Microplastic Photos Series by Morten Bentzon
“The plastic consumption worldwide has been increasing at an alarming rate becoming an important source of pollution for our planet. In fact, we all know that our plastic waste ends up in the sea and in nature where it takes decades to degrade. But not everybody is aware that plastic enters our food chain as microplastics.”
Sweat Sneak Studio initiated this project to raise awareness of the ways in which commonly used plastic products such as shopping bags, takeaway boxes and cling film are re-entering the food chain.

Sweet Sneak Studio
The Dutch food design studio teamed up with photographer Morten Bentzon for the series, which features eight different foods that tend to contain microplastics — the sub-five-millimetre pieces that remain after plastic waste degrades.
Sweet Sneak Studio, undertook the project to raise awareness of the ways that commonly used plastics such as grocery bags and cling wrap re-enter the food chain. They also wanted to bust the myth that seafood is the only culprit.
What inspires me about these photographs, is at first glance the objects appear ‘normal,’ however through closer inspection there is more to the objects. The images also have a shocking element to them, which creates an emotive aspect and connects with the viewer. I also like how even though the backgrounds are different colours, the images are still cohesive and relate to one another.

Microplastic Photos Series
by Sweet Sneak Studio for Copenhagen Zoo,
The plastic consumption worldwide has been increasing at an alarming rate becoming an important source of pollution for our planet. Our plastic waste ends up in the sea and in nature where it takes decades to degrade.
Plastic also enters our food chain as microplastics.
Microplastics are small plastic pieces, less than 5 mm long. Because of their tiny size, they can escape water treatment filtration systems and spread out into our oceans and other water bodies.
We consume microplastics not only through seafood, but also through drinking water because of the plastic bottles which have the highest content of microplastics. Scientists have found microplastics in beer, honey and sea salt.
The exact impact of microplastics on our health is not yet clear but we know that plastic is harming nature.
To shine a light on the problem and to create more awareness on the consequences of single-use plastics, Sweet Sneak Studio created this exhibition portraying eight different foods in which scientists found traces of microplastics.
