Today starts #the100dayproject!!! I haven’t even thought of a personal hashtag, so I am just going to use #my100daysofpainting2020. A year we want to forget, but we must remember, as it will shape our collective history forever. I have been paralyzed by fear and depression for the last month. In 2018, when I did #my100daysofcolor, the project became meditative for me. A place to go everyday and reflect, while dealing with that feeling of losing myself to motherhood. It brought me peace and comfort having the project to go to everyday. It kept me moving forward, and I could see that progress when I looked back on each week. I am forcing myself to do this, because I need that again. This was my first painting from my first 100 day project, and the second photo is my daughter at the time. She was 6 months old. I would paint during her nap time and for 5 hours after I put her down for bed every night (yes, I am still tired from that). Now my children are 2 and 4. They stay up much later, and don’t nap. So, I have set up a table in my kitchen so I can paint when they are eating and having down time and when my husband gets home from work (and I can still be with them while I paint). This will be a challenge, but I NEED to do this. Thank you all for following along on this journey. The up side was that they slept a lot more than they do now! I was still up until midnight every night doing it. It was a challenge and this year it is going to be even more of a challenge. (#meetthemaker cont.) When I was a printmaker, I worked with a limited pallet and I preferred working with blacks and grays for yearssss. Then I decided to challenge myself and bring color back into the mix. I did a #100dayproject called #my100daysofcolor (check out the hashtag to see the work!). This is when I busted out my watercolors. I was already modifying inks and I have ground pigments since I was 16 (nerd). After 50 days or so, I got bored and thought, “hey! I could be making my OWN watercolors. Watercolors with meaning, substance, depth, and texture”. And so that’s what I did. ✨ I was very close to my grandmother. She collected costume jewelry and jewelry making supplies and beads and stuff, and I inherited all of these beautiful things that are out of style, but still have worth to me. I knew I would do something with them, but I didn’t know what until that moment! I started grinding them up and using them in my watercolors, along with other pigments I have collected over the years. Bam, it was a breakthrough for my work and life. ✨ My work is meant to speak of the fragility of nature and our lives on this earth. Innocence and childhood perspective are also things that I think about a lot. I am interested in how everything is in balance AND in flux. And I am obsessed with cycles in history, and natural history. I am also interested in the human experience, and I hope my work is flawed enough to represent that. There are a lot more ideas behind the work, but I don’t want to write three novels. Thanks for sticking with me and thank you for your likes and support. So, today is the start of the official #the100dayproject! If you don’t know what that is, check it out. It is a bunch of folks all around the world doing a creative project for 100 days. I did my first project last year, and it was a transformative experience, to say the least. I saw my work gradually evolve over the 100 days. I got better, more creative, and I eventually started inventing techniques that I have never seen before. #my100daysofcolor ended up being a breakthrough project. That is why I have decided to publish my first book documenting the project. It will be a 50 page book illustrating each painting from the project with some extra stuff too. For the next 100 days I will share parts of the progress of getting this thing together.
