New Studyblr Introduction!

Hello, I’m Muji, I’m going to start sixth form this year and I’m studying for the CAPE (Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination) and SAT. I just graduated high school and completed CSEC (Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate) exams. I previously studied Chemistry, biology, physics, math, English A & B, technical drawing, history, information technology and french. I plan to study Math, Chemistry, Biology and Physics in sixth form. I want to study Aerospace Engineering and Astrophysics in university. I really love space and history! I’m my free time I like to memorize lines from my favourite movies and tv shows. I wanted to start a studyblr to encourage me to review daily as well as to take good notes! I usually have really bad handwriting and I have a tendency to only do homework and not to review until the test comes up. Thank you for reading, I’m sorry it’s not too aesthetically pleasing I’ll try to make the posts look better in the future!

I often had classmates who put in brute effort to get good grades, but it’s much more enjoyable if you find an efficient strategy so you’re not wasting your time. If you’re preparing to take difficult history classes, here are some tips of things that I’ve done to do well in history classes with a lot of content or with a difficult teacher.

1. read the textbook!

that’s what it’s there for. it’ll give you important information even if the teacher does not teach in class!

especially if the teacher regularly gives pop quizzes -- you don’t want to lose points on those because they add up!

after a few weeks in the class, you’ll be able to pick up which details are important (these are the ones you should remember)

because I had trouble remembering a lot of details, I took some notes on the assigned readings, but they were all very minimal

don’t spend time memorizing the textbook. it’s a waste of time

don’t spend too long reading, either! practice reading efficiently so you can move on to other things

2. take detailed notes in class

ESPECIALLY what the teacher says!!! in one of my classes many students lost points on tests because they didn’t remember what the teacher said in class. if your teacher is power-point based, you should still write down what they say in the margins

if your teacher is lecture based, try to organize the notes in a way that you understand

3. figure out where the teacher gets test info from

if the teacher makes their own tests, figure out if it includes details from class notes or the textbook. if it’s the latter, there’s no other way but to read the textbook again before the test!

try to figure out what the teacher will test you on when you’re studying.

I often look at a piece of information and try to imagine from which perspectives/angles will a teacher ask a question based on that info

if you need practice questions, don’t be afraid to look online! (you might find some questions the teacher uses on the tests if they’re lazy hoho)

4. look at the bigger picture and trends

the biggest mistake I’ve seen my classmates make is focusing too much on the details. in history, the details are only important because they support a larger idea

this point is also important on the AP exam

while you may need to know the who/what/where/when of an event, the most important is the why. for example, what did this event cause/impact? what was this event caused by?

it’s also important to draw comparisons/contrasts between different time periods. what was similar? are there parallels between two places/times?

see how the political, social, economic, and intellectual histories fit together for a country and how it compares to the rest of the world

always keep in mind the small details in the context of the big trends

5. ask questions !!!

if you really don’t understand something, ask the teacher!! or your friends, if they are dependable

if it helps you, find some reliable, friendly people to study together (look our for leeches!)

6. don’t stress!

everyone has problems adjusting to a new teacher/class. just try to find out what their tests are like and try to make your studying habits fit the teaching style

don’t worry about a few bad grades. you’re doing great!
