#planner for a magical 2020
belovedapollo · 1 year
Note
love your posts about your notebooks for 2023!! Would it be alright to ask what you'll be using each notebook for? I'm trying to figure out my own planning system for the next year :>
Hi! I’m glad you enjoy them :’) I’ll explain a bit about them below:
Tumblr media
I have a five years diary from Leuchtturm 1917 and I’ve been using it since 2020. I mainly use it to write one or two lines each day about how I felt and what was on my mind. Really putting it simple and just straight to paper. Recently I purchased two notebooks from Midori, which I really wanted to try out. One of them is a slim planner for daily tasks and overview of deadlines and appointments. Then a notebook to use as bullet journal. In my bullet journal I write down my goals for the year first and then divide the pages in the 12 months. For each month I do a cover, goals for the month, money tracker, habit tracker, movies I’ve watched, books I’ve read and daily songs that I’ve listen to. Then we have my grimoire which is a notebook from moleskine that I’ve been using as grimoire. I am very interested in magic and witchcraft and in my grimoire I track down various things such as tarot readings, spells I’ve tried out and different information and things I’ve learnt. Then I got a new blank moleskine today which I’ll use as my coping mechanism to just write whatever comes in my head and what has me overthinking. I’ve been doing this for years and it helped me to deal with things. Another notebook that I’ve got (which is also not pictured above), is a Moomin colorbook which also is a diary. I plan to use that one as my graduate diary to write down each day one thing that made me happy. This year I felt that I’ve done not much of that so I’m picking up for next day. I also want to point out that all the journal / notebooks I’ve purchased were on sale besides the Leuchtturm one. And non of this is sponsored :D if you have more questions feel free to ask away 💚 I hope this was kinda helpful!

Flynn Gabriel Nowak
Flynn was surprised to find out that he could use magic. His family even more so and years later they find out his younger sister was a witch too. His parents disagreed and put Flynn into muggle high school to further his football career and his chances to get into university if football doesn't work out. However, an incident at High School left him expelled due to his magical abilities thus forcing his parent to put Flynn into Hogwarts. Learning doesn't come easy (might be due to undiagnosed ADHD) to Flynn but playing quidditch and football does. Actually quidditch became a great replacement for football at Hogwarts. Most of the time though Flynn has no idea what has doing and kinda just follows his guts, especially after Hogwarts. Flynn tried and failed to make it into to football so he tried pursuing a career in quidditch but he didn't feel the same passion that he once had. Feeling defeated and unsure what he wants to do in life by taking fleeting jobs while mindlessly travelling until one job as working as a chef assistant discovering his love for cooking.

WIZARDRY
Wand: Rowan and Phoenix feather.
(Rowan wood has always been much-favoured for wands, because it is reputed to be more protective than any other, and in my experience renders all manner of defensive charms especially strong and difficult to break. It is commonly stated that no dark witch or wizard ever owned a rowan wand, and I cannot recall a single instance where one of my own rowan wands has gone on to do evil in the world. Rowan is most happily placed with the clear-headed and the pure-hearted, but this reputation for virtue ought not to fool anyone – these wands are the equal of any, often the better, and frequently out-perform others in duels.)

RELATIONSHIPS
Family:
Jan Nowak (father) - An American-Polish muggle nuclear engineer who was moved to Britain for the sake of his wife. He provides the best he can and wants to make sure that all his three children receive the best education and study at university to be successful adults. He also spread his passion for sports to his three children too.
Elizabeth Nowak (mother) - A British muggle pharmacist who meet Jan on a holiday resort. Out of her and Jan, she pushes higher education more on their children and expects them to pursue 'realistic' careers. She was deeply upset when she found out that two of her children were magically gifted and ruined her plans for their future.
Isla Nowak (older sister) - She was not gifted with magic and took education seriously. She inherited her parents passion for science and went to university to get a bachelor and a masters in biomedical sciences. However, Isla does have some jealously over her younger siblings magical gifts.
Friends:
Harper Nowak (younger sister) - A muggleborn like Flynn, Harper may have been gifted magic but again like Flynn has not been given book smarts. Harper is sorted into Hufflepuff and is super tight with Flynn while she struggles to relate to Isla. Harper is a very free spirited girl who can easily follow the wrong people unfortunately.
Michael Nowak (older half-brother) - His brother is the son from his dad's first marriage. They don't have much contact except for the occasional visit at their grandparents house.
Rory McTavish @the-al-chemist - Rory was the first one to help Flynn to navigate Hogwarts and introduce him to the wonders of the quidditch world.
Jonathan King @whatwouldvalerydo - One of his few mature friends who actually makes sure that Flynn doesn't get mislead or taken advantage of. It can be tiring naturally but Flynn always knows that he can count on Jonathan for anything.
Phil Baker @samshogwarts - Another fellow Gryffindor who he loves to play video games with but doesn't understand half of the references sometimes.
Dylan Amari @lifeofkaze - Flynn likes Dylan and doesn't understand why he hates Rory while Rory says they're friends. Anyhow, Flynn thinks that Dylan is a nice guy and finds him nicer when he isn't with Rory.
Reva Amari @lifeofkaze - Reva always makes sure to inform Flynn about the wizarding world. Why shouldn't he trust her? After all she grew up in the wizarding world and she knows a lot about magic. Plus they're teammates and teammates would never lie, right?
Nova Mae @kc-and-co - He is impressed at the many talents she posses and thinks she super smart because she is a Ravenclaw.
Dana Parkin @lifeofkaze - Dana decided to adopt Flynn, the tall bean that he is and looks after him to make sure that Flynn is coping well at Hogwarts.
Love interests:
Zola Albatross - Flynn developed a crush on Zola during his fourth year and finally asked her out in his fifth year. When Flynn felt that they could get serious, Zola broke up with him but remain friendly. But then they sort of got back together in Flynn's last year before he graduated but it was shirt lived. But they keep bumping into each after Hogwarts so maybe they are meant to be.
Rivals:
So far has none because he is a sweet boy.
Ancestry: Flynn doesn't know that his paternal grandmother was a squib and that her parents (his great-grandparents) were an American witch and an Irish wizard named Oscar Rosewood who currently resides in Azkaban. His great-grandfather, Oscar was also adopted by Glenn Rosewood.

Elemental ★★½
Tumblr media
I remember the first time I saw the trailer for Pixar Animation Studios’ Elemental a few months ago. It was at a theater with a group of friends who, like myself, had grown up with the first wave of Pixar films in the late nineties and early two-thousands. We all had fond memories of the Little California Studio that Could—the company who beat the seemingly invincible Walt Disney Animation Studios at their own game over and over at the box office and the Oscars. While the Mouse floundered with bland, forgettable comedies, Pixar gained a reputation for movies unafraid to exercise the audience’s hearts and tear ducts. Once, the release of a new Pixar movie was an Event with a capital “E.” Then came their 2006 merger with Disney and something…changed. While still capable of the occasional film with the old Pixar magic—Inside Out (2015) and Coco (2017) come immediately to mind—the innovators who gave the world talking toys, soft-shoeing robots, and balloon houses became a conveyor belt of Good-Not-Great sequels, prequels, and direct-to-streaming releases. When the credits of the Elemental trailer flashed, my friends and I sat in bewildered silence, looked at each other, and laughed.
Perhaps we were unfair. By all accounts, Elemental wasn’t the Pixar-on-autopilot cash-grab the trailer seemed to suggest. Pitched way back in 2015 and largely based on director Peter Sohn’s memories of growing up in the States the child of Korean immigrants, the film is obviously a labor of love with the highest (and noblest) artistic intentions. It’s the story of two star-crossed lovers—one a lower-class fire element named Ember Lumen (Leah Lewis) and the other an upper-class water element named Wade Ripple (Mamoudou Athie)—living in Element City, a metropolitan wonderland peopled with anthropomorphic versions of the four classical elements of fire, water, earth, and air. After a painful meet-cute where Wade, a city inspector, almost puts Ember’s family’s shop out of business—long story—the two team up to solve a mystery threatening the entire fire element quarter of the city. Oh, and somewhere in there they fall madly in love. Elemental takes bold swings at such weighty topics as racism, the immigrant experience, class differences, and escaping parental expectations (the last being one of Pixar’s favorite themes as far back as Finding Nemo and The Incredibles in the early two-thousands). It also has the distinction of being one of the only Pixar romantic comedies since WALL-E (2008).
Unfortunately, Elemental isn’t particularly good. But it’s not bad, either, which is the problem. In today’s crowded animation marketplace, the most dangerous thing a film can be is mediocre: great films are remembered for their excellence, bad films for their notoriety. But mediocre films? Those are quickly forgotten. Frankly, I don’t see anyone remembering this film in a year or two any more than other Pixar missteps like The Good Dinosaur (2015) and Onward (2020). Too many of the story beats are cookie-cutter predictable, right down to Ember’s contrived falling out with her doting father to Ember’s even more contrived break-up with Wade at the start of the third act. Watching it, I couldn’t escape the impression that I was seeing something Frankensteined together from other, better Pixar movies.
Instead, Elemental is at its best when it steps back from the plot and lets the audience drink in the incredible world-building and art direction. Element City is one of the most dazzlingly realized locations in any Pixar film with exquisite, near obsessive detail poured into its every nook and cranny. Unlike many animated cities that feel like clones of real-world locations like New York City with a few strange buildings thrown into the background for flavor, everything about Element City feels constructed with a city planner’s eye for accommodating real-life creatures of fire, water, earth, and air. Consider, for example, the fire element quarter of the city where Ember lives. As the city was originally built with water elementals in mind, their neighborhood was reverse engineered between a series of drained canals. Since the city’s subway system is essentially a giant log flume ride, the sidewalks underneath their elevated lines are covered with drains to catch and dispose of spilled water so it doesn’t harm the fiery inhabitants. This is world-building of the highest degree, and I haven’t even mentioned the glass tower swimming pools of the water elementals, the tree-filled offices of the earth elementals, or the sky-high spherical sports stadiums of the air elementals.
Element City deserved a better story. The narrative’s need to shoehorn all its weighty themes like racism and classism around its uneven romance fails the latter at the expense of the former. It’s not that you can’t make a good romantic comedy that explores these ideas—this just isn’t one of them. I’ve heard that during production certain story ideas were nixed because the filmmakers wanted to save them for a potential sequel. Despite Elemental’s mediocrity, I hope it gets made, if only because I want to see this creative team take a crack at a better story worthy of Element City.

Plot Outlining
Time to cure plot outlining’s boogeyman status!
Brandon Sanderson mentions 3 styles of making a plot outline, on the planner-pantser spectrum. He incorporates elements from each, but each method can stand on its own.
Tumblr media
Traditional, But Sanderson
Sanderson’s preferred method. Meticulous where it counts, but still flexible.
This spin on the traditional, intimidating plot outline method removes the chapter-by-chapter drudgery.
Brief Character Bio for all important characters (1-3 paragraphs)
1 paragraphs for any other characters worth mentioning
Character arc description (if applicable)
Main Setting(s) - magic/technology, physical setting, and cultural setting. Remember Sanderson’s Iceberg Method spin here.
Plot archetypes - ex. the hero’s journey, master-apprentice subplot, heist, romance, etc. Writing Excuses has an episode on this. Note that the same archetype can be carried out very differently; ex. Remember the Titans vs Avengers: Endgame
Plot discovery - mixes the Braiding Roses method and the Yes, But method below. Write a list of necessary steps for each result in the Braiding Roses method. This will be grabbed from as you write.
The Climax and End are usually summarized in detail (1-2 pages)
Braiding Roses
Dave‘s preferred method, i.e. outlining backwards. (I can’t figure out who Dave is; I’ll edit this if I ever learn)
The idea is that thorns on a rose bush guard the roses in the long run, though they may clash as they first grow. To find their roots, you outline backwards.
Decide your final outcomes for plot structures, character arcs, etc.
Decide the starting point for each outcome
Bridge the steps between!
Note what keeps the simple solutions from happening
Once all bridges are made, intersperse steps between different chapters.
Yes, But
Mary Robbinette’s style as a discovery writer. She is an experienced author and a host of the Writing Excuses podcast.
When a character is in an awful situation and reacts in a reasonable, in-character way, does it work?
Yes, but something else has gone wrong
No, and the problem escalates
Outlining Tips
Stay flexible; your story may change when you actually write a scene or chapter. Just keep writing through the first draft!
If this isn’t enough detail, it is always a nice idea to make 1-3 goals for a scene to accomplish.
The Writing Excuses podcast has 15-minute episodes with related writing exercises. Sanderson, Robinette, and other authors rotate hosting.

Some notes from the Character Convocation vis-a-vis Braham Pie Day
For a Central Minnesota town of just under 1,800 population, Braham has managed to become especially famous for pie--and credit the Park Cafe downtown, popular with tourists heading to the North Shore via a legendary shortcut involving Hwys. 65, 107 and 23 in large measure, itself known for its pies and coffee, for providing the impetus for the annual pie celebration held annually on the first Friday in August and swelling its population several fold.
Originally intended to be held in 2020, but suspended owing to the coronavirus pandemic itself forcing suspension of the celebration that year, Snagglepuss and Huckleberry Hound, convocation planners par excellence when it comes to fellow Hanna-Barbera Funtastic types, decided to bring it there this year for another mix of character gathering and public "meet-and-greet" most ideally timed for just before the Minnesota State Fair. And what could turn out being better timing than following an underwater initiation ceremony relaunching the Peter Potamus' Travelling SCUBA Par-tay as Peter Potamus' Magic Divers which saw Snagglepuss and Huck initiated as honourary members and the Hair Bear Bunch recovering from bear mating season in the north woods, among other coincidences?
Braham Pie Day isn't exactly all about pie: There's also an arts and crafts fair which the Laydeez of Hanna-Barbera especially found fascinating and a softball tournament attracting its share of interest. Not to mention the crowds on Main Street, with plenty of meet-and-greet opportunities to pose for selfies and exchange conversation with fans. As for the bands, The Banana Splits passed through with their road trip of redemption (and entering some banana creme pie in competition, which may not have won in competition) and the Cattanooga Cats' Kitty Jo entering her "typically Southern" chess pie (which received a special recognition from the judges considering its novelty, in particular the use of white and yellow cornmeal) and peach cobbler.
Other entries from The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera in competition were huckleberry pie from Clementine (who else?), forest berry pie from Cindy Bear (representing Jellystone Park, encompassing blueberries, raspberries and loganberries), several Dream Pie variations (encompassing, as everybody knows, Dream Whip whipped topping mix and Jell-O instant pudding mixes; at least three entrants used sugar-free pudding mixes and received special recognition), Magilla Gorilla entering a twist on banana cream pie with vanilla wafer crumbs mixed into the cream mixture, Wally Gator offering an exceptionally tart key lime pie (using fresh-squeezed key lime juice and fat-free sweetened condensed milk), Snagglepuss and Hair Bear each proffering grasshopper pie and Sheena from The King's clique fixing up some French silk pie, even adding the chocolate curls on top. As well, Maw Rugg, Punkin Puss and Clue Club's Dottie entered various other fruit pies.
In sharing some banana cream pie with with some lost-touch fans (how else?), The Banana Splits' Bingo, along with a selfie or two, acknowledged that having their good name dragged through the muck (so to speak) with the horror-film variation was just too embarrassing for them to take sitting down; hence, going on road trip for as long as necessary hoping to have their name and image cleared for once.
Meanwhile, the Cattanooga Cats' Kitty Jo had to explain (and repeatedly) that chess pie has nothing to do with the game of chess, to begin with; "actually, it's more of a corruption of 'pie chest,' where pies would likely be kept until ready for serving." She also acknowledged that the cornmeal and vinegar were to prevent mold and spoilage from prolonged storage.
The Inevitable Tom and Jerry Chase Item: Passing through southbound from the Twin Ports via the legendary Braham Shortcut just as the crowds were arriving in the morning, becoming rather exhausted to the point of stopping at a convenience store to the south of town--and Jerry managing to exploit Tom's having a breakfast sandwich, hash browns and coffee to gain a two-mile lead.

My Digital Planner Journey
This post contains affiliate links. If you take action (i.e. make a purchase) after clicking my affiliate links, I’ll probably earn a few bucks which will help keep this website running or just to buy a cup of coffee. You know I only recommend products that I actually use, love and trust, right?
Hello planner lovers!
I am back in the blogosphere, and I am so excited to share my newfound love with you, which is digital planning.
In 2017, I was a stationery-obsessed and a traditional planner which includes lots of washi tapes, sticker sheets, planners, clear stamps, ephemera, and so on but in the first few months of 2020, my planning and journaling style has changed. I upgraded my planning process and style with the use of an iPad and Apple Pencil as my new medium to take notes and do creative planning. I love how convenient and efficient it is for me because I get to bring my iPad everywhere I go. I just need a strong internet signal for when I need to download stickers or pictures from online creative marketplaces, but once I have it on my local device, then I'm good to go.
While my husband and I were preparing for our wedding last 02-02-2020, I got a brand new and shiny iPad 7th generation as a wedding present from him and I can't wait to get started. I bought an Apple Pencil 1st gen while we were on our honeymoon cruise. I've actually asked him for an iPad Pro but you know, planning a wedding took a lot of our time and money (we did a beach wedding, that's why!) and so here I am, happy to announce that this blog will be all about planners - the tools, techniques and so much more!
Although, on my birthday the same year, I bought myself a hard-earned and well-deserved treat - that is the iPad Pro 12.9”. My husband has been very supportive, so he purchased the Apple Pencil 2nd gen and Apple Magic Keyboard. I feel like a total princess on that day! 😂
Join me in this journey, by having the right tools and apps, the possibilities are endless! Here’s how to get started in digital planning.

Shingle Residence in tune with nature
The plastic beauty of the building is architecturally designed in perfect harmony with the natural splendor of its surroundings and the needs of a patchwork family of 5 Kids.
The l-shaped structure takes the different lighting situations into account. The ground floor gives inside outside space for food Preparation, Cooking, Dining and Living. The upper Floor is hosting the individual rooms
A two-story studio window allows the western mystic light to filter through an old Hornbeam Tree in the center outside. A generous opening to nature in the Morning and the Evening are part of the magic natural ambiance which makes this place so special. Raw materials absorb the light, Larchwood shingles and copper cladding outside reflect the nature to the inside.
The quality and beauty of the project lay in hidden details, in the surprising views, in the play of light and shadow, and in the integration of landscape, garden, and interior into a Gesamtkunstwerk, an integrated and holistic masterpiece of architecture The interior design’s concept focuses on light and simple materials.
The space makes the interface between concrete ceilings and wood body felt. A central Chimney defines the open kitchen-dining area and is the center of the wooden floor sunken Living room.
Through the poetic dimension of natural light, the discovery of shadow, and the light touch of sunlight, rooms were created with the intention to touch the heart and soul. The art of controlling the natural and artificial light in the interior concept brings an immediate physical involvement of the people in the changing seasons’ underlines the volatility of the reality and the interdependence between humans and the natural environment. This requires an organic merge between architecture and nature.

I'm looking for tips and tricks for witchcraft-on-the-go, since I'm not living at home right now. Any thoughts?? Things I could find around the house or craft myself?

I'm two months behind. But here's my first page in my Amy Cesari planner. The artwork is absolutely beautiful and the planner size is pretty standard. I'm loving the first several pages which have perfect layouts for general information or to fill out a tarot reading for each month of the year (I really can't wait to get to this page!)

There's such a peaceful feeling to this coloring book as well. It will definitely help me meditate!
I'm looking forward to it!
