hi! this is very random so please feel free to dismiss this but i really admire the way you discuss bsd and the works associated with the characters and i want to ask your opinion on something!

i am an art student majoring in illustration, and for one of my classes we've been assigned to create a full book sleeve for a classic book. we had to choose a few from a list to thumbnail out but we were also allowed to pick one or two books off of the list. normally, we aren't allowed to do fanart pieces for any of our classes but naturally i was like this is the perfect oppurtunity to do subtle bsd fanart!

i ended up deciding on wanting to no longer human since i just finished reading it not too long ago

i dont have any bsd friends irl or mutuals on here, so i wanted to see if you may have any ideas on a potential book cover (thats also just thinly vieled dazai fanart),, again no worries if not this is a pretty random request so i get it

anon I am so sorry to have let you down with my reply, I kinda forgot tumblr asks existed again ;-; I hope you did well with your assignment, I would've chosen NLH too! now let me try to make it up to you and respond as if I got this ask a few hours ago!

when I hear "No Longer Human illustration" my mind immediately goes to Junji Ito's manga adaptation. without knowing what your style looks like or how you go through the process of making art, I think of Ito's full-page spreads straight away. something about the chaos, the fine detail, and the balance of it all really draws me in. I think it beautifully captures the subtle horrors of this story and draws them to the attention of the reader in that classic style of his.

in terms of what to actually include on the cover, I have a few ideas that walk the line between dazai fanart and nlh-inspired:

needles: a nod to Mersault and Yozo's addiction. indicates dark themes and a story of one's life told via addiction (to which you could argue, Yozo was always addicted to something. I'm sorry, aot will always be within me now)

a glass of whiskey: incites buraiha, both fictional and real, and again, one of Yozo's addictions.

cigarettes and/or matches; match boxes (say it with me... addiction!)

a gravestone: odasaku; the general vibe of death

it'd also be cool to make the cover look like one of Yozo's comics, but instead of depicting his characters, depict Yozo (or even Dazai!), though this runs the risk of looking too cartoonish. or maybe a rendition of his most perfect self-portrait?

perhaps a portrait that reflects not only Yozo, Dazai (fictional) or Dazai (real), but whoever looks at it? a portrait to reflect the reader, and humanity?

HELLO. About those tags on my Frankenstein post..

What do I think about it?

Book? Second favorite book ever, plan to reread it soon and I adore it. The only book I prefer over Frankenstein is the count of Monte Cristo, which is another can of worms entirely.

I think Frankenstein is good and a must read for everyone. Obviously yes the story is good but the sheer amount of misinformation about it pisses me off so very much and that would be fixed if reading the book was mandatory for living /lh. There's two (main (don't worry about the rest)) versions, 1818 and 1831. 1831 is the more famous one, basically Shelley just made some minor edits to things she didn't like. Best (and biggest edit) is that she removed the incest.

Sorry I am going to talk about multiple versions of the story.

Musical? There's two, iirc. There's 'Frankenstein: a new musical' and 'young Frankenstein'. I have only listened to the former one because I am scared to learn what the latter is. All I know is that it uses a design for the monster that I hate, which is 97% of my reason for not listening to it.

The former is from 2008 and not very famous. The actors have absolutely AMAZING voices, like genuinely words cannot describe my love for Victor, the monster and Elizabeth's singing. The rest are good too, but it's those three that especially stick out to me.

It doesn't have a single bad song. Vibe wise, I'd say it's a bit like Jekyll and Hyde and Sweeney Todd. Lots of bangers but obviously only listen to it after reading the book. It's also a fairly faithful adaptation. There's only two major changes from the book and I like both of them.

Junji Ito manga adaptation? Ough. I'm only 50~ pages in so far but WOWZER it's amazing. Junjo Ito is the perfect mangaka for adapting Frankenstein. I was super excited to read it because I like some of Ito's other works so I'm very pleased that this one is good (so far (I've heard the entire thing is good though))

1931 movie? UGHH. I think it's good on its own. Completely divorced from the context of the book, it's good. Compared to the book though, absolutely dreadful.

Order you should consume them in?

1931 movie first so you can enjoy it properly, the actual book and then it doesn't matter if you do the musical or manga next. Also there's a 2004 two episode long mini series that I have not seen yet but supposedly it's a very good and faithful adaptation.

Would I recommend original language?

Idk. I've only read it in English but I'd imagine there's good French translations. It's one of the most famous books ever so there's absolutely a French fella who did an absolutely amazing and flawless translation. I'm sure there's also versions in English with updated more modern language but I think that classics should always be read in a version as close to the original as possible to preserve artistic intent.

had a few discussions with @diamonddung about the 'why gillman' question and it hit me with the latest one. we both thought it would be hilarious if homelander had been named john 'goodman'. it's on the nose for hella irony and maintains the 'average/most american name ever' vibe, but probably would have been disrespectful/caused legal issue for the real life actor of the same name

and the thing is that ennis tends to be deliberate and careful with his portrayals/criticisms, from cross cultural references/miscommunication to british/uk transphobia to victims self blaming, even the way white owned/run fame networks want to portray/box in black people as stereotypes

hell, this guy had a russian, british, american, and french guy all stomp the everliving fuck out of a nazi. that was intentional<3

so idk, it just seemed... odd that 'gillman' wouldn't get the same or similar care and thought that the other stuff did.

then come my frieeeeeennnn~<3 rambling and chattin' it up with AIs lmao. typoed 'godman' in place of goodman messing around (which THAT is a name on the nose LMAO, tho maybe too much or just clashin' with godolkin if ennis did think of this one), and then thought of codman (fallout 4 if you know you know~)

which made me start thinkin' to mahself... codman sounds kinda fishy and 'godish'. and then the jesus fish popped into mah head.

and then i realized that homelander is referenced to 'be like jesus' for the public in both comic and show and it seemed to click. idk, could be me being a sleepless lunatic at the weirdo's hour with the late night ramblin's~<3 maybe someone else has thought of and mentioned this

ennis coulda straight up chose gillman at random cause he knew it would fuck with peoples' heads and make them question it to high hell

MONTHLY MEDIA: August 2022

Ugh summer is drawing to a close and it all went by too quickly. Like it does every year. But here’s how I spent my time when I wasn’t making the most of this fleeting weather.

Prey (2022) Really great! Though my stress levels max out whenever there’s a best bud dog friend so I’d like to watch it again now knowing how it all plays out. Really smart setups and payoffs and everything felt earned. Just a joy to watch.

High Fidelity (2000) At first I was worried that John Cusack’s character was going to be celebrated but then a customer pretty swiftly takes him and his buds down a peg and I realized: the movie knows these dudes are awful. Funny in a way I wasn’t expecting and still disappointing that Laura ends up back with him.

The Bachelorette (Episode 19.05 to 19.08) I wish there were more opportunities for the leads to hang out and discuss what’s going on, but I get that it’s already so crammed full of stuff. While only 31, Gabby is a perfect example of why casting some sliiiiiightly older leads would be great for the series.

The Handmaid’s Tale (Episode 1.01 to 1.10) This is an exercise is sitting with sadness. It just...constantly feels so bleak. Though I will give that the small moments of rebellion feel that much bigger in contrast to the suffocating bummer of the world. Everyone in Gilead loses but it just takes longer for some to realize it. Oof.

Stranger Things (Episode 4.01 to 4.09) I wasn’t planning on returning to this series but after enough suggestions to check it out, I gave it a go. Pretty good! I was also warned about the Russian subplot and while I didn’t find it to drag too much, it was a reminder of just how many characters and different threads are going on. Wild that they mostly pulled it off and I’m now interested in the final season.

Come as You Are: The Surprising New Science That Will Transform Your Sex Life by Emily Nagoski (Page 112 of 315) Really insightful read into the psychology of sex and arousal and intimacy. It’s assuming the reader is a cis woman BUT I’m learning so much and the research applies to all bodies and orientations. I know I’m only a third of the way into it but I can’t recommend it enough.

Devil House by John Darnielle (Abandoned) Great title, great cover, and not at all representative of the contents inside. Not to say it’s not well-written or engaging. I tried to shift gears but I really wanted a good (maybe even a slightly pulpy) horror and the story is...not that. If you’re into following the creative process of a true-crime author, this is for you.

Junji Ito’s Cat Diary: Yon & Mu Collector’s Edition (Complete) I haven’t read much of Ito’s horror work but you can see it every once in a while in this collection. It also makes me realize how much comedy plays a role in horror as this book is also very funny in a way that doesn’t make it feel like a comedy. Like the humour just stems from life and not from jokes and gags, if that makes sense?

Chew Volume 1: Taster’s Choice by John Layman and Rob Guillory (Complete) So gross. I mean it’s a really creative setting and premise, but each issue had something that made me go “ew”. Maybe that’s the point? Very 90s gross-out and too-cool vibes.

Oz: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) This month the group dug into the library system, tried to find books relating to cults, and discovered the mayor of Munchkin is involved! Political intrigue followed and you can read all about it over here.

Neverland: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) The Mof1 group took a detour, found a very large crocodile, and decided to pull a Magic School Bus and explore the inner workings of this reptile. So far they’ve found the ear canal, lungs, and a stomach acid lake full of magic items and half-digested pirates! We have fun.

What was up with the dices?

Canonweissmon was in Perfect state longer than the other two, yet, he was not the first who reached the time limit. Was Gulus had a hand in it?

How did Dagomon get here? Was it the Voice or other entity? I thought the Voice’s purpose of sending Digimon to human world was to avoid the plague in digital world. It made no sense for them to send a corrupted Digimon to real world and jeopardised the humans and the uninfected Digimon.

The Delivery Cat is the strongest.

The digital world’s disappearance affected internet and technology in the real world?

Terriermon in a lab coat. Are they like Agumon Hakase? Hard to believe a Digimon known for their hyperactivity could sit long enough to study and became a professor.

I completely forgot Hokuto and Gammamon were close.

Everything was scary, but Hokuto’s serious face was the most terrifying.

I thought the plague only affected Digimon. I did not expect humans could get infected too… despite the many evidences that humans in this world was susceptible to body horror and other Digimon-related ailments, I still in disbelief.

The weather usually starts to get warmer in October. However, this October was cold and rainy. It was the perfect atmosphere for my spooky reads! I read almost all the books from my tbr and managed to listen to some great audiobooks.

Talking about all the books I read in October under the cut.

In reading order:

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (x) (x) (x) (x)

The first part of Mexican Gothic had everything from the Gothic novels I love, the old mansion, the dark ambiance, the weird dreams at night. But the second part just blew my mind! The story is clever and the atmosphere gets even more suffocating and thrilling. I also liked how it discusses topics like Eugenics and Colonialism. It’s a new favorite!

The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward

It was super thrilling! I didn't see the plot twists coming, and it was super effective for me. It makes you think about who is truly the monster and who we are used to seeing as the villain in horror novels.

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas (x) (x)

It was a quick and magical read. It deals with many heavy topics such as deportation, homeless youth, gang members, but it is treated sensitively, and the story still manages to be sweet and lighthearted.

Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage

Books about creepy children! I usually enjoy stories about the horror of motherhood, and the child in question is scary, cruel, and intelligent. It freaked me out how manipulative she could be. As for the mother, the book also discusses the intersection between motherhood and disability that is very interesting.

Tomie 1 by Junji Ito

Tomie was nice, it’s scary and nightmare-ish like other Junji Ito’s works!

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #1 by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa with Robert Hack (Illustrator), Jack Morelli (Illustrator)

I don't know what it is exactly, but it was not for me. I’m not a fan of the art style, but the creepy vibes are on point. Maybe I should read the next one to see if my interest changes.

Lobizona by Romina Garber

It was a magical and fun read! I love the worldbuilding, and the immigrant issues discussed, and the overall Latine representation! But I didn't know this is a series, and I don't think I'll continue to read. I'm not in the mood for book series right now.

Teddy Spenser Isn't Looking for Love by Kim Fielding

It was a fast-paced and sweet story. There's a lot of things that happen in this book that are not realistic, and I think they fall in love too quickly, but if you enjoy forced proximity, you'll enjoy it.

Geek Love by Katherine Dunn (x) (x) (x)

It's a very dark and twisted story. It deals with a cult and very complicated and sinister family relationships. It seemed like the right amount of horror and character analysis that I’d love to read. However, I’m not sure what happened, but I caught myself not wanting to pick the book up, and it took me longer than I expected to finish. Nevertheless, there are so many horrific things in the plot, and the characters are so fascinating that the book still left a deep impression on me.

Horrid by Katrina Leno

The plot twist in this one was really good! It's creepy and spooky, but it was a bit slow for me. I think the main character was a bit boring, though.

When the Reckoning Comes by LaTanya McQueen

It was super spooky! The plot is engaging, and the mystery is creative. I loved the atmosphere of the restored plantation, and the historical aspects are well-done.

Fragments of Horror by Junji Ito (x) (x) (x)

I enjoyed Fragments of Horror a lot! What I like about Ito’s horror is it doesn’t need an explanation to exist. People go to extremes because of their obsessions, everything has the potential to be monstrous, and the art is pretty shocking.

My Games of the Year 2021

Nothing much with this post. I’d just like to gush in a super biased way about the games that I had the most fun with this year! They are also all in my “LOVES” collection in Steam, so yep. These are faves in NO PARTICULAR ORDER. 

I replayed all of these today, too (mostly 2-3 hours worth of gameplay and skipping the cutscenes except DMC 5′s)~~

1. Blasphemous

This is a game that was love at first sight for me. Its imagery is familiar due to my own roots in my religion of Roman Catholicism. It is my first go at a Metroidvania-styled game, and boy was it brutal to the core. Merciless like The Miracle itself. 

Lots of FREE DLCs came out this year for this game, including the final one, and going through the entire game again to see that ending for myself is truly a fulfilling journey. 

2. Tales of Arise

What else can I say about this game? Aside from it being my “GOAT” (as people say it) this year, it is my gateway back to the Tales franchise. The only other Tales game I finished was Tales of the Abyss, and that game had such an impact. 

I can safely say the same thing about this game in terms of impact and effect on me. The characters, the story, the BOMBASTIC gameplay~~ Getting this game to 100% just shows how much I enjoyed and loved this game with all my heart. 

Everyone has its gripes with this game for some reason, but who doesn’t? Still, I am thankful that they released another amazing Tales game, and getting the millions of sales so quickly that it deserves. I mean, this blog is pretty much Tales of Arise-centric, that’s how powerful this game is for ME haha. (Yes, I replayed my new game until I reached Law hence why this screenshot exists in my fave outfit of his... My fave chara ever... Precious wolf pup boyo and Zephyr cRIES)

3. Devil May Cry 5

I’ve been playing this on Steam since last year, and no words cannot express how thankful I am that DMC 5 exists. Like other DMC fans, it was a bummer of having no news about a DMC 5 after the events of DMC 4. 

And I remember playing through Vergil’s DLC again this year, and how the story, in all its fanservice-y glory, is just absolutely amazing and ties everything together. The gameplay is no-brainer coz it’s perfected to a tee. Truly a stellar work. I thought I’d be rusty when I played it earlier, but nope, Nero main till the end, babyyyy. Can’t wait to continue the party that will never stop bein’ crazy!

4. World of Horror

When I first purchased this, of course the appeal was the Junji Ito and H.P. Lovecraft-inspired elements. The pixel art drew me in as well. Music is chef’s kiss. The gameplay is something I couldn’t vibe with at first. 

But just a little reading was enough to make me appreciate how it is meant to be played. I can’t wait to keep on unlocking achievements, and luckily there is more content to play around with thanks to the update from the developer~~ I will never get enough of this. It’s my go-to game when I don’t feel like playing or doing anything else.

5. Hades

Wow, this game. Aaaaa~~ I remember my first time playing this. It was basically, “ok let’s try this out” [3 hours passed] “oH HECC I WANNA SLEEP BUT I WANNA SEE WHAT HAPPENS MORE” until I managed to beat the Lord of the Underworld himself. And today, I just happen to reach the epilogue, but I still have yet to reach the 100% in achievements. 

It’s so easy to get back into this game even if I don’t play it as often (like as in daily), and go through an entire run and discover new things in every playthrough. What’s not to love about this game, really? The art style, gameplay, characters, dialogue, etc. are ALL phenomenal period.

idk my intro to this fetish was p indirect, like a certain episode of aeon flux that left a very strong impression, or like, mangas i read as a teen like junji ito’s stuff or the extremely nihilistic gantz (wonder if that would hold up on a reread... doubtful). for a long while i was in denial and would never tell anyone about the content of those fantasies but idk, something has finally shifted there (possibly too far to the other side).

i have a vague theory about the desired vibe and what makes it work but it’s still kinda half-baked. i think it’s like, emotionally you need something there: the standbys are a degree of irony or contradiction, (e.g. the person is enjoying getting disembowelled or dismembered and we’re invited to share in that, or looking serene as their head turns into a kind of anatomical spiral), perhaps framing the scene as something very intimate, or at least like just you take the effort to build up some emotional intensity so it’s not just generic hentai personality activates ahegao mode. which requires putting the effort to like, impart them actual subjectivity through whatever means you see as appropriate! you lose that entirely if the implied pov is a vague masculine figure doing the violence, like if the message is ‘imagine fucking up this girl like meat’ it’s like, eh. this isn’t actually what i’m looking for, i want to take the girl’s pov!

the aeon flux episode that i remembered most, of everything in that show, does a lot of things: we have this very off-kilter situation where a woman is trying to escape from a country across a dangerous militarised border (she can see the other side from ehr window), and damages her spine. the surgery is performed by trevor, the dictator, and framed as a sex thing which can be seen across the border. when she’s not trying to escape, or using her broken spine to wriggle halfway through the border wall to kiss her partner, the woman works at a factory making an unidentifiable gadget. on her final attempt, she finally makes it halfway across the border gate, only to have the machines she was creating pop out, sever her legs, and then immediately sew up the wound so like her legs are on one side and the rest of her is on the other. the whole episode’s project is to develop a certain, extremely powerful vibe; without the buildup, the final scene on its own wouldn’t be nearly so affecting. it’s technically all sfw, but that episode really helped install something in younger!bryn... i’d never seen anything like that.

one thing i used to fantasise about a lot was like... gadgets where someone would have to like stick their arm in a hole to press a button or something and that would achieve a desired end but also cause a guillotine blade to come down and cut it off (which may be the end in itself!). i guess a key part of it was that this was always deliberate (the same goes for cyborg surgery). a little while ago, [a certain person :p] linked me this picture where like a girl was in a contraption with various blades poised to cut her limbs off/expose her guts/etc. but she had to like, press buttons to activate them (and, predictably, did), and she couldn’t have picked a better picture to convince me to just admit ok yes i like this stuff lmao. for a while i thought of this as like, oh, i’m a coward, even in safe fantasy land i can’t just admit i’m into guro without carefully constructing a constrained segment that is sanitised and very clearly labelled as consensual, but actually a quick survey of what reddit (lol) thinks is good guro convinces me that no, it’s much narrower than just ‘ppl get bits cut off’.

another component that seems to be good for me is like, a certain sort of unphysicalness/fascination with anatomical detail. that is, cuts are extremely perfect and clean and show a cross-section of the body. this is a big part of what makes kago’s work so effective, like it’s spirals and stuff but they’re informed by actual anatomical structures. i think it’s like... poking at the fascination with all this mysterious matter inside us... the elegant structures that we never see when we’re alive. i was very fascinated with the process of GRS, the way bits of flesh can be like cut apart and pulled through each other and sewn back up. (even if i have complicated feelings about the result.)

still need to poke at the contours of this one but hey, i can draw now, so i’ll make stuff that I like and idk, maybe other people will be into it too. if that’s not your thing then like, valid lol, i won’t just be drawing this stuff but it’s been pretty fun to like... let that out and discover that actually it’s not evil and my friends might even enjoy the stuff i make >///<

1. The one with the monster at good will

• didnt actually ever see said monster. Really plays on fear of the unknown. Good writing!

• really nice emptiness of the good will. Just enough of a sense of safety since other people were close by. Really made it more scary and impactful

could u recommend some steam horror games!! (specifically retro indie games)

yeah of course! I can’t remember 100% all of these games, but many of them contain common triggers (particularly body horror, suicide, and sexual assault)  so please be aware of that!! Also, because a lot of these are 15+ years old, they contain racism and homophobia typical of older content, unfortunately.

-The Penumbra Collector’s pack ($9.99, 2007) comes with Black Plague and Overture, two of my all time favorite horror games. Similar to Amnesia, just a very back-to-basics survival horror game. Has some of my personal favorite twists and scares!

-The Still Life pack ($14.99, 2002) is a series of point and click horror games about solving murders. The games themselves are far from perfect, but they have a great vibe and atmosphere.

-World of Horror ($14.99, 2019) is a game done in the style of retro horror manga. It’s gorgeous and super fun, but still in early access! It feels like you’re walking around a Junji Ito manga :’)

-The Witch’s House (free for lq ver, $14.99 for hq ver, 2012) is a brilliant RPG horror game done in the style of many, much older horror rpgs. Steam also has some other classic horror RPGs that I’d definitely check out, as well!

-Corpse Party ($14.99, 2016 rerelease of 1996 game). I know I mention this one on every list but it’s one of my all time favorites!! It’s a retro horror rpg with some really genuinely disturbing and thought-provoking content.

-Misao Definitive Edition ($4.99, 2011) A retro-styled horror RPG that has some interesting twists. A shorter version of the game is also offered for free.

-Condemned:Criminal Origins ($14.95, 2006) I haven’t played this one yet, but I’ve heard great things about it. A horror shooter game where you solve supernatural murders.

-Harvester ($5.99, 1996) “The most violent adventure game of all time” is kind of an oversell, haha, but it lives up to that title in some ways!! It’s a great classic horror/gore game, especially if you’re into vintage games.

-Saya No Uta: Song of Saya ($14.99, 2019 rerelease of 2003 game) is known as one of the darkest mainstream visual novels. It’s about a student who begins to see everything as flesh and gore, except for a beautiful monster named Saya.

-I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream ($5.99, 1995) Is a tale about outsmarting an evil computer that utilizes a lot of psychological concepts. It’s an awesome game that I’d strongly recommend.

-Togainu No Chi: Lost Blood ($14.99, 2020 expanded release of 2005 game) Another visual novel known for its extremely dark content, togainu no chi is an “erotic” horror story about a young man surviving in the wasteland left of Japan after WWIII. Also, I want to warn that this game contains EXTREMELY graphic depictions of sexual assault, and includes many topics that are often seen as too intense (even for the horror genre), so please be wary going into this game.

Of course, Steam also has some classics like Resident Evil, FEAR, The Crooked Man, etc.! I didn’t include those, just in case you’d already been through them! I hope that helps! <3

ART SCHOOL | INTERVIEW WITH JUSTINE JONES

Baltimore based artist and illustrator Justine Jones creates her vein of psychedelic fantasy horror drawings–filled with tiny black lines and an occasional pop of bright colors–which have been featured on the covers of Kobold Press and Warlock magazine. Using the hashtag #VisibleWomen to amplify the voices and portfolios of women comic artists, Justine has be able to do more illustrative work and character design. We’re excited to find out more about Justine’s artistic journey, her love of role-playing games, comics, art, her influences and much more. . .  Take the leap!

Introduce yourself?    Hi, I’m Justine!  I’ve lived in Baltimore Maryland for the past decade and currently live in a small apartment downtown with my partner and my shiba inu Mo, who is a cool and grumpy guy.

How would you describe your work to someone who is just coming across it? I used to call it storybook surrealism, but now I guess it’s more like psychedelic fantasy horror?  Monsters and Wizards.  Lots of tiny black lines, sometimes with lots of bright intense colors.

How did you start from doodling and drawing to what you do now? I feel like it sort of happened organically.  When I was younger, I would do just pencil drawings, and then in my late teens, I got more into using micron pens.  I didn’t really discover color until a few years ago, so I’m a huge color noob.  I think a lot of it also came from working in comic shops for years and going to conventions.  Seeing all of these amazing artists grow, and thinking hey, I could maybe also do that! I first started with t-shirt designs because it just seemed really fun, and I used to have a really hard time selling prints.  People don’t need more prints, but they can always use clothes!  Now i’m getting more into illustrative work and character design, and I’m loving it!

Who and what were some of your early artistic influences? When I was a baby, my dad hung an Aubrey Beardsley print over my crib.  My mom thought it would make me deranged, and maybe it did, but it also made me love ink work and Art Nouveau style haha.  I was obsessed with sword and sorcery stuff and loooved cartoons like He-Man and She-ra, and later, Pirates of Darkwater. I also spent a lot of time in elementary school copying sexy comic book ladies from 90s comics, and I know that is pretty far from what I do now, but it’s honestly how I learned to draw.  I also copied a lot from children’s storybooks when I was little.  

What are some things that inspire the drawings you make? What are some of your favorite creatures and beings you like to explore in your art? Video games are a huge inspiration to me, from SNES JRPGs, to games like Dark Souls and Bloodborne.  Also folklore and mythology from around the world, and fantasy artwork from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s.  Basically anything fantasy.  My favorite things to draw are wizards and monsters.  I love body horror, anything disgusting and beautiful at the same time.  I take a lot of inspiration from Manga, like Berserk, or anything Junji Ito.  I’ve done a lot of Illustrations for Clark Ashton Smith stories, which I find endlessly inspiring, visually.  Just like, fantasy/ sci fi/ dying earth type stuff.

When did you start collaborating with Kobold Press on creating some awesome fantasy art covers for their publications?  I remember getting the email from them when I was on the way to Necronomicon Providence in 2017.  I thiiiink they found my stuff through the visible women hashtag on twitter?  I was very excited because I owned some of their adventures from back in the day when I played Pathfinder!!  Plus, I have always always wanted to draw things for table top RPGs, so it’s been really cool to actually do it! The Warlock mag that I’ve been doing covers for is awesome because it’s going for an old school DND vibe, but it’s all things that are made for 5th edition.  You can get it on their patreon, and I hiiiighly recommend it to anyone who plays 5e dnd!!  

Take us through your artistic process? What’s a typical day in the studio like? Haha extremely chaotic!  I don’t even have a real set workspace, which I really need to change, I just draw where ever. Just chill out, listen to music or a podcast, and draw.  If I’m further along in a drawing and don’t need to focus so much, I’ll watch movies or video gameπ– let’s plays while I’m drawing.  I also love to listen to/ watch things that are in theme with what I’m drawing, to give me some inspiration.  I try to go to coffee shops to change things up sometimes!  Basically I just do a bunch of sketches until something materializes, and then I will just slowly refine the sketch.  I guess it’s not that exciting, but it’s cool to see the first sketch and the finished product because in my head, the sketch always looked like the finished product, but when you go back to look at it, it’s usually just indecipherable scribbles.

What are your essential art tools and materials? 90% of my art is just done using a .05 mechanical pencil and micron pens.  I also draw everything on smooth bristol.  If I have time and want to make my lines super crisp before I scan them in, i will use a light box.   Then for color, I generally use Kyle T Webster brushes in Photoshop with my Wacom tablet.   If I’m on the go, I like to draw things in Procreate on my iPad Pro, but I’m definitely not as good at doing detailed lines digitally.  

What do you do when you’re not drawing or working on projects? How do you unplug? Haha, I wish I ever truly unplugged, I think my brain is now melded into the internet!  But mostly I love to play video games.  JRPGs and anything From Software/ Soulsborne (currently obsessed with Sekiro!)  I also love comics and manga.  I’ve been reading The Girl From the Other Side, which is a beautiful dark fairytale Manga by Nagabe.  I also just got one called Witch Hat Atelier, which has the most amazing art! My partner also owns an insane amount of board games, so we play a lot of those.  I’m obsessed with coffee, and work part time at a coffee shop, and my favorite thing in the world to do is eat good food.    

What has been the most challenging project you’ve worked on? How did you overcome those obstacles and what did you take away from it? I made a kind of cosmic horror short story in mini comic form last year for SPX, I had very little time,  and it was my first time actually writing a story/ dialogue to go with my pictures.  It was insanely challenging.  I ended up with a finished product that I’m really proud of and that I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback on.  I think it really drove home the fact that I just need to stick with things and finish them, even if I don’t feel like they’re perfect.  I’m never going to have the time that I want, and I’m never going to feel like anything is perfect.  I can still make a great thing!  

What advice would you give someone who wants to follow in your footsteps and pursue art? Don’t spend 4 years doing nothing, but playing World of Warcraft (Or doooo?).  Uhhh, believe in yourself.  Be nice to other artists.  Draw all the time! Immerse yourself in things that inspire you!  Also, like I said before, things don’t need to be perfect.  Let go of perfect, because sometimes it’s an unattainable ideal.  Just do as good as you can, and don’t beat yourself up so much!  I’m horrible at advice!!!

What’s your best Art School tip that you want to share with folks?   Haha, I moved to Baltimore to go to MICA like, 14 years ago, and then realized I was poor, and would never be able to go to MICA… sooo… I never went to real art school.  I wanted to go so bad, and I still wish I’d had that experience, but I want other people who can’t afford it to know that you don’t NEED it.  Things are a bit harder, but you can find so much free info online if you have the drive, you can teach yourself so many things.  Don’t get discouraged just because art school isn’t gonna happen for you.

What are your favorite style of VANS? I love my lavender/ sea fog Authentic Vans, because they basically go with anything, but I am always eyeing those Sk8-His.

Anything you can share that is coming up?   Ahhhh, I have some realllly cool things that I can’t share yet, but just everyone keep an eye out (It will be very exciting, i swear)!!  As for things I can share, I’m working on some new t-shirt designs, and another comic, and also plan on drawing some more cool wizards in my spare time.   So if you wanna see some cool wizards, uhhh, come to my Instagram–you guys!  Let’s hang out and look at wizards.  And talk about wizards.  And if you don’t like wizards well, don’t come I guess.
