This blog is delightful!! I see so many new buggy friends every day now and it's lovely! I've always been a fan of an assortment of bugs (I was the kid who would spend all day looking for them instead of playing with the other kids, lol) but I've always had a particularly hard time warming up to the especially spindly and fast moving guys, particularly spiders (somehow, tarantulas do not apply to this statement, my beloveds) but seeing other people be enthusiastic or have neat bug stories has been helping. Are there any particularly "gnarly" (subjectively, of course) speedy arachnids that you wouldn't mind sharing?
(NOTE THAT NEGATIVE COMMENTS ON THIS POST WILL GET YOU BLOCKED.)
Oh, I can relate! I used to be an arachnophobe, and the very large, fast, and leggy ones scared the heck out of me. This is going to be incredibly subjective of course so I'm sorry if my definition of gnarly dudes doesn't fit yours! I'll also stick to spiders one might find in the US, since that's where I'm based.
And just a note that none of these guys scare me anymore! I've grown to love and appreciate all of them, so this post is in no way trying to shed them in a negative light. And none of these dudes are harmful :)
Giant crab spider (actually a huntsman, Olios giganteus):
Look at that face and the cute little peets. Precious. Photo by deserts
Dark fishing spider, Dolomedes tenebrosus:
These pals can get up to 4 inches across and are incredibly fast! Photo by jmcardle
Carolina wolf spider, Hogna carolinensis:
The largest wolf spider in the US! Like the other two, they actively hunt rather than trapping prey in webs, so they're very fast. But look at that adorable little face! Photo by arcebianca0505
Giant house spider, Eratigena duellica:
Smaller yet somehow more leggy than the others. They're harmless funnel weavers, but holy smokes are they fast! One of the fastest species in the U.S., as it happens. Photo by bryn_
And finally the large and leggy pantropical huntsman, Heteropoda venatoria:
That's so much leg. Wow. Impressive hunters! They've been known to take down small lizards and snakes. If I could kiss one I would. Photo by mutolisp

HUNTSMAN SPIDER (Sparassidae): Olios giganteus, “giant crab spider”
[Bonus exuvia behind cut because I don’t expect anyone else to think it’s cool lol]
So the legspan on the male Olios giganteus that left this exoskeleton I found had to have been at least 2 inches, almost palm-sized. Which means now that its molted, it’s bigger than that. And if there are females around here somewhere, they’re even bigger than that 😮

Found this chonky, fuzzy spider today. Her sac was open, and when we spread it a little more to peek inside, she was so still and stiff that Kitty and I thought she was dead. Nope, she was just sluggish until she realized we were about to flip her over for a better look; then she scuttled off. I'd never seen a spider that looked like her before, so I had to do a bit of Googling. My best guess is Olios giganteus, aka a Giant Crab Spider or a Golden Huntsman. She was about the size of a Wolf Spider, but totally different markings. Did I ID her correctly? #spiders #arachnid #arachnids #ranchlife #westtexas #wildlife #oliosgiganteus #giantcrabspider #goldenhuntsman #nature 📸 #googlepixel5a #teampixel #giftfromgoogle #madebygoogle (at Meador Draw Ranch) https://www.instagram.com/p/CU2-HbUvMrt/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Top 10 bug species I want to have for pets.
Making a list of the top ten species of insects/arachnids that I would adore caring for. I am excluding millipedes from this list because they are my favorite and I want to care for them all. Click the link to see some beautiful specimens!
In no particular order.
10. Velvet Ant (Dasymutilla occidentalis)
Not actually an ant, but a type of wasp! Females are wingless and pack a very painful sting. However, you really have to work to get them to sting you, it is a last resort for them! They hail from the western desert of the USA and are also known as cow killers! They can live to be about two years old if you keep them dry and well fed. A hands off pet!
9. House Centipede (Scutigera coleoptrata)
Did you know these guys can live to be 7 years and older? House centipedes are near and dear to my heart as another USA native. I have always enjoyed watching these guys bum rush pests and drag them away. They are rather delicate to keep as you must meet very specific environmental conditions. You cannot handle them as they can sting you pretty good. Their venom in humans usually only causes a mild rash and they honestly don’t mean to sting you. They are fast and cunning predators. A hands off pet indeed!
8. Golden orb-web spider / Banana spider (Nephila clavipes)
A Florida native. Most of the Nephilia class of orb weavers are very large and build strong webs. These guys build webs strong enough to catch lizards and hummingbirds. Not so long lived, but they are also surprisingly gentle. They are reluctant to bite. This is a species that you can handle, but with care. They can become spooked and injure themselves if you are not careful and they decide to jump off of you on to the hard floor. They need a lot of vertical space. Handle, but gently and slowly.
7. Spiny Flower Mantis (Pseudocreobotra wahlbergii)
A species from Africa, they need specific environments in order to thrive. They tend to live for about a year and are very aggressive predators. Determined mantids can take down small reptiles and birds. In captivity they enjoy flies and other flying insects. You can handle these guys as they tend to see humans as weird walking trees. They can bite and pinch if you harass them. So yes, handle gently and don’t be a dick to them.
6. Hellgrammite (Protohermes grandis)
The larval form of the Dobsonfly. They can spend about 4-5 years as an aquatic larvae, before pupating and then living as an adult for only a week or two. They don’t eat as adults, but as larvae they are clever predators. Finding one in a stream in the US is a good sign of clean water. Hellgrammites cannot stand polluted water and die quickly. They can bite. As an aquatic species they should not be handled, and you should use a net to transport them when cleaning the tank ect ect.
5. Halloween Crab (Gecarcinus quadratus)
A long lived species if cared for properly, a Halloween crab needs a very specific and tailored environment. They need a minimum of two feet of substrate to burrow into, so you will need an extremely large tank to house them. They need places to climb and even toys. They can become stressed if handled, so only pick them up if you must. The can pinch very hard. They are omnivores and enjoy a varied diet. A wonderful species if you are willing to dedicate the time to research and care for them.
4. Leaf Insect (Phyllium philippinicum)
The bros of the insect world. These gentle vegetarians are beautiful. They tend to well, not be so active as they pretend to be leaves for the most part, but they are lovely. You can handle them, but gently. They can and will crawl all over you if you allow them too. They eat brambles, so be prepared to find them if you choose to keep these guys. They also will eat oak leaves and mangoes. They live for about a year.
3. Regal Jumping spider (Phiddippus regius)
One of the largest and most beautiful species of jumping spider in the world. They are quick predators and need lots of space to hide to hunt. Their life span varies between 1 to two years. They rarely bite and must be harassed first. They are easily stressed so only handle if you are moving them. They need high heat and humidity in order to thrive.
2. Golden Hunstman spider (Olios giganteus)
These guys are babies of the spider world. They are some of the few species that can be handled a lot and are very reluctant to bite. However they can bite if you scare them! They live for about a year and can get very large. They are a very gentle species and can be found native in the USA.
1. Giant African Snail. (Lissachatina fulica)
GREAT BIG BABIES. Sadly to my current understanding, they are illegal in the USA as they are invasive. THANKS IRRESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS . >(. That might change in the future, but for now I can only pine for them. They can live to be 6-10 years old and can be handled. In other countries, i recommend quarantining them before you handle them, and buy from clean and reputable dealers.
I WANT THEM. BUT I AM POOR.
