a/n: two fics in one day? WHO AMMMM IIIII!!!!!! but anyway, here's yet some more angst for y'all to enjoy, but don't worry, the smut is coming🤭, I'm just in my messy era rn!

Not a sound could be heard coming from apartment 11B. Even with heightened hearing and senses, all Shuri could catch was the distant sounds from outside. This was odd to the panther, who checked her beads for the fifth time since arriving at the complex. It showed the second pair in the apartment, but that they weren't being worn. While this was normal for Riri, to take them off and leave them around the house as she went about her business. However, the lack of music, laughter or conversation - or cursing - wasn't. Feeling familiar panic rise in her, she took a deep breath before opening the door and stepping in silently. She scanned the room for anything out the ordinary, only to find things almost exactly as she left them.

After checking every inch of the apartment and balcony top to bottom (admittedly, even places she knew were ridiculous like cabinets under the sink), Shuri pulled out the phone the smaller scientist forced her to get and checked her notifications. Seeing nothing, she shamelessly types in Riri's instagram handle to see if she's posted anything. To her surprise, once again, Riri has two stories up. Out. Of. The. Ordinary. Riri never posts on social media, sans sharing an event flyer for a cousin back home, or a protest when they pop up. She certainly never posts herself. Most people who have never met Riri in person wouldn't know what she looks like.

One photo of her nails, done freshly in a deep red to black ombré, contrasted against her moisturized skin as she sits in a car. The second slide, of her and her friend MJ dancing at one of the local clubs Riri always says she hates makes Shuri choke on nothing but the air in her mouth that she didn't realize was slightly open.

Shuri set her phone down and paced around the "shared" apartment trying to bring her blood pressure down. She noticed how little of herself was there, how it didn't really feel as shared as she would like. Of course, she bought it so Riri could live there but the younger scientist made her promise that it was "theirs", not hers alone. Shuri agreed so Riri would stay there, and honestly she was happy to have a place to be. And happy to share anything with Riri. But she had to be honest with herself about how little time they'd been spending together since Shuri has had more work on her plate. Sure, they're just friends but it didn't always feel that way. At least not to Shuri, and she hoped to Bast not to Riri.

She continued pacing and decided she should text Riri - but that caused it's own anxiety. What should she say? Should she text her at all? Did Riri want to be bothered? One thing Shuri could almost always rely on were her instincts and intuition and she felt discord between them, even just sitting in the air in the empty apartment. She had felt it the past few times she'd been "home", but tried to ignore it since Riri seemed to be. But now, it was too far out of the ordinary to ignore any further. She pulled her phone out and typed and retyped about a thousand times.

She finally decided, after taking four shots of whatever dark disgusting liquid Riri had in the cabinet and pacing for another 10 minutes, to just address the beads. She wanted to sound concerned but she wasn't sure if that's how it came off.

Regardless of how she sounded herself, Riri made herself clear.

At the club, Riri was four shots deep of something dark herself. She hated this place, all the people touching her and the lights and music were so over stimulating but she had committed herself (and to MJ) to at least try to have a good time. Good being subjective, since she wasn't having anything near the type of time MJ seemed to be.

She walked around the bar after ordering two more shots, both for her but she pretended they weren't until the bartender walked away. She headed back to the dance floor reluctantly to find her friend who was dancing with any girl who wanted to and a few guys who didn't do too much. Riri respected it, everyone deserves to have fun but MJ had been particularly down about some breakup she wouldn't explain. Riri understood that too, being that she couldn't exactly explain why she was heartbroken either, given that she was never in a relationship to begin with.

She found MJ and was pulled into the mix immediately. She resisted it for a bit, but finally feeling the effects of her 6 shots, she started to question why. Why shouldn't she try to have fun? What was she hiding from? Sure, almost everyone around her was an idiot and sure, they'd be hung over the next day, and sure she was heart broken and didn't know how to fix it. But so what. She was young, she was tired of being sad about something - someone, who didn't seem to notice. And she wanted to feel better. So she let herself dance. She let herself shed the chip off her shoulder and she laughed with her very fun, very drunk best friend.

Until her phone buzzed. She was surprised she even felt it with all the mess going on around her. She didn't feel like checking it, knowing it was probably her mom sending her Facebook reels or her sister sending her tiktoks. She would get back to them later. She ignored it until it chimed again, which she found to be a very annoying feature from apple. So she pulled it out to turn on DND until she saw who it was. She groaned out loud, suddenly feeling all the fun fall off of her. MJ noticed and looked down at the shorter woman's phone.

"Sunglasses, really?"

"She put it to be funny." Riri smirked and immediately dropped it from her face, mad that she still thought it was cute.

"What did she say?" MJ asked, genuinely concerned noticing Riri's demeanor change, despite her own drunkness.

"Ion know, I'm probably gonna ignore it."

"Let me reply. You always ignore your problems until they get too heavy to handle."

"Are you tryna therapize me, Jones?"

"Maybe a little. Here, let me see." MJ grabs the phone against Riri's weak protest. She reads it and types, which makes Riri nervous. But MJ was right, she couldn't put the blame all on Shuri when she hasn't addressed her own feelings either.

"I'm going to be a little mean, I think."

"What do you meannnn?!! What did she say?!!!" Riri protested again, trying to grab the phone. MJ laughed at the height difference as all she had to do was lift the phone above her head. Shuri did the same thing often when they'd play around, and Riri hadn't realized she hated it until this very moment.

"Girl relax! I'm not cursing her out, but she needs to know she can't play with you." MJ said as she read the next text Shuri sent and quickly responded. This went on for over a minute, each second stressing Riri more until she decided to just give in. MJ really WAS right on all counts, even if she didn't want to admit it out loud. And why should she care what Shuri has to say anyway? She hadn't been home in days and had barely contacted her. Granted, Shuri doesn't HAVE to tell her anything, but they usually do. She was almost sure she was seeing someone but couldn't prove it. And really, she wasn't sure. Which drove her even more crazy, how delusional she was being. It was out of the ordinary for her, to feel this way about anyone. But she did. And she was mad. And even if she was wrong too, so was Shuri. So she let MJ do what MJ does.

Finally, the taller girl handed her back her phone. Riri took it and read it against her better judgement.

"Oh my godddddddd. She's gonna hate me tomorrow."

"I said what needed to be said, and someone had to say it since you weren't going to. Just because she's literal royalty doesn't mean she gets to play with your feelings. You're important and special too, Ri."

"Oh god. Thank you but please don't do that thing where you get drunk and cry. Pleaseeee." But it was too late, seeing MJ tear up and laugh made her laugh too.

"I won't, I won't! But I mean it. You do deserve better, and so do I! Let's do another shot!" MJ shouted as she ran off towards the bar, pulling Riri behind her.

Riri let it burn down her throat and tried her best to move on with her night. She knew Shuri wouldn't be texting her again, but part of her wishes she would. A big part of her wishes she would say something, or fight for her. Although she wasn't sure if there was anything to fight for. That was the problem between them, they played house and this constant domestic back and forth, but never stepped over the invisible line separating them. And Riri was tired of it.

thoughts after i saw black panther wakanda forever again.

firstly queen ramonda’s muscles in this movie were crazy 😭 i don’t even think i noticed it the first time. all of the women in the dora looked strong as hell and beautiful i’m obsessed. since we’ve introduced ironheart and we’re supposed to be getting a tv show(?) i hope happy and her get involved and it would be hilarious if she becomes friends with peter and mj but mj has no idea who peter is but riri does(and she’s the only one who does).

the fight scenes in this movie are so good, like some of the best in the mcu, there’s less cuts and the use of slowmo especially in scenes with the water makes them so gorgeous.

the black and gold in shuri’s black panther suit represents her brother and tradition and the vengeance of her cousin n’jadaka.

why does m’baku challenge for the thrown? with him in this movie it feels off for him to do it for selfish reasons maybe shuri asked him too.

i know the romance plot was scrapped because of test audiences but to me(this is MY OPINION 😒) the romance would have made their ultimate rift so much weightier. what if they had at the end of her tour simply had namor tell her they were more alike than anyone else he had ever encountered and asked for her hand BEFORE asking her to burn the world or if he asked for her hand in order for the scientist to be returned and she said yes. to then be drawn out of the water and have his people killed so he turns around and kills her mother and the final fight hits so much harder.

shuri not only doesn’t kill him because of his people but because some part of her does love him. this is not me negating the relationship they already have, it’s beautiful whether they ever are romantically involved or not i just think it would enhance the story.

also it’s been bothering me but shuri is not 19 and i keep seeing people say she is. she was 19 before the blip friends 😭 in universe it’s been 6 years since the first black panther.

another thing that bothers me is people fully missing the point of the talokanil as antagonists. yes they are the villains of the movie but they are not. VILLAINS. their goal is the same as the wakandans. to protect their home. over the years this goal has been warped by grief and anger and it’s completely understandable. people who look like them have been enslaved and beaten and killed and the surface countries have made it very clear they desire vibranium to control the world. not to help it. hate him if you want but namor is right. the world will turn on wakanda and the only ally they have is talokan.

The core of this movie and honestly black panther as a series is the way black people and other poc are so focused on hating one another, a hatred that was taught to divide us when killmonger, and t’challa, and namor, and shuri, are not enemies. they are victims namor and killmonger understood that better than t’challa and shuri because they’d seen first hand how the world treats people who look like them. Now obviously they could have gone about it another way, a better way but don’t misconstrue that to mean killmonger OR namor were wrong, they weren’t.

i’m very excited about phase 5 moving forward and i can’t wait to see these characters again even though I know it’ll be awhile. shuri will probably be in the next avengers and i have no idea when namor will be back. i hope we get this movie on streaming soon so i can analyze it more closely

What do you think Bucky's pronouns are? What about Natasha's and Steve's? Anyone else? I sometimes think Natasha would use they/she and Bucky might be hesitant to use any other than he/him because he's never thought about it before, but I also think he'd be affirmed by a they.

I'll be honest, I didn't think I had super strong opinions on this but then I started writing this out lmao

So my quick disclaimer here is whenever I write Bucky I write him as a Cis Bisexual man. I've never thought much about his gender identity honestly, but I choose to think that he was into girls but also had feelings for Steve and that takes more importance to me personally (the self indulgent self-insert OC I paired him with is Nonbinary though ((and I'm NB myself)) so it's not like he doesn't know anything about it, just his Bisexuality is what's come up so far in what I've written) but tbh if someone referred to him as "they" I don't think he would correct them. I've also seen a lot of fics where when Bucky is in Winter Soldier mode he thinks of himself as "it", which I do think is really interesting but not something he actively chose. That's not to say it/It's pronouns aren't valid, they ABSOLUTELY are, but in this case I think it would stem more from HYDRA beating into him that he's an object or a machine and not a person rather than any preference on Bucky's part. I do think there's an argument to be made though for Bucky actively choosing to refer to himself using he/it or even he/it/they in his head for those 2 years before CW where he's on the run since he's not really the Winter Soldier and not really Bucky but a super secret third thing that's in between the two.

And some quick drive by ones:

Most of the rest of the Avengers I could see being he/theys and she/theys respectively, or just not caring about pronouns

Steve is the Token Cis Avenger™️ in my mind I can't explain it but he just gives off that vibe imo. He's not het though.

like tbh I don't think Thor cares what pronouns you use for him (1500 years is way too long to be cis). I think Valkyrie is in a similar camp, but prefers She/They.

Yelena strikes me as someone who would be cool with She/They, same with most of the women on the Thunderbolts lineup tbh

I feel like Kate would be She/Her, but if someone used "they" for her she wouldn't stop them y'know?

I don't have many thoughts on the Eternals in general, but Sprite is a She/They nonbinary I will not take criticism on this subject. Tbh I think most of them are He and She/Theys for the same reasoning as Thor, but I think some of them are like what I said for Bucky where like they won't correct you if you use 'they'. Ikaris is their Token CisHet™️

I love the headcanon that Holland!Peter is a transman, and I could see him and MJ being He/They She/They solidarity

The entire lineup of X-Men '97 is made up of He/Theys and She/Theys except for Morph who is canonically(!!) They/them. Jean Grey and Scott are their Token CisHets™️ and are good sports about it. You cannot look at Rogue, Gambit, Jubilee, and Storm's designs specifically and tell me they're cis. Not possible.

Shuri gives She/They energy imo

Carol is a She/They lesbian, is dating Valkyrie, and her marriage to the prince on Aladna is a Lavender Marriage. Fight me.

Stephen is the Token CisHet Avenger™️

Loki and Sylvie both use all pronouns, but prefer he/they/xe and she/xe respectively

The Alien superheroes like Nebula, Gamora, Groot, etc. I feel probably have like semi-complicated relationship with human gender so I feel like they probably don't put to much thought into pronouns

I got ambitious and too longer than l had intended. Having a full-time part-time job and family and friends with health concerns cut into the time l could spend on this, but this is my Avengers couples holloween. Peter and MJ were a last minute addition. It was going to be like they were photo bombing, but it was late and l was tired so l stopped before l messed up something l couldn't fix.
