Aziraphale and the Book of Life

So I had a thought the other day.

Aziraphale was confirmed to be a Cherub at the time of Eden, and changed to Principality later on.

Crowley says the Book of Life was "just something we used to scare the cherubs". Which I took as a joke about the typical 'little winged babies' image we have of cherubs as scaring the kids, but...

Look at Aziraphale's face while he's being threatened with it directly by Michael:

That's a pretty serious Az face, poor thing.

Meanwhile Crowley... is just chilling the fuck out lol.

I have a feeling Crowley never took the Book seriously so much as the 'Heaven is using this as a threat so they're Big Mad' part, but uh. Forgot to check if Aziraphale was in the know, too.

Hey there! I just wanted to ask your opinion on two good omens theory's! One of them is the theory that Crowley was archangel Raphael before falling! And the other one was that Aziraphale was a cherub before being demoted or something like that! So sorry if it's been already asked!!

The Raphael headcanon is certainly valid! :), but it is not my headcannon, I like Crowley being like no power low level angel that just happens to be inquisitive and fall with the wrong crowd but is not a powerhouse, just this witty little shit (affecionately) making the best out of the bad and not caring politcs and making friends with an angel in Eden :).

Well, in 2011 Neil was asked that it was Cherubim that guarded the Eastern gate and said: I think you can comfortably assume that he’d been promoted several levels in the meantime., in 2019 he was asked about Aziraphale being originaly Cherubim and said that Aziraphale was a Principality: What gave you the idea he was a Cherub (Cherubim is a plural form)? He’s a Principality, according to the book. I think of Aziraphale as always being a Principality :), but again, you can headcanon anything you want ❤ :).

Eden’s Fruits…

A serpent hides in the garden among date trees, pomegranates, figs and olive trees, and is tempted by a different fruit (puns absolutely fucking intended). He’s draped over a fig branch, which theological scholars have sometimes thought was the fruit of the tree of knowledge, because Adam and Even clothed themselves in fig leaves after. Apples are never mentioned in the texts, they’re a medieval additional to the lore. An olive tree stands a the hastily made Eastern Gate, a reference to the olive trees we see throughout the Judeo-Christian texts. All the plants in this are native to the Fertile Crescent area where the story of Eden is based.

I tried a new art style and some how in turned into a very different experiment, but I’m very happy with it!

This was a HUGE project that I’m really proud of. We’re reaching the end of my old art posting and I was so excited to get to this one. These are all the variations of angels seen in AHOS, based heavily off existing Christian lore. I’ll retype the descriptions below each picture.

Also, these all relate to the angels we know in present-day. In AHOS, not all of these Choirs existed before the Fall of Lucifer.

The 9th, 8th, and 7th Choirs make up the Third Triad. The 6th, 5th, and 4th Choirs make up the Second Triad. The 3rd, 2nd, and 1st Choirs make up the First Triad.

ANGEL

Common angels who make up the 9th Choir. They deal with human affairs more often than any other angel. Guardian Angels original in the this Choir. They are closest to humans, and so look the most like them. Their name “angel” is also used as a blanket term for all nine Choirs. They can shift their forms to look like humans in order to carry out tasks on the materia world without causing a panic.

ARCHANGEL

Highly Rare angels who make up the 8th Choir. They act as famous messengers and mentors to humans. They’re usually depicted with tools/weapons specific to each archangel. There are only four archangels today: Saint Michael (shown), Saint Raphael, Saint Gabriel, and Saint Uriel. All but Uriel are deprived with white wings. They consider each other blood brothers, similarly to how humans view their own siblings. They can shift their forms to look like humans in order to carry out tasks on the materia world without causing a panic.

PRINCIPALITY

Uncommon angels who make up the 7th Choir. They lead the entirety of the Third Triad. They’re the governors of heavenly states and are sometimes seen passing guidance to the material world, but not as often as angels or archangels. They’re usually depicted with crowns and scepters to represent their leadership positions. They can shift their forms to look like humans in order to carry out tasks on the materia world without causing a panic.

POWER

God Power - Common angels who make up the 6th Choir. They’re warrior angels with a focus on strength and teamwork. They keep balance by deterring demons from both the material world and Heaven. They’re much larger than most other angels. They can fly by shifting their legs into streams of light that propel them.

Daystar Power - First created in mass by Lucifer during the Rebellion in Heaven. They focus on speed and agility. Due to the speed at which they needed to be created for the war, they were designed to be much smaller and mute, focusing on individual prowess rather than teamwork. All Daystar Powers Fell with Lucifer, and many have been killed since then, leaving only a few remaining and classifying them as Highly Rare. They can fly by shifting their legs into streams of light that propel them.

VIRTUE

Uncommon angels who make up the 5th Choir. They maintain physical balance in the universe by governing elements, weather, the movement of planets and stars, and the basic cycle of life. Much of their body is made up of materials/elements found on Earth, like fire, water, clouds, and glass. They work quietly and don’t speak much.

DOMINION

Uncommon angels who make up the 4th Choir. They lead the 2nd Triad, invoking wisdom from higher Choirs to pass on further below. They maintain incorporeal balance in the universe, like governing time and space. They often take somewhat frightening forms, with exposed bones, claws, and hollowed chests. Sand can also be seen falling through their bodies. Much of their representation symbolizes the passage of time. Dominions can also assist in recalling memories.

THRONE/OPHAN

Plural, “ophanim,” these are rare angels of the 3rd Choir. They’re the Judges of Heaven, holding grand knowledge of all ages. They often give both material and incorporeal gifts to saints and angels in Heaven and on Earth. They can shift into numerous forms, though are usually depicted with metal rings, human eyes, and wings in various patterns. Their souls are liked with the rest of the Triad.

Depicted (left) is Metatron and other Thrones. They’re they Protectors of the Door of the Father, which is a gateway into a holy room where God’s presence resides. They act as a locked barrier, allowing and refusing the passage of souls to God. Their tears are consumable, allowing the unenlightened (demons and souls in Purgatory) to see God in His fullness without complications.

CHERUB

Plural, “cherubim,” these are rare angels of the 2nd Choir. The standard Cherub depicted in scripture and seen in present-day were created after the Fall of Lucifer. They’re chariot bearers and the Watchers of Heaven who grant courage to saints and angels alike. They protect specific places in Heaven, such as Eden and Heaven’s Castle. They’re usually depicted with four wings (two to fly and two to cover their feet), multiple heads (both with animal and human characteristics), and are quadrupedal. Despite their looks, they are fully sentient and capable of speech. Their souls are linked with the rest of the Triad.

Depicted (left) is Lucifer, the first Cherub and the only one of his kind before his Fall. He was the highest ranking angel of his time, as Seraphim hadn’t been created yet. He was a highly regarded leader of all of Heaven, Prince of the Archangels, and Master of Music. He was depicted with four white wings to show his authority.

SERAPH

Plural, “seraphim,” these are highly rare angels of the 1st Choir. They were created after the Fall of Lucifer and were dubbed “The Burning Ones” to symbolize their closeness to God as His closest protectors and worshipers. They re Arely leave God’s holy room, but can and do on special occasions. They’re usually depicted with six wings (two to fly, two do cover their faces, and two to cover their feet). They were given six wings to represent their authority over Cherubim in an effort to humble the Fallen Lucifer. They are usually in constant praise and song. Their souls are linked with the rest of the Triad.

Depicted (right) is Seraphiel, the Prince of the High Angelic Choir. He is the leader of the Seraphim and he teaches them new songs and means of worship. He often communes with Saint Michael on a range of matters.
