HAPPY BIRTHDAY TETO(UTAU) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [APR 1]
Tumblr media
teto !!!!!!! teto is an utau originally released in 2008. her voice provider is known as mayo oyamano, and she's illustrated by Sen (線). she is one of "the 3 utau girls", and a vipperloid she's an April fools joke which originated on the Japanese imageboard called 2chan. Sen (線) created a rough sketch for her appearance and mayo oyama (then "nobuyo oyama", later changed due to confusion with the Doraemon voice actor) provided the vocals. the number on her arm was originally 04, since she was presented as the 4th cryptonloid, but it was later changed to 0401, in reference to April fools day. She gender is officially listed as "chimera" and she is 159.5cm tall. she is often confused to be a real Vocaloid even today, which is furthered by her appearance in project diva games
there's honestly more to say about teto but I'm too tired, sorru

Random Danganronpa Thoughts
Tumblr media
And speaking of two actors who both do great as a character, I was thinking about Brian Beacock as the voice of Monokuma in the games VS Greg Ayres as the voice of Monokuma in the anime, and where both of them deliver regardless of which of them you prefer.
In terms of which VA is more “the character”, as in which one better represents and replicates the intention behind how Monokuma was meant to vocally sound, I have to give that to Brian Beacock. The casting of Nobuyo Oyama, iconic voice of Doraemon, to voice Monokuma in the original Japanese versions of DR1, DR2, and The Animation, was a very intentional choice due to the unsettling whiplash effect it would create in players’ heads - they’d be hearing this whimsical, saccharine, cutesy and kid-friendly character voice saying all sorts of apalling, horrible things, gushing about murder and despair, and even sentencing people to death. The dissonance is even brought up in-story. “The voice seemed totally out of place. It was so playful, so unconcerned. I couldn’t help but feel a deep, unnerving dread at the sound of it. It was like hearing someone laugh at the scene of an accident.” The best English equivalent would be like if they had someone like Jim Cummings, Rob Paulsen, Tom Kenny, or Dee Bradley Baker doing Monokuma’s voice, but that obviously couldn’t be done. However, when Beacock really grew into the role and ironed out his voice for Monokuma, he did end up going with a very Dee Bradley Baker-esque character voice that fits the bear perfectly, making him sound as silly as he is unsettling, vulgar and crazed, which makes him such an entertaining presence.
However, in terms of which VA I think captures more of what is the pure distilled essence of the character and what that character would likely sound like in-universe? I give that to Greg Ayres, hands down. Because in-universe, in the world that the narrative takes place in and to the other characters in it, what is Monokuma? He’s a robotic plush bear who is being remotely controlled by a psychopath, who also does all the speaking through him. This is shown clearly in the final chapter of DR1 when Hina ends up controlling and speaking through a Monokuma in the Mastermind’s room that had been vacant beforehand so her words come out but in Monokuma’s default voice, and then later in the final trial we see that Monokuma is literally one of Junko’s mutliple personas she takes on, with her speaking in her own Monokuma voice not filtered through the default voice that’s programmed into the bear. The “Monokuma and Junko are one in the same” thing is even clearer in DR2, where AI Monokuma literally transforms into AI Junko in the final trial. So Ayres’ vocal portrayal of Monokuma actually sells this more, like Junko is putting on a cheery kids entertainment character voice that comes through the bear, but the truly unhinged, monstrous maniac behind the voice slips through at various points, particularly during the second half of the story.
Basically you could say that Beacock does a perfectly fitting “Doylist Monokuma”, but Ayres conveys the perfect “Watsonian Monokuma.” On the matter of preference, I personally lean more towards Ayres’ rendition because he was just so entertaining and so on point from start to finish, whereas Beacock really struggled under lacking direction and having to find his voice in DR1 before improving and killing it in DR2 (and then there was this weird occurance in the first half of V3 where he’d been so out of it for too long that he made Monokuma sound overly saccharine, shrill and Mickey Mouse-esque before settling back into his DR2 voice and performance quality.)  But they both did great Monokumas the same way both Tim Curry and Bill Skarsgard did great Pennywises. Having a preference to the latter over the former doesn’t mean I’d sell Tim Fucking Curry short!

Just made a hc fancast of Deltarune characters (spoilers for ch2 ahead!) because I couldn't resist, I often imagine these voices in my head while reading/writing. Fancast under the cut, both English and Japanese VAs!
Kris Dreemurr: Sarah Natochenny | Mitsuki Saiga
Susie: Kimberly Brooks | Junko Minagawa
Ralsei: Bryce Papenbrook | Yuuki Kaji
Lancer: Greg Ayres | Nobuyo Oyama
Rouxls Kaard: Eric Stuart | Masaya Onosaka
King of Spades: Greg Ayres | Rikiya Koyama
Jevil: Max Mittleman | Daisuke Hirakawa
Noelle Holiday: Cristina Vee | Sora Amamiya
Berdly: Matthew Labyorteaux | Takahiro Sakurai
Queen: Lydia Leonard | Yuriko Yamaguchi
Spamton G. Spamton: Alex Norton | Takehito Koyasu
I might add more characters, so it's kinda on going. I chose two female VAs for Kris, specifically Sarah Natochenny and Mitsuki Saiga because they have an androgynous voice in most of their dubs, I simply think their voices might fit Kris! Especially Mitsuki Saiga. Lancer and the King have the same Eng VA because I think Greg Ayres would do both of them very well. Unfortunately I don't know many Eng VAs, so I just chose those who I know + my favorites (I think you can also tell what are my tastes by seeing this fancast LMAO). If you also have suggestions, I'd be glad to read them! ;;

who's your favorite voice actor throughought the dr games?
Well in terms of Japanese, I truly adore Monokuma’s seiyuu for the first two games the most. Unfortunately Oyama Nobuyo had to retire. I actually couldn’t play v3 with the Japanese voice track for that reason, though I’ve heard what they all sound like. Personally, I think both the English and Japanese voice casts did a great job and we don’t talk about the animation dub since only Junko sound right.
I guess I don’t totally have a favourite though? I don’t follow seiyuus or voice actors terribly closely anymore so I focus on the voice as just a part of the character. There are definitely impressive performances for sure though.

Vocaloid Spotlight: Teto Kasane
Anyway, I guess it’s time to move on to the Utauloids on the blog. Most of these profiles are a bit more detailed than the Vocaloid ones of course. This time we’re going to start with the most well known Utauloid, Teto Kasane.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Name: Teto Kasane
Voice Provider: Mayo Oyamono (Aka Yamanon. On the fake website for the April Fools joke she was called Nobuyo Oyama in reference to the voice actress for the character Doraemon but using different Kanji than actual actress’s name)
Release Date: April 1 2008
Creator: Sen (Illustrator)
Character Item: French Bread
Code: 0401 (originally CV04)
Type: Boucaloid ( 某CALOID in Japanese. Roughly translates to Vo-kinda)
Gender: Chimera (fans tend to just see her as female though)
Birthday: April 1
Age: 30 (Fanon age 15.5)
Height: 159.5cm (5'2'')
Weight: 47kg (103lbs)
Likes: French Bread, playing pranks
Dislikes: DMC (Detroit Metal City, a gag strip), rats
Info: Predating the release of the UTAU software itself by a few months, Teto was the first of several characters created by a group of trolls on 2chan from the @Vip2ch board known as the Vippers for the propose of fooling people into thinking she was a new Vocaloid as an April Fools day prank. Specifically, she was created to be a fake CV04, the fourth member of Crypton's Character Vocal series (aka the Half-Life 3 of Vocaloid, to this day fans are still waiting for Crypton to release CV04).  This is the reason why a lot of her "official" info is deliberately weird, like having Chimera for a gender and supposedly being 30 despite looking like a teenage girl. Fans like to joke that 30 is her "Chimera age" and that she's 15 in human years (That's the reason for the struckthrough 30 on the muse page). A lot of her info is also a pack of stealth references to Doraemon according to the UTAU wiki. Though compared to some of the later April Fools day "fake Vocaloid" Utauloids the Vippers made, Teto is pretty normal.
Her official personality is described as innocent, cheerful and eager to prove herself, if occasionally mischievous at times, prone to playing pranks on others. She's a bit narcissistic and loves being the center of attention. She's also been described as a tsundere, who teases those she likes to hide her affection for them. She loves french bread and has been known to throw temper tantrums if someone has some but won't share with her and supposedly will go on a rampage if she doesn't get to eat at least one piece of french bread a day. Her status as a chimera is usually expressed through her being able to spontaneously grow batlike wings and a tail and it's implied that this transformation may or may not come with some sort of split personality. Fans will often omit or add on to these characteristics depending on the work. For one thing, her chimera form doesn't get a lot of attention these days and almost no one does anything with the implied split personality. She also kind of has an older brother named Ted, though Ted is more like a pitchloid (A genderflipped Vocaloid derivative created by modulating the pitch of a voicebank to make it sound like the opposite gender).
Teto is essentially to UTAU what Miku is to Vocaloid, being the most recognizable Utauloid even to people who otherwise don't know anything about UTAU which occasionally leads to her being mistaken for a Vocaloid herself. This is helped along by her being one of the few Utauloids to have official recognition, having appeared in several Project Diva games as a DLC character (the only other character to share a similar distinction is Nana Macne who did one better by becoming an official Vocaloid).
My Take: Teto is the other main character of the AU as Voice for the Utauloids. She has her chimera form and everything and not a whole lot has changed about her, though her official age is 15 here (none of that "30 in Chimera years" stuff) and her gender is female. Also, there’s a big emphasis on her status as a leader of the Utau with her being kind of Rodimus to Miku’s Optimus but generally more competent at it than Rodimus usually is in most media (if still very unconventional, quirky and inexperienced).

As many of you might have already found out, Monokuma's VA (Nobuyo Oyama, 81)  is suffering from dementia. Her husband said that she no longer remembers playing Doraemon nor anything else that has happened more than 2 minutes ago. She can't remember how to cook her favorite food. She claims she doesn't know Doraemon, but according to her husband, is able to speak in his voice.
She got back to work around July and recorded voice session for theatrical play version of SDR2(which will start this December), and judging from this, she might have joined the recording sessions for DRV3 too. Although she has short term memories, she still can read scripts and do some voice-acting and she is willing to continue her career so they're adjusting her schedules.
But that aside, a thought came to me. What if DRV3 becomes her last piece before the retirement?
It feels... just odd. I grew up watching Doraemon as a kid, and as an adult, I  enjoy Danganronpa so much. Monokuma and Doraemon were never one of my favorite characters, but I really liked both of them. And those two characters were like friends (especially Doraemon) I could meet if I just turn around a corner in my town.
I never thought about the voice of Nobuyo leaving. For all my life. Never once.
I know dementia is a disease extremely hard to cure and 81 is never a small age, but I really do wish Nobuyo for a good health.

Doraemon's Voice Actress is Suffering from Dementia
An anime character’s age might never change, but the voice talent playing them does, and the franchise’s generations of fans recently received the sad news that voice actress Nobuyo Oyama, the voice of Doraemon himself, is suffering from dementia.
Oyama’s talent agency says she has made public appearances since the onset of her dementia, although the actress, who is aware of her condition, says…
