The Petty Tally

This is a very special box that every human captain should have with him. At least that was the opinion of Captain John Smith, who wrote about it in his book The Sea Man's Grammar, 1627, and recommended it to all mariners. This box was a mixture of medicine and provisions to be used on special occasions to ensure a good and healthy crew.

He recommended the following to be carried:

"Fine wheat flower close well-packed, Rice, Currants, Sugar, Prunes, Cynamon, Ginger, Pepper, Cloves, Green Ginger, Oil, Butter, Holland Cheese or old Cheese, Wine- vinegar, Canarie-Sack, Aqua- vitae, the best Wines, the best Waters, the juyce of Limons for the scurvy, white Bisket, Oatmeal, Gammons of Bacons, dried Neats tongues, Beef packed up in Vinegear, Legs of Mutton minced and stewed, and close packed up, with tried Sewet or Butter in Earth Pots. To entertain Strangers Marmalade, Suckets, Almonds Comfits and such like”.

Captain Smith goes on to justify providing such niceties to the crew, providing himself an exceptionally humane leader in an era when most were not known for such qualities.

" Some will say I would have men rather to feast than to fight. But I say the want of these necessaries occasions the loss of more men than any English Fleet hath been slain since 88. For when a man is ill, or at the point of death, I would know whether a dish of buttered Rice with a little Cynamon, Ginger and Sugar, a little minced meat, or rost Beef, a few stew’d Prunes, a race of green Ginger, a Flap- Jack, a Kan of fresh water brewed with a little Cynamon and Sugar be not better than a little poor John, or salt fish, with Oil and Mustard, or Bisket, Butter, Cheese, or Oatmeal potage on Fish dayes, or on Flesh days, Salt, Beef Pork and Pease, with six shillings beer, this is your ordinary ship’s allowance, and good for them are well of well conditioned which is not alwayes as Seamen can witnesse. And after a storme, when poor men are all wet, and some have not so much as a cloth to shift them, shaking with cold, few of those but will tell you a little sack of Aqua- vitae is much better to keep them in health, than a little small Beer, or cold water although it be sweet. Now that every one should provide for himself, few of them have either that providence or means, and there is neither Ale-house, Tavern nor Inne to burn a faggot in, neither Grocer, Poulterer, Apothcary nor Butcher’s Shop, and therefore the use of this petty Tally is necessary, and thus to be employed as there is occasion.”

As well-intentioned as Smith's advice was, not everyone followed it or even tried to establish something like it on board.

There is grain for sale in Egypt.

Genesis 42:2

Famine pinched all the nations, and it seemed inevitable that Jacob and his family should suffer great want; but the God of providence, who never forgets the objects of electing love, had stored a granary for His people by giving the Egyptians warning of the scarcity and leading them to treasure up the grain from the years of plenty. Little did Jacob expect deliverance from Egypt, but there was grain in store for him.

Believer, though all things are apparently against you, rest assured that God has made a reservation on your behalf; in the roll of your griefs there is a saving clause. Somehow He will deliver you, and somewhere He will provide for you. Your rescue may come from a very unexpected source, but help will definitely come in your extremity, and you will magnify the name of the Lord. If men do not feed you, ravens will; and if the earth does not yield wheat, heaven will drop manna.

Therefore be of good courage, and rest quietly in the Lord. God can make the sun rise in the west if He pleases and can make the source of distress a channel of delight. The grain in Egypt was all in the hands of the beloved Joseph; he opened or closed the granaries at will. And so the riches of providence are all in the absolute power of our Lord Jesus, who will dispense them generously to His people. Joseph was abundantly ready to help his own family; and Jesus is unceasing in His faithful care for His brethren.

Our responsibility is to go after the help that is provided for us: We must not sit still in despondency, but stir ourselves. Prayer will bring us quickly into the presence of our royal Brother. Once before His throne we have only to ask and receive. His stores are not exhausted; there is still grain: His heart is not hard; He will give the grain to us. Lord, forgive our unbelief, and this evening constrain us to draw largely from Your fullness and receive grace for grace.
