one of my inquisitors (sumal) is mute and she does have an interpreter for all of her inquisition stuff, but now i’m thinking about the companions and sign language headcanons

most of what blackwall could sign came from his time in the military (came in handy especially during covert missions), but over time he develops his conversational lexicon more (in my worldstate it’s so he can communicate more efficiently with sumal because she romanced him and i’m garbage)

sera can definitely sign. being able to do so helped her immensely with her red jenny work, but of course she picked up on a few crude phrases here and there.

leliana can sign, there’s no question there.

josephine learned how to sign from her life as a bard, but she kept developing it and now she can sign as eloquently as she can speak.

cole can’t sign at first, but it’s a skill he picks up rather quickly to the point where he sometimes prefers it over verbal communication in some contexts.

(in my worldstate, he didn’t have to learn how to sign at first because he could “feel” what sumal was about to say before she got a chance to sign and it freaked her the fuck out.)

also i headcanon that sign language is much more prevalent in thedas, especially among dwarves (the silent sisters are shown using sign language so yeah?)

thanks to @cullenvhenan‘s help i’ve been able to make sumal’s saarebas scars a reality! it may not be the prettiest mod in existence, but it works and that’s all i need lol

but i need to give credit to the original saarebas scars mod, which inspired me to make sumal to begin with. it’s a beautiful mod, but i couldn’t get it to work with frosty unfortunately :(

Akaas, Shava, and Sumal were all adopted.

They all love their adoptive families and that’s all what matters to me rn (of course Shava can be a dramatic teenager at 21, but she still loves her family deep down)

i’m making it part of my canon that all of my inquisitors existed at the same time, but they die in the explosion at the conclave if they aren’t the inquisitor in that worldstate.

implications of this idea that bummed me out:

ahmose told akaas, his childhood best friend, about the conclave security job and encouraged him to take it.

in mihika’s worldstate, ahmose starts dating her after the events of trespasser.

which means that his girlfriend is the sole survivor of the explosion that killed his best friend.

hali storming through the ruins of the temple of sacred ashes, searching for sumal, her adopted daughter, and finding nothing.

iris never got to know that her older brother was at the conclave at the same time she was, but they were both killed together by the same explosion.

vekel was 1 day away from retirement

otho died believing that the templars and the chantry were right

ooh! i like this! i think i made an old post about this a while back, so i’l paste them here (+edits/updates if needed)

shava: she’s at a limp bizkit concert and she has backstage passes she’s back in denerim. the noble who killed her mother is behind the door. the warden has to convince her to suppress her desire for revenge and come with them.

talassan: he was able to return to his clan with luca. he knows he’s in the fade, but he wants to stay in a world where his son isn’t tranquil.

joyce: she also knows she’s in the fade. she’s having tea with the desire demon her father made a deal with. after asking the demon to tell her dad she said hi, she willingly leaves.

mirynn: she managed to bring her mother and sister with her to the surface and she made a good life for them. she doesn’t believe she’s in the fade. she only realizes it when her mother tells her not to do.

zaryn: they’re back in orzammar, trying to sleep in their old bed. maybe they took the sloth demon thing a bit too literally. they sleeps through the first half of the dwarf noble origin. their father storms in to yell at them, but he’s actually a demon. zaryn says “It’s like one of my japanese animes!” after killing him then leaves

natascha: she is queen. you may be asking, why was she considered for the throne? she says “don’t worry about it lol”. she lives up to her parents’ legacy by getting assassinated. as she’s dying, she manages to escape the demon’s hold.

kozda: she’s ruling orzammar as her queen. she’s married to gorim and everyone’s cool with that. suddenly, bhelen shows up and memories of being exiled begin to invade her mind, shattering the illusion. she is forced to kill the demon that took the form of gorim.

Mihika: “That top was an interesting choice” [The fear demon actually doesn’t say anything. He just sighs. It freaks her tf out]

Akaas: “Your mother could have left you on that shore, but she didn’t. Yet, you were so eager to leave her side to play hero. Do you miss her? Because the longer you’re here, the more she’s forgetting how to.”

Iris: “Do you think your Inquisition would still follow you if they know where you really came from, Iris? Are you foolish enough to think you can make up for what he has done? I can see his legacy in each spell you cast.”

Vekel: “Isn’t it funny how, once again, you’re trapped with an enemy you have no hope of defeating? Are you going to run away again?”

Otho: “Neither the insignia you wear nor the rhetoric you spit can conceal your blood. You will never be one - and they know it.”

Sumal: “Vinek kathas, Saarebas!”

hali: turns out that adopting a 7 ft tall teenage apostate would make your life more complicated

iris: one of quentin’s only good creations. also bats.

joyce: quentin’s other only good creation. also rats.

kozda: once upon a time there was a princess who was very pretty and everyone loved her and nothing bad happened to her ever. the end.

luca: even after his mind gets wiped, he still holds the only brain cell out of his group of friends.

mihika: used to be an anxious wreck in love with a god, but then she learned self love and now she has a beach house with her new man

mirynn: you seemed sad on facebook. now she’s at your front door with soup and cookies. please let her in.

natascha: claims she has a thing for “bad boys”, but really she has a thing for “the worst boys”

otho: my own creation copyright me don’t steel 100% original

shava: a freak explosion occurred at a spencer’s gifts and this is what climbed out

sorrel: even the amount of cigarettes she smokes won’t soften her heart

sumal: let’s hope most orlesian nobles can’t understand sign language or else they’d be very upset with her

talassan: your new dad and he’s inviting you to a backyard barbecue after he’s done dismantling the church

uaine: "i didn’t know how to tell you what i truly felt for you. so i went into the woods and took down this bear with my own hands in your honor. so...i’ll pick you up at 7?”

vekel: that scene from the simpsons where sideshow bob keeps stepping on rakes, but it’s his entire life.

vevari: *lounging on a beach in antiva* *veil explodes* *lowers sunglasses* “huh, glad that’s not my problem”

zaryn: *naruto-runs into the deep roads* “the darkspawn can’t touch me! not when i have the power of the stone and anime on my side!”

i wanted to ramble about my ocs’ musical talent

not all of these are canon to the dragon age universe

aminah: doesn’t play any instruments. claims to be a good singer, but only in the context of karaoke.

david: plays guitar (mostly blues). also a very good singer.

iris: she can play the organ and the waterphone. not at the same time. maybe if she’s feeling it.

joyce: electric harp. surprisingly good singer.

luca: played violin since he was a kid. after he becomes tranquil, he starts experimenting with the effects exposure to raw lyrium can have on music. he invents dubstep.

marjorie: harpsichord, but she gave up because she got sick of sitting down to play it.

mihika: drums, specifically the dholak. she likes to be able to move around and dance while she plays.

shava: electric guitar with lots of distortion.

sorrel: had to play piano since she could sit upright. she’s actually really good, but out of practice.

sumal: she learned to love the marimba. she has no rhythm, but she loves making noise.

talassan: drum. big drum. one big drum.

vekel: drumset. many drums of various sizes.

oc canon divergence

shava tabris: she was born in raised in the starkhaven elven alienage, but her arranged marriage brought her to ferelden. even though she was among strangers, she still felt compelled to defend the other elves who could have been her new family if she were allowed to stay. she wasn’t just defending ferelden as an elf, but as a foreigner too - which lead to some unique challenges, especially at the landsmeet.

mihika lavellan: her clan was primarily located in seheron, but she left to gather information at the divine conclave. she’s also a huge fangirl of the hero of ferelden and the champion of kirkwall. also she’s currently summering in rivain with her new boyfriend after disbanding the inquisition.

talassan mahariel: he left his clan at 18 to elope with a human woman he just met. it didn’t take long for the relationship to become rocky, but talassan stuck around so he could be with his son, luca. when luca was taken by the circle, talassan returned to his clan.

uaine hawke: uaine is chasind and they lived around the kocari wilds until the fifth blight. years before, their uncle, gamlen, left for the free marches to find fortune outside of the tribe. when the blight came, uaine and the remains of their family decided to seek him out. many nobles couldn’t have imagined that a chasind wilder would have accumulated the wealth and reputation to make a name for themselves in the noble class, but uaine managed to.

akaas adaar: he was taken in as a baby by a human rivaini woman who found him in a basket moses-style. his mother was a jeweler and akaas worked as a bouncer. their life was comfortable, until his mother’s arthritis made it difficult for her to continue working. in order to support his family, akaas accepted an incredibly lucrative job in guarding the divine conclave. doing so meant he would be leaving rivain for the first time in his life.

joyce amell: she was the daughter of quentin and revka amell - the latter being a noblewoman from the esteemed amell family in kirkwall, and the other being a weird apostate who ended up becoming a serial killer. joyce was born in kirkwall but was sent to ferelden when her magic was discovered. when she received a letter from her father, informing her that her mother had fallen ill, joyce realized she needed to be with her family. her attempt at escaping the tower lead to her exposing herself as a blood mage and getting conscripted into the grey wardens. she never did see her family again.

lena amell: she’s a hawke, but she took her mother’s last name to honor her.

iris amell: the youngest daughter of quentin and revka amell. she’s an amell, not a trevelyan. also despite what the in-game dialogue would have you believe, she loves sera and fully supports her.

aliz hawke: she’s half elven.

vekel cadash: he was originally in the legion of the dead, but he abandoned his rank when the hero of ferelden told him to follow his dreams.

natascha cousland: she’s dating nathaniel.

marjorie hawke: she’s an orlesian vigilante who dresses up like a clown and dances into battle.

otho trevelyan: he’s half elven, but he was raised by his mother’s dalish clan until the chantry found him and took him away. he was later conscripted into the templar order and learned to dismiss his elven heritage. his time as the inquisition’s leader lead him to question his chantry upbringing and learn to appreciate his dalish heritage.

zaryn aeducan: they’re such a weeb also they’re dating sigrun.

sumal: she’s a mute saarebas and her sign language interpreter/mom is here to help.
