3. "What happened to your phenomenal immune system, huh?"
"I'll be home for tea tonight." Harrison’s text was optimistic, and Tai shook his head.
"Yeah, you sure?"
"Maybe ten minutes late."
"The food will be in the microwave. Drive safely."
In the end, Harrison wasn't actually too late, and he mainly blamed it on the traffic. Tai must have been upstairs with the kids when he made it in, putting them to bed, so he didn't want to interrupt. The last time he'd jumped in during bedtime, nobody had gotten any sleep.
He was somewhat on autopilot as he heated up his food, definitely just tired and not dizzy at all. He settled on the sofa with his mug of chocolate and plate of food, his leg tucked up under him. It had been a long day, but he couldn't shake the slight unease it was maybe more than that.
When Tai finally appeared downstairs, he was somewhat frazzled from trying to corral the kids into bed, but smiled genuinely at Harrison when he saw him.
“Hey, didn’t hear you come in.” He said, flopping onto the sofa next to him. “Everyone’s in bed.”
He glanced up. "I've only been in under half an hour. Everyone okay? You okay?"
“Yeah, Levi was having a bit of a meltdown because you weren’t here and me telling him you were at work wasn’t working. But we’re all okay.”
"Sorry. I was going to come up, I'm just…exhausted." He sighed, stabbing a vegetable. "Work's really taking it out of me."
“No, it’s okay.” Tai said softly. “I said you’d be home later and he eventually settled. I think he just worries when you’re not here. Are you okay?”
"They all do." He smiled sadly. "I hate that they worry."
“I know, but they’re so proud of you for what you do.”
He hummed, setting his plate down in favour of curling against Tai. "It doesn't make it easier."
“Are you sure you’re alright?” Tai said gently, wrapping his arm around him. “Not like you to leave dinner after work.”
"I've not left it." He tried to argue. "I'm just saving it for later."
“Mm, alright. What’s wrong?”
"Nothing. You're just comfy." He wasn't sure who he was trying to convince.
“Are you getting ill?” Tai asked, unable to stop the worry that flared. “Head bad? Chronic pain?”
"Stop fussing." He swatted at Tai good-naturedly.
“Mm, never.”
"I might have a bit of a headache, and…" He broke off to laugh. "I feel like Fao. I was gonna say my chest feels heavy."
“Fao’s a terrible example.”
"Exactly. I'm nowhere near that bad."
“Sure, sure.” Tai grumbled. “You need to be careful.”
"It's just a cough. I had Matt had a listen, there's nothing there at the minute."
“Of course you did.”
"'Cause I knew you'd worry."
“You know me too well.”
"I'm fine, really. I'll keep an eye on it and speak to my cons."
“You better be fine.” Tai grumbled.
"I will be." He shot him a grin, though he was quickly undermined by the coughing that had him on his side. "Just ignore that."
“Harrison.”
"What?" He whined in response. "It was just a tickle."
“Sounded awful.”
"Didn't feel great."
“Are you sure Matt couldn’t hear anything?”
"Nothing to admit me for." He murmured.
“Nothing and nothing worth admitting are two different things.”
"He said to call the GP in the morning."
“He should have sent you home if it was that bad. You can’t just leave things like everyone else can.”
"He did. I told him at the end."
“You’re lucky I love you.”
"I know."
"What happened to your phenomenal immune system, huh?" Tai teased.
"Oh, that? It fucked off with my immunosuppressants, and the kids chased it off screaming."
Tai laughed, leaning down to kiss Harrison on the nose. "Oh, I could see that."
"They're animals." He joined in the laughter.
"God, I wouldn't change them."
He hummed. "Me neither."

i hope yellowjackets never gives a clearcut answer vis a vis the whole "how much of it is the supernatural and how much of it is the trauma" question, but like, at this point my best guess for tai is that she physically has a screw loose in the most literal sense possible. like something is not right up there. and i don't even mean in the mental illness sense, they're all deeply traumatized and different shades of mentally ill at this point, but like- this degree of sleepwalking, and dissociating, and losing time? it's giving neurological damage, it's giving uniquely horrible and very strange form of traumatic brain injury. like that plane crash knocked something Loose i swear to god

one of the major problems i find with online discourse about antagonistic characters and storylines sourcing from novels is that some people cant see past what is said to what is meant- and that other people can, but in their perception of the implied lore, make overdue assumptions of plot and character.
for example: in svsss, it is heavily implied that qiu jianluo s/a'ed the original shen qingqiu, thus shaping his outlook on society in general: females are safe, males are not. this leads to point against him in the form of his favouritism for ning yingying, the only (afaik) female qing jing disciple and his habit of finding comfort in brothels. this is misconstrued by the original protagonist in the novel pidw, leading to a false misconception held by our protagonist, shen yuan, that shen qingqiu is a lecherous paedophile.
as the reader, there are a number of context clues given to tell us how that is not the case-- mostly found in the extras-- and are meant to challenge the worldview, make us realize that like shen yuan, we as the audience only know as much as the author will tell us. did shen jiu hate luo binghe specifically because his name reminded him of qiu jianluo? was he jealous of the potential luo binghe had? or was he merely looking for a target to take his anger out on?
it is not mentioned, therefore we do not know, and should not make assumptions on the canon behaviour of this character towards someone else.
however, this is often not understood by the overall fandom: either they completely look past the context clues that tell us, this character is more than they seem and instead jump straight to demonization without first considering context and setting, or they overcompensate for someone by making excuses to justify behaviour we do not have explanations for.
this is the reason why we have people who constantly demean and bully others in fandom: they cannot read or think for themselves past what is clearly shown to them and refuse to challenge the idea that the author may be deliberately feeding unreliable information to make a more interesting story, and it doesnt help that there are people attempting to justify behaviour that is specifically written to be bad.

I am asking you about the magic in KFP
thank you for asking!! this is gonna be an INSANE take from me, number one fantasy enjoyer of all time, but i... i really don't like the magic in kung fu panda.
every sequel in this series just ups the magic factor and i don't like it. kfp1 had just enough that i felt like it worked, and it was more of a mildly fantastical take on the actual technical science of acupuncture and nerves, which was super cool. in kfp2 the "inner peace" thing i ALSO feel worked, mainly because it tied in hugely with the entire rest of the story, the themes, and the text. it wasn't even about learning magic, it was ABOUT inner peace, and the "magic" that po was able to do at the end was about balance and harmony. it also sort of narratively functioned as a foil to the more "technological advancements" of lord shen's army.
i... i actually am not crazy about kfp3. i DID not like the full-blown spiritual power of chi that everyone could do, i didn't like kai as a villain on the whole (this is more about themes and narrative, which is a separate rant i have, but him being a "spirit warrior" was so ridiculous to me i laughed when he said it, rather than actually being intimidated.)
part of this is because it just plainly deflates the ending of kfp1 - po using the wuxi finger hold was like this HUGE thing that the whole movie had been building up to, and in kfp3 now EVERYONE can do it?? with ease?? i feel like it cheapens the intensity of the first movie's ending.
i have a harder time describing the second reason i dislike it, so please bear with me, but i feel like the magic elements in the third movie in particular (kai turning everyone into jade creatures, po's giant golden dragon), are... dissonant, to me. jarring? i feel like they are TOO over-the-top and these Big Important Things to the point it feels like this doesn't line up with the previously established rules of this universe. there was VERY little magic in the first movie at all - the nerve attack is more scientific; the only truly *magical* moments are oogway going to the spirit realm, and tai lung being sent there, and both of those times, it feels much less like characters are using magic, and much more like magic is happening to or through them.
but the BIGGEST reason it bothers me is because it is thematically wrong. despite the brief magical moments in the first movie, the story was NEVER about learning or using magic. in fact, it was the oppsoite; the story was literally about the fact that there WAS no magic! the whole point of the first movie, literally the entire message, was that there WAS no magic power! there was nothing magical about the dragon scroll!! there is no magic there is no secret ingredient it is just YOU and what you are going to do with the body and mind that you already have!!!!
for what it's worth, i know animated film trailers almost always suck, and kfp4 MIGHT surprise me, but i doubt it. the chameleon might be a cool character, but i truly believe if they included a chameleon character in kfp 1 or 2, their power wouldn't have been actual shapeshifting, just good kung fu and maybe camouflage abilities; definitely not a full-blown shapeshifting power. because the first two movies used supernatural abilities / events with just enough moderation that it struck a PERFECT balance between the themes of the story and the previously established rules and bounds of the universe.

28. Chronic Illness
@sicktember
Tai hated his stupid body sometimes. Not only had he ended up in hospital, which was bad enough, but now he couldn’t get his fucking sugars where they were supposed to be. His phone was always going off, alerts he was too high. He was doing everything right, trying desperately, but it just wouldn’t settle. Why was it that even though he was doing the exact same as he would at home, and yet it just wouldn’t come down.
It made him feel even worse, too. Not only was he dealing with his scope going wrong, but being high all the time made him just feel shocking. He was exhausted and just feeling so weak and wiped out. And he was fed up of the nurses tutting every time they took his readings. Plus, he was really fed up of being endlessly poked. He didn’t like needles at the best of times (though they were better when he was doing it himself, which of course he couldn’t do in hospital) and now they were constantly badgering him.
And then he had to see the diabetes nurse.
Great.
The first one he saw was nice. She was sweet, and kind to him, and made it feel like he wasn’t a complete failure. These things happen, she explained, you’re stressed and you’ve been through a lot, we’ll get there. So they’d come up with a bit of a management plan, changed his insulin dosing around a bit, and he’d felt a bit positive.
And then, after a day or so, the next one came in. She wasn’t so nice. He knew they were all fed up with him - he should have been able to go home days ago, but with his sugars out of control the doctors weren’t comfortable sending him home until they were more settled.
The moment this nurse walked in the room, Tai’s heart sank.
“So you’re having trouble with your blood sugar?” She asked, voice sharp.
Tai nodded, wishing Harrison hadn’t just gone back down to A&E. He could’ve done with a bit of moral support. “Uh, yeah. It’s staying high, despite extra insulin and that…”
“How long have you been diagnosed?”
THat should have been in his notes. “Uh, a year or so.”
“How old are you?”
“31.”
“Type 2 at 31? Goodness me.”
“No, uh, Type 1.” Tai corrected. Had she even read anything?
“You’re 31 and you’re telling me you were diagnosed with type one diabetes a year ago?”
“Yeah. Uh, late onset. I know, it’s unusual.”
“Hmm. Well, you’re not as active as normal.”
“Well, yeah, I’m stuck in hospital. Of course I’m not as active as usual.”
“Are you eating right? It’s hard when you’re in hospital, isn’t it?” Her voice was sickly sweet, and Tai huffed.
“Yeah. I am, actually. I’m really careful.”
She shot a pointed glance at the pile of snacks and sweets. "You don't have to lie to me."
"They're not mine. They're my boyfriend's."
“Of course they are. Why wouldn’t he take them with him?”
"He was just here!" Tai protested, hurt she wouldn't believe him. "He had to go to the ED."
“You really should know better than to have all that crap. No wonder your sugars are so high.”
"I'm not eating them!"
“You really ought to be more careful, at your age. You’re risking serious complications if you carry on like this.”
"You think I don't know?! I'm only here because my scope went sideways - which I only had to have because of the fucking diabetes in the first place. I'm not a kid. Don't treat me like one."
“Well, if you’re going to act like a child…”
"I want a different nurse."
“I’m the only specialist nurse seeing patients today, you’ve not got a choice I’m afraid.”
"Then I'll wait."
“You need reviewing today. You’re taking up a bed, you should’ve been discharged by now.”
"Then discharge me."
“I need to at least check your sugars.”
"No."
“No?” She looked shocked, and was about to say something else when the door opened and Harrison came in, spying the sweets on Tai’s cupboard.
“Oh thank fuck, there they are. Finn was about to fucking kill me, I forgot his sweets and he’s been in minors all afternoon, it’s -” He noticed the nurse standing there, coupled with the look on his boyfriend’s face. “Uh, hi?”
"I told you they weren't mine." Tai said, eyes narrowed. "I'll wait for the next nurse."
“Everything okay, love?” He asked, moving closer to Tai.
Tai shook his head, reaching out to wrap his arms around Harrison’s waist, burying his head in his chest. '"No."
Harrison slipped an arm around his boyfriend, and then turned back to the nurse. “What have you done to upset him?”
“I was simply explaining to Mr Cole here that he needs to be very careful with what he’s eating.”
"Accused me of lying about your sweets. Basically said I was causing all the problems on purpose. "
Harrison’s gaze darkened. “They’re my sweets, aside from the few Tai keeps in case of a hypo, which he never touches unless he needs to. You really think he’s doing this on purpose?”
"It's hard to keep on top of your sugars in hospital, you're not in your normal routine and it's easy to eat food you're not supposed to. And getting diabetes so late in your life has to be from doing something wrong."
Taidgh didn't think Harrison could get more mad, but his arms crossed. "I'm sorry, you're blaming my boyfriend's diabetes on him doing 'something wrong'? Do you know how diabetes actually works? You're expecting us to trust you after that? Jesus Christ."
The nurse looked shocked. “Well, uh, you do realise, uh, the implications of high blood sugars? The potential complications? This, uh, this is very important.”
"I'm a consultant in the emergency department. I think I know."
It was as though she’d only just seen the scrubs, the embroidery on his chest. “Ah…”
"So I think his request to see another nurse should be fulfilled, don't you?"
“Uh, I’ll see what I can do.” The nurse said, and quickly disappeared.
Harrison turned to Tai, brushing his hair from his face. "You okay?"
Tai nodded. “Yeah. I just hate this stupid fucking disease.”
"I know. Its not fair. None of this is."
“And now I’ve made you miss work.”
"I'd happily miss it for you."
“But still.”
He kissed his boyfriend. "Still nothing."
“I wish I could go home.”
"I wish you were home too."
“I don’t want to be here, I’m just taking up a bed, being an inconvenience.”
"Don't be stupid."
“It’s true.”
"Of course it's not." He said softly, hands cupping Tai’s face. "You're never an inconvenience."
“I am to them. I’m young.”
"You're not, love. I promise you, you're not."
Tai managed the ghost of a smile. “Calling me old?”
"If it makes you smile."
“Dickhead.”
"I love you too."

Being an artist with very amateur meta writing skills leads me to looking insane whenever I try to rank my favorite art style eras of media I'm into. Yes I KNOW these two Yami Yugis look exactly the same but they're a part of two different animation style eras and I happen to like the way this one is shaded because it melts with the linework- wait where are you going. Come back I haven't even gotten into the hue differences-
