“Nehanda” is a performance by artist nora chipaumire that defies description. The piece probes the Zimbabwean fight for independence and its colonial history, through the legend of Nehanda, a spirit that embodies only women and is venerated by the Shona people in Zimbabwe and central Mozambique.

The complete performance runs five and a half hours, but a one-hour slice will be performed at ArtsEmerson May 17-21. The music is a powerful part of this experience. It has been described as an African opera, but listeners will find instruments and sounds new to that genre, like turntables, Ngoma drums and samples of field recordings. “Nehanda” is multisensory, impactful on every level.
“It’s beautiful, it’s powerful, it smells, it’s acoustically sensational,” says Peter van Heerden, a member of the show’s developmental team and the actor playing The Empire. “The story that’s been told is so rich and big and fat and it continues to live on in some way because colonialism’s not dead.”
chipaumire grew up in what was then called Umtali, Rhodesia (now Mutare, Zimbabwe) and was educated under a system that forced colonial narratives on Black native Africans. Her experiences inform this work, but it’s told in much broader terms, encapsulating the deep connection and history of native Zimbabweans to their land and the deep, long term impact of colonialism on the culture.
“Nehanda” is not a comfortable piece of art. And it’s not supposed to be. Audience members sit on stage with the cast, they are complicit in the action and can choose how to react. They can sit in silence and merely observe or they can chant in unison with the cast.
Tumblr media

“You’re not coming to watch a pantomime. You’re not coming to watch a 90-minute play or a 20-minute movie,” says van Heerden. “We’re asking you to come for five and half hours, be present, be engaged, be part of what is happening and have the experience. If you’re not ready to do that, don’t waste your time.”
The performance has only been done in full once, but the team has plans to perform all five and half hours in Montreal later this year. “Nehanda” is at its most powerful when taken in full. For now, Boston will be stirred by this one-hour selection of the piece.
“For my entire life I have been in search of justice and Nehanda is the spirit of justice,” says nora chipaumire. “Whenever [the performers] sit with the public in any city, including Boston, that is success.”

Oracle: Atete- worthiness
Resilient- May your soul weather the storms
Sunglasses- watching, looking, stalking, gaslighting, perception, focusing out
Balsamic Moon- a time for healing
pile 6 you guys went out with a bang! This one caught me off guard! Some of you could be looking for closure/Truth in a situation, but your Sacral wants you to see your self worth first Sometimes you need to leave first before you get closure. When your constantly around a certain group of people it can be hard for you to see how they conditioned you. You need to take yourself out of situation to a different perspective that'll be when you get the truth. Your sanity/ mental is the most important thing don't keep digging a grave for yourself by staying. Love yourself and leave sis. Your Sacral needs healing whoever this person is has definitely taken a toll on your self worth and your self care. I was hearing stitches by Shawn Mendes Go listen to it because it has a message for you and also self care by Savannah Cristina. You seem like a great person but don't let other takes advantage of you I think this person messed with your intuition and that led to your womb turning against them because they disconnected you from that by telling you whatever lies. You could have had issues while having sex with this person. This is why your no longer happy in this situation. No more mind games connect with your womb and forgive yourself for not listening to your womb. She is your first brain. Your womb is the biggest factor in your body as a woman. She'll always send you the signs first as cautions!

Hold on I just had a thought about mad liberation and how specifically the imperial core carcelizes madness. This is highly shaped by specifically the work of Walela Nehanda, Riot Diaz, readings of "Sick of It" a disability justice and prison abolition zine, Lacey Weekes, along with learning I've done from my friend who I will name M until I get his permission to post his name.
I think western medicine as a societietal institution tries to medicalize, stigmatize, and remove divergence in cognitive function and unreality and erase the autonomy and realities of those of us who just happen to experience this. It's also a core example of why a narrow worldview of acceptable mind types limits human greatness, variance, and collective strength. It is a threat to have people look at anything in any way outside a very specific norm because if we look hard enough we can see society and it's pieces of acceptability, adherence to the norm, and complacency as they truly are. A prison of individualist making.

All This Twisted Glory (This Woven Kingdom #3) by Tahereh Mafi HarperCollins
As the long-lost heir to the Jinn throne, Alizeh has finally found her people—and she might’ve found her crown. Cyrus, the mercurial ruler of Tulan, has offered her his kingdom in a twisted exchange: one that would begin with their marriage and end with his murder. Cyrus’s dark reputation precedes him; all the world knows of his blood-soaked past. Killing him should be easy—and accepting his offer might be the only way to fulfill her destiny and save her people. But the more Alizeh learns of him, the more she questions whether the terrible stories about him are true. Ensnared by secrets, Cyrus has ached for Alizeh since she first appeared in his dreams many months ago. Now that he knows those visions were planted by the devil, he can hardly bear to look at her—much less endure her company. But despite their best efforts to despise each other, Alizeh and Cyrus are drawn together over and over with an all-consuming thirst that threatens to destroy them both. Meanwhile, Prince Kamran has arrived in Tulan, ready to exact revenge… Layered with exquisite tension and heart-stopping romance, All This Twisted Glory is the explosive third book in the captivating, bestselling This Woven Kingdom series.
ASAP by Axie Oh HarperTeen
Sori has worked her whole life to become a K-pop idol, until she realizes she doesn’t want a life forever in the spotlight. But that’s not actually up to Sori—she’s caught between her exacting mother’s entertainment company and her father’s presidential aspirations. And as the pressure to keep her flawless public image grows, the last person she should be thinking about is her ex-boyfriend. Nathaniel is off limits—she knows this. A member of one of the biggest K-pop bands in the world and forbidden from dating, he isn’t any more of an option now than he was two years ago. Still, she can’t forget that their whirlwind romance was the last time she remembers being really happy. Or that his family welcomed her into their home when she needed it most. . . . So when Nathaniel finds himself rocked by scandal, Sori offers him a hideaway with her. And back in close quarters, it’s hard to deny their old feelings. But when Sori gets an opportunity to break free from her parent’s expectations, she will have to decide: Is her future worth sacrificing for a second chance at love?
Bless the Blood: A Cancer Memoir by Walela Nehanda Kokila
A searing debut YA poetry and essay collection about a Black cancer patient who faces medical racism after being diagnosed with leukemia in their early twenties, for fans of Audre Lorde's The Cancer Journals and Laurie Halse Anderson's Shout . When Walela is diagnosed at twenty-three with advanced stage blood cancer, they're suddenly thrust into the unsympathetic world of tubes and pills, doctors who don’t use their correct pronouns, and hordes of "well-meaning" but patronizing people offering unsolicited advice as they navigate rocky personal relationships and share their story online. But this experience also deepens their relationship to their ancestors, providing added support from another realm. Walela's diagnosis becomes a catalyst for their self-realization. As they fill out forms in the insurance office in downtown Los Angeles or travel to therapy in wealthier neighborhoods, they begin to understand that cancer is where all forms of their oppression Disabled. Fat. Black. Queer. Nonbinary. In Bless the A Cancer Memoir, the author details a galvanizing account of their survival despite the U.S. medical system, and of the struggle to face death unafraid.
Bright Red Fruit by Safia Elhillo Make Me a World
An unflinching, honest novel in verse about a teenager's journey into the slam poetry scene and the dangerous new relationship that could threaten all her dreams. From the award-winning poet and author of HOME IS NOT A COUNTRY. Bad girl. No matter how hard Samira tries, she can’t shake her reputation. She’s never gotten the benefit of the doubt—not from her mother or the aunties who watch her like a hawk. Samira is determined to have a perfect summer filled with fun parties, exploring DC, and growing as a poet—until a scandalous rumor has her grounded and unable to leave her house. When Samira turns to a poetry forum for solace, she catches the eye of an older, charismatic poet named Horus. For the first time, Samira feels wanted. But soon she’s keeping a bigger secret than ever before—one that that could prove her reputation and jeopardize her place in her community. In this gripping coming-of-age novel from the critically acclaimed author Safia Elhillo, a young woman searches to find the balance between honoring her family, her artistry, and her authentic self.
Daniel, Deconstructed by James Ramos Inkyard Press
A nerdy high schooler learns to embrace his main-character energy in this witty and heart-healing ode to movie tropes, meet-cutes, and LGBTQ+ love. Photographer and film buff Daniel Sanchez learned a long time ago that the only way to get by in an allistic world is to mask his autism and follow the script. Which means he knows that boisterous, buff, and beautiful soccer superstars like his best friend, Mona Sinclair, shouldn’t be wasting time hanging out with introverts who prefer being behind the camera. So when Daniel meets a new classmate, Gabe Mendes, who is tall, mysterious, nonbinary, and—somehow—as cool as Mona, Daniel knows exactly how this is going to play out. Mona and Gabe will meet cute, win their nominations for Homecoming Court, and ride off into the sunset together. Daniel just needs to do a little behind-the-scenes directing. But matchmaking means stepping into the mystifying and illogical world of love, dating, and relationships, where nothing is as it seems and no one knows their lines. And when Daniel finds himself playing a starring role in this romance, he’ll question everything he thought he knew about himself and his place in the world.
The Girl, the Ring, & the Baseball Bat by Camille Gomera-Tavarez Levine Querido

Her talisman: a magical jacket from her mother’s past that gets people to do whatever she says. Caro: Leo. Rosie’s older sister. Always been closer to their estranged father – and always butted heads more with their strict mother. A trip to Dominican Republic for her father’s wedding leads her deep into family history that clears up any illusions about her parents she’s ever had. Her talisman: a baseball bat that fixes whatever it breaks. Zeke: Certified Triple Pisces. Up in cold-ass Jersey City living with his aunt after his grandmother dies and his father moves to London to take care of his mother. He crushes on EVERYone – he knows he’ll find happiness in love, and maybe a way out of this depression. His talisman: a manifestation stone that will make anyone fall in love with him. Rosie, Caro, and Zeke – and their talismans – find themselves intertwined in a magical, hilarious, and whip-smart Outsiders for the modern day, written by Camille Gomera-Tavarez, a 2022 Publishers Weekly Flying Start.

I Hope This Doesn't Find You by Ann Liang Scholastic Press
Sadie Wen is perfect on paper: school captain, valedictorian, and a "pleasure to have in class." It’s not easy, but she has a trick to keep her model-student smile plastered on her face at all times: she channels all her frustrations into her email drafts. She'd never send them of course -- she'd rather die than hurt anyone's feelings -- but it's a relief to let loose on her power-hungry English teacher or a freeloading classmate taking credit for Sadie's work. All her most vehemently worded emails are directed at her infuriating cocaptain, Julius Gong, whose arrogance and competitive streak have irked Sadie since they were kids. "You're attention starved and self-obsessed and unbearably vain . . . I really hope your comb breaks and you run out of whatever expensive hair products you've been using to make your hair appear deceptively soft..." Sadie doesn't have to hold back in her emails, because nobody will ever read them... that is, until they're accidentally sent out. Overnight, Sadie’s carefully crafted, conflict-free life is turned upside down. It's her worst nightmare -- now everyone at school knows what she really thinks of them, and they're not afraid to tell her what they really think of her either. But amidst the chaos, there's one person growing to appreciate the "real" Sadie -- Julius, the only boy she's sworn to hate...

You're Breaking my Heart by Olugbemisola Rhuday-Perkovich Levine Querido
Harriet Adu knows that her brother's death is her fault. I mean, it's not actually her fault, but it still kinda is, isn't it? She would do anything to live in a world where she could take back what she said that morning. Then a strange girl shows up at Harriet's high school – a girl who loves the same weird books Harriet does, who doesn't vibe with anyone at school the same way Harriet does – and that different world suddenly seems possible. The girl speaks of a place underneath the subways of New York, where people like them can go and find a home. A place away from the world of high school, grief, cool people, and depression. A place where one may be able to bend the lines of reality and get a second chance at being a better person. Will Harriet open the door? With You're Breaking My Heart , award-winning author Olugbemisola Rhuday-Perkovich offers a remarkable speculative novel that will hit home for anyone who yearns for that one chance to do things over.

Charwe Nyakasikana (c. 1840 - c. March 1898) was born in Central Mashonaland. She was the daughter of a man named Chitaura, who was the younger son of Shayachimwe. Shayachimwe founded the Hwata dynasty in the upper Mazowe valley in the late eighteenth century. She married and had two daughters and a son. She was considered to be the female incarnation of the oracle spirit Nehanda.
As the medium of the spirit Nehanda, she made oracular pronouncements and performed traditional ceremonies that were thought to ensure rain and good crops. She held great authority even before the 1896-7 rebellion. She was a powerful woman and staunchly committed to upholding traditional Shona culture. She was instrumental in organizing the nationwide participation in the First Chimurenga of 1896–97. King Lobengula recognized her as a powerful spiritual medium in the land. She occupied an important and influential position in the religious hierarchy in Mashonaland, where she is the only recorded woman known to have held such a significant position during the 19th century.
As white settlement increased in the land, according to sources she welcomed them by the pioneers and counseled her followers to be friendly towards them. Relationships became strained when the settlers started imposing taxes on the Matabele and conscripting them for various labor projects. Following the imposition of a “hut tax” and other tax assessments in 1894, both the Ndebele and Shona people revolted in June 1896, in what became known as the First Chimurenga or Second Matabele War. The rebellion, in Mashonaland at least, was encouraged by traditional religious leaders including her. The rebellion was initiated in Matebeland in May 1896, led by Mukwati. In October 1896 Kaguvi and Nehanda from Mashonaland joined in; these were the three critical people behind the rebellion.
After the end of the rebellion in 1897, she was captured and charged with the murder of Native Commissioner Henry Hawkins Pollard in 1896. She was found guilty, she was hanged. Much mythology grew up around the difficulty involved in killing her. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #womenshistorymonth

i am going to give the main piece of advice i have gleaned from myalmost 23 years on this earth and my time learning from incredible organizers, which i said to a friend as she discovered community for the first time in person
Let your love, your connection with community, your care, your passion radicalize you. This world can be cold and cruel, it's true. But we cannot cave to the whims of imperialism, to the whims of colonial violence, to the whims of capitalist oppression and individualism, to the whims of individualism constantly sewing divide as a result of these forces. (This outlook was taught to me through learning from Riot Diaz @juicyparsons, Reaux @reaux07 and Walela Nehanda [@itswalela] in the time I've known and interacted with their content and work online). These forces will us to become cold, uncaring, brutal, uncaring in the face of strife, suffering and violence. They make us go numb and they rely on such. (paraphasing Stefanie Kaufman-Mthimkhulu's posts on the way this is specifically weaponized in the genocide of Palestinians, Oct. 2023) You need to resist this. The boldest act we can have in this world is to love deeply, to feel deeply. we need to learn to connect with this world in a tangiable way to combat the disconnect we've become accustomed to. By connecting with each other, by loving each other in a way where we ACTUALLY support each other, share, collaborate, co-conspire). By learning to love radically again we can build such passion and compassion for the world that we cannot be blind to the suffering of each other. We need to do this urgently. The whole of humanity depends on it (All of the last passage was shaped by a mosaic of wisdom from all above mentioned organizers, along with Lacey Weekes of Idle No More London ON, Layla Staats, an Indigenous land defender who was on the front lines in Wet'suwet'en, Skyler Williams of 1492 Land Back Lane, Emunah Wolfe of @safeusesketches on instagram, Bangishimo Johnston of O:se Kenhionhata:ie, Andrewism on Youtube, and Noname, as well as my friend Ash and one of my students.
For those who are loveless or lack empathy, do not feel guilty. Care is just as powerful as love. Build care in your communities. Build connection. You are not broken and you can be radical too. Community is so deeply important to all of us, inclusing loveless people. Let yourself be embraced, encaptured in a web of people with experience both shared and vastly different. Listen to their every word. Let their kindness and words, and your joy in community radicalize you too.
