I’m not sure if I mentioned it on my other animal blog or here, I LOVE caterpillars, but the idea of touching one terrifies me! Even seeing pictures of other people handling harmless ones gives me the willies. Their spikes and fluff and warning colorations absolutely work on me, I don’t want to mess with them! Complete opposite of edible! Maybe I was a hungry predator in a past life who fucked around and found out?

Oddly enough, most venomous snakes are shaped like friends to me! I know better not to, but they look soooo touchable.

Listening to Sting of the Wild by entomologist Justin O. Schmidt right now. I'm at the chapter about Tarantula Hawks, the wasp with one of the most painful stings in the insect kingdom. Intrigued by his description of their vibrant metallic hues, I had to google them to see what they look like:

And I thought to myself, hmmm, this looks familiar...

Aha, I know where I've seen this before!

I had to confirm with the Fallout wiki that I wasn't misremembering, and sure enough, it was Tarantula Hawk (Latin name Pepsinae) DNA that Dr. Borous spliced to create Cazadores in Old World Blues.

And if the sting of a regular, normal sized Tarantula Hawk is unbearably painful to the point that nobody who gets stung can retain motor control, I dread to think what a Cazadore sting must feel like.

reptile expo day!!! i got so much stuff at the expo this morning. a massive cork bark tube and a big cork bark branch for jasper's new tank! marbled pothos, live moss, and a philodendron pink princess! i also picked up my OBT (third pic), c.darlingi, velvet spider (that tiny guy in the fourth pic), and my green lynx spider (second pic). lots of isopods too!

such a fun morning! got to see so many cool animals. i talked with the breeder who sold me the green lynx spider and velvet spider and he showed me a wild caught vinegaroon he's working with right now. super cool animal, i hope he's able to breed it so i can buy a baby someday lol.

🕷️ Spooder story time!! 🕷️

So I went to feed Morticia the other morning. I dropped a Dubia roach in there (they’re clean, tropical roaches - not the dirty house pest kind). It immediately ran to one of the few places in her enclosure it could legitimately hide

Whatevs. I figured I’d drop another one in and get the first one out later. I grabbed another one and smooshed its head. Their legs wiggle for a while to attract a predator, but it would be more subdued. So I dropped it in, and Morticia was nearby. I waited

I could tell she saw it, but she wasn’t moving toward it? And I was like, what’s going on, girlfriend? I knew she was very hungry or I wouldn’t have brained the roach (that would be mean if it wasn’t going to be eaten). She even looked straight at it from this perfect little perch doing this adorable tip-toe motion on all 8 toesies like “Oooo!” But she didn’t pounce

Then she turned, and I realized she had the first roach in her mouth

So she’s there already with a mouthful like “Aw man! Another one?!”

But wait! There’s more!

While she was preoccupied with that one, I opened her enclosure, and took out the beheaded one. Oh 😬

Thankfully, I had another hungry spider

I took it upstairs to Tango’s enclosure (my 2” Chaco golden knee) and dropped it down the “back door” of her burrow. At first, it looked like the decapitated roach started to burrow, and I was like “oh 💩”

But then, *spooder legs* appeared

And the roach was like “This wasn’t the kind of hug I wanted!” And then the spooder legs retreated back down the burrow

I died

Tango was like “Thank you for the DoorDash and ✌🏼😶‍🌫️”

i don't understand this extremely common thing in the herp and tarantula hobbies where people will be "Oh everyone has that species. why even bother with one of those they're boring" as if you're keeping animals purely to impress other people

I’m comparing two Ts I both already own and want to hear the thoughts of other people in the hobby on which of these Ts you’d consider to be more “advanced” in terms of keeper experience/difficulty keeping. One of what I’ve heard is the most difficult NW T species to keep and the other an OW, but one I’ve heard is a good first old world tarantula for someone branching out to the OW Ts.

Temperament and risks of bites/bolting especially factored in.
