He liked to explore the muggle world when he could.
The way they went through their day, with petty things on their minds, not even knowing magic existed so close to them interested him deeply.
He did not particulary like them.
He only knew one of them personally - his father - and he surely did not like him.
The feeling was mutual.
The day off.

I was mulling over Harry Potter recently and I think one of the reasons it doesn't really appeal that much to me is the worldbuilding is not my cup of tea. In the context we are given wizards and witches are far too powerful to be hiding from Muggle nations. Wizards have the capability to mind control, memory wipe, easily create Muggle-repelling charms over entire locations that confuse and disorientate, as well as have teleportation, portkeys, Floo powder, spatial magic, invisibility, etc. Wizards sharing a planet with Muggles is positively Lovecraftian, like Cthulhu being just next door and closer.
With basic evolutionary patterns, Darwinism, the fact wizards can be disappointingly human and their leanings to fascist elements in their history (so many Anti-Muggle Dark Lords), they'd have wiped Muggles out by the BCE period, or at least not be hiding from them in a way that's the equivalent of the United States hiding from Monaco. It wouldn't take that many wizards, and in the book we are provided no evidence of our Muggle tech being able to withstand something as dynamic, tricky and reality warping as magic.
Power Dynamics
Tumblr media
"They can strike anywhere at any time before anyone knows it."
The power dynamic from what we are shown in the books are very wonky and infinitesimally so unequal one begins to wonder if owls hide from slugs. Perhaps if JK Rowling had depowered wizards more by incorporating clearer weakness and faults in the magic system, such as perhaps no apparition (I mean, they already have portkeys, Floo powder, brooms, greedy wizards), more limits to the mind control like showing Muggles can fight it off, made wards and Muggle-repelling charms more fragile (maybe have that they can only be set up in certain geographical places either choking with magic or idk related to runic stuff and ley lines), as well as perhaps indicate that the average shielding charms can't withstand heavy kinetic onslaught from a heavy duty weapon like an AK-47, etc., it might have felt more understandable why the Muggle World and Wizarding World have the relationship they do.
Because, in the canon, we are given no concrete reasons why the wizarding world chooses to hide other than Muggles being a bother, probably asking for cures to cancer or something. In the canon, we are never presented with any Muggle technology that justifies the Wizarding World being under threat if the Statute of Secrecy breaks. We can speculated, but we can speculate either way depending on our mood. You'd think this would be more defined since the conflict centralises on Wizards and Muggles (including their offspring) existing.
Ethical Concerns For Mugs
Tumblr media
"With this rep, I guess we deserve to be mindwiped whatever our consent."
Regarding certain implications in the books, there are a number of ethical concerns that don't feel they're given the weight and attention they deserve considering the themes. One is the overuse of memory charms, a mental violation which are hinted to cause brain damage. Considering how much wizards obliviate and violate Muggles' minds as well as cover up their deaths, that's practically fridge horror. Wizards, both good and bad, also often subvert Muggle democracy and freedom of information, and are quite authoritarian and devil-may-care about this. The Harry Potter narrative never really fully tackles this or shows any real critiques or changes in regards to the Statute of Secrecy and Muggles.
Considering the over all message of the books is anti-authoritarianism, anti-fascism, freedom and even saying Muggles aren't 'lesser' beings, these actions contradicts the themes and kind of makes all the wizards look pretty morally bankrupt when they continue to do this even after the 17 Years Later epilogue. In all honesty, this actually impacts the characterisation of our protagonists in a way I don't particularly like, especially since Hermione is Minister For Magic for a period of time.
Muggles & It's Just Fantasy
Tumblr media
"Hi boring people we're fighting an entire conflict over, just passing through."
Suspension of disbelief is a tricky thing and so is the way a writer earns it. I think it would be more okay if Harry Potter was a purely separate fantasy world similar to Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones, but the author has Muggle society (aka our 'logical' world) develop the exact same way despite sharing the planet with the logic-breaking magical world since the dawn of time and evolution. With all the factors shown in HP, these powerful, reality-warping wizards would fuck up our history and society so much we Muggles would either be dead or coughing out live elephants every time we ate a salad on a regular basis.
Over all, I feel the Muggles need to be more of a threat and have more going for them to explain why the wizards are hiding from them. Otherwise a wizard could teleport around the land of Muggles and just put Muggle-repelling charms on the British Parliament, all the nation's hospitals, police stations, banks, etc. and just watch the chaos. Okay, next stop, the Nuclear power stations and missile silos. By the Muggle world existing it intrinsically forces reality into a fantasy that doesn't want it.

*Hermione and Ron are in Paris.* Ron: I'm...moved. I...I don't know what it is I'm feeling right now. I feel...destiny? Hermione: But... Ron: I don't know what it is. I feel like... I just never thought I'd see it with my own two eyes. And here it is. It's just there. It's right in front of me, and... Hermione: This is what you wanted to see? The bridge from Inception? Ron: Yeah. Hermione: But the Eiffel Tower is behind us, love. Ron: Yeah, but this is the bridge FROM INCEPTION. This was in a muggle film! It’s THE BRIDGE! Hermione: Okay, alright.

Scenario: After the war, Draco realized he wanted to learn more about the muggle world, a place that was kept from him throughout his life because it was seen as lesser.
But when Draco actually experiences the muggle world, he finds that muggles have learned and discovered more than he could ever imagine.
He decides he wants to open schools for younger witches and wizards (under 11) and older (17+) so younger kids will have a solid grip on basic math, science, history, and language, before they get a magical education and older will be able to understand the muggle world with more specificity. Because how is wizarding society going to push forward out of purist ideals and actually integrate into the rest of the world without understanding it first?
Harry naturally thinks Malfoy is up to something. Shenanigans ensue.

Question; would muggles with magical family be able to see Hogwarts? I know there’s a spell on the castle to make muggles see only a ruin. But if muggle parents of magical children can enter Diagon ally, could they also see Hogwarts? Like a magic loophole.

I sometimes think JKR completely forgot that her readers are all Muggles. At some point, I see young fans re-reading the series and realizing exactly where non-magical humans fit into the Wizarding World. Yes, a lot of people accept (or have made up, since I don't see much canon evidence for it) the excuse that wizards are outnumbered and afraid of the Muggles, but they actually treat them more like animals than potential enemies. Of course, that's also exactly how they treat the other magical beings, even Werewolves who used to be wizards. The question of normal humans' place is never even raised by our heroes (if we can call them that), and, in fact, one of them used magic to cheat on his driving test. If the wizards are hiding their existence because they're afraid of Muggles (which actually doesn't fit very well with the fact that they accept Muggleborn wizards into the wizarding world, necessitating telling some Muggles), then all they're doing is giving Muggles reason to fear, hate, and kill or enslave them as the wizards themselves been doing to other magical creatures. If you look at the series from the point of view of any non-wizard, it's like the tag line for Alien vs. Predator - whoever wins, we lose.

Pureblood Purists Actually Have Valid Concerns
Disclaimers
Before I start my post let me make 2 disclaimers since some people have a tendency to twist words on Tumblr:
Not all blood purists were death eaters. I am not condoning DE terrorism here. I am referring to people who held pureblood beliefs but never fought in a war to oppress people.
Harry Potter is a fictional world. My arguments are not meant to be extended to the real world.
Assumption about Magic
JKR does not specify the origin of magic. Is it like ATLA where it's a spiritual kind of thing and people are blessed by Lady Magic? Or is it a gene thing and wizards are a subspecies of human? For me, I am going to go with magic being a gene thing. If magic was like bending in ATLA then wizards should not be such a tiny minority.
Missed Potential of Umbridge Interrogation Scene
This post was inspired by Book 7, Chapter 13 – The Muggle-born Registration Commission. Specifically, the part where Umbridge is interrogating this poor muggle-borne woman named Mrs Cattermole.
‘Could you please tell us from which witch or wizard you took that wand?’
Umbridge's line of questioning is so ridiculous and JKR missed a golden opportunity to introduce some nuance here. She paints all purebloods who are not blood traitors as evil/bigoted. Just because this is a kid's book it does not mean she has to treat kids like idiots. Instead of painting purebloods as bigoted fools who believe magic can be stolen or sadists making up crack in this sham kangaroo court, she could have used this dialogue to present valid and ignored concerns of purebloods. Instead of crap like this, the Voldemort regime could be jailing purebloods who married muggles or mugglebornes on the count of them diluting their race. Or maybe firing half-bloods and mugglebornes and giving those jobs to purebloods. These actions are still wrong but at least they would be rational and add some depth. And purebloods have serious cause for concern. Let me point out 5.
Concern 1 - Existence of Squibs
In the books, we don't know the blood status of the parents of prominent squibs like Filch. But I bet the likelihood of your kid being a squib increases dramatically if one of the parents is muggleborne.
It makes sense to me that mugglebornes could be descendants of squibs. Making mugglebornes basically muggles who won the genetic lottery. In book 2 I think, Arthur claimed Granger was a historical wizard figure and asked Hermione if she bore a relation to him. She denies this but what if someone in the Granger family was a squib in the past and years later she got lucky?? So basically if you mate with a muggleborne, you are basically reproducing with a muggle. Which in turn increases the chances of a squib kid. Squibs can't function in the magic world properly.
Concern 2 - Wizards are a minority
Wizards are a minority in a muggle majority. It's a fact that minorities are wiped out when they reproduce with the majority.
Hagrid says this in book 2:
“Dirty blood, see. Common blood. It’s mad. Most wizards these days are half-blood anyway. If we hadn’t married Muggles we’d’ve died out.”
If Hagrid is right and most wizards are half-blood, how is this a good thing? Given enough time, if wizards keep diluting their race like this by reproducing with muggles, the wizard minority will slowly be erased which leads to...
Concern 3 - Cultural Erasure
It's more than just blood dilution but loss of tradition. Even if a muggleborne like Hermione integrates into the wizarding world, she will never truly grasp certain customs and traditions that pureblood families like the Weasleys and Malfoys will. For example, I came to the US for college. Even though I have been here for half a decade now, I will never understand what it is like to grow up as a kid in the US. I don't appreciate US holidays like Thanksgiving and Memorial Day. My kid likely will but they will have to learn those customs from an external source or maybe my future husband's family. Someone like Hermione may even see some pureblood/wizarding traditions as archaic and unnecessary. Over time, wizards will lose their culture and practically become muggles with magic. Which is why Hermione being minister of magic sometimes leaves a sour taste in my mouth. There's a reason why only born citizens can become president/prime minister for countries like the US (I would like to believe there is a reason anyway).
Concern 4 - Reproductive Issues?
Also, why did wizards need muggles to survive in the first place? Were the women/men having fertility issues? Was the wizarding population so minuscule that they were inbreeding? Or were they simply just horny for muggles? If small native/African tribes are/were able to survive without reproducing with white invaders or other outsiders why is it different for wizards??
Concern 5 - Lack of New Blood
Still focusing on Hagrid's quote. Let's say every pureblood family started with a muggleborne wizard/witch. Therefore given enough generations, Granger could theoretically become a pureblood name like Malfoy or Weasley. But there's a problem: there aren't enough mugglebornes!
Read Hagrid's quote carefully. He said wizards would have died out if they did not intermarry with muggles. Not that wizards would have died out without mugglebornes adding to the population!
This further adds to my blood dilution argument. Basically, we have a fixed magical gene pool which is being stretched every generation with more and more half-bloods being popped out.
Conclusion
Pureblood purists have rational reasons to favour blood purity and to be frustrated with "blood traitors". As more pureblood families like the Weasleys intermarry with muggles/mugglebornes, there is an ever-smaller marriage pool for purebloods. Throw in cultural dilution too.
If JKR wanted to add depth to the muggleborne discrimination, she should have shown how mugglebornes are critical to the survival of wizarding kind and how much purebloods actually need them. Maybe show them using their muggle knowledge to improve wizarding society while she's at it too? But it's like muggebornes like Lily and Hermione have amnesia and forget all about their muggle background! At least make wizards reap the benefit of magic and technology to balance out the issues of reproducing with mugglebornes and muggles.
I just wish JKR could have given purebloods more of a voice. Not all purebloods are crazy, bloodthirsty DEs or Dumbledore bootlickers. And oftentimes, there are reasons behind discrimination that should be examined and explored, instead of just demonized. Harry Potter is seven books worth of wasted potential. I don't know how anyone can say JKR was excellent at world building when the wizarding world feels so tiny and incomplete.

Ekel Tricity
Percy Weasley x Reader
Tumblr media
Masterlist - Join My Taglist!
Written for Fictober 2022!
Fandom: Harry Potter
Prompt: “You’re making my head hurt”
Summary: Percy and Y/N have been dating for a while, and Percy's finally made the "acceptable guests for a family vacation" list. However, since he's dating a muggle whose family doesn't know about magic, he's going to have to live like a muggle for a week. Despite his best efforts to prepare, he's certainly still got a lot to learn.
Word Count: 1,674
Category: Fluff
Putting work into an AI program without permission is illegal. You do not have my permission. Do not do it.
"Percy!" I cried as I flung the door open to find my boyfriend on the other side, looking a little tired but smiling nonetheless. I wasted no time wrapping him in a tight hug, burying my head in his chest as he hugged me back.
"Hello, Y/N. It's good to see you," he said, kissing my hair before we pulled apart. "To be quite honest, I'm just relieved I actually made it."
I shot a grin at him as I led him inside, grabbing his suitcase before closing the door behind him.
"It wasn't that bad, was it?"
"Honestly, I don't know how you muggles do it," he sighed, flopping down in the nearest chair without even taking off his coat. "I spoke to at least three men who just glared at me when I asked for directions, and when someone finally gave me answer, they gave me directions to the wrong place!"
I hid a laugh in my hand as I wrapped my arms around Percy's shoulders from behind, leaning my head against his.
"I'm sorry it was such an ordeal," I said. "But if you want, I could try to teach you how to use a thing muggles use to get around... it's called Google Maps-"
"Y/N, we're back! Is Percy here yet?"
I stopped short, kissing Percy's cheek before pulling away. I shot him a wink, then turned towards the doorway my family was coming through. They'd gone out for brunch earlier, but I'd decided not to go with them so I could be here whenever Percy finally arrived.
My family and I took a vacation together every year, and this time, I'd invited Percy. We'd been together for more than a year, and he'd finally told me he was a wizard a few months ago. Although my family didn't know that particular secret, he'd definitely reached family-vacation status.
"He just got here," I said, smiling as my family made their way in. They'd all met Percy before, and despite his exhaustion, he seemed genuinely happy to see everyone. We all chatted and exchanged pleasantries for a few minutes, but I could see how badly it was wearing on my already-exhausted boyfriend.
"So, Percy, tell us about your trip here," started my mom, leaning forward across the counter like she was readying for a long, in-depth story. I jumped in before either of them could get rolling.
"Actually, mom, Percy's pretty wiped out from the trip. I think we might just go upstairs and watch a movie, or else take a nap," I said. Her eyes widened and she leaned back with a nod.
"Of course! Get some rest. We've got all kinds of fun planned for the week, so you'll need all the energy you can muster."
Percy smiled and nodded, then grabbed his bag as I led him out of the room. We headed upstairs to our shared room, and Percy was clearly dragging as we went.
"Is it pathetic that I'm already missing my wand?" he sighed, dropping his bag at the foot of the bed before plopping down on the soft mattress. I smiled as I moved to sit next to him.
"Maybe a little," I teased, leaning into him. "But considering how immediately weakened I am without my phone... I can't judge you too hard."
Percy nodded. "Yes, I know how important those are to muggles."
I raised an eyebrow. Despite our relationship coming up on the year and a half mark, Percy had learned almost nothing about muggle technology.
"The ekel tricity that buzzes in your hand is clearly necessary, although I must admit I still don't quite get the appeal of it."
I stared at him, honestly too stunned to speak. Before I could figure out how to phrase any of the questions his statement left, he stood with a huff and walked across the room to the tv.
"Well, shall we stare at the telly vision while one of your muggle stories is acted out?" he asked, turning back to me with his hands on his hips and all the confidence in the world. "Or would you rather listen to a music box with ekel tricity instead? A radio, I believe?"
Percy waited for my response expectantly, a proud expression on his face. I gaped back at him. I honestly had no idea where to even start responding to all that.
"I... Perce... what are you saying?" I asked, unable to help a slight laugh in my voice. He frowned, but it was quickly replaced with the same confident expression he'd had before.
"Impressed, right? I may have finally sat down with my father for a few lessons on all your muggle techy nology in order to prepare for my week living as a muggle," he said, giving me a smug grin. I hid my smile behind my hand. I didn't want to hurt his feelings, but the past three minutes of his speech had been utter nonsense.
"Perce..." I started, trying to be as gentle as possible. "It is so, so sweet that you wanted to learn about muggle stuff for me and my family. Really, that's wonderful. I appreciate it."
Percy's smiled widened, and he gave me a pleased nod.
"I really hate to tell you this, after all of that, but... almost nothing you said made any sense."
Percy's expression changed to one of shock as he processed my words, then his face fell.
"What? Are you sure?" I nodded, and a fierce blush quickly rose up his neck and across his face, all the way to the tips of his ears. "Oh. Well, that's... hm."
"Oh, babe," I stood and crossed the room to where Percy stood, floundering and clearly embarrassed. "It's okay. It's not your fault that wizards rarely bother to learn things about muggles. You had no reliable source material to draw on, no matter how well-meaning your father is."
Percy sighed. "I suppose. I just... I wanted to impress you."
"You already have," I said, giving him a soft smile and an equally soft kiss. I rested my hands on his shoulder, and I could feel his muscles relax as I moved to kiss his cheek, and then the tip of his nose. "The fact that you tried at all means the world to me. But... if you really want to learn, I could certainly teach you what things actually do here, and how they work."
Percy took a deep breath and let it out slowly, collecting himself and shifting his mindset. He'd come a long, long way from where he used to be, even when I'd first met him, and it made me so proud to see him doing so well.
"I would love that, Y/N," he said, closing his eyes and leaning down to kiss my forehead. "Thank you."
"Anytime. Anything, for you."
He hummed and smiled against my skin, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling me tighter to him as he did.
"So... if you want to start, this is called a 'tv'. A bunch of tiny particles get sent from a place far away to here, through the air, and the tv picks them up and interprets them. Then we get a visual version of those particles that ends up looking kind of like a moving portrait, but it tells stories that already exist and that don't change and that you can't talk to."
"You're making my head hurt."
"Sorry," I grimaced. "There's definitely a better way for me to explain this... Let me see if I can find something that might be easier to understand-"
I turned to grab my phone, but Percy stopped me with a light squeeze to my waist and I looked back up at him.
"Before we do that... any chance we could take that nap you mentioned to your parents? I think I might need full use of my mental faculties to understand whatever it is you're about to explain to me."
"Not a bad idea," I agreed. I started walking backwards towards the bed, and Percy moved with me. "Thankfully, beds and naps work the same in the muggle world and the wizarding world."
"Thank God for that," he sighed dramatically. I laughed as we fell into the bed together, then shuffled around until we were under the covers. We didn't even bother to change out of our jeans, and Percy only shrugged off his coat as an afterthought.
"I'm going to set an alarm for an hour and a half," I told him, rolling over to grab my phone. He hummed his agreement, and when I turned back to lay my head on his chest, I found him staring at me through tired, squinted eyes. "You okay?"
"I'm debating asking you about that thing you just did with your... telly phone..."
"Later," I decided for him. "After sleep."
"Hmm. I agree."
With that, he pulled me closer to him and closed his eyes. I snuggled up against his chest, closing my eyes as well, even though I wasn't really all that tired. Percy fell asleep in minutes, and I was surprised to find myself not far behind him. The warmth of the room combined with the soft sound of his heartbeat and the safe embrace of his arms was overpowering, and I quickly drifted off next to my boyfriend.
He still had a thousand things to learn about the muggle world, and I was in about the same boat with the wizarding world. But in the end, it didn't matter. We were meant for each other, and figuring out new things along the way would only make us better, together.
I couldn't wait for where our lives of different worlds lead us next. Other than to the tv, and an education of all the best muggle movies that Percy had to see, that is.
Although undeniably, that part would be incredibly fun too.

Not me imagining more a Frostpunk-themed, Muggle-centered scenario in which Snape is the key to truly unite Muggles and Wizards against Voldemort, that also focuses on the Snape family, in a way that hopefully reconciles Tobias with his wife and his son in a similar way to Endeavor.

Harry Potter’s Brazilian Translation: The Good, the Bad, the Why
The Good
Hufflepuff was translated to Lufa-Lufa.
Original name wouldn’t work/sound good in Portuguese because of how we’d pronounce the letter combinations
A+ silly nonsense name that works well with the language
Uses some of the sounds of the original name
Name changed for a solid, valid reason
10/10
Ravenclaw, became Corvinal
New name hearkens back to the original (corvo is the Portuguese word for raven)
Name changed for a solid, valid reason
10/10
Gryffindor was translated to Grifinória
Gryffindor is pronounceable in Portuguese and doesn’t sound too weird, so change unnecessary imo, but at least the new name is fairly close to the original
7/10
Slytherin was translated as Sonserina
Original name doesn’t quite work in Portuguese, but I think Slideríne would have been better
Though perhaps they were trying to play with snakey S sounds, which I can’t fault them for
8.5/10
Ron became Rony
Yes, it sounds funny in English, but it works well in Poruguese
Could have gone wih a nickname for Ronaldo insead hough.
9/10
Rubeus Hagrid changed to Rúbeo Hagrid
Frankly, I would have thought “Hagrid” needed more of a revamp than “Rubeus” (which could be fixed by turning it into Rúbeus)
I would’ve thought they’d change Hagrid into Rágrid to make his name sound right, but nope
That being said, Rúbeo wasn't an awful choice
6/10
Hedwig became Edwiges
Original name doesn’t work in Portuguese at all. Definitely a change that made sense, and into a name that’s pretty close.
10/10
Dudley became Duda
Yeah, Dudley wouldn’t quite work in Portuguese.
10/10
Dementors turned into Dementadores
Sounds better in Portuguese.
10/10
The Bad
Muggles became Trouxas
Way too negative for no reason. (Trouxa is a really rude way of saying “gullible” or “stupid”)
1/10
The Why
James became Thiago
Whyyyy?! We’re familiar with the name James because of James and the Giant Peach! James is pronounceable in Portuguese! And if you want to use a Portuguese form of James, Jaime sounds a lot closer han Thiago!
Albus became Alvo
Why?! Albus is a Latin word! It works perfectly fine in Portuguese!

"Baby, you're a fucked up little whiny bitch." - quote from a dear friend.
Draco can't stand being ignored. Any attention is good attention, which is why he tends to start spats out of nowhere. Drama queen.
He enjoys expensive clothes and extravagant outings, and may or may not have a penchant for attending underground parties.
Draco is smart. He knows it, he just won't say it. He can speak three languages and sign language now, he plays piano to mastery, and he's partial to the violin as well. There is an extensive history of ballet dancing that is not up for discussion, thanks ever so.
His anxiety can be crippling. Not that anyone save his best friends would ever notice. His facade is very strong and his walls do not come down very easily.
Do Not Touch His Hair (Parkinson exempted)
