i just found this while browsing on the hot topic website--

for context: the autism awarness puzzle piece is a symbol originally created by the organisation Autism Speaks, which treats autistic ppl like shit. their goal is to, quote, ''ultimately eradicate autism for the sake of future generations.'' they also compared autism with deadly diseases. its also getting criticized for the fact that they put the focus of the work not on autistic ppl, but on parents and their hurdles. they treat autism purely deficiently.

also the puzzle piece clearly implies that autistic ppl have ''a missing piece''

both is just.. yikes..

Is not problem like puzzle piece.

Is not problem like infinity symbol.

Why is the first line seen as a problem to say but the second one isn’t? Why have face hate and harassment because like puzzle piece? Why is problem like multiple symbols, why problem want use both?

Understand the meaning of puzzle piece. Understand Is associated with Autism Speaks, doesn’t mean can’t use. Don’t like autism speaks, don’t think autism needs full cure but don’t think is reason completely remove symbol.

For me, autism is like a missing piece. It does feel like I’m a not a complete person, and something is missing. But I also feel like autism is part of a puzzle and It have a place somewhere. Without it, the picture wouldn’t be fully complete.

The meaning can change to fix someone.

Don’t remove label because isn’t what you want, because some do need and want.

Haha, guess who TOTALLY forgot to post this immediately after the other one?

Anyway, this here is one of my favorite things I've ever drawn! Since there were still a couple days hours of July left, I figured I would go through my mutuals' lists of OCs and try and wrangle as many disabled characters as I could for one big Disability Awareness Month piece! This was the last thing I made for Art Fight, and what a doozy it was to put together! I found a brush I liked to make the shadows of the tree's leaves, though I could have used it a little more effectively. I ran out of time in the end, so there's a lot of detail I never got to add on, like proper shadows and Cutie Marks.

My neurodivergent friends, what do you think about this?

I really don’t like the puzzle piece. It makes autistic people look like they are “puzzling” or that something is “missing” from us. It’s also the logo of the hate group Autism Speaks.

I understand that it has different meanings. But…I just don’t like it. At all.

That’s just my opinion, but I want to hear from you guys. What do you think of the puzzle piece? Do you think it represents autism as it should? Let me know.

I don't exactly know what you're talking about, but it's ok.

[She smiled, glancing behind them to make sure no one was in sight, before shuffling around with her pockets for a moment. Pulling out multiple, rather large, pieces of meat wrapped in paper towels. Offering them to the segment with a hushed voice.]

Here..! Since we got to the room first, I was able to collect a bit more than half of the meat on my plate. I would've taken the whole thing, but that would've been suspicious.. the carrots mashed up when I tried with them, so this is all I managed to sneak away.. hope that's alright!

autism speaks created the blue puzzle piece, not the original.

this is kinda how we use the puzzle peice. a core peice, a big peice of our idenity. we are apart of a wide community of autistics everywhere. we can change the meaning with acknowledging it's horrible past. we know as a disbled BIPOC system.
