I feel like sex unlocks a new Noah. Let's face it, we don't like it but Noah surely is emotionally constipated. I think his sex drive is really random. It can be a week of random quickies or like more intimate sex multiple times a week. Often it's a mix of both but it depends on the schedule you know.

Either fall asleep immediately or won't be able to sleep because you guys talked for hours and now he is overthinking about why he overshared like that. What if you don't like him in the morning because he said too much? (it won't happen but this dude is a little psychotic.)

nobody asked but since I've seen a lil chatter on the DCTL Graphic Novel on tumblr too, here's the thread I posted on twitter, speaking as someone who's done a little freelance work as a comic artist, under the jump:
Main thought about the DCTL graphic novel preview is: yeah, I've made designs like that when I was being paid by the page and expected to just throw in extra design work for free and I have a deadline and no time to scour the source material or really put my heart into the design No shade to the artist; every complaint I have about the pages we've seen is that this looks like someone who was just working (quickly) from a script. The artist is likely not a Big Fan, so they only know the info and descriptions they're given. And the artist's portfolio shows they're capable of the kind of designs and dynamics this comic needed. its possible they phoned it in for no reason, but feels more likely to be "not enough time/not paid enough/not given enough info to give it that level of care." Which, don't get me wrong; an important level of craftsmanship and care is missing and im not gonna blame the artist but i AM gonna be a hater abt it lmao It's not just about designs; the convo with Joey is another good example. It's a literal illustration of the things Joey said and did in that scene, but it's missing the point -- that scene is our introduction to the way Joey throws Buddy off-balance. That energy is missing. And that's the sort of thing that needs the script to convey this purpose well to the artist, that needs the artist to have time & freedom to invest in portraying it, that needs time & investment & knowledge to ask for adjustments at early stages and get the page right one more note: begging batim fans 2 think abt the plot of DCTL and realise why "maybe we will not make the creepy guy who dies at the end a black man in this" is perhaps a reasonable choice. like im a fan of poc norman headcanons too but pls recognise this would be a tough call!! anyway, genuinely cannot wait to see how off sammy is gonna be in this lmao. will he be a mid non-design like norman or will he be conventionally handsome or will he get graphic novel dave miller vibes b/c hes an antagonist? will we get the fabled black hair sammy??? i cant wait
TL;DR I strongly suspect this was an issue of not enough time/not enough money. That design looks nothing like the description of Norman, right? Like, there's hundreds of different AU designs of all shapes, colours and sizes that you could create that would still look like Norman Polk, but somehow they managed to make a character that isnt ANY of them, lmao??? So... how could that happen, unless nobody gave the artist a description of Norman? Or if they did, how did that design make it past anyone else, unless there wasn't time for revisions or a system worked out for revisions, unless whoever was managing the comic project thought it was fine if the designs didn't fit with the descriptions in the book? If everyone is doing their job, then the artist is given the information they need without having to go do unpaid YA novel research before they can start drawing. That's why you have a writer adapting it!!
("they should hire fans, a fan would've done a better job" OK BUT THATS B/C FANS ARE MORE LIKELY TO ALLOW THEMSELVES TO BE EXPLOITED AND DO EXTRA UNPAID WORK B/C THEY CARE!! THATS NOT A SOLUTION!!!! THATS A JOEY DREW STRAT!!!!!!!)
Anyway I could yell about this for 15 years so I'm going to shush for now BUT I JUST FEEL VERY STRONGLY ABOUT IT LMAO.

Finally get to post my Clara doodles! : )

Ok, i should probably explain a little more about Clara before i go any farther. (i'll put it under a break b/c, most likely, it will be long)
Clara is, essentially, Donnie's adopted daughter. She's not biologically related to the boys in any way. Donnie found her, unhatched, and brought her back to an incubator he had set up in his lab specifically for her.
(i couldn't see Donnie, who hates his powers, going out of his way to create the next Seer. He would rather risk breaking the cycle or whatever than create a child specifically for such a purpose. But, if he found the child who was going to be their replacement, he would not leave them to die. or worse, risk them surviving and growing up without the safety of the vault or someone to explain their powers.)
Donnie found her at a zoo, where a very dedicated zookeeper had been doing their best to take care of what animals they could. One of which was a pair of Indian Peacock Softshell turtles who had laid eggs, one of which got mutated by a leftover oozqueito before ever hatching. That would soon be Clara. Donnie showed up the day the zookeeper died, collected her, and brought her back to the lab so she would continue to grow.
Donnie did consider her to be his child, even though he knew he would never properly meet her. He spent a lot of time searching through visions, watching her grow up in the only way he could. He insured she would want for nothing. Knowledge, gear, whatever he could foresee her needing, he made sure it was ready for her. just as he did for the rest of his family. (he might hate his Seer powers, but he couldn't deny they were useful when it came to preparing for his death)
So Clara grew up in the care of her Uncles (mostly Leo but Mikey and Raph definitely helped) as well Cass and April. (She actually calls Cass, Mama Casey b/c that's what CJ calls her. Also b/c, early on, her visions would upset her to the point where only being around CJ would calm her down. So Cass said that if she was going to watch them at night this often, she was claiming Clara as her kid too. Thus she did.)
Clara and CJ's powers strengthened pretty early (apocalypse does that). It upset her at first, but as time went on, she got tired of crying over it and decided to be angry at them. Her standard way of dealing with bad visions as a teen, was to beat up a training dummy until she either felt marginally better and then sought out CJ, or until CJ found her there.
personality wise, Clara is loud and brash. she is also snarky as hell and has little to no verbal filter. (she's essentially an 03 or 12 Raph lol) She absolutely hates feminine clothing with a passion and whenever Mikey or Raph tried to dress her up as a child, she and CJ would switch clothes as soon as the two looked away.
i think that's it for now? i can't think of anything else really. Other than maybe that i've figured out a way i could add her character (minus the seer powers) to the cannon apocalypse without upsetting the plot much. But i'm not sure i'm going to do it since it's very tragic and i'm not sure i want to put Donnie through that.

This was may more satisfying than I was expecting! It was completely unfair how easily the Fire Nation ladies defeated Sokka & Katara so getting Appa'd was a nice payoff.

No disability unmocked this episode. Also nice stance from the lizard.
This whole scene with Toph and Iroh has the most beautiful backgrounds. I sense phone wallpapers in my future.
Forget about the visuals, every line of this exchange was golden. Two towering pillars of wisdom and emotional maturity meet for tea and not a soul goes untouched. Also a nice moment of calm in an otherwise frantic episode.
Can this PLEASE be the rock bottom for Zuko. I can only take so much more second hand embarrassment.
Fully-provisioned princess of the fire nation v. sleep-deprived half trained avatar v. starving outlaw who seems to have forgotten to bring his swords, the only weapon he's good at. Place your bets, folks!

That was kind of Katara to offer to help. I didn't expect that.
Final Thoughts
This episode doesn't let up once. Even the break with Toph and Iroh having tea doesn't do much to dispell the rising tension from the chase. The musical stinger that plays over the title card was a surprise bit of foreshadowing in that way.
That tank thing was neat. Shame about what it contained, but that's a really cool design.
Poor Appa was once again the MVP this episode. It was uncomfortable watching him get so exhausted.
It seems like the thin veneer of level-headedness cultivated by Katara over the last season or so is indeed quite thin. It was interesting to see how the different characters reacted to being tired. Sokka was alternatively amped up and completely chilled out, Aang got quiet (until he felt Appa was being insulted), Katara reverted to her early season one characterisation. It's hard to say with Toph, because we've only known her one episode (it feels like more) but I think she just got more Toph-like.
Please let this be the end in Zuko's experiment with independence. He's not good at it. He needs uncle. Points for trying, but he failed, so please bring uncle back.
Sokka low key wins this episode. He's the one with sense, the only one who stays clear-headed when it counts, and it turns out that clear head of his can defeat the pokey thing Ty Lee does.
I don't know how much time is supposed to have passed between picking up Toph and the start of this episode, but I can't help but feel that Toph really got the short end of the stick here. She did give up everything, even if much of what she gave up was not that great for her personally. And in return she got to travel in a way that completely blinds her and get yelled at. Meeting Iroh was a nice consolation prize.
Now I kind of want a story where Toph doesn't come back to the Gaang and instead goes around unleashing bending hell on the earth kingdom.
Was there no b plot or c plot this episode? Everything kind of collided in the final couple of scenes, which I did not see coming.
Frantic is the word I keep coming back to for this episode. Everything fit together nicely. I'll definitely rewatch it when I have the chance to do so in one sitting, without unforseen technical problems.

If that means moving out of the bunker, and not driving the Impala, and letting Cas fuck him, then that’s what he has to do. It’s an easy deal. It should be an easy life. So how come Dean still can’t quite make sense of it?

hmm i was gonna be like "oh i don't know, they're all so different" but actually No this is easy look

general thoughts:
vol 1 - gets stuck in between b & c because there are some genuinely good and interesting moments but those generally get lost under the weight of the really racist ending and the more boring issues
vol 2 - i know this isn't everyone's favorite and it definitely mischaracterizes the new warriors but if i ignore that it's enjoyable. i think the delivery service is cute. rich is having a bad time in his 20s and i can relate to that. i also think the nova 00 plotline was really good and so was the garthan saal + xandar Stuff that happens here. 18 is Devestating and i think about it a lot. gets points of for the some of the insensitive stuff in 2, 6, & 7 and also just dropping plot points left and right (I want to talk about epyrus again :( )
vol. 3 - (deep breath in) this one is Bad and if you've read it you know the reasons why. however, i do enjoy whatever bernie and rich have going on. i think putting rich in college is STUPID and i while rich's shitty fast food job has some funny moments it also Sucks because the delivery service thing was fine ok. OK? god.
vol. 4 - genuinely great, definitely the best of rich's solos, especially the first 25 issues. gets points off because the stuff that comes at the very end could use some work. overall very a super fun read, and definitely what hooks a lot of people when it comes to rich's character. gamora planned to give rich brainworms but she didn't account for me getting infected also
vol. 5 - good! love sam. i think its weaker points come with the territory of sam being a new character + the kinks of writing an origin story. overall good.
vol. 6 - fine. nothing really remarkable about it. i read it when it was coming out in 2016 while I was in middle school and thought it was ok. i don't remember all that much about it tbh. i should probably re read it but overall as of right now i remember it being fine if a little boring at times
vol. 7 - placed the highest for a reason; it's really good and the art is iconic. perhaps vol. 4 is better in terms of content but because this one was cut short it didn't have the same issues that vol. 4 did. overall awesome, but it's really only one arc so i'm not sure it's comparable to the others (also it's a duo not a solo but.... you know how it is)

how. how would i even write out a proper fic of dramaturgy au,,
cutting this off bc i got too caught up in myself and rambled
ok umm,, dramaturgy as an au is just so character study-ish and generally character-focused,, plus the initial developments made on island are kiinda important to the cast dynamic?? so as i see it there are a few options:
A: rehash/go through the unchanged plot of island, the TDDDDI special, some eps of WT, using it to develop the Situation from other characters perspectives while maybe having one or two to emphasize noahs characterization
it gives a lot of time for character developments outside of noah himself, and time to reinforce noahs own characterization using that outside perspective,, but could potentially get boring/long-winded, since nothing different happens and its literally just Characters Having Screentime
^ maybe sub a full going-through with character vignettes and specific scenarios throughout island/the special/celeb. manhunt or after TD/eps of WT??? i guess you could also slot smth like this in with the other ideas aswell
B: begin the hypothetical fic post-jamaica challenge and leading into london, use it to exposition some minor things and generally establish characterization before getting into challenges and actual canon divergence
it doesnt drag on (as much atleast), gives you enough time with enough cast members to establish what the others think of noah and what noah thinks/how he behaves and why (probably slot in his distrust of alejandro here??), more challenges gives noah more chances (and reasons) to break character, though the character development has to be slow and conflict should probably be built up (but im kinda partial to this one ngl)
C: kindof half-baked but beginning in london (i’m imagining literally at his eel line), where hes eliminated that episode, but comes back via comeback challenge; arc kicked off by being so pissed off that he has to come back and do the Same Shit yet again (and probably because of producer-rigging. again.)
the conflict/character dynamics would move a little faster, its less to trudge through and figure out canon changes like the butterfly effect of noah staying in the game in london, but having less characters to have relationships/interactions with (but making the ones had can be more developed/rounded as a result), less Time in general, the original idea of noah ‘unmasking’ alejandro is kiiinda less impactful this late into the game?? slightly i feel like
or D: even more half-baked than C and kinda just 'possible' and feeling out of place, but you could have noahs arc happen in all-stars instead (smth smth the audience was vv dissatisfied with how he ranked in WT and so he gets brought back)
^ this is mostly bc i like the motif of noah having eel-pond related scars and seeing it as a physical reminder of where 'acting like the camera isn't there' can get him (but you could potentially fit this into the C idea, posing it more as a bitter feeling/theme rather than a motivation to continue his facade)
i dont really like this one from a storytelling standpoint, and it doesnt make much sense since theres no character motivation via unmasking alejandro since everyone already knows at this point?? idk it is there though
umm yeah thats all ive got, i guess you could also mismatch ideas like B&C so the fic starts post-jamaica but noah still gets eliminated, or have noah eliminated after london but still winning the comeback challenge and coming back swearing vengeance (within his own head mostly) or smth like that
i kinda wanted to just put this Out in the World and let it simmer before i start combing through WT to make the allotted ‘official’ canon changes of this au lol
(and not to mention theres still the issue of the actual Ending,, does he win?? is his winning both symbolic and the first genuine, intentional break of character he makes, to the audience and his peers beyond the unintentional ones hes made along the way???
smth smth character growth, hes learned how to let himself break character but now hes learning to do it intentionally too??? < im partial to that but im also biased towards noah and any hypothetical win of his

the original draft of this idea has noah not in fact winning but it also had a strangely,,,,, vindictive tone?? that might not be the word but the Themes were different and noah was more scheme-ish rather than defense mechanism-having so im thinking the ending should change as well)

Wanna get them off my chest
Few things i wanna talk about here. I'll go point wise
A: Overhaul arc had all the male characters do something epic all while giving us a solid background to their past lives, even the villains like Rappa were given a decent amount of interest. And they fought like crazy. The girls (god i HATE Nejire) were there just to be cute and have girly moments. Their team effort couldn't put up a respectable fight against that giant meat head of a villain despite having a pro hero by their side and their victory was shown off screen. Why were the female characters even there? They're all fap bait material and anyone who says otherwise, you need therapy, help, you need Jesus
B: This is hard for me to say it, but here goes. I have a soft spot for Shigaraki and a few LoV members. But they are as stupid as the heroes because if they'd been a tad bit smarter and actually did some serious digging, they'd be able to figure out about Hawk's true intentions. No chips, no tracking devices, no hidden cameras attatched to his clothes without Hawk's knowing, or anything of that sort despite knowing Hawk's is actually the #2 hero of Japan? I don't run any criminal organization but even my dumb brain can tell me that this is plain stupid. Thanks to the LoV being this gullible enough to allow Hawks to dance, prance and flutter his feathers all over the place, we are in this shit storm now.
C: The villains had Best Jeanist's dead body floating around in their facility, waiting for the right moment to use it and turn it into a nomu. Wouldn't the ''right time'' have been now, during the war? If you need to make both the villains and the heroes equally stupid and irrational, then it's better to take a 3 to 5 months hiatus and rethink about the plot of the series
D: Stars and Strips. Enough Said. Also, i won't be going into details about the latest events of the manga because I have self respect and also because I dont care. Maybe I will once the manga ends.
E: It's ok for both Izu and Mirio to use Eri's quirk but it's not if its the villains who are doing it. Double Standard. Also, Overhaul himself could have used his own quirk and made bullets to sell them off in the back market. He too can destroy and heal at the same time. Sell the healing part of his quirk to the heroes and sell the other quirk of his to the villains. Capture Eraser Head, use artificial drugs to enhance the erase quirk and also sell his quirk in the black market. Problem solved. This whole Eri plot still doesn't sit well with me.
F: MVA is pointless, Shigaraki's growth and achievement and him getting more powers from the crazy doc to become even more stronger because a war was coming, are not worth the the mention because potato ball sac just possess Shigaraki. That poor character is now a nothing ass character. I'm sorry Shiggy hunnie, you're my ultimate anime husbando but I see the reality too and it's twisting my heart, ripping it apart.
G: Don't expect/have high hopes for Deku vs Shigaraki to happen because the manga is busy wetting itself for Bakugou. Hori might not be decent enough to let this happen
H: Who is Izuko Midoriya?!?

I spent the last couple days getting this together.
Okay so I spent several hours analysing if Dazai could be dead or alive. Here are the facts. (I am definitely not in a river in Egypt)

This man is still pulling goofy facial expressions. This suggests that even though it looks to us and Dostoyovesky that there is no way out.
Now when we look at this panel...

Out of the four shots, only three left impacts in the wall. Two shoulder shots and the rib shot. The impact from the headshot is MISSING.
Now this may be because the bullet has lodged itself in Dazai's brain, but some recoil is to be expected, no?. And here

You'd also assume, that since the bullet was shot point blank, the bullet would go through the head, as the other bullets left IMPACT CRATERS even through flesh. which bring me to my next point.
THERE IS NO BLOOD FROM THE HEADSHOT ON THE WALL.
This means that it is either, a) stuck inside Dazai's brain, b) deflected somehow, or c) it's a red herring.
To conclude:
No impact crater from the headshot.
The bullet did not pass fully through Dazai's skull (suggests that there may be something obstructing the bullet, or Dazai has a thick skull, or Dazai's brain ate it.)
It's still unclear whether he is alive or not but this man is armed to the teeth with plot armour so BETTER WAIT TILL SEPTEMBER LOL.
Who am I fucking kidding, I can't wait until then. I will go back to posting incorrect quotes and boring existence.

Pacifism in “Hard to Be a God”
[Minor spoilers for the book - discussion of overarching themes with a few minor plot points as examples. There’ll be another warning for MAJOR SPOILERS hidden under “Keep reading”, just before the conclusion.]
(All quotes are from the 1973 translation by Wendayne Ackerman.)
One thing I adore about “Hard to Be a God” is that its protagonist, Anton, is a genuinely nuanced, thought-provoking depiction of a pacifist character.
Some media with this kind of protagonist falls into the trap of implying that the hero has some sort of innate kindness or softness to them. And because they are, individually, “such a compassionate person”, they can do the whole enlightened “forgive and forget, love thy enemy, everyone can be redeemed” shtick. The writer implicitly rewards this “kind nature” by giving the hero overpowered abilities which vindicate their beliefs, and let them continue displaying their kindness (see: Naruto, Steven Universe).
In “Hard to Be a God”, this is inverted. The main reason Anton can resolve fights without bloodshed is because:
A) He was raised by a much more advanced civilisation which imparted onto him their humanistic philosophy. His job literally demands him to be a passive observer who avoids conflict. B) He has access to modern combat techniques and technology (extra-durable chainmail, fast-acting medicine, a helicopter and the ability to generate gold) which give him a significant advantage (both in direct confrontations and in negotiation). C) [speculation] Other Noon Universe novels such as “The Inhabited Island” and “The Waves Extinguish the Wind” suggest that Earth’s scouts are genetically modified, giving them greater strength and survivability (though I’m not sure whether this is the case in “Hard to Be a God”, as it takes place much earlier in the timeline).
Anton’s privilege and power are not implied to be a reward for his goodness; it’s the opposite. The fact that he has privilege and power is what gives him the opportunity to be good. This is explicitly drawn attention to when he says things like:
“Remember that they do not know what they are doing; and that they are almost all free of guilt. And that is why you must have the patience of Job, patience, patience [...]”
The general doctrine of Earth’s scouts is not to judge the locals’ moral depravity, because the latter weren’t brought up in the same favourable social conditions as the former.
But ok, even with the deck stacked so heavily in Anton’s favour, he still struggles to be a pacifist. After spending so much time in a world that he sees as backwards - full of filthy brutes and meek, complicit peasants - he has to repress his contempt for these people. He has to manage his emotions, snapping himself out of anger fits:
"And I almost tore them to pieces, he suddenly realized. If they hadn’t run inside I would have killed them! He remembered the bet he had recently made, how he had taken a dummy clad in a double Soanian suit of armor and split it from head to toe with his sword—cold shivers ran down his back at the thought. They might now be lying here in a pool of their own blood, like stuck pigs, and he would be standing here, sword in hand, not knowing what to do … A fine god you are! You’ve become a beast …”
And here’s another important aspect of this: he is deeply ambivalent about this “no killing” rule. On one hand, he takes it as a moral imperative, and is revolted at the thought that he’d be capable of such savagery. On the other hand, he is angry at his own impotence. He doesn’t see his pacifism as bravery, but as passivity - a cowardly refusal to take decisive action when it is desperately needed.
After all, just being an individual saint is not enough to fix a rotten society. What good is Anton’s pacifism if everyone else is gleefully murdering each other? He can’t be everywhere at once, saving people and resolving conflicts diplomatically.
What Anton really wants is to overthrow Arkanar’s cruel leaders; he often fantasizes about staging a full-blown revolution. It’s only his pragmatism that keeps him in check. He reasons that, with how society is structured there, killing a dictator would just create a power vacuum which competing factions would try to fill by slaughtering each other and whoever else happens to be in the way, Anton included.
But, most importantly, Anton is not rewarded for his pacifism. It doesn’t make him feel good - the opposite, it makes him miserable. Nobody (outside of a very small circle of his closest friends) is “inspired by” or respects his morals. They see them as a weird idiosyncrasy which handicaps him.
[MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE ENDING FROM HERE ON, WATCH OUT!]
And in the end, after losing Kira, the person closest to him in all of Arkanar, he can no longer restrain himself. He goes on a rampage, and is punished for it - he accomplishes nothing, and his superiors immediately withdraw him from the mission. Back at home, when his old friend, Anka, hears of his exploits, she starts to fear him. The final lines of the novel are heart-breaking:
“'Anka,' he said tenderly. 'Anka, my little friend …' He held his long arms out to her. Timidly she leaned forward, then quickly jumped back a step. On his fingers … But it was not blood, only the stain of strawberries.“
The implication is clear. Anton has been tainted. He has shown to be capable of incredible cruelty and, no matter how justifiably angry he felt at the time, the people he killed are a permanent stain on his conscience. Metaphorically, the blood is still on his hands.
In this assessment, pacifism and goodness are not exceptional qualities (at least by the standards of futuristic space communists). They’re an expected baseline. Losing your self-restraint and killing, even in extreme circumstances, is a failure.
And I mean, it makes sense. If you have the power to avoid causing bloodshed, it seems like a given that you should use it. Nobody is framed as “heroic” for keeping to this basic standard.
To me, this was so refreshing about about “Hard to Be a God”. It ticks off some of the same tropes as other pacifist protagonists (overpowered abilities and exceptional moral purity relative to their environment) but with none of the aggrandisement and hero worship. Instead of being celebrated and vindicated for doing the right thing, Anton’s only rewards are agonising moral dilemmas and the constant fear that his passivity is enabling things to get worse.
The crucial takeaway is this: PACIFISM IS HARD. Helping people in times of crisis is hard. Making society better is hard. You will have to get your hands dirty, make personal sacrifices, compromise yourself. You won’t feel all fine and dandy as you preach your pacifism from a place of comfort and moral superiority. It really takes a bit of a masochistic, martyr mentality to get anywhere with it.
(Side note: This is only loosely related, but another character that embodies this ideal is Dr. Rieux from “The Plague” by Albert Camus. He loses almost everything while working tirelessly to help his patients, but is not celebrated as a hero. He himself doesn’t view his actions as “heroic”, but simply as “common decency”.)
I think more optimistic stories about pacifism are afraid of this idea. They want to encourage kindness by framing it as simple and uncontroversial - not effortless per-se, but not too challenging either. And they also aggrandise it by framing kind individuals as exceptionally wonderful.
And I don’t know, this irks me. Aren’t we setting the bar very low for humanity, if just being a decent person is so praise-worthy? Isn’t it cynical and contradictory to imply that we’ll be rewarded for our “selflessness” with admiration, and our actions will be vindicated by success? Doesn’t it inflate expectations and set people up for disappointment when we portray kindness as easy, flowing naturally from some innate “good nature” within us?
I know, I’m rambling at this point. But that’s kind of why I love sci-fi - it thrives in this ambiguity and existential dread. It doesn’t give me reassuring narratives about heroism, but asks hard questions and trails off with no satisfying conclusion.
God, this book is so good. The Strugatskys are so good.
I really need to finish that Roadside Picnic essay.

i love digging into the underpinnings of systems like kidou (why do they call out the numbers? are the numbers part of the incantations? are they part of the actual spells themselves? who numbered them? who created them?), zanpakutou (what does it mean that so few shinigami have zanpakutou spirits whose gender is opposite their own? does it signify something in particular? does society in-universe believe it signifies something in particular?), the ins & outs of how Soul Society, the material world and Hueco Mundo connect to each other (is SS superimposed directly over the earth of the human world, like the Wandenreich was hidden "in" SS, or is it in a physically different place? what does it mean that HM is "between" the human world and soul society? why is HM's moon "in the opposite lunar phase" to the human world's??? WHY IS THE MOON BACKWARDS KUBO 😫)

a particular subset of that is trying to figure out how soul biology works. reiryoku is energy that can be utilized by the soul; we know what produces and regulates the energy, the hakusui (soul sleep) and saketsu (chain binding), which exist at physical points in the body, if not as discrete organs. how does reiryoku circulate? is it analogous to Quincies' blut vene/arterie? are there spiritual blood vessels? nerves? meridians? what's with the "reiatsu vents" that were mentioned in relation to 1 (one) singular kidou spell and then never again??? (i'm imagining them like the pinhole punched thru thermos lids - they have a small but very important job, b/c if they're not there, Shit Don't Work Right)

also obviously, my Blorbo Of All Time, Kisuke 💚🤍💚🤍💚 (the rest of this is under a cut b/c i am SUPER DUPER NOT KIDDING about being able to talk for hours lmao)
there are precious few lines in canon that address Kisuke's backstory pre-TBTP arc, and fleshing out how he and Tessai came to be at Shihouin manor is certainly not an unpopular theme in headcanon and fanworks, but i fear i may have taken it to a very OTT level...
like, ok, listen. listen. if he was from rukongai (a common HC), most people there aren't really from rukongai, they're from the human world, right? so where was he from that he was platinum blond in Ghost Japan? obviously the easy answer is that people from all over the world end up in rukongai indiscriminately - but that wasn't as fun as deciding he was the son of Portuguese traders in Nagasaki during the tail end of the Sengoku era, and during the lead-up to the Edo era's isolationist policies, he was killed and subsequently wound up in rukongai. is that extremely convoluted YES, did that deter me in any way NO. i could not, though, find much information on what the Nagasaki dialect may have sounded like in the late 1500s, which i looked into even tho the fic i'm writing will be in English, not Japanese, and CERTAINLY not late medieval Japanese.
(i also looked up what the imperial era names would've been then even tho they're not going to feature in the fic in any way, shape or form. tenshou, bunroku and keichou, btw. this is taking up valuable space in my brain right next to the permanently-memorized-since-2002 lyrics to Hamasaki Ayumi's Dearest)

FINALLY getting out of the worldbuilding and backstory morass into actual canon events(!!) - i could also talk for hours about Kisuke's motivation and reasoning behind early canon's Hougyoku Plot™ (keeping in mind that it's likely just an artifact of kubo's plot swerve at the end of the SS arc, where he'd probably started out intending Kisuke to be a villain in league with Aizen, and the late retcon meant Kisuke's actions no longer made any damn sense.)
anyway, my favorite element of canon here to play with is that most of what we know about it comes from Aizen's dialogue at the end of the SS arc. so what if Aizen wasn't being strictly truthful? even if he wasn't outright lying, he certainly could've spun things to sound much different, much worse, than they really were - and, of course, in ways that would make Kisuke sound terrible if he tried to explain himself and his actions. maybe stashing the hougyoku in Rukia's soul was never meant to be permanent (he invented the only non-fatal method of removing it himself, after all); it was just a way to keep it close to Ichigo, to awaken & evolve his powers, but still concealed. maybe Rukia's gigai was never meant to turn her fully human (he would recognize the name Kuchiki and know she'd be missed were she to disappear); it simply used a similar composition to Isshin's gigai, so that a shinigami soul with a "dose" of human would balance out Ichigo's hollow.
that leaves room for Kisuke to have still been using Rukia and Ichigo like pawns on a chessboard, so it's not like he's totally innocent and absolved of guilt - but it makes him guilty in a way that both 1. patches the plothole and 2. makes Aizen even more petty, spiteful and dickish, which is delightful to me. it also leaves room for Rukia's powers not coming back after she transferred them to Ichigo to be because of the hougyoku's influence instead of gigai tampering - subconsciously, she wanted to stay in the world of the living, and she knew she could only do that while Ichigo was still taking on her shinigami duties. the consequence of a magical wishing stone that grants desires is that it doesn't only grant the desires you consciously voice (which is ALSO delightful to me).

i love finding ways to explain Kisuke's Weirdness. like, sure, maybe he's just a weird person - but with the power of projection on my side, he, too, can be ADHD and maybe autistic! has trouble making eye contact, so he wears his hair in a way that lets him hide his eyes, and starts wearing a hat and using the fan to hide his face even further! Only One Outfit Syndrome isn't just an artifact of the episodic visual medium, it's because he's so particular about the types and cuts of fabric he wears! his favorite food is plain white rice and his dislikes are "too many to list," for heaven's sake! he just like me fr!!!
as a rukongai street rat transplanted into one of the most prominent noble households in all Soul Society, i can only imagine he and Tessai adopted their default polite modes of speech under relative duress - if they were ever found to be out of line, the "proper" nobles (obviously barring Yoruichi, who wouldn't give a fuck) wouldn't hesitate to put them in their place. in Tessai this evolved into pure formality; in Kisuke it evolved into a mild, polite register that he pointedly refused to make any more or less formal - a.k.a. "just polite enough to piss everyone off" lmao.
also on the subject of speech, i found out where Kisuke's "atashi" comes from!! it's shitamachi ("lower city") dialect, the old working-class dialect of Edo/Tokyo. in TBTP he still says "boku," so he picked it up only after he and the Visored came to the human world (Karakura is supposed to be somewhere nearish to Tokyo) and set up the shouten. as far as i can tell, "atashi" is the only aspect of that dialect that Kisuke uses - other more common aspects, like turning the ending vowel sounds of adjectives into -ee or -ii sounds ("urusai" -> "urusee", "warui" -> "warii", etc.), are actually used in Ichigo's speech to make him sound like a delinquent tough-guy shonen protag, lol. how and when "atashi" went from working-class street hawkers' slang to a feminine pronoun used almost exclusively by young girls, i have no fucking idea lmao... (also i have no idea if canon bears this out in their dialect, but the Ishidas are totally yamanote in contrast, right?? high-class, well-to-do, prim and proper, Old Money™, etc etc - they gotta be!)
one more thing and then i'll actually end this post jdfksjdf but! years ago i saw a post from @saranel about why, at the beginning of the arrancar arc, Kisuke talked about the Visored to Isshin as if he didn't know them that well. obviously the most likely explanation is "kubo hadn't finalized their backstory at that point yet" lol, but filling in doylist plotholes with watsonian pavement is part of what makes fandom fun! and her theory (i can't find the post 😭 sorry) was that Kisuke'd had a falling out with the Visored at some point during their exile - probably, given the Visored's initial animosity toward shinigami, regarding Kisuke using the shop to help the shinigami in Karakura. this is SUPER juicy to me, because i can imagine how shinji, hiyori etc. would've taken it as a betrayal, a backstabbing, from one of the few people in their world they thought they could trust - and how kisuke never, ever intended it that way, probably didn't anticipate it could be taken that way at all, he was just trying to help out - everyone involved is walking away from that confrontation emotionally scraped raw and bleeding, and i am LIVING for it 🥰

I’m so happy to see Skywarp and Novastorm in earthspark, their abilities are so cool and so tragically underutilized in most tf stuff they just show up and end up being either killed or conveniently cast aside. because their abilities would solve most problems far too quickly for there to be a story. Which is utter fucking nonsense because you should build the stories around the characters not see them as tools that can either further or prevent the plot. (Oh this is turning into a rant now you’ve been warned)
Like here’s a freakin example in IDW that kept grinding my gears at all the missed opportunities. I read the MTMTE comics and I read The Windblade comics. And I kept thinking “Man, I wonder what would happen if Soundwave was here.” Admittedly I do that to a lot of things, it helps me read through stuff I’m not a 100 percent fixated on. But I digress, so lemme give you some examples of moments that had me desperately wishing that Soundwave wasn’t in the hands of John Barber in RID.
The idw windblade comics literally has bumblebee stuck in starscreams head. now imagine how fucking interesting it would be if Soundwave showed up and was like “when the fuck did bumblebee get back” because soundwave can literally read minds. and since it turns out bumblebee is actually just some form of transmission from that weird little black hole thing shockwave created during dark cybertron. Suddenly starscream is not so crazy. Suddenly there’s hope for bumblebee. Suddenly soundwave has a far more interesting role than he did in RID. I also desperately and I do mean DESPERATELY want soundwave and windblade to interact because they’re both supposed to be telepaths but so far each continuity they’ve been in has had only one of them have the ability, or neither of them have had it, which is just SO frustrating to me. I wanna see Soundwave try and take over a titan. and wanna see him duke it out with Windblade telepathically.
I also really wanted to see sanctuary station have a bigger role, it felt so isolated and inconsequential because we never even really saw any of the decepticons just hang out in it or how their life was like on the station. It just felt like a from point A to point B plot location which is such a missed opportunity because it would’ve been a big fucking thing after the war. To have a place just full of Decepticon war veterans.
I really just wanted to see Soundwave actually still have a link to cybertron instead of being carded off as the token decepticon in Optimus prime’s story with the GI joes on earth. I fucking wish I was kidding but that is literally what he turned into. There’s so much stuff related to the decepticons happening on cybertron during the Windblade comics and I can’t help but feel like I’ve been robbed of seeing Soundwave actually play a vital role in how decepticon are treated after the war with the autobots. I’m just lamenting at this point so, moving on.
Imagining Soundwave in MTMTE is less about loss of potential and more about satiating my curiosity frankly, because the crew on the lost light end up dealing with A: charisma eating robots, B: a giant robot named Sunder who can fuck with peoples minds and eat their thoughts. And C: a whole freakin planet powered by telepaths. And don’t even get me started on Tarns abilities.
I see you James Roberts and I see your previous fan favorite UK soundwave as clear as day in the pattern of antagonists. Ok so maybe it’s just because I’m fixated on Soundwave but istg reading MTMTE feels like an exploration of some thoughts that have been cooked up for a while by someone who have been wondering about Soundwaves abilities. A: soundwave has been notoriously established as uncharismatic simply because of the first transformers movie. B: soundwave actually has a cassette called Sundor, but that’s more of a fun fact of sounding close to Sunder because what really caught my attention was Sunders way of describing how he felt thoughts which reminded me of how Soundwave describes his telepathy. And C: a whole god damn planet fueled by telepaths creating your dream destination idk that’s just fun to imagine what that’d do to soundwave. Would he be able to call bullshit of would it be like a feedback loop of telepathy?
Okay so let’s get started on Tarn, who I can best describe as a combination of all of decepticon high command but mostly he resembles Soundwave. and for good reason because it seems to me that James Robert tried to make something resembling a UK Soundwave who unlike the G1 cartoon Soundwave was more of a charismatic sweet talker villain type. When I first saw Tarn in my early days of transformers I couldn’t help but think “that’s literally just soundwave wtf” I know better now, but I’m still a bit sour over not getting to see Soundwave get the MTMTE makeover (idk what sorta magic they used to create such god tier robot designs but I want some) but regardless Tarn is a damn good villain who draws in the audience and then makes them boo at him as he has his kick the dog moment or in this case rip the cat, that makes him completely irredeemable. And makes the audience cheer for megatron as he kills Tarn.
A few thoughts on this Tarn guy and the bullet that soundwave managed to dodge by having a healthy support system in idw and not being solely loyal to Megatron.
Soundwave in the war for cybertron game was put in charge of almost the exact same type of prison as Tarn was in IDW. They would capture autobots, kill them, and recycle their parts. Tarn would melt them alive. Soundwave would gun them down. One is considered an agonizing death the other is considered quick. I just find it interesting how they’ve essentially been put in the exact same role of being the guy who takes care of the dirty work, yet they have such a different approach to it. But those are two separate continuities so let’s go back to the IDW one, where they seem to have worked together alongside megatron during the war. Idk if tarn was a part of high command but he was definitely standing at the side usually reserved for second in command at the end of the transformers vs ROM comic. Talk about missed opportunities, I would have loved to see how Soundwave and tarn interacted during the war.
Ah well, I really love IDW for what they gave us with transformers even if there is a bunch of missed potential and opportunities. That just means other tf stories and continuities can pick up on it and do something with it.
