Oil pulling is a traditional Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing oil in the mouth for several minutes to improve oral health. While coconut oil is commonly used for oil pulling, there are several other oils that can provide additional benefits. In this blog post, we will explore the benefits of oil pulling with peppermint oil, oregano oil, and lavender oil. I do my oil pulling with coconut oil as a carrier oil.
1. Peppermint Oil:
Peppermint oil is well-known for its refreshing and cooling properties. When used for oil pulling, it can provide several benefits for oral health. Firstly, peppermint oil has antimicrobial properties that can help kill harmful bacteria in the mouth, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease. It also has a pleasant taste and aroma, making the oil pulling experience more enjoyable. Additionally, peppermint oil has a natural analgesic effect, which can help alleviate toothaches and reduce oral discomfort.
2. Oregano Oil:
Oregano oil is a powerful natural antimicrobial agent. It contains compounds such as carvacrol and thymol, which have been found to exhibit strong antibacterial and antifungal properties. When used for oil pulling, oregano oil can help eliminate harmful bacteria, fungi, and viruses in the mouth, promoting better oral hygiene. It can also help reduce bad breath and prevent the formation of plaque and tartar. Oregano oil is particularly beneficial for individuals with oral infections or gum disease.
3. Lavender Oil:
Lavender oil is widely known for its calming and soothing properties. While it may not have direct antibacterial effects like peppermint or oregano oil, it can still provide benefits when used for oil pulling. Lavender oil has a pleasant scent and taste, which can help freshen breath and provide a relaxing experience during oil pulling. Additionally, lavender oil has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce gum inflammation and promote healthier gums.
Incorporating these essential oils into your oil pulling routine can enhance the overall benefits of this practice. To perform oil pulling with these oils, simply add a few drops of the desired oil to a tablespoon of coconut oil (or any other carrier oil of your choice) and swish the mixture in your mouth for about 10-15 minutes. Be sure to spit out the oil after swishing and rinse your mouth thoroughly with water.
It is important to note that oil pulling should not replace regular brushing and flossing, but rather be used as a complementary practice. If you have any specific oral health concerns or conditions, it is always recommended to consult with a dentist or healthcare professional before incorporating oil pulling into your routine.
Oil pulling is primarily known for its benefits on oral health, but it can also have indirect effects on gut health. Here are some potential benefits of oil pulling on gut health:
Oral Microbiome Balance: Oil pulling helps remove harmful bacteria from the mouth, including the ones that can cause dental issues and gum disease. By reducing the bacterial load in the mouth, it may prevent the spread of harmful bacteria to the gut through swallowing. This can help maintain a healthier balance of bacteria in the gut.
Reduced Inflammation: Oil pulling has been found to reduce inflammation in the mouth and gums. Chronic inflammation in the mouth can lead to systemic inflammation, which can affect the gut as well. By reducing oral inflammation, oil pulling may indirectly help reduce gut inflammation.
Improved Digestion: Good oral health is essential for proper digestion. When the mouth is healthy, it produces sufficient saliva, which contains enzymes that aid in the breakdown of food. Oil pulling can help maintain oral health, ensuring optimal saliva production and promoting better digestion.
Detoxification: Oil pulling is believed to have detoxifying effects by pulling toxins and impurities from the mouth. While there is limited scientific evidence to support this claim, it is possible that reducing the toxin load in the mouth may have a positive impact on overall gut health.
Stress Reduction: Oil pulling can be a relaxing and meditative practice. Stress has been linked to gut health issues, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). By reducing stress levels, oil pulling may indirectly support better gut health.
It's important to note that the direct impact of oil pulling on gut health is not extensively studied, and more research is needed to fully understand its effects. Oil pulling should not be considered a standalone solution for gut health issues. It is always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and treatment options for gut-related concerns.
Happy Healing!🪷

Be mindful with oil pulling if you have fillings! You can still use this inexpensive and helpful technique for overall wellness, mouth hygiene, and detoxifying, but just be careful to be gentle while swishing (”pulling”) the oil.

10 Effective Home Remedies For Bad Breath
Bad breath, or halitosis, can be an embarrassing and uncomfortable condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It is often caused by poor oral hygiene, but can also be a sign of a more serious underlying issue. While there are many commercial products that claim to fight bad breath, they can be expensive and often contain harsh chemicals. Fortunately, there are many effective and natural home remedies for bad breath that can freshen your breath and improve your oral health.
Here are 10 effective home remedies for bad breath.
1. Water One of the simplest and most effective home remedies for bad breath is drinking water. Lack of hydration could be one of the reasons behind your bad breath, as it causes the mouth to dry out and reduces saliva production. This can lead to an increase in bacterial growth, resulting in an unpleasant odor. Drinking plenty of water ensures that your mouth stays hydrated and flushes out all the harmful bacteria that cause bad breath. To maximize the benefits of water for bad breath, try drinking it after meals and throughout the day. You should aim to drink at least eight glasses of water every day to maintain good oral health and fresh breath.
2. Yogurt Yogurt contains probiotics that help balance the bacteria in the mouth. The good bacteria in the yogurt fight the bad bacteria that cause bad breath. Simply eat a cup of plain yogurt daily or swish it around your mouth for a few seconds before swallowing to help freshen your breath. Make sure you choose a plain and unsweetened variety, as sweetened yogurts can actually contribute to bad breath.
3. Green Tea Not only is green tea a great source of antioxidants, but it also has natural breath-freshening properties that can help combat odor-causing bacteria in your mouth. To make your own at-home remedy, simply steep a bag of green tea in hot water for a few minutes before letting it cool to room temperature. Gargle the tea like mouthwash for about 30 seconds and spit it out. The catechins in the tea will work to kill bacteria and leave your breath smelling fresh and clean. Plus, this trick is easy, affordable, and eco-friendly compared to other commercial mouthwashes full of synthetic chemicals.
4. Chew on Cloves Cloves have been used for centuries to combat halitosis, and with good reason. Not only do they have a refreshing aroma that helps mask any unpleasant smells in your mouth, but they also contain eugenol, which kills off bad bacteria responsible for producing odor. Simply chew on a few cloves after a meal to freshen your breath. You can also add cloves to your tea or use clove oil as a mouthwash.
5. Oranges Oranges are not just tasty fruits, they also offer home remedies for bad breath. The acidic content in oranges helps to combat the bacteria causing bad breath. Eating oranges can help to stimulate saliva production, which helps to wash away the bad smell. Plus, the high vitamin C content in oranges also promotes good oral health by strengthening gums and preventing gum disease. Simply peel an orange and eat it as a snack or squeeze its juice into a glass of water to drink throughout the day. Another option is to mix together equal parts of orange juice and warm water, swish it around in your mouth for 30 seconds, and spit it out.
6. Tea Tree Oil Rinse Tea tree oil has antiseptic properties that can help kill bacteria in your mouth, which is often a cause of bad breath. It also has a pleasant scent that can cover up any lingering odors. Simply add a few drops of tea tree oil to warm water and use it as you would mouthwash. Just be sure not to swallow the mixture, as tea tree oil can be toxic if ingested in large amounts.
7. Baking Soda If you're looking for an easy and affordable way to freshen your breath, baking soda might be the answer. This common household ingredient is alkaline and can help neutralize the acids in your mouth that cause bad breath. To use it as a remedy, simply mix a teaspoon of baking soda with water to create a paste and then brush your teeth and tongue with it for about two minutes. You can also dissolve some baking soda in a glass of water and use it as a mouthwash. Just be careful not to overdo it, as using too much baking soda can be harmful to your teeth enamel.
8. Oil Pulling with Coconut Oil Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing oil around in your mouth to remove toxins and bacteria. Coconut oil is a popular choice for oil pulling because it has antimicrobial properties that can help kill bacteria that cause bad breath. Swish a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for 15-20 minutes before spitting it out and rinsing your mouth with water.
9. Chewing Gum One simple solution is to grab a piece of chewing gum after meals or whenever your mouth feels particularly stale. Chewing gum can help stimulate saliva production, which can help wash away bacteria and food particles that cause bad breath. Look for sugar-free gum with xylitol, which can also help to neutralize odors in the mouth. Choosing sugar-free gum is important, as sugar can actually contribute to bad breath. Just be careful not to chew gum excessively, as this can lead to jaw pain or other problems.
10. Tongue Scraper This handy tool helps remove bacteria and debris from the surface of your tongue, which is often the culprit behind unpleasant breath. Simply scrape your tongue gently from back to front once or twice per day after brushing your teeth to help freshen your breath. You can find simple metal or plastic scrapers at most drugstores or online retailers, and they typically cost only a few dollars.

a bit late to this .. let me explain .. I spent 10 hours in A&E yesterday .. because I was in a hospital I wasn’t allowed to vape .. ridiculous I know! so I have noticed a decline in flavours and yesterday when I finally got to have a puff .. INTENSE .. is what it was .. so I’m thinking ‘ah good old vape fatigue right?’ and that’s where I was wrong .. my taste buds in fact have been reinstated by something else I did yesterday before I left for Musgrove .. #oilpulling .. sounds like something you should do with a big Diesel engine on a drag strip yeah .. or something you should do with Vin Diesel wearing a dress .. hang on .. him or me .. trust me I look rubbish in a dress and big old Vin .. I reckon he would look weirder .. no in fact it’s the simple act of pulling oil through your teeth to remove bacteria .. you take a spoonful of coconut oil and suck it through your teeth and swish it around your mouth for 10 to 20 minutes .. I’m somewhat restricted by having perennial rhinitis which makes it hard to breath through my nose .. so I have to take the occasional gulp of air .. but it actually works .. it also helps to keep your mouth hydrated (PG and VG cause dry mouth .. which encourages bacteria .. so your own bad breath taints everything you taste .. so Unicorns are go :/) DISCLAIMER: unlikely to restore your taste buds if you have COVID (at Glastonbury, Somerset, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CkDcknXsU4s/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
