random njbc childhood hobbies headcanons

chuck was enrolled in a bunch of activities bc bart didn't want him around so he can play piano, do fencing, play polo, row, play tennis, play lacrosse, speak multiple languages and play golf. as he got older he would just ditch but he does help teach henry to play piano. despite being in almost every rich kid extracurricular he can't really swim

blair learnt how to ride a horse along with serena, and actually enjoyed it but had to stop eventually bc she was too intense and made the horses nervous (and eleanor was concerned she'd get too horse girly) she named her horse audrey

serena really wanted to take art classes but lily thought she'd get too messy so she just snuck into them when she was meant to be at ballroom dancing lessons. blair had to help hide the paint in her hair and on her clothes

nate loved doing every sport he could except golf, and he drove a golf cart into a sand bunker bc he was bored and it was unattended (chuck took the blame and the captain kinda knew but never said anything)

blair and chuck were paired up in dance classes when they were like 8 and actually enjoyed it bc they were so in-sync but didn't tell each other

serena wanted to join in on the boys' hobbies but obviously couldn't so nate and chuck tried to show her how to fence. blair was very enthusiastic to hold a sword too

i think everyone who likes gossip girl should read magnolia parks bc it’s fun and they’re rich and hot and a bunch of bratty co dependent young adults who have known each other since birth and they just date each other and be mean to each other (AND THE IT GIRL SERENA TYPE IS LITERALLY BLACK WHICH IS V SPECIAL TO ME AND MY INNER CHILD) (i mean attitude wise she’s more of a blair but it girl wise more of a serena like idk how to explain it she’s a good mix)

but it’s literally gossip girl but in london and the characters are awful but in a rlly fun likable way and wow i love this series i want to live inside it

Even throughout the later episodes, Nathan is always asking about Brooke, whether Haley or Julian, and checking up on her. I really have it in my head that they were closer in high school (despite being antagonistic towards each other, based on how they were at that time) & that he has a soft spot towards her. Kind of like Gossip Girl's "Non-Judgmental Breakfast Club" vibes, where even when they're not together Nate is protective over Blair and Serena (Chuck is too toxic to compare to THEE Nathan Scott).

Wait! I was scrolling through Sena's blog (of course) and I just noticed this!

It kind of gives into the idea that all of these kids are lonely, despite being surrounded by people. Serena is the golden girl, so of course no one would be her friend because they are either intimidated by her, or scared of Blair's wrath. Blair is alone at this party because Nate has left her (because of Serena’s arrival? I don't remember), and now she sees Serena with a new boy and it's like she never left, but Blair feels that loneliness. So it's almost like time has moved backwards, but Blair still feels that pain. Then you have Nate, who has so much inner turmoil going on because of The Event, and has emotionally isolated himself from his girlfriend (who he loves! but maybe not in the way that was expected of them), he can't rely on his homelife for mental and emotional security, and the girl he is in love with left him without any warning and wants nothing to do with him. Dan practically blends into the crowd and you really wouldn't notice him if the camera's focus wasn't on him (which is like... duh, but I hope you guys catch what I mean). The only thing that marks his difference is that while everyone else is facing forwards, he is looking to the side, a direction in-between back and front (almost like how the UES is its own world, in-between issues of the common wealth and of royalty that doesn't truly affect them). But what does he get if he faces forward? Divorced parents, no friends, a life as the invisible boy that no one cares to look at. But what's to the side? A girl. A girl who, to him, is an escape from his life.

All these kids are so lonely, and I think these shots were purposeful. Of course, semantics; shots look good whenever you center frame a shot with characters, that's obvious. But looking deeper, you see their loneliness and how delicate their lives are.

Hii for your Chair question: what do you think their pre-series relationship was like? Any headcanons for the NJBC as childhood friends? Imo there's so much untapped potential in their early dynamic, it's hard not to wonder if there was always a little spark they always suppressed because Blair was always in love with Nate and Chuck would never do anything to betray his best friend. I'll always hate that we only got one (Chuck-less) NJBC flashback scene! 😭

hi!! ohh this is such a fun question tysm 🫶🏻🫶🏻 I definitely think there was something between them pre-series as in 1x03 they've obviously schemed together a lot (and blair doesn't want nate to know which is so interesting and I think speaks to the fact that no-one understands the real blair except chuck as clearly nate wouldn't get her scheming) and their cute moments in the limo in the pilot. I think that neither of them would've ever admitted it bc as u said she was nate's perfect gf and he was nate's best friend, and tbh I think they were probably a little oblivious to the depth of their feelings. I know some ppl think chuck loved blair before the pilot but imo he just saw her as a friend and scheming partner. I do think they did things together that they couldn't do with anyone else, and have their own little jokes and references and things like that, while nate and serena had no idea what they were talking about 😭😭 also chuck definitely talked about his sex life openly with blair while she pretended to be disgusted but she was secretly fascinated (and maybe a little curious about him 😏) and she definitely complained about nate to him. I have this idea that in the not quite a year serena was gone blair and chuck spent a lot more one-on-one time together that helped strengthen their friendship, and chuck listened to her rant about everything without judgement

in terms of the njbc in their childhood I headcanon that they went to the same kindergarten/elementary school (blair and serena met as babies as did chuck and nate, and the 4 of them actually met as like 2 year olds) and chair were a little chaotic duo. like if some girl stole blair's crayons she and chuck would plan something to take her down, meanwhile serena's like I can eat candy!!!! and nate's trying to tie his own shoes. I think they'd all go the cinema and theatre together and watch the most random things bc they could and they'd take turns choosing (bc of this chuck and nate have seen legally blonde and clueless and blair and serena have seen every mission impossible film and the matrix)

also idk if this counts but I think blair would've had a "coming out" party with nate like she did in s5, except it made more sense bc she was 12, but didn't tell nate so he just turns up at her penthouse with chuck and they're like whaaat and then they basically have a tea party with blair, serena and blair's minions. chuck thinks it's hilarious.

btw ur SO right about being robbed of njbc flashbacks with chuck it would've been so fun to see them all together 😭😭
