10 Tips for New Writers
Find people to write with (another beginner writing buddy, critique groups for beginners, a mentor or teacher, online writer groups that you trust)
Accept all feedback, but you ultimately decide what changes to make
If you want to traditionally publish your writing—don’t post it online. Anywhere.
Be choosey with who you share your writing with
Rejection does not determine your writing’s worth.
First drafts are meant to be bad—you can’t edit a blank page
Write as much and as often as makes you happy
Try out lots of different techniques until you find the one that really works for you
Write what interests you—not what you think others will be interested in
Ultimately, writing is supposed to be fun—don’t be afraid to have fun with it!

Tips For New Writers
1. You ARE a writer. If you write fanfiction, you’re a writer. If you write one-shots, you’re a writer. If you only write for fun, you’re a writer. If you’ve never finished anything, you’re a writer. If you haven’t written in a while, you’re a writer. If you think up the most amazing plot but can never write down any words for it and you think it always sucks, trust me, you’re definitely a writer
2. Your first draft will never be good. It’s not the starting point that makes a story good, it’s the editing, so don’t try to strive for perfection in the first draft - you’ll only burn yourself out and get disheartened because you’re comparing the first draft of your story to the finished products of others, and they’ve likely undergone at least three edits MINIMUM
3. Never delete decent-sized chunks of your story. Retrying a sentence or even maybe a paragraph is alright, but if it’s anything more sizeable than that then you want to copy/paste it into a different document. I like to call it my ‘writing graveyard’ - you might be able to come back to it later on or find ways to tweak it that better fits the current narrative. And even if not, you can look back on it and see how far you’ve come
4. “Writing is a habit”. All this means is that, if you have some kind of consistent writing goal, even if it’s just 100 words every week, that’s still a guaranteed 100 words every week. A consistent writing practice means consistent progress will be made, rather than occasional spikes in productivity followed by long periods of no motivation. Just figure out what you can comfortably commit to without it feeling more like a chore than a fun activity
5. Make backups. If you work online, make sure there are backups of your work so it doesn’t get lost somehow. I’ve been writing all my first draft chapters in separate documents so far so at worst I’ll only lose one chapter if something bad happens, but I’ve also got everything backed up just in case
Best of luck in your writing projects!

As promised I said I'll give you fic recs to celebrate the fact that I have more than 100 followers now. Again, thanks a lot! This makes me happy! :)
So now, here's my gift to you:
Every fucking fic by xylodemon
The writing is always perfect! I'm not kidding, this is my favorite writer so far! I've never been disappointed by their fics. NEVER! I haven't finish to read all of them but I certainly attend to.
Fics written by deancaskiss
If you like reading about Cas and Dean "just" kissing, then you should try reading those, if you haven't done it yet. I haven't read all of them yet, I read only around 10 fics for now, but same I'll attend to read more.
Then, more specifically:
Blackberries Wild by SaltyWords (agent4hire22) Angst, Love Confessions, First Kiss, Canon divergent after 13x12, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, brief mention of suicidal ideation - around 2500 words
This is so well written, the descriptions are everything, especially the ones for the kisses. It could totally happened like that. It's very true to their character if you ask me.
a kiss for every season (literally) by sobsicles and it is also available as a podfic here read by Scintillating Gatria (LadyLoralye) Canon typical level of violence, Canon Compliant, Brief Dean Winchester/Benny Lafitte - Freeform, Angst with a Happy Ending, Kisses, Smut - around 22000 words
The title says it all, a kiss between Cas and Dean happens every season and since there's never enough kisses between these two, that fic is therefore perfect.
People Who Are Good Like Pie by sobsicles Blowjob, NSFW, Castiel is a Little Shit, Dean is In Over His Head, Flustered Dean, Confused Dean, Creatively ties eating pie into sex, Sounds disgusting but it's really not I promise, it's hilarious, fluff and porn - around 1800 words
And it is indeed hilarious imo as well as very hot. It's short and easy to read, really different from the above. But it's human!cas and I'm weak for him in a sense that there is so much potential with him in a fic and that I love him.
You and I Know the Way by aishitara Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Post-Series, Canon Compliant through 15x18, Fluff, a smidgen of angst, PWP, Porn with Feelings, Castiel Loves Dean Winchester, Mentions of Blood, Mild Hurt/Comfort - around 4300 words
There is human!cas in there too, so yeah I'm sold. Plus some amazing, beautiful, stunning art from winchester-reload is included in the fic so it's even more perfect. This is smut yes, but, BUT you can really see all the love there is between them and that fucks me up. That's the type of porn that makes me cry. I never thought I could say that about porn one day. But maybe it's because it isn't, this is just LOVE!
Humans Do It Better by Hatteress Episode: s06e10 Caged Heat (Supernatural), Excessive Drinking, Light Angst, First Kiss, Second more heated kiss, Kinda Funny.
I invented the tags here because it isn't on AO3. I need to mention this fic because it was like one of the first fics I read. It was more than a year ago and I still remember it. Maybe because I wished it had a next FUCKING chapter. I want to read more about it. I want to see what happened when they meet again later. I want to see what's going on in Dean's mind the next morning when he realized what he did, thinking about how he corrupted a fucking angel. Feeling guilty about it because it's Dean. I - I, maybe I'll fucking write this second chapter one day. But I don't know if it's a thing, you know, writing a sequel to someone else's fic.
Anyway, I hope you'll like reading those if it's not already done. I for sure have more fics to recommend but I have to save some for the 200 followers I guess lmao. One can dream.
BUT if you need specific fics, like from an episode in particular for example, you can still ask me because I sort them by episode tag too.

I’m a young writer with no writing experience and skills and I want to write a novel. I don’t know how to start it and each time I write something I end up erasing it because it’s not the beginning I want it to be. I can’t have a writing schedule because I’m a student at school and I don’t have a writing buddy or want a writing community. I want to write so much but I’m so young and I don’t have a proper literature degree to write one. I don’t want to die without writing my dream novel. I feel pressured to write it but I don’t know how to turn my imagination into words. I don’t want my novel to be trash and I know that there will be many phases of the editorial process but I just can’t help it.
My biggest piece of advice would be to partake in writing exercises for now. You don't have to be working directly on your novel in order to work on your novel, y'know? You can be making notes about what you want for the novel for when you feel ready to start actually writing it, but with you being so young and inexperienced, you might want to work on developing your skill first.
It's like with being a musician. I didn't just go into a jazz band as a first year saxophonist. I honed my skill and honed it and honed it until I was good enough to actually play in one. Same thing with this. Your novel writing is your end goal, but it doesn't mean you have to directly work on it.
You hone your skill (do writing exercises) and practice the song (making notes about how you want the novel to go) until you are ready to join the band and play/sing in front of an audience (write the novel itself).
You also of course can just dive straight in and just rewrite it later, once you have some writing under your belt, but depending on the kind of writer you are, this can either be detrimental and make you want to give up on the novel if it doesn't turn out how you want the first go around or it can act as a skeleton for later, when you do have the skills you want and you'll already have a foundation for rewriting the novel with your newfound skill.
No matter what you do, welcome to the world of writing. You'll do amazing, I know it. Keep up the effort. Writing is a lot of work, but it is so fulfilling. I wish you the best and I know you can do it if you keep at it. :)
Come let me know how it goes, no matter what you decide to do.

You ever hear people say, "well if you wanna read it then write it"?
Yeah, it's time. You have the ideas. You have the passion. So why aren't you writing?
It's not laziness, no.
You don't know where to begin? Probably.
Maybe you've started but you're getting stuck on how to enhance that story. Maybe you're doubting yourself. Guess what, writer? You're not alone! You can get allll the help you need all in one place.
And yes, I meant to call you a writer. You don't have to be a best seller to be writer. Hell, you don't have to be a published author to be a writer.
What would happen if you stopped treating this dream as just a dream?
Tumblr media
Behind the door you're blocking is where you'll find all the lessons you need to help you on your writing journey. A place where other writers go, led by a writer. Learning and helping one another. After this, you'll be able to write that story the way it deserves to be written! But you have to be fast! The doors for this opportunity close soon! But you could always, ya know, do the research yourself and be led to multiple different sites and people, and then more sites and people, and then sites and people. Up to you!
Hope you'll show up at midnight!
Tumblr media
psst, you can use code MIDNIGHT10 when you enroll!

I'm thinking of hopping back on here after a long while of not posting any writing tips/advice, I've got 6 drafts so far, and I'd like to know which one you guys would be interested in me completing and posting first!
(please keep in mind that this is my own advice and tips to new writers using what I personally find helpful, and it may not apply to everyone)

Writeblr Intro
Hey folks! My name's Red, I'm just a kid who's trying their hand at writing and aspiring to be an author one day. I decided to join the writeblr community in hope to find feedback and seek improvement.
I usually write short stories and novellas at best, with poems on the side. Got a few WIPs but nothing too serious so I won't go into depth in the meantime. Can't tell you much about genres since I'm experimenting, yet I could say all that I write falls on the realistic side. I'll be, though, posting projects that I wrote for fun or just as an exercise.
Other than writing and reading, I'm a realism traditional artist, and I do other things for kicks like sewing (thanks to the punk scene), and overcrowded moodboards/niche memes as a form of journaling.
I'd love for us to get to know each other! Don't be afraid to reach out to me at any time, let's be support buddies and help each other hone our crafts. See you around!

A Note for New Writers
When I started this blog, one of my goals was to compile advice that I hadn’t really seen online anywhere. Stuff a little bit beyond the foundations I was already very familiar with. I took university courses and different approaches to writing combined with my own experience and lessons from the mentors and teachers around me, and began to write it all down to share with you.
The idea was never that you would start writing your first character with Character is Plot say. However, I noticed there are a lot of new, beginner, or learning writers on here, and there’s a great value in really nailing the foundations, so here marks the start of a short series of foundational advice for you new writers (or for writers who have been around the block and may need a refresher. I know I do!)
I see a lot of new writers in the tags looking down on yourselves or your ability. Stuff like, ‘why can’t I seem to do this’ or ‘if only I could actually follow this advice’. My posts were never meant to make you feel like you aren’t good enough. It was written with over a decade of experience behind it. It takes time to build those instincts in knowing what to do. Unfortunately you can’t just build writing skill by reading and collecting articles—they can be a guide, but they aren’t meant to instantly come naturally to you “if only you were a good writer.”
No one can automatically learn how to write just from reading some advice because writing skill isn’t about the knowing, it’s about the practicing.
And it takes a hell of a lot of practice.
Writing is mostly intuition—we practice certain skills to get them to a place where we can just do them without really thinking about it. It’s kind of like when you were learning to type, and you had to constantly remind yourself to put periods at the ends of your sentences. Then, over time and a million reminders, you started to just do it on instinct without really thinking about it.
It’s muscle memory, it’s trying again and again, it’s a lot of struggling and tears and feedback and more tears and a million and one false starts and unfinished drafts and finished drafts that are really bad and lost contests and rejections. I have been through it all. I’m still going through it all. Only recently have I been published—it took me over a decade of practice to get there. Oh, and in the same month one of my pieces was published, another was rejected.
That’s how it goes. It’s not some switch that will one day flick where you’re ‘good enough’. And the timeline isn’t so set. While I was working on building up skill, I was also working on building up confidence. In the right publications, with enough confidence, I probably could’ve been published years ago. In the right place, and if you’re brave enough to submit, you probably could too.
It’s about who sees it, very rarely does it really depend on how ‘good’ it is (and you can tell from all the published work that can’t possibly be better than your unpublished work, right?)
TL;DR, writing isn’t about the knowing, it’s about time, patience, and practice. If you’re reading advice and don’t feel good enough to execute on it, just take a little bit more time and get a hundred thousand more words under your belt. One day, it will just become intuition.
You will get there.

Sixteen Summers
Sixteen summers passed me by,
My sun baked skin turned bronze,
And my braids slowly came undone,
As each summer, the winds grew warm,
I had a trophy shelf till 6th grade,
And it grew heavier each spring,
But as every autumn flowers fell,
I recall no joy twelve Mays could bring,
And way too often the seasons turn,
And I’m trying not to turn too bitter,
But the grass is hardly greener when,
Monsoon gives way to winter,
And for sixteen Junes, my summer has kept,
Painting each tragedy in sun-drenched gold,
But the year is hardly over yet,
And I’m only fifteen winters old,
Will my next November be kinder still,
Will my angels weep, carved from snow,
Or will the frost leave aching skin,
As I’ll watch the icy blizzards go,
But my sixteen winter isn’t the end,
Nor a pause in uncertainty,
For who knows what the heat shall bring,
The summer I turn seventeen.

Franky The Green Octopus
Before I post this this is just a quick note! I would like to thank whoever reads this cute tale of Franky the Green Octopus, he was inspired by a job interview that I applied for (didn't hear back but it's ok because Franky was born from this) and I just wanted to put the story out there. I used to write and I am scared to put my work back out there, but I'm in a big self-care journey and this is part of it. Hope you all enjoy it!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Franky the Green Octopus
Franky was the green octopus that everyone had admired dancing across the screens of millions of computers. He had the rhythm of a human but the personality of, well, an octopus. Franky thought he would never get out of that slimy aquarium. It was cramped, dark, and growing things on the side that even scared him, and he was a predator! Being in this cramped, algae-filled tank kept his skin tone a forest-green color.
Franky lived his days wallowing in the shallow aquarium hoping for a chance to break free. But one day, he heard an intriguing rhythm vibrating through his tank. What is this magical noise? He thought to himself. He had to know more. He slinked out of his tank and onto the floor, trying not to knock any of the other exhibits over with him. He inched closer to the locked door where the human caretakers ate their food, and the magical noise grew. Franky had never felt this feeling before in his year of life.
“I'm on tonight You know my hips don't lie (no fighting) And I'm starting to feel it's right All the attraction, the tension Don't you see, baby, this is perfection?”
Franky started to bob his head to the song, not missing a single beat. He had never heard anything so fantastic. He inched back to his tank, hoping not to get caught, all while bobbing his head. As the music grew, he swayed more and more, until his tentacles and head moved with the rhythm together as one. He hadn’t noticed the human caretakers come into the room, and as he looked in their direction, he noticed them pointing a brick-like device toward him. Nervous, he stopped his swaying. “Oh no, keep going!” Said the first human. “He could make us millions...” Replied the second.
Franky was puzzled, but slowly began to bob his head, making the first human’s frown turn to a wide smile. “Yes! That’s it, Franky!” Franky then began to move the rest of his body with the rhythm, resulting in applause from the two caretakers.
*3 days later*
Franky was feasting on some of the leftover crabs given to him for lunch. He hadn’t had an appetite for a few days. He craved more of that joyful noise that was coming from his human caretaker’s room, but he didn’t know when they would decide to play it again. The first one was all smiles around him, which was odd. He didn’t know what he did to attract such attention from them. He belched the leftover crab and decided to close his eyes for a few minutes. Until…
The first caretaker entered the room with one of those strange things that they first took him to this place in. It soon got dark, and Franky was trying not to panic. It was a few hours later and he was dumped into a larger, yet magnificently cleaner aquarium tank. There was a crowd of people surrounding the aquarium. Franky couldn’t move. He hadn’t been in front of this many people in months. Not since his mate died… He understood that he could have gone on with life, but this mate was different. She got sick in that exhibit with him, but she didn’t make it past the first day of sickness. She made a turn for the worst and Franky…he got better.
He then heard the joyful tunes that he once heard that very night. It seemed louder this time.
“Come on Franky, show ‘em what you got!” He recognized that voice. It was his caretaker. His body eased up and he decided “Why not?” as his head began to slowly bob to the upbeat song. Faster and faster, he started to move his tentacles to the beat. He was swaying from side to side, doing flips, and having the absolute time of his life. By then, he noticed the room started to fill with people of all ages. He danced his little heart away and never thought that his life would change forever…
*1 year later*
Franky was on top of the world. He was on almost every computer screen in America, capturing their hearts. Franky lived a happy life, which being in captivity, he lived until he was the age of 5. He left behind a son and daughter, Sam and Ronnie, who took on his legacy as the green-dancing Octopi.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for reading if you got this far and I hope you enjoyed!

Last night my brother in law was asking about any advice for writing your first story, since he doesn’t know much about creative writing but have ideas. (Btw I’m not any published or professional writer, I’m just a fanfic author who has written a lot giving my two cents)
Since he seemed to find my take helpful I’m gonna share:
Write EVERYTHING down first. I don’t mean a first draft, I mean everything you’re already thinking of for your story. If you have a narrative to tell, writing down your ideas is the best way to start!
If you have specific scenes, write down how you imagine them.
If you have vague plot details or characters, write those down.
Have themes and narrative structure ideas? Write those down!
Writing this all down gets them out of your head and into a more tangible form, and it can feel nice to just have something as a starting point. It also can make it feel less jumbled or confused in your head, since now you won’t need to worry about remembering everything about your story at once by having it in your notes.
Writing outlines or drafts for specific scene ideas are also a great place to start, since then you can ask “what story would make this scene impactful?” It’s working backwards into parts of the narrative you’re more unsure about, and lay down some basic ideas for it.
From my experience, and talking with others, new writers can get stuck due to not having confidence in their skills which keeps them from ever starting. But you need to write badly first before you can write well, and you can always revise later.
Sorry if this is too obvious, but I know there are people out there who are like my brother in law and might benefit from the obvious being laid out for them.
Also here’s some videos and creators which helped me get started and think more about my writing in the technical sense, though mileage may vary depending on interests and such:
Two Professional Writers React to Lily Orchard advice and Two Professional Writers React to Tumblr Writing Advice By We are Not Alive - these videos are from the perspective of people who have written professionally, and they have a lot of solid advice for improving your writing.
Trope Talk Playlist by Overly Sarcastic Productions - This video series is long, so I’d say watch the ones that sound interesting first. Red, the host and artist of these videos, talks a lot about story structure, audience reaction, and how writers might use these tropes as tools in a story.
KrimsonRogue - He makes videos analyzing and reviewing both good and bad books, and his content is great in deconstructing why stories are bad as well as very entertaining. These videos tend to be long, but they’re worth the watch if you have the time!
Dominic Noble - An entertaining book reviewer who has a very good series on changes between books and their adaptations, as well as other good videos talking about books. He doesn’t analyze as deeply as others here, but his videos about adaptations are very interesting and talk about why things are changed.
In general, Analysis and review videos about books and media are a good way to start thinking about stories and how they’re told as well as a good way to find new books you might not have read otherwise. Reading books is important to writing them too, though I think most people intuitively know that anyways.

Reasons to Despise Being Literary
J. Estanislao Lopez
You know exactly the caliber of human being
you’re not. The birds are old news in the ongoing
docket of the beautiful. You jot inconsequential notes:
The Spanish morir (to die) recalls the English, more.
A slant rhyme: serenaded to; serrated tooth.
You know that, as Keats died, he did so in the throngs
of unrelenting failure. Your apologies are too well crafted,
and so read as insincere. You insist the world sloshes around
like fluid in the skull, but the only person listening
already agrees. When two mirrors face each other,
the image bounces at light speed, shrinks into pure calculation.
Amazing!—but outside your expertise. There’s a taste
of ruin in the air you’re convinced has waited centuries
for an articulation only you could orchestrate.
You continue to believe this into the last decade of your life.
Like a machinist who has come to terms with his outdatedness,
you recline staring upwards. Only the naïve call it the firmament.
All you can offer anyone suffering in the world is a sentence,
which is more often than not not enough.
