One thing that rarely gets mentioned in stories is that Zatanna is quasi immortal or at the very least long lived.
She is a Homo Magi. In Secret Origins #27, Doctor Mist mentions that Homo Magi can live for up to 4 centuries. Some like Doctor Mist and Madame Xanadu found ways to extend their life span way past that.
Some comics like Catwoman Lonely City have shown Zatanna aging normally; either the writer wasn't aware or she somehow lost her longevity over the years. Anything is possible.
But imagine it's the year 2425 and Zatanna, Superman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Plastic Man, Madame Xanadu and Phantom Stranger are all hanging out together and sharing old war stories.

Christ, Pisces and The Mother Goddess
Tumblr media
Official Pyramid Media 369 website: www.pyramidmedia369.com
Last week I dropped an article about the Moon Goddess, IXCHEL to shed light on an actual experience I had last week during my meditations. Just connecting some dots as I go. A few years ago, I met a Dogon Goddess named Yemaya; we were in cosmic waters together but separated by a different densities of water. I won't go too deep into that story, but main point is that I know for a fact that the feminine aspect of God is alive and well! After I lost my mother on December 20th, 2012, my spiritual journey intensified x10. Almost as if my spirit alone was yearning for a greater awakening. Back then, I was still in the process of unlearning and relearning a few belief systems. Something deep down was telling me I could interact with my higher self with much more depth. That's the best why I can describe the feeling. I just knew, but the process of healing from that trauma made my enlightenment more purposeful. After all the Astral Travels and Outer Body Experiences I've had up until this point, I have a lot of things to share.
The Jesus Story & The Symbol of Pisces
By now, I know that many of the Bible stories are theatrical representations of something realer than the actual stories being told. It's much deeper than the surface level understanding we were taught in church growing up. The "Fishers of Men" are known to be the First Disciples of Christ.
In the Bible story, on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus called upon the First Disciples as he performs a miraculous catch of fish after the fishermen had been unsuccessful. Jesus calls the common fishermen to leave everything and become his disciples as "Fishers of Men." It's pretty evident that the esoteric definition of a Fisherman is not nearly the same as hunting for Bass or Walleye! Let's get the ball rolling with the deep stuff now. I am not denouncing the Bible. But I will say that there are ancient tablets & illustrations of symbols that are much older than the Bible was. And much of the same information can be found, but what we focus on today seems to be the incomplete stories, which ultimately leads to having incomplete knowledge.
Below, you will see the original symbol of the Pisces fish, which is known to be Christ's symbol. This is where it gets a little tricky. In all of ancient history, the Pisces Fish wis actually the symbol of The Great Mother.
Tumblr media
Many might ask, "How did a fish become the symbol of the Son of God?" Well, lets breakdown the esoteric meaning of what a Fisherman is.
Where does the term "Fishermen" originate from?
A spiritual Fisherman, is someone who has activated Christ within themselves and can show others the way to the Christ within, as well. Here I am trying to help you understanding the association between The Fisherman (Christ) and The Great Mother (Pisces symbol). I feel this is the missing part of the Biblical story.
Tumblr media
The Mother Goddess is the divine feminine symbol of sex and fertility. She is the mother of all living things. The zodiacal Pisces is also symbolic to the vagina and the Cosmic Womb. (I'll speak more on the Cosmic Womb in another article). If you don't believe the things I say, just look it up for yourself. There are many different archetypes of this energy. The divine feminine and divine masculine both have core archetypes that express themselves in a different light. There are Gods and Mother Goddesses that are connected throughout all cultures on the land. And most times, it's the same Gods/Goddesses, just with different names. All the Mother Goddesses seem to be associated with either the Moon, Venus or the Fish.
If you read about the Dogon tribe and the Mother Goddess, Yemaya, you may learn that these stores are very real and play a huge part in our Biblical history today. Yemaya was understood to be the mother & protector of all Fishermen. She is a water deity often depicted with Mermaid qualities; she is also equivalent to The Great Mother, Mother of Dreams, Roman god Neptune, Greek god Poseidon, and the Virgin Mary! Yemaya gave birth to the Sun, Moon, Stars and all the Waters and all Orishas. Wait, doesn't this sound very similar to IXCHEL, the Moon Goddess that I wrote about on last week's article? I guess we might need to add her to the list of Yemaya equivalents too! Lol
Tumblr media
Here is an illustration of the Yoruba/Dogon Goddess, Yemaya.
The Nommo & The Dogon Tribe
Yemaya is associated with the Nommo, who are fish-like creatures according to ancient hieroglyphs and texts. These water-beings originated from Sirius and taught the Dogon tribe the earliest knowledge ever recorded about the stars, astrology, and astronomy. Sirius is known as a 5th dimensional gateway and Earth's "Spiritual Sun", and also known to be where Dolphins come from. Look it up! Here is an ancient picture of the Pisces Fish (Left). You will see it is no different than the ancient depiction of Nommo (Right); these are water-beings that can still breathe above water. Pay close attention to the pictures. I'm not very sure what to say about the scales, but they definitely don't look like regular fish scales. These fish seemed to function as part-mammal!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just thought I'd share some knowledge. Hopefully this can serve as healthy seed for a conscience in need! Thank you for tuning in.

Dr. Mist in full on...well, Mist form. I went back and forth, but “Nimbus” and “Nommo” are close enough that I could see some immigration official switching them out, so Dr. Mist is an ancestor of the Golden Age Mist family (and, ultimately, Kylie Knight as the New Golden Age Starman). He was likely involved with Diana’s Society as well, thought instead of the League he joined/founded the Global Guardians along with Dorcas Leigh and others to better represent the international metahuman community.

The religious beliefs of the Dogon are enormously complex and knowledge of them varies greatly within Dogon society. Dogon religion is defined primarily through the worship of the ancestors and the spirits whom they encountered as they slowly migrated from their obscure ancestral homelands to the Bandiagara cliffs. They were called the Nommo.
The Nommo are ancestral spirits (sometimes referred to as deities) worshipped by the Dogon people of Mali. The word Nommos is derived from a Dogon word meaning "to make one drink." The Nommos are usually described as amphibious, hermaphroditic, fish-like creatures. Folk art depictions of the Nommos show creatures with humanoid upper torsos, legs/feet, and a fish-like lower torso and tail. The Nommos are also referred to as "Masters of the Water", "the Monitors", and "the Teachers". Nommo can be a proper name of an individual, or can refer to the group of spirits as a whole.
Tumblr media
Dogon mythology states that Nommo was the first living creature created by the sky god Amma. Shortly after his creation, Nommo underwent a transformation and multiplied into four pairs of twins. One of the twins rebelled against the universal order created by Amma. To restore order to his creation, Amma sacrificed another of the Nommo progeny, whose body was dismembered and scattered throughout the world. This dispersal of body parts is seen by the Dogon as the source for the proliferation of Binu shrines throughout the Dogons' traditional territory; wherever a body part fell, a shrine was erected.
The Nommo allegedly descended from the sky in a vessel accompanied by fire and thunder. After arriving, the Nommos created a reservoir of water and subsequently dove into the water. The Dogon legends state that the Nommos required a watery environment in which to live. According to the myth related to Griaule and Dieterlen: "The Nommo divided his body among men to feed them; that is why it is also said that as the universe "had drunk of his body," the Nommo also made men drink. He gave all his life principles to human beings." The Nommo was crucified on a tree, but was resurrected and returned to his home world. Dogon legend has it that he will return in the future to revisit the Earth in a human form.
The Dogon are famous for their astronomical knowledge taught through oral tradition, dating back thousands of years, referencing the binary star Sirius. In the latter part of the 1940s, French anthropologists Marcel Griaule and Germaine Dieterlen - who had been working with the Dogon since 1931 - confirming this theory. Their astronomical information begs the question - How did the Dogon come by this knowledge? Their oral traditions say it was given to them by the Nommo.
As the story goes ... in the late 1930s, four Dogon priests shared their most important secret tradition with two French anthropologists, Marcel Griaule and Germain Dieterlen after they had spent an apprenticeship of fifteen years living with the tribe. These were secret myths about the star Sirius, which is 8.6 light years from the Earth.
The Dogon priests said that Sirius had a companion star that was invisible to the human eye. They also stated that the star moved in a 50-year elliptical orbit around Sirius, that it was small and incredibly heavy, and that it rotated on its axis.
Initially the anthropologists wrote it off publishing the information in an obscure anthropological journal, because they didn't appreciate the astronomical importance of the information.
What they didn't know was that since 1844, astronomers had suspected that Sirius A had a companion star. This was in part determined when it was observed that the path of the star wobbled.
In 1862 Alvan Clark discovered the second star making Sirius a binary star system (two stars).
In the 1920's it was determined that Sirius B, the companion of Sirius, was a white dwarf star. White dwarfs are small, dense stars that burn dimly. The pull of its gravity causes Sirius' wavy movement. Sirius B is smaller than planet Earth.
The Dogon name for Sirius B is Po Tolo. It means star - tolo and smallest seed - po. Seed refers to creation. In this case, perhaps human creation. By this name they describe the star's smallness. It is, they say, the smallest thing there is. They also claim that it is 'the heaviest star' and is white in color. The Dogon thus attribute to Sirius B its three principal properties as a white dwarf: small, heavy, white.

Interesting tidbit that has been quietly retconned over the years; Zatanna's dad was originally missing for ~20 years~.
Tumblr media
Source: Justice League of America Vol 1 (1960) #51
This even made it one of her and father's earliest Whos Who page:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of these are from the mid-late 80's.
And a slightly more 'recent' one from the 90's:
Tumblr media
However in DC's 'Blue Ribbon' #5 (1980) by Gerry Conway and Romeo Tanghal she was shown as much older when she first learned that her father went missing:
Tumblr media
Later DC's Secret Origins #27 (1988) and her new Whos Who established that she was 18 when her father disappeared:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that has been the case ever since.
So if initially, Zatara was missing for 21 years, who raised Zatanna? That has never been specified. Aging her up to 18 when her father disappeared was a more sensible explanation as it explains why Zatanna takes after her father so much. Her 2010 ongoing by Dini further emphasized how influential present Zatara was in Zatanna's life.
Secret Origins #27 also suggested that Dr Mist has been secretly orchestrating the lives of many characters including Zatara and Zatanna (hence the 'despite your gender I decided to raise you' line in the cropped scan above) but that's been ignored ever since and rightfully so I would say.
Only time the 20 years thing was mentioned was in James Robinson's Starman ongoing when the titular Starman, Jack Knight, met with the ghosts of various Golden Age heroes and he uses that fact to great dramatic effect to compare and contrast the relationship between Jack and his superhero father and Zatara's relationship with his daughter:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source: Starman #37
(See more about Zatara's origins here)
As great as these two pages are, Zatara being missing for 21 years would never be brought up again. Zatara disappearing when Zatanna was 18 and only being gone for a few years instead of two whole decades is the current predominant canon.
Still, for an Elseworlds, it might be fun to consider what would have happened if Zatara did disappear when Zatanna was a child and how Zatanna might have turned out if she was raised by someone else for most of her life and how that might have affected her relationship with her Dad. What if she was raised by Madame Xanadu? Or Jason Blood? Or let's make it really bad and it was a villain like the Wizard or Felix Faust? How would her powers, costume and outlook on life be like?

Does dr.mist play a role in the headverse at all?
So Dr. Mist is really interesting because he's ten thousand years old with multiple names and identities across the eons, but more to the point his primary identity "Nommo" is a spirit in Dogon religion that represent a sort of merpeople, but also apparently are referred to as "Monitors" which, for my purposes, is fantastic. I love using translation conventions for narrative, so much in the same Looker is a type of Monitor, so is Nommo Balewa/Dr. Mist.
Nommo is much older tho and spent all his life on Earth, something that distinguishes him from the Knights of Sorrow or the Monitors proper, but also from the groups he is a part of: the Kor Empire and their possible Atlantean connections, the Homo Magi and their Houses of Mystery and Secrets, through to the modern day and contemporary superheroes and metahumans.
There's also the connection to the Haggard novel, She, which seems to have the same canonicity to Nommo's backstory that Wylie's Gladiator has to Iron Munro, and while there's not an existing Ayesha (tho ironically I have a headverse OC with that name), she could've been an Amazon or another Looker that figured into Nommo's origin.
As far as his modern day role, I'd say Nommo obviously would have been aware of Diana's society and possibly part of its broader structure, going on to form the Global Guardians/Leymen/Primal Force put leaving protest when they were hyper-militarized into the Ultramarine Corps, the spot that would've been his being filled by Lea Corben/4-D.
After that, he's invited into the League and works primarily with Dark Division on a day-to-day basis, with an additional advisory role to Diana, especially as they get closer to the Crisis.

Description She lived where the railway tracks met the saltpan, on the Ahri side of the shadowline. In the old days, when people still talked about her, she was known as the end-of-the-line woman.
Vasethe, a man with a troubled past, comes to seek a favor from a woman who is not what she seems, and must enter the nine hundred and ninety-nine realms of Mkalis, the world of spirits, where gods and demons wage endless war.
The Border Keeper spins wonders both epic—the Byzantine bureaucracy of hundreds of demon realms, impossible oceans, hidden fortresses—and devastatingly personal—a spear flung straight, the profound terror and power of motherhood. What Vasethe discovers in Mkalis threatens to bring his own secrets into light and throw both worlds into chaos.
