The Midnight Hour-Creature Archive-Sanguis Amantes
The Sanguis Amantes, Latin for “blood lovers”, or “Sanguinarians” date back to the Etruscans of Italy as early cult worship. It is not set in stone where these creatures came from, however, many believed they were birthed by the head of a bleeding goat or snake-like creature. Eventually that blood bled in all the wetlands and rivers of Italy; forming creatures from those environments. There is speculation whether the Sanguinarians were birthed by a Chimera or the astrological symbol of the Capricorn. For now, the origin of these creatures remains unidentified.
According to early documentation of the Sanguinarians, they rose from the rivers in anger that the waters were not red. The Sanguis Amantes are known for ravishing themselves in blood, whether in consumption or bathing. If they do not consume blood under an certain amount of time, their true horrific forms shows. It is believed that those who died at sea were risen again by the blood of the decapitated Goat/Snake, therefore making mortals constantly keep their rivers full of blood to let the Sanguinarians be. In many instances, the Sanguinarians have drank the blood of the Etruscans for not keeping their promise.
There would be many celebrations for the Sanguinarians’ youthful immortality as Estruscans would serve them fresh blood; the Etruscans even drinking it with them out of respect. As the creatures regained their beauty they would live among the Etruscans and be served like Gods. Some Etruscans would even make love with the Sanguinarians; offering themselves to be bitten by them as a hopeful sign that they will become immortal.
Sanguinarians’ true form are rotted flesh that stick to their decaying bones. When they consume or bathe in blood, they retain their beauty they once had and can look like everyone else. Yet, these creatures have distinctive eyes like that of a goat as the legend says. Their goat-like eyes help sense danger, see farther than the mortal eye, and pay homage to their creator. Other than their eyes, they have various sharp teeth for biting like that of a snake’s fangs. Sanguinarians prefer to have their hair long that reach down to their bottoms as a sign of who’s the most beautiful (in which there’s not much competition as a lot of them have long hair and are pretty)
Sanguinarians also love attention and can be quite narcissistic. They enjoy music, almost too fondly, as they think every performance is made for them only and no one else. It’s more of a cultural thing as Etruscans displayed many musical performances for the Sanguinarians to earn their trust. If you offer them blood, you immediately gain their acknowledgement. Even if they don’t like you, they appreciate the gesture.
