Hello and welcome to National Knitting and Crochet Month 2024!!

It's been a quiet few years around here, what with there being a plague and all, but we're back and ready for action! I'm @tassified, you can call me Tassi, and I'll be your tumblr mascot for the month!

You may be wondering what this is all about, so let me explain: NaKniCroMo is a small, all ages grassroots project that's been around since 2017, styled after the more famous NaNoWriMo. Instead of writing a novel, we craft until we can't craft no more!

Pick yourself a challenge for the month - got some WIPs that need tackling? Got a special project you wanna do? Want to learn a new craft? All sorts are welcome around here!

NaKniCroMo Day 20: WIP Wednesday

The pink baby blanket is really coming along. I have something like 25 more rows left before casting off, but I'm almost definitely going to be playing yarn chicken at the end. I did replace the ladder ribbing section with some broken rib instead though, and I have plans for changes if I ever make this again.

I also started on the most complicated tablet weaving pattern I've attempted to date. Warping was simple, but it's the first I've done where the pattern cards are not turned all together for some of the picks. I started this on the inkle loom, but was having a lot of tension issues, so I restarted it on the Beka loom, and it's going much better there.

NaKniCroMo 2024 Day...something...WIP Wednesday:

As predicted, work and illness have been conspiring against me. I did lengthen the back of the vest last week, and am happy with the fit now!

HOWEVER. I realized I probably didn't have enough fiber left to make the lapels and have them match the back. So because I am Out of My Damn Mind (that's the technical term)...I have ordered more fiber! Don't tell Savitri.

While I was pouting about the vest (I only realized a few days ago that the dyer had it back in stock)/waiting for the fiber to arrive, I also ran a couple of under-plied skeins through the wheel again (pink and brown/blue) and started spinning tests for my next big project (gold/teal) to figure out if I want to do 2-, 3-, or chain-ply to show off the colors. So...we have learned that March is a month for spinning, not knitting.

Also, my tablet weaving kit arrived today!

Day 2: NaKniCroMo Goals

I am planning to start a project today using some of my handspun yarn: a quick ombre hat by designer Emily Dormier (Ravelry link to free pattern / chart) (hat kit and pattern available from ImagiKnit).

I would like to get comfortable with reading and executing on the colorwork chart. I would also like to ensure I have spun enough of my secondary color.

I may also post about random other fiber craft works in progress. March is a pretty packed month for me, so if I am able to post once a week, I will be happy with that.

NaKniCroMo Day 1 -- Introductions

March is such a lovely month, isn’t it?

In like a lion, out like a lamb.

Well, so far for the Midwest, it’s been more like in like a lamb, and I can’t wait to see what it comes out like. 

A few years ago, there was a post going around about NaKniCroMo – National Knitting and Crochet Month. It was a challenge akin to NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), to post about crafting and, I assume, to craft during the month. I haven’t heard much about it since, but this year I want to breathe life back into it and challenge myself at the same time.

My Goals:

My biggest priority this month is entry number three in my Sockageddon Challenge: Sheep Socks!

An homage to the shearing and lambing season, I wanted to make these socks the moment I saw them on pinterest. I have the yarn and plan on casting on later today, after work. You can find the pattern here, and later in April catch a making-of video by yours truly.

Next on the list is a pair of socks for the lovely mother of my lovely boyfriend. These were originally going to be a Christmas present, but she told me she wanted a pair of socks for Christmas in like… the second week of December. So it’s a belated gift. I’ll be using the Vanilla Toe-Up Sock pattern from Ravelry.

Finally, I have my sweater. It’s simply my own take on Flax by tincanknits, but I hope to finish it by mid-March, and have my own hand knit sweater to wear before it gets too warm.

Wip Wednesday

Working on a somewhat freehanded sweater for my parents' dog. He's a great dane, so store-bought sweaters often don't fit him, or if they fit around his chest are way too short, so my parents sent me his measurements for me to make him a custom one.

I did some reflecting during stream and for this year's NaKniCroMo, I got a lot accomplished!

I was able to write a cowl pattern and do two test cowls. I also made my state fair cowl and a bonus one to sell! I finished my secret pattern and successfully blocked it with wires. I made ligYarn (Pineapple plushie), Yarntasmo (elp), a whole baby blanket, and the Winnie the Pooh set. I also started my state fair shawl and worked on the other baby blanket. Not to mention, I also made a stack of like 8 dishcloths.

I learned some new techniques and stuff that makes me super happy. I learned how to crochet with lights, how to do the chainless double crochet start, how to make a ragdoll style toy, how to add hair to dolls, and I started to actively work in #1 weight yarn. I even wrote a whole pattern using that kind of yarn! Not to mention I was able to create my own stitch for that pattern and bring a crude drawing to life through yarn!

It was a very productive month of crochet and I feel like I accomplished my goals and exceeded them!

I wasn't acquainted with the idea of National Knitting and Crochet Month / NaKniCroMo in March (fashioned after NaNoWriMo / National Novel Writing Month in November). However, I saw a post this year and figured I would try it out

NaKniCroWriMo Week 1: Meet the Maker

Day 1: Introduce yourself

I have been dabbling in random fiber arts like latch hook and pot holder weaving since childhood, but learned knitting and crochet when I was 17. I took to knitting in particular, and knitted on and off for years (mostly basic hats and scarves).

When I was in my late twenties, a coworker was knitting at his desk, which renewed my excitement about knitting. We started a craft club together at work, and I expanded my knitting skills significantly (knitting with double pointed needles, knitting small toys, knitting socks, etc.), and relearned the basics of crochet from a craft group member.

In my mid-thirties I started experimenting with machine knitting, first with round Addi knitting machines, then with flat bed and double bed knitting machines, then with circular sock knitting machines. I found that relearning crochet basics yet again was useful for finishing machine knit pieces. This time crochet finally clicked with my brain, and while I am still at essentially the proficient novice stage, I have made multiple shirts and a hooded cardigan, which has led to me teaching some crochet basics classes locally.

At this point, I have been exposing myself to various fiber arts, and picked up both spinning (drop spindle, manual wheel, and espinner) and weaving (mostly rigid heddle loom weaving, but trying other small looms and cards, and working to get a small 8 shaft floor loom).

Edited to add: I also do some cross stitch and needlepoint here and there, but am usually too impatient to do anything not tiny
