Walking the beach at Leadbetter Point, 9 Aug 2023. Pentax IQZoom 170SL/Kodak Ultramax 400 Emee and I like to visit the Long Beach Peninsula at least once a year. This spit of land juts into the Pacific at the very southwestern edge of Washington. Pacifc County Courthouse, Oysterville, WA, circa 1900.

The catalog record includes an intriguing note “later the home to Peninsula College by 1895.” There is currently a Peninsula College, a junior college in Port Angeles, founded in 1961. Aside from this note I have been unable to come up with any references to a Peninsula College in Oysterville in the late 19th century..

Scope And Content:One image, ca. 1900, of the original Pacific County Courthouse and later the home to Peninsula College by 1895. Several people are gathered at the entrance to the building. Notes:A vote of the electorate in May 1855 officially designated the settlement of Oysterville as the new county seat. For nearly two decades the County Commissioners held their sessions in whatever building was available. A courthouse was finally erected in 1875 and served for nearly eighteen years until the county seat was moved to South Bend.
