Studying psychology is the awe of realizing how intricate, delicate and beautiful the human mind truly is.
Studying psychology is the horror of realizing how absurdly stunted research is thanks to outdated practices and fraudulent studies.

Oh my god my fellow psych majors need to pull their heads out of their asses
Being a psych major is not the same as being a professional in the psych field. You are still studying to be one, you do not have your degree yet.
Being a psych major does not mean you know as much as, let alone better than, the actual professionals.
Being a psych major does not mean you are a specialist who is an authority on any specific disorder. Hell, having a degree does not even mean that. Unless you are an actual specialist, you do not know better than the people who specialize in that disorder.
Being a psych major does not make you an authority on what people have going on in their brains. You are not a professional yet.
Being a psych major does not mean you are automatically right on anything psychology related. There is a reason you do not have a degree yet.
Psych majors cannot determine who has what disorders. You are not licensed to make a diagnosis, because you are still a student, not a professional.
You cannot know what is going on in a strangers brain just because you major in psych. Even licensed professionals cannot do that. No matter how long they studied, or have been working in psych. There is a reason the diagnostic process for most disorders takes so long. So you, as someone who does not even have a degree yet, definitely cannot make that call where professionals cannot.
And, most importantly, being a psych major does NOT give you a free pass to be an asshole to mentally ill people. In fact, the opposite, really. People like them are the exact type of person you will be treating once you get your degree. Mentally ill people like that entrust psych professionals with their wellbeing. If you cannot be decent to mentally ill people that you do not even know, you should not be treating their mental health.

Why is it always psych majors who feel the need to do the neurotypical equivalent of mansplaining about autism to me?
@neurotypical psych majors: you know nothing. Literally, you don’t even know what you don’t know. I do not need you explaining autism to me, I do not need you explaining implicit social rules or facial/tone signals to me, I do not need you to explain to me why the joke I just made didn’t come across as funny. Maybe YOU should work on understanding autistic communication, social rules, and humor? We do in fact have those things btw. Look up the double empathy problem. Y’all neurotypicals are just as shitty at understanding us as we are at understanding you. Probably more so because most autistic people I know actively study NT behavior from the age of like. Eight fucking years old. How long have you studied autism for? Like a 3 week unit on developmental disabilities in your Intro to Human Development class?
To help you understand, I have made a helpful diagram based on the Dunning-Kruger Effect graph:
Tumblr media
Seriously, if I have ONE MORE neurotypical psych major start NTsplaining autism to me, I will personally show up at your college and deliver an eight hour lecture on how little you know about autism and why you should shut up about it and listen to the people who actually know what we’re talking about

🌻?
I have been using this ask game as an excuse to info dump about stuff I’ve been thinking about and I’m not going to stop that now lol
So let’s talk about humanistic therapy as portrayed in Batman the Audio Adventures!
Humanistic therapy approaches is something I’ve been learning about in my psychopathology class
It came about in the 1970’s and basically says that every client you work with you treat with respect and that they have the potential to make change
The big concept we focused on was “unconditional positive regard” which just means that whoever that person is, whatever they have done, you treat them with respect as a human being and that they have the potential for change, the big key word here is “unconditional”
This made me think about Batman the Audio Adventures, specifically how Riddler is treated in Arkham Asylum by the different people there
Riddler actually isn’t even there for this part of the podcast, the part I’m thinking of is when Dr Arkham calls Dr Snetecker into his office to fire him after Riddler was able to escape I think this scene shows the two main takeaways we got from humanistic therapy very well
The first one is the unconditional positive regard, which there is just such a simple way that they show the difference between Dr Arkham and Dr Snetecker here, which is the name by which they address him
Arkham calls him Nygma or Riddler or stuff like that, and has a tone in his voice whenever he is referring to him that makes it sound like an insult, even if he is just using the name Nygma
Snetecker on the other hand refers to him as Mr. Nygma, and says it just like you would say the name of anyone else and in doing so he is giving the Riddler this unconditional positive regard by simply referring to him like that
The other thing also talks about unconditional positive regard but more heavily focuses on that part about the potential for change which is the chess computer that Dr Snetecker gave to the Riddler
Everyone else talks about Riddler just in terms of keeping him contained, not any real sense of working towards any sort of rehabilitation or treatment, except for Dr Snetecker
He talks about the progress he has been making with the Riddler, and the therapeutic tools and methods he was using to aid this progress, between this and the way he talks we can tell that he thinks progress is possible
So yeah, that’s just what I’ve been thinking about since we went over it in class

yesterday, we were arguing about psychology
someone said that if you study it, then you're going to get a new perspective and understand why the field is like that and why you shouldn't be so doubtful of it, that it's not psychology's fault that some bad apples exist and ruin it for their pacients
i study it. it's the 4th year. im getting a master's degree in clinical psychology, just like them. but the more i study, the more in contact i am with it, the more i realize how unfair this whole system is, how, no matter how good your intention, the fact that it's based in outdated ideas is going to end up hurting people, one way or another. everytime i go to class, someone, the majority of people, is ready to point a finger at a child and blame them for making their parents' lives hell, especially if there's the slightest hint of autism. do they even think about how they might harm them?
i swear, everyday i get sicker and sicker and want to run away from there. i'm not against therapy, it can be helpful and save lives, but the way it happens? how expensive it is? how little focus there is in social issues and how sometimes we can't do anything because the root of someone's problems is in society? and let's not talk about the amount of ignorance some people have. i have seen people being racist, transphobic, support abusive relationships, and none of that is seen as bad or odd. i've been dead named by future therapists, whilst the teachers insisted that we need to support everyone regardless of their views. acceptance above all, they preach, but where is it? at the end of it all, we need to fit into tiny boxes of what society finds "normal", or else we aren't "cured".
i don't hate psychology and, as much as i bitch about it, i don't hate psychiatry. but there's a serious need for change and we need to start at the roots of our beliefs and why we insist on using flaky or outdated practices .

Things I did last semester that boosted my average:
I don’t really like to toot my own horn but I see these posts a lot and I thought I’d share what really worked for me personally :)
•took both handwritten and typed notes (minimized hand fatigue so my notes were actually good lol) (also it’s far easier to take extensive notes and delete them later than to take minimal notes and be stuck trying to remember what was said)
•before an exam: created flashcards, diagrams, and rewrote or fleshed out notes on a word doc in a simulated exam atmosphere to enhance later recall
•planned a month at a time so I knew in advance when I could socialize and when I had to Grind™️ to prevent burnout
•made friends in my classes!! genuinely makes a big difference
•annotated the hell out of everything (pencil or post in textbooks to resell, pen and highlighters in books I knew I’d keep, all online readings were converted to PDFS and I scribbled all over them)
•annotated with jokes this is maybe unorthodox but I swear it worked for me- I’d laugh at the wording, draw emojis, reference memes, and crack jokes in the margins of my books and it made it so much easier to remember key points of the readings later on
•cut off toxic friends. self explanatory lol but stress impacts your grades!
