It really takes someone very strong to allow me to feel safe to be soft. I’m in the habit of being strong now, of being tough, and sometimes these patterns don’t do us any favours. Others’ energy adjusts to what we offer outwards, and so we experience the same over and over. I’m not one to fall apart just to make a point, (after all I still need my sh*t together on a daily basis for myself) but I am beginning to experience moments where, at the point of failure, someone recognised in time that I am just human and reaches out to catch me before I fall. I will allow it. I will not assume that the only way is constant struggle. I will allow the stress of what still needs to be done to occasionally melt into an embrace. Maybe others are melting because I am so hard. Maybe others are emotional because I am suppressing something. Maybe others rest because they know I will always keep watch. I’m honestly not sure where the balance lies between hyper vigilance and torpor. But that I hope to learn slowly in 2023. This thread of images is an acknowledgment of the two men with whom, on occasion, I can allow myself to feel safe to be soft. today, Topher finally decided to attempt this LEGO build. I’ve been waiting for this day for the longest time. I knew he could do it, but he didn’t think he could. he had been waiting for his big brother to do it for him, because his big brother was “better at it” and “he didn’t know how”. Or he “wasn’t fast enough”. it’s not easy having an older brother who was good at many things. I wasn’t going to be around to help because I needed to rest and his brother was busy with other things. and so it seemed like the best time to try - there would be no one to tell him what to do. he decided to go for it. ✌️ and… he had a great time by himself. he built one section, got stuck here and there, started playing with it before it was finished (this has always been his style) and then built the different parts as he liked. not pushing him to try before he was ready, giving him space and staying out of his way was key here. ☝️ he was really happy, and very importantly - having the satisfaction of play and knowing that he actually could do it by himself. and he got the decide the end result too. it wasn’t just about building the mech, but the whole process of putting it together. this is a quiet child learning to build his confidence in himself in new skills. he never follows instructions, and he tried it today. I’m so proud of this kid. I didn’t have to do anything active, but wait and support his choices. And pull apart a few mistakes he put together because I have stronger fingers. 😂 it’s also about the language we chose to use, and how we learn. applying the skill comes at their own time and pace.
