currently i am in a very taz mood i suppose and im thinking about the ipre members naming their relics
taako, lup and barry all have relatively fancy names (the Philosophers Stone, the Phoenixfire Gauntlet, and the Animus Bell); magnus and merle both go for a little bit of embellishment but pretty much state it plainly (the Temporal Chalice and the Gaia Sash); and there is no embellishment when it comes to davenport and lucretias relics (the Oculus and the Bulwark Staff. like yeah, it sure is.)
do you think lucretia thinks about it? taako names his relic after a legend, of an incredibly powerful wizard. it is not easy to be a wizard. being a wizard is strict schools, is difficult work, is clawing your way to the top. taako and lup can hardly beg for enough scraps to fight over for dinner most days. no wizard worth their salt is going to give up their books to some random street kids, and even if they do, only lup knows how to read, between them. it's a lot of sneaking in and out and pestering and bothering and reading under the hazy light of candles they're not really supposed to have lit. it is years of extreme study of stolen books, years of exhaustive spell practise until taako's got dark spots in his vision and is still saying 'just one more try', years of clawing their way to the top. taako is one of the strongest wizards lucretia has ever known.
lup's relic is no question, of course; she has always loved fire, but barrys, on the other hand, well. barry is a man of science, of study, of experiments. barry is a human man. barry is a human man who is in love with an elf. the word animus does not imply death, but life. re-animation, and that's not really what's happening. barry's a lich, now, which makes him a prime target for lousy adventurers looking for easy money. he needs some way to keep himself alive. he needs some way to have hands, eyes, lips, some way to hold lup, some way to look at her, some way to smile at the way her voice goes all croaky in the early mornings. the animus bell, in barry's mind, is not a tool of death, but of renewed life. it was never intended for anyone who wasn't used to being remade.
when it comes to magnus, it's different. divination; magnus has no magical experience. he is a woodworker, a fighter, he's strong in everything he does, from lifting logs to loving others.
when lucretia thinks about the temporal chalice, she thinks about the cycles one, or most, of them died early. she thinks about that dreaded cycle, the entire year alone. she thinks about magnus' deep, powerful drive to protect. she remembers a study, from one cycle, that stated In the absence of higher knowledge, most or all sapient, rational beings will believe that other sapient, rational beings are extremely similar to them. she thinks about the temporal chalice, and magnus' drive to protect. how they never know what they're getting. the relief on his face, mixed with the worry, when lucretia collapsed against the edge of the starblaster, after her year alone.
ultimately the temporal chalice was used for its goal; to protect. just not in the way any of them had ever intended.

How do you feel about maurcretia (Maureen/Lucretia) and if the feelings are positive, Headcanons?
Ooh I've always kinda liked the idea that they were once in love.
Like I feel like they both have different kinds of insight on the world that would pair well together, and that it was mostly about creating the bureau at first, but slowly they grew to care for each other.
I imagine it's like Barry and Lup, where the most important part of what they do is the research and work and innovation, but there's something gentle and comforting in the background.
I think Lucretia would feel a lot of guilt as she felt those things, though. She would push Maureen away because what's more important is saving this plane and getting her family back. And how could she love with everything at stake?
Maybe they met after Lucretia escaped wonderland. Maureen wanted to know more about what happened and the science behind it all, especially the aging. And they worked together to build the lab, science and magic hand in hand, then again with the Bureau.
Maybe Lucretia would turn around sometimes while they were working, and look at Davenport. Because he was with her for those ten years before the reclaimers even came into question. I imagine she frequently broke down about what she had done to him- and Maureen caught her one time, and tried to comfort her, but Lucretia couldn't tell her what she was upset about.
When it came time for Taako, Magnus, and Merle to join, I think that's when she decided to push Maureen away for the best. It was easy, really, at least practically. She was spending all her time in her lab now, doing some sort of planar research? She was being cagey about it, but it's not like Lucretia complained; the less they spoke, the more she could focus on her mission and not her.
And then, Maureen passed away. Lucas was vague about it, which Lucretia understood because it was surely traumatic. She was heartbroken but kept her head up.
The discovery of the Gaia sash certainly helped her keep her mind off it-- and when the reclaimers returned and told her of their conversation with the red robe, that was a reminder of how crucial it was to get all the relics found. The red robe had called the thrall a hunger, and she remembered how powerful that thrall was. But people seemed to react to each relic in different ways. The Phoenix Fire Gauntlet was all-consuming, and the sash was mostly about the sheer power. But the Oculus hadn't even been used. Maybe the other few relics were being used more cleverly-- she hadn't heard anything about the philosopher's stone in a while, nor the temporal chalice. Maybe, just maybe, they were being used in more secretive ways.
She thought back to Maureen, and the last conversation they had. She had told Lucretia she was really close to a breakthrough, that she was suddenly able to make amazing discoveries... but she never explained how. Was it possible she had gotten ahold of a relic?
She was anxious about it until Lucas called her stone of far speech. He was annoying but he was like a son to her. However snotty he may be. But the news that he had the Philosopher's stone, and had been using it for months terrified her.
When the reclaimers relayed the events in the lab to her, Lucretia's heart shattered. One of the relics they had made killed the person she loved. And they killed her son too.
I think that this, and the reappearance of Barry, pushed her to double down on training. And she could see the signs of the hunger starting to make its way in. If they didn't hurry up, the hunger would take everyone else.
Well that rambling turned more into storytelling but yeah. I think they were tragically in love

17 for the writer ask game thingy?
From this ask game here! <- Feel free to send some in!! :D
17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.
Okay, so I basically wrote down all of the notes I have for The Man Who Became The Hunger in this ask here, so I'm just gonna talk about the Julia Survives Ravens Roost AU! :D
So, that first link that has the information about The Man Who Became the Hunger also has information about the Julia fic further down, and in that one, I talk about Julia possibly meeting Lich Barry before the Wonderland mission. Then this ask talks about Julia’s relationship with Leon and the story behind my decision to make her Fighter then multiclass into artificing after Petals to the Metal. I don’t think I’ve made any other posts going in depth talking about it, so some new stuff!!
(I almost wrote down everything I have planned so far that is definitely going to end up in the text, and I can’t give all my secrets away, plus I realized that wasn’t the prompt lol :3 )
I’m not sure of what things are and are not going to end up being in the text, but some details that I do want to point out is that whenever Magnus used to talk about his past or tries to think about it, he would get this far away look in his eyes and just stay silent for a while before someone brought him back to the present, and that happened less and less the more time he spends on Faerun, but since meeting Merle and Taako again and then getting on with the rest of the adventure, Julia notices he starts getting that far away look more often again, and that it happens to Merle, Taako, and Davenport too.
Also, Julia had two childhood best friends whom, during the Relic Wars, Kalen had sent out with a couple of other people to find the Oculus, and she never heard from them again. I had names for them, but I guess I didn’t save them, so now I have to pick new names lol But one of them is a tiefling girl and the other one is a dwarven boy. I don’t have an idea of how exactly they died, but I do know that they did die, and Julia’s never going to know what happened to them. I do know they never actually got a hold of the Oculus though.
Julia’s mother died when she was a kid, and Steven never really dated anyone else, but they were really close to the other people in the Craftsmen Corridor, so while it was just the two of them, Julia grew up with a lot of people which is going to make turning down the Chalice’s offer to stop Kalen and save her dad and her town a lot harder. I’m also going to keep the characters I made up that are residents in Ravens Roost that I either referenced or wrote about in other fics the same.
I still don’t know what the Chalice is going to offer Magnus. It might also be saving Ravens Roost because he did grow close to the people living there and that’s the last place he felt like he was home, plus it would mean a lot to Julia, but I don’t know if I necessarily want to give them the same offer. I don’t know what else I’d offer Magnus though, so we’ll see.
Maurcretia is canon, and the reason Lucretia and Maureen stopped talking is because they had an argument about the ethics of erasing someone’s entire life from their friends and family the first time someone in the Bureau dies, and people started asking questions and Lucretia decided that erasing them had to become a thing. This is definitely probably not going to show up in the story except Maureen does ask Julia to tell Lucretia that she’s sorry and she loves her before she leaves with Kravitz.
Magnus, Merle, and Taako all speak a version of Common that only exists in their plane, and Julia only knew that Magnus spoke it which he remembers he knows it from where he grew up, but not much past that. Tres horny bois found out they all speak it at some point when Julia’s not there, so when they’re fighting Trent the treant in Petals to the Metal, and Merle tells Magnus to chop Trent, he says it in their version of Common, which is how Julia finds out that they speak it too. Everyone says they know it from their home town. No one has the capability of making the connection that they are all from the same place.
I can’t think of any other details right now that aren’t exclusively going to end up happening in the text, but I know that a lot of my ideas that I have now and in the future are going to end up getting written because this fic is basically my play box that I’m eventually going to let people watch me play in lmao I know I need to get the campaign part of the fic written first, but I’m debating whether or not I want to continue it after Story and Song and whether it’s going to be in the same fic or if I’m just going to make it a series on AO3 lol
Edit: I forgot, Lucretia tells them that there’s only 6 relics instead of 7 because that way when they collect the animus bell, they think that’s the last one and that Taako’s argument for going through with breaking into Lucretia’s vault about how they were out of a job actually makes sense. While I was listening the through the podcast the first time around, I was mentally screaming at them that just because Griffin said it was the last arc didn’t mean that there wasn’t still a seventh object and that while I agreed that they needed to figure out what was in the vault, saying they were out of a job wasn’t a valid argument alsdkhgdlhg
It still really bothers me, so I fixed it lmao

And so it drew its plan to escape not only this ephemeral cage of non-existence, but even the very reality into which they might break, and it chose its fool: The Great Eye, the most unwise of all the fragments, forever seeking and consuming knowledge that it could not comprehend. It played and twisted and through The Eye brought about a new world, a wide and unending vista of terror and agony, and the place from which it might spread, and spin another web far grander than anything conceived of in the minds that birthed it.

I want to do a bunch of art for Pokémon Oculus aka my TMA Pokémon AU but I have art burnout and finals in two weeks so here have a writing snippet instead:
It is dark, and Martin is cold.
Thick icy fog billows at his feet, creeping into his lungs, fluttering from his lips every time he exhales.
Faintly, it occurs to him that he can’t remember the last time he felt warm.
The cold is all that he feels. The cold, and the sense that something is deeply, deeply wrong.
That feeling of wrongness only grows as the fog begins to rise, lapping at his legs. Something is missing. Martin knows it, deep within his chilled bones. He just can’t remember what it is.
In the distance, a voice calls for him. It’s so achingly familiar, and Martin feels his frozen heart begin to pound in his chest, glasslike shards of ice and fear stabbing at his lungs. The fog is at his neck now.
He opens his mouth to call out—
Only for the blaring of his alarm to yank him abruptly into consciousness.
Martin’s eyes fly open, and he immediately slams them shut again, groaning. He raises his hand to shield his eyes from the blade of blinding sunlight leaking through the gap in the hotel room curtains.
He flings his other arm out, groping for his phone. He grabs ahold of it and shuts off the alarm, rolling onto his back and sighing. Another nightmare, then. Nearly four years and they haven’t gotten any better. If Martin’s being completely honest with himself, they probably never will.
He notices he’s shivering.
Martin shuts his eyes again and lays there for the next several minutes, waiting for the tremors racking his body to subside. As soon as his breath no longer shudders when he exhales, he sits up, blinking his poor, jet-lagged eyes.
He checks the time on his phone. 7:41 AM. Just under two hours until his appointment with Professor Sycamore.
He drags himself out of bed and gets dressed, then makes his way to the bathroom to freshen up. Once he deems himself presentable, he begins gathering his things and pulls open the curtains, flooding the room with sunlight.
Galvantula makes a disgruntled noise from where she’s still asleep at the foot of the bed, blinking open her eyes.
“Morning, Galvantula,” Martin greets her. She yawns and stretches, clicking her chelicerae together sleepily. She chitters affectionately when Martin gives her a few pets on her fuzzy head.
“C’mon, let’s get going.” Martin chuckles, slinging his bag over his shoulder. “The others are probably already downstairs.”
Galvantula stretches one last time then scuttles off the bed, and the two of them make their way out of their hotel room and down to the lobby.

The Director: You have just destroyed another incredibly powerful relic. That relic was imbued with impossible illusion magic. It’s called the Oculus. Rift. No.  It’s just called the Oculus. And it-- it is able to turn anything you create with illusion magic into something real. Into something tangible.
Magnus: But that sounds great!
The Director: It’s really great - unless you use it to conjure an illusory army or some sort of illusory dragon. Or an illusory black hole that then destroys the world.
Merle: Not seein’ a downside.

Barry Bluejeans wasn’t a smart man. He wasn’t a strong man either. He didn’t have much skill in dexterity and he had no deep connection to nature and he certainly wasn’t blessed with any divine intervention.
He was, by all accounts, just Barry.
Which wouldn’t have been a problem, except he was trying to help people save the world here.
When they were all taken up to the moon base after Phandalin he didn’t really get a chance to object. To explain that he wasn’t actually a fighter, he couldn’t do anything. The director had been so insistent on having them all as reclaimers, and he didn’t know how to say no. No one brought up the fact that he had been useless during Phandalin’s destruction, and he really did his best to try and train before the next mission.
He’d been just as useless on the train though. Even more so, because he didn’t even have a big piece of sharp metal to flail at enemies. The only one who really brought it up was that kid.
“Uh sir, do you think you could, I don’t know, help them?” Angus had asked as Magnus, Merle, and Taako fought a giant crab. It was fair, Barry was a part of their group, and he was just standing back with the literal child and unconscious man.
“How?” he asked, the kid giving him an incredulous look at that.
“Well, what are you?” he prompted. Barry had to pull himself away from watching Taako levitate the crab into the air with a skill of magic he couldn’t help but be jealous of.
“I’m just... Barry.”
They got the oculus, but Magnus had nearly died jumping off the train. The Director was pretty clear that these missions would only get more and more dangerous, and they had managed to get to the thing before it was even used this time. Maybe next time they wouldn’t be so lucky. As far as he was concerned, it was pretty obvious what needed to happen.
He couldn’t stand around being just Barry anymore.
It took a while to figure out, and for a while he considered just asking Taako to teach him magic. If he hadn’t managed to pick up any at his age though, he doubt he’d get it now. No, the more he looked into this, the more right it felt.
He didn’t have his own power, but he could get power. He could ask for it, and if he was lucky, someone might actually answer.
The temple was small, in the middle of a cemetery. There wasn’t anyone around right now, the sun setting softly behind him. It had said sunset, the transition between day and night was the best time to try and contact her.
Laying out five black raven feathers in a circle, Barry took a deep breath, and stated to pray.
“Uh, hello? I don’t- I’m gonna be honest, I don’t really know what I’m doing here,” he began, feeling a little ridiculous as he spoke. As if a god would actually listen to him because he got some feathers and sat in front of an old statue. Still, he forced himself to continue. “My name is Barry Bluejeans, and I need your help, Raven Queen, if uh, if you’ll allow it?”
“I’m just, I’m useless on my own. My new friends though, they’re doing everything they can to save this world, and I want to help. I at least don’t want to get my ass killed on one of these missions. Like, no offense, I know death is kinda your thing, but it’s- there’s a balance, right? If everything dies, that’s no good for you. I just, I want to keep that from happening,” he continued. The longer he went the more... pointless this all felt. He wasn’t going to get an answer, a god wasn’t going to point a finger at him and grant him power.
And then there was a crack of thunder like the world was tearing itself apart, and as Barry scrambled back the large stone raven at the top of the statue moved.
‘You dare beseech me for power?’ the Raven Queen boomed, and the stone raven didn’t open its mouth but Barry could tell that she was speaking through it. She sounded pissed. He was more than a little terrified as he nodded.
“Y-yeah. I just... I just want to help,” he insisted. Barry was pretty sure the statue did not originally have individually carved feathers, but that didn’t seem to matter as they puffed up in clear rage.
“Help?! And how could one so corrupted possibly help?” she asked, and Barry blinked, his frown deepening in confusion.
“That’s why I’m asking you. I’m powerless on my own, but if you helped me I might be able to at least keep my friends alive long enough to do some good,” he tried. The stone creature continued to stare down at him, a clear indignant rage in her. “Did... did I do something wrong?” he asked after a moment.
And something about that actually seemed to give the god pause.
The bird’s head cocked to the side, and Barry had already been knocked basically onto his back. He tensed up as she flew down, landing roughly on his chest. What had once been crude stone eyes were shining gemstones that stared into his own. Although honestly he was more focused on the beak, thinking about how stone or not, it would probably do a pretty good job of removing his eyes if she wanted to.
“You are... genuine,” she said after an agonizingly long moment. It wasn’t a question, but Barry quickly nodded.
“Yeah! I’m sorry, I don’t know what I did to offend you, your uh, majesty. But I swear I just want to fix this,” he insisted. The goddess was quiet for a long time.
The noise she ended up making was rather terrifying, but Barry was pretty sure it was a laugh.
“Very well! Intriguing. Understand your end of the deal well lost revenant. Your soul belongs to the astral plane, for this power you shall do as I see fit,” she said, and that should probably be more worrying than Barry felt. He had been pretty sure she was going to kill him a moment ago, so he was feeling pretty good.
“Yeah, sounds good. I mean, that’s how it would be when I died anyway, so no skin off my bones,” he said. Again the Raven Queen laughed, like there was some joke here he wasn’t quite getting, and nodded. Jumping off his chest, the bird flew back up to the top of the statue.
“Then I shall grant you this power you seek. Use it well, Barry Bluejeans,” she declared. Without another word the bird shifted back into that unmoving, crude form on top of the temple. A pressure that had been suffocating around him before was gone, but Barry could still feel a change. Like a swirling mass of sardonic power in his chest.
Holding up a hand, he managed to channel that power into a blast of purple-blue arcane energy into the air, which exploded with a loud bang. A little stunned, Barry pushed himself up to his feet, trying to process what just happened.
He was a warlock of the Raven Queen now.
Cool.

Retribution
Hello! This was my entry for the Cold Open Stories monthly flash fiction contest with the theme of personal vendettas.
I decided to use one of the most famous rivalries in 40k lore between the Space Wolves and Thousand Sons. The story is set during the Siege of the Fenris System in the final days of M41, when Magnus the Red and his followers invaded the worlds of the Sons in Russ in retribution for the razing of Prospero during the Horus Heresy.
My story wasn't chosen by the COS judges for publication, but I'm still proud of it!

It is impossible to tell where reality ends and the Immaterium begins. The veil between dimensions is not just torn but tattered. The Architect of Fate is the undeniable master of the arcane arts, and his daemonic host is likewise skilled. They overrun the battlefield in dazzling sublimity, scorching the land with the coruscating fires of change.
With these infernal beings march my brothers and me. We are neither mortal nor monster, but warriors, once crusaders for human supremacy. We now fight for ourselves. Our motives are as many as the warbands present at this siege. We each have our reasons for being here. I can only speak for mine.
The Rubicae under my command advance with determined gaits, firing their relic bolters into the enemy ranks. They have no motives or minds of their own, only blind acceptance of my will. Ahriman turned them to soulless husks eons ago. I will make that wrong right too. But one vendetta at a time.
I know this pack of Wolves. I know their heraldry. I search for a familiar face. Granite-hewn features. Icy blue eyes. Braided tawny hair. A tattoo of runes on his forehead.
I have thought of this face for hundreds of thousands of years. I care nothing for the corpse sitting atop the throne on Terra. I do not seek the gifts and favours of Dark Gods. For me there was never a Long War or a Black Crusade. Just that face, forever burned into my memory, and revenge.
I see him. His hair is no longer tawny but grey. His left eye is now a red-glowing oculus implant. His face is still stone but heavily scarred. The tattoo of runes on his brow is now one part of an elaborate pictorial story running across his cheeks, jaw, and neck. He wears an immense charcoal-coloured wolfskin over his pauldrons. He locks his azure eyes on me, my face obscured behind the distinctive headgear of my legion. I sense no recognition on his part. A shame.
I point at him. “You.”
He hears me, even over the din of combat around us. The faces of his nearby brothers appear as bewildered as his does.
“On Tizca you slaughtered my mentor. A teacher and a friend. Today you answer for that. What is your name, dog?”
The warrior does not hesitate. “Rurik Fangs-First!”
“Know that Qadim Abydos is the one to kill you.”

He charges me before I remove my sword from its sheath. It is the blade of a sorcerer, intricately engraved with the glyphs of a long-dead language, the rare jewels in its hilt conduits of fell energies. Rurik hefts his two-handed axe and brings it down in a pulverizing arc. I parry the blow, the axe sizzling against the power field encasing my weapon. It takes all my concentration to resist the momentum behind the strike.
Rurik laughs. His aura is the same as it was over one thousand years ago on Prospero: unthinking brutality, a killer instinct. But it is the laugh that clinches it. That throaty, jeering laugh of contempt. This is the Wolf, to be certain.
I expect him to pull away, to back up and swing again. Instead, he keeps his weight of his axe upon my sword and kicks me square on my breastplate, causing me to stagger back.
I send images to his mind, memories I have relived over and over. My life as an aspirant, then my initiation into the XV Legion. My commander, my teacher, Xorias Typhon. As Tizca falls, he buys my brothers and I time to escape. To our shame we run, leaving him to die, cut down to the sound of Rurik’s laugh. I turned, and the Wolf’s face was the last thing I saw before the Crimson King transported us to sanctuary.
From then to this moment, from the burning of Prospero to the siege of Fenris, I have hunted him through the stars. At last, we meet again. I show Rurik all this through my psychic power, and slowly he understands the story I weave.
His face is contorted with rage. “Out of my head!”
“Xorias Typhon!” I cry.
He lets out a guttural grunt as he swings his axe wildly. Even with the distance between us I almost fail to dodge it.
“His name was Xorias Typhon!”
I can tell he is not listening. He is consumed by fury.
As he starts to run toward me, I begin to chant as I run a hand over my sword. A malign intelligence slowly awakens in the blade, which begins to radiate with a cerulean light.
Rurik freezes mid-stride. His every molecule is stuck in place, succumbed to an arcane paralysis rendering him helpless. A spectre emerges from my blade, a ghostly mass of twisting flesh and limbs. It lets out a psychic shriek that leaves me deafened before it swirls smoke-like around Rurik, gradually sifting through his mouth, nostrils, and ears.
I am grateful the Wolves tend to forgo their helms in battle, for it also means I can watch the confusion in his eyes. Astartes may know no fear, but Rurik demonstrates that we are capable of shock. I sense him searching for meaning as he becomes host to a being he does not comprehend, an eldritch wraith even older and more powerful than he, me, or any other of our kind. I have not just killed him; I have made his body host to a creature of Chaos, and a powerful one at that.
Rurik contorts and writhes, his body bulging and breaking underneath his armour. Soon the ceramite cracks, and Rurik is no longer Rurik, but a bulk of obscene and monstrous anatomy. Insane and mindless, he roars as he rampages among the Wolves.
I care not what comes. Fenris may fall. Terra may burn. Our war goes on. But I know this: I have had my retribution.
