Fast Fashion resources

https://ehjournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12940-018-0433-7
Fast fashion, inexpensive and widely available of-the-moment garments, has changed the way people buy and dispose of clothing. By selling large quantities of clothing at cheap prices, fast fashion has emerged as a dominant business model, causing garment consumption to skyrocket. While this transition is sometimes heralded as the “democratization” of fashion in which the latest styles are available to all classes of consumers, the human and environmental health risks associated with inexpensive clothing are hidden throughout the lifecycle of each garment. From the growth of water-intensive cotton, to the release of untreated dyes into local water sources, to worker’s low wages and poor working conditions; the environmental and social costs involved in textile manufacturing are widespread.
Fast fashion is a term used to describe the readily available, inexpensively made fashion of today. The word “fast” describes how quickly retailers can move designs from the catwalk to stores, keeping pace with constant demand for more and different styles. With the rise of globalization and growth of a global economy, supply chains have become international, shifting the growth of fibers, the manufacturing of textiles, and the construction of garments to areas with cheaper labor. Increased consumption drives the production of inexpensive clothing, and prices are kept down by outsourcing production to low and middle-income countries (LMICs).
https://projectgreenchallenge.com/day-19-fashion/
“Take two very simple actions that we perform every single day: getting dressed and eating. Now start a journey backwards – to where your food and your clothes come from. At the other end, you will rarely find happy people, treated with dignity and respect. Human beings working at the bottom of any supply chain – whether it is strawberry picking, prawn fishing, cotton farming, garment workers – are often treated like slaves, without reference to our common humanity.  So “fashion” – i.e. what we wear every single day, has huge relevance and huge consequences on human, social and environmental capital.” ~ Livia Firth, Creative Director of Eco Age, Founder of Green Carpet Challenge, and Executive Producer of The True Cost
The project green challenge works to challenge you to look at your own shopping habits, what brands do you currently buy? Where do you shop? Are you participating in fast fashion? What changes can you make to become a sustainable shopper? I think it is important to acknowledge something before you can fix it, and as soon as we start acknowledging that we may not be making the best purchasing decisions we can each start creating a beneficial change.
https://www.vogue.com/article/sustainable-shopping-remake-no-new-clothes-campaign
The #NoNewClothes Pledge Encourages Brands to Center Their Sustainability Efforts Around Justice and Wellbeing
The idea around the campaign is to encourage followers to replace shopping the latest trends or buying from fast fashion brands with something smarter, whether that means stopping consumption of clothing entirely, using a swap or rental platform, upcycling, or buying vintage and consignment. Remake is asking participants to adhere to the challenge for the next 90 days. “We really think of this as a fashion diet,” Barenblat says. “What our community is saying is that we are going to take this challenge to reset our relationship with our closet, take stock of what we have and do so over the course of the summer.” Virtual mending workshops will be on offer, as well as others involving DIY dyeing and sewing. The organization is also asking its community members to share the looks they’ve been wearing, as well as host discussions around upcycling. “It’s supposed to be something fun for our community to do and not something prescriptive,” Barenblat notes. “The hope is that we will press pause on our purchases so that we can enter into the fall season and we’ll really understand how much we actually need.”

Day 4 of 366 #nonewclothes 100% #secondhand - even the socks (though I found them in a #thriftstore new with tags on). You'd be surprised how common it is to find new with tags socks at #thriftstores - these ones in particular look super cute poking out the top of boots, and they were $1.50! . . . This is the outfit I wanted to wear skating today, but it snowed. As adorable a #skaterskirt is, I chose practicality over fashion https://www.instagram.com/p/B66lZweh5vH/?igshid=7vuszkqf6n9z

I made the decision almost 3 months ago that I would join the #nonewclothes challenge — ending December 30th. And here is what I realized about myself. I’m changing, growing, ditching old habits, discovering new ones, decluttering my closet, appreciating the small things, looking forward to the NEW me . A lot of that is simply expressed through our clothes. I hope that I can bring the tiniest bit of inspiration to you for you . Soon to be 2021, things MUST change ✌️ #shopvintage #stylfndr . . . #vintagelover #nonewclothes #vintage #smallbusinessowner #sustainableliving #friday #preloved (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CI8mwlel-L0/?igshid=dabi4a8hog4l

Have you picked up some quarantine kilos? That is fine! Swipe for video instructions. To avoid buying new jeans when you eventually have to start wearing things that aren't elasticated - elasticate your jeans! Loop an elastic band or hair tie through your button hole and put the button through the new elasticated loop! You'll get an extra couple of centimetres in the waist and it's stretchy so it won't gape weirdly. 😁 #nonewclothes #nobuy #livingzerowaste #livingwithless #quarantinekilos #lockdownweightgain #bodypositivity #selflove #allbodiesaregoodbodies #allbodiesarebeautiful #livingmybestlife #lesswaste #lessstuff #buynothing #sustainability #sustainablefashion #ecofriendly (at County Meath) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAiiZ6rHaFB/?igshid=1a90rupw2jj14

early june 2020. this summer just seems to be filled with days that come slow and go fast.
the entirety of june was quite emotional for me; it was the end of a school year and a precursor to change. in all honesty, i was (and still am) terrified of the future. and that’s okay.
we’re all figuring out our own lives, one step at a time. don’t be afraid to go at your own pace; slow down, accelerate, or branch out. whatever feels right.
this summer, i dyed my hair, joined the #nonewclothes pledge, and learnt one song on the ukelele (i’m not very good at it, but it’s fun). despite all that, most days are late mornings and early nights, catching up with sleep and video calling my friends. for me, it’s enough.
what are you doing (or not doing) this summer?

lunar new year 🧧 恭喜發財! Happy Lunar New Year! Traditionally in my family, Chinese New Year is meant for coming together as a family over a big feast, wishing each other prosperity for the year to come, and of course, exchanging lai see. The color red is seen everywhere in Chinese homes this time of year in decorations and red envelopes because it symbolizes luck, good fortune, and happiness for the new year 🐅 #chinesenewyear #cny #chineseculture #lunarnewyear #yearofthetiger #恭喜發財 #vintage #acnestudios #reformation #nonewclothes #sustainablestyle #minimalstyle (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZcoasbvhuI/?utm_medium=tumblr

Day 11 of 366 #nonewclothes If you're ever looking for a fresh take on your wardrobe, I recommend letting someone else put an outfit together for you! Typically I ask my 4 year old to style me, but she went to visit her grandparents, so I asked my husband @allaboutsuspenders to put a couple of looks together for me, I think he did pretty well - what do you think? I'm definitely digging the #bohovibes . . . Vest $6 @calgarymccthriftshop Lace top is over 5 years old from @winsyyc (I don't recall how much it cost) White crop top $6 @valuevillage_thrift Jeans are over 8 years old - I believe they came from #valuevillage as well (also can't recall exactly how much they cost) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7MstfuBgiX/?igshid=1ct7bxiaxgfi

NO NEW CLOTHES
As you all may already know, I am a “ReMake Ambassador,” but what does that mean?
Well, one thing it means is that I joined the community in this years #nonewclothes campaign. Generally speaking, I don’t buy new clothing very often, and I don’t even buy #secondhand or new-to-me items that often – but I definitely like to pick up a new-ish item here and there. But I chose to interpret this challenge as not making apparel purchases.
However, I have allowed myself to make select items. I have recently jumped back into sewing during this low-key Spring/Summer, and I often use other garments or repurpose fabric for my projects – but, yes, I have purchased a few textiles, mostly from a local art salvage thrift store.
Okay, enough about that... But I wanted to share the motivation and thinking behind this surge in sew projects on the blog. I took a good look at my wardrobe and decided on some key pieces to make myself, and jumped off from there.
So, today I am sharing the @annaallen-clothing wide-leg Persephone pants — an Instagram sensation — and I made this pair with a black denim and a salvaged zipper and metal button. The process of sewing and creating my own clothing has given me a better appreciation of the time and work that garment workers put in to make things for us. It is a painstaking and time-consuming process that should be appropriately compensated, but brands often take advantage of the (mostly) women working in this industry. Sewing is something all clothing wearers should try if they can.
