersweet.
“I think it was for the best though.”
“Yeah?” Tony turned his gaze onto Rhodey and admired the soft porch light highlighting his defined cheeks and broad nose.
“Yeah. Never would have gotten to see you in a different light if I hadn’t… looked away. I needed a double take.” Rhodey’s deep brown eyes met Tony’s and his grin grew. “Love at first sight — it’s kind of overrated, huh?”
“Lo…” The tiny creases in Tony’s face smoothed with realisation. “Love at second sight? That’s not how it’s supposed to go, honey bear.” Amusement made his eyes shower with comets and Rhodey laughed, his own glistening with stars as he leant in and pressed a gentle kiss to Tony’s lips.
Tony found he was fine with being distracted by Rhodey, and would be fine with it forever, honestly.
Rhodey had a simpler desire. He just never wanted to look away from Tony again.
