chapter 1

7:30 am

15th of November

ring ring ring

Rolling over on the couch you reach over to grab your phone. Shutting off your alarm you place your arm over eyes to shield your eyes from the bright sunlight. After a few mins you finally get up and walk down the short hallway to the bathroom. After using the bathroom and brushing your teeth you head to your son's room to wake him up. The room was covered in in MSBY merch. He was wearing a sakusa 15 jersey to bed and it left a smile on your face thinking about the tickets you bought him for his birthday. He had olive hair and (your eye color). He didn't talk much, but when it came to volleyball he couldn't stop talking. It hurt knowing that you prevented him from playing but you did it for his own good. You didn't want him to neglect others because "volleyball came first".

"Isa baby it's time to get up," you said as you walked in to his room. The young boy groaned as you opened the blinds for his window. You grabbed his glasses off his night stand and put them on his face as he yawned. "happy birthday honey. I have a present for you let me go get it." For 10 years now you and Isamu have been alone but content with each other. After highschool you moved away to Tokyo soon after you found out you were pregnant. You couldn't let the father stay he was just gonna be focusing on Volleyball anyway. That's all he did your whole relationship, he even told you. Volleyball comes first then you, i'm sorry. He wasn't sorry. No one even tried to reach out to you after you left, but it's fine you gave birth to the sweetest boy and today he was 10.

Walking back into the room you see he was sitting on his bed waiting for you to come back. Everyday he looked more and more like Ushijima. The stoic face watched you walk in with a small box in your hands. Sitting on his bed you you gently place the box in his lap. Most people wouldn't be able to tell that his emotions changed. He doesn't move his eyebrows much nor his mouth, but you could see his eyes light up at the small gift. You had been saving up to get him a nice gift this year. He slowly took the lid off the present a moved the tissue paper to get inside. He pulled out two white tickets that had said "MSBY Black Jackals VS Schweiden Adlers" for the first time in a long time you saw your son truly happy. Not faking it to make you feel better but truly excited. He started hopping in place on his bed at the tickets.

"thank you mama," he had said as he leaned over to hug you. His happiness suddenly stopped and he looked up at you with worry on your face. "mama these must have been expensive," after he said this you shushed him because you knew exactly where this was going. He was a very smart child, and as amazing as that is it sucks because he's more aware of his surroundings. There was no doubt that sometimes you struggled to make ends meet. Working two jobs, having a son, and you were finished college. I mean you sleep on the couch for God's sake.

"don't worry about that. Everything is okay, and I wanna treat you! Now go get ready the game starts at two"

12:00pm

You hadn't known much about the two volleyball teams playing. Only knowing the players your son talked about. Those being Miya Atsumu and Sakusa Kiyoomi. You remember Sakusa from high-school, and you loved flexing that on your son. Ushijima and Sakusa had been aquatiences in highschool, but you've only ever talked to the curly haired man once. You were getting giddy just thinking about seeing your son's face when he got to get his jersey hand signed by the wing spiker.

You wanted Isamu to enjoy his childhood. He already had to go through a lot. Even though he didn't know who his father was he was very much aware that the man was not in his life. Anytime he brought him up your face would contort not wanting to talk about the man. You would keep who his father was a secret till you were ready, and that definitely wasn't right now. Plus, it was a mistake and Ushijima didn't know. Ushijima took your virginity on his 19th birthday, and it was perfect, but he went back to his volleyball self the moment the two of you woke up the next morning. He was leaving when you woke up, and just said bye and kissed your cheek. When you asked were he was going he said he had practice. No he didn't actually. You guys had graduated and there was no more Shiratorizawa team for him, but he would continue to practice everyday. Never taking a break. Huh, screw him for getting you pregnant after your first time. What are the odds.

"mom are you okay," snapping back into reality you realized the water was still running and you've barely gotten through the dishes. Fuck the water bill is gonna be high.

"yeah yeah im fine, are you ready?" You said beginning to get back to the dishes.

"yeah, i'm really excited because not only is it MSBY but the Adlers too. I can't wait to shove it in Aki's face at school on monday. He loves Ushijima so much," He started chuckling at his evil plan.

"wait Ushijima?" You asked. Please dont be your Ushijima. Please don't your Ushijima. Please, please, please.

"Yeah Ushijima Wakatoshi. He's so cool. If i didn't like Sakusa so much he would be my number 1... mom are you listening?" You felt you breathing start to pick up. It's to late to back out now. You were 29 for god's sake you can face him, but your anxiety wouldn't leave. Not wanted to worry your son on his birthday you tried to hide you anxiety.

"yeah, I just- I think I went to school with him," Isa's face lit up at that.

"really!! Can you introduce me," His smile was wide when he said that. It was rare to see his smile that big, normally just opting for a small smile without showing his teeth...just like his dad.

"maybe yeah, if he remembers me," oh he definitely does. "can you start the car for me while grab my stuff," you hand him the keys trying stop you hand from shaking as hard as it was.

Not too long after that was, people see you wear his jersey to the Schweiden Adlers vs MSBY Black Jackals game and they just go crazy.

In conclusion, every picture of you and Kageyama together always turns out so good?? Like how is that possible? Everyone is genuniely wondering that.

Volleyball is a battle of height, he understands that well. Facing down Kageyama in his final year of middle school, Ushijima in his first year of highschool, and eventually the both of them in the Schweiden Adlers vs MSBY Black Jackals– volleyball is a battle of height, and one he is ill equipped for as he stands at 5’7”.

So he doesn’t fight them on their terms.

A strong run up, with balance honed through his time playing beach volleyball where the ground did not push against you, into a jump that brought him into his domain. A domain where he could fight, and his height didn’t matter anymore because there was no starting point. A jump that brought him into the sky.

That was where he fought this battle of height known as volleyball. So long as he was in the land where he couldn’t stand, the void of empty space where he once stood, he was free. You could burn the land, and boil the sea, but you can’t take the sky from him. After all, crows are territorial.

HAIKYUU MANGA SPOILERS!!

ive got a REAL question regarding the upcoming haikyuu movies:

do you guys think the two movies will be able to complete all of haikyuu???

since the first part is supposedly going be the battle of the garbage dump arc, then that means the second movie would be about the kamomedai match. ending the nationals arc.

but where would the timeskip come into all of this? because there's no way we can just skip hinata's beach training in brazil arc, nor can we skip the MSBY black jackals vs schweiden adlers match. AND we still have the second timeskip with the japan national team vs argentina.

so do you think the timeskip will be animated at all?

i was just thinking about it since it seems like the first part will be solely nekoma due to the trailer, but i could be wrong.

okay but like, the nekoma vs karasuno match isn’t going to be the only game in the next film right? like i do think it should get its own film, but if there’s only two movies, there’s no way the second film can cover literally everything that comes after not the rest of nationals not graduation not brazil and certainly not the msby black jackals vs schweiden adlers game. the second film is just going to be 2 hours of montage to get thru everything who decided this

( thank you @redsharksimp for the excuse to write the little giant. i love him. i think we’d get along; small bodies + big mouths. i’ll also be writing a series with him eventually, noticed he’s not written about often. )

this ace has a talent for doing everything but asking for permission to climb you like a jungle gym. he loves taller surfaces and often lingers around them, hoping you’ll come nearby so he has an excuse to jump up on tables, bleachers and even steps and eventually, onto you.

for someone with such a loud presence, korai can be remarkably covert about his intentions. he’s subtle. the concern that a 5′6″ ace might somehow navigate his way onto your back is the farthest thing from your mind.

hoshiumi practically lives on your back. it’s become so routine that if no one can find him sprinting around the campus, best chances of locating the ace is you; stuck like a koala bear, hiding his features in the curve of your neck. his nose tickles your sensitive skin, when you whine at him to stop nuzzling you, he only proceeds by burying his face into your shoulder, emphasizing your purpose as an impromptu nap spot. on several occasions he’s fallen asleep to the rocking of your strides, his chin propped on your shoulder, making little sounds.

after intense games, this tiny giant is quickly curling around you like he belongs nestled against your spine. at first it was slightly annoying but the behavior that once made you swat him away now had you begging him to climb aboard.

you dropped korai once, it was his own fault. you would have thought you two were strangers with how he evaded you effortlessly. his pride was bruised, glacial orbs staring at drywall when you tried to speak to him. you grew tired of the act quickly and rolled your eyes, “i’ll carry you around the campus if you just talk to me korai-chan.”

“that’s just an excuse to drop me again!” he pouts and crosses his arms.

you pivot on your heel, intentions clear. korai’s brows furrow together, lips pressed together tightly. you’re doing two things simultaneously; ignoring him and tempting him. whether that was your actual intention he’d never know because he’s already chasing after you, hands slithering around your waist, “i’m sorry. don’t go.” you’re exceptionally patient and considerate and korai wouldn’t trade you for the world.

someone on the team once called him a human-backpack and hacked into his social media, changing all his usernames to that clever handle. you had the “human-backpack” putting everyone he knew on blast for three hours after realizing his name was changed. needless to say he was a little passive when it came to getting affection but that didn’t last very long, he missed seeing the world from your shoulders.

you would spend hours with your little piece of sunshine attending practice, watching, recording him, he looks great on camera, very photogenic and those playback spikes? oof

despite all of shoyo’s energy, studying and sleeping became a bit of an issue with some changes in the practice schedule and when you weren’t around to help him fall asleep, he spent the night tossing and turning. you noticed his performance change and not entirely for the better. one night after a routine practice, he stumbles over his backpack and skins his shin. under your orders, he was not to bike home over that ridiculous mountain. He whined about your resistance and eventually slumped over on the floor, at a loss for how to navigate the piling stress upon his shoulders.

it wasn’t out of the ordinary when you offered to give him a piggyback home; your relationship was slowly reaching new territories and that included selfish acts such as this. despite some protest, he eventually gives in.

this is how it all really began. sometimes he would counter your offer and argue that it was unnecessary to do something like this, to voluntarily carry your boyfriend up over a mountain. you tut at him, finger wagging, “even birds have to rest sometime shoyo-kun, even great eagles.” the decoy’s lips part to retaliate but your logic is flawless and your tone kind. shoyo would do anything for you, so he agrees. to placate him further, you added it was also for your own sake to build leg muscle.

shoyo climes on your back and eventually treats the hood of your sweater as nest, nuzzling into the fabric. the walk isn’t long and the rhythm of your long even strides up the pavement lulls him into a drowsy state. the fine coordination between his brain and his mouth dissipates as the future ace gently makes sleepy noises close to your ear. it’s very cute and touching.

to avoid a puddle you shuffle like a crab close to the road, disturbing the faint slumber shoyo eventually fell under. “huh?”

“go back to sleep shoyo, we’re almost there.”

“nah, i can stay awake.”

you shake your head softly, moved by his loyalty and compassion. “alright then sho, tell me what stars you see.”

hinata’s slender arms wrap around your neck, careful not to apply pressure on your throat. “hhhh...that’s….orion…” his voice sounds hesitant, distant as it fades into the night. “right?” you feel your face grow hot as shoyo presses his cheek against your ear, ruffled hair intertwining with yours by the breeze of the wind as you reach the summit of your path. glancing up at the starry ether, a smile weaves into your lips.

“yea, it is. i don’t often see it in the winter but i’m glad i can see it now.”

“you know, after practice i’m usually concentrating on my plays and the dinner i have to eat and everything i need to do to prepare for tomorrow...but with you, y/n.i can enjoy the stars.”

“you’ll reach em too baby.” hinata presses a kiss to your temple and squeezes you with his smaller body.

outside of practices and walking home together, shoyo really enjoys taking pictures of you two in matching outfits with him on your back. you have an entire album of 100+ pictures of you two sporting the same wide smile and sparkly eyed expressions.

hinata loves speed, so of course he’s going to challenge nishinoya to a piggy-back race. your naturally long strides make you good competition against asahi. the only job hinata has is to not fall off.

he still does but never blames you. he’s laughing down at your feet, giggling about how your hair was getting in the way of his sight.

eventually you need a break, it’s not easy carrying around your boyfriend and he has two perfectly functioning legs!

he kisses you all the time and loves to crawl in your lap when he manages to get you to sit down. you’re his favorite spot
