Kai, Nya and their Parents - The Difference between knowing and not knowing what you're missing - and the sacrifices made by a caring brother
Tumblr media
The day Nya was brought home - the day Kai met Nya face to face for the first time; Kai is two (Hands of Time, episode 3, A Time of Traitors)
Tumblr media
Three years later
Ray and Maya are kidnapped, thus forcing Kai to take on the responsibility of becoming a five year old Dad aka the death of Kai's babyhood and childhood so as to preserve Nya's babyhood and childhood (Hands of Time, episode 8, Pause and Effect)
Tumblr media
Thirteen years later
Kai and Nya are reunited with their parents (Hands of Time, Episode 8, Pause and Effect)
Three years later (vid from Seabound, episode 2, The Call of the Deep)
Though Kai had pointed out that Nya and Maya did not get along (due to Nya's independence from having grown up without her parents); at Master Wu's insistence, Kai calls in his mother to help Nya with her power problem.
Nya, however, dislikes Maya's mothering (what she considers babying).
When Wu suggests that Nya should discuss her issues with Kai, Nya insists with scorn that Kai likely enjoys being waited on and loves to be treated like a baby.
(Note how Nya goes from the probability statement of "probably, likes, being waited on" to the presumption in her absolute statement of "I bet he loves being treated like a baby" -- Nya, please tell me if this is your thoughts on your brother who raised you and gave up everything for you then when has he ever previously behaved in such a way that would suggest your statements to be true.)
The difference here is that Kai remembers what it was like to have someone taking care of him only to have it ripped away - to go from being the baby boy to suddenly having to be the adult for his sister.
Nya, though, doesn't really remember what it was like to be cared for by her parents; but, she remembers what it was like to be cared for (by her brother).
Kai is, in a way, reveling in the joy of being able to play games with his father, eat food cooked by his mother, and learn once more from his parents.
Tumblr media
All things he hoped for but never once thought he'd ever have again.
While growing up, Nya was likely allowed to play games, eat homemade food that she didn't have to cook, and learn from Kai the lessons that he remembers their parents teaching them.
Kai on the other hand, had to get straight to work, schedule time in a busy day to cook so that Nya could eat, and be the one to teach trusted lessons from his parents (while likely having to weed out good advice from bad, given to him by whichever random adult decided to give it to him).
Kai's sacrifices for Nya can even be seen in the clothes they wear in the pilot.
Tumblr media
When we first see Nya it looks like she's dressed in silk clothes which we know didn't come from Maya's closet since she generally dresses in blue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kai on the other hand is introduced in his blacksmithing clothes and goes to train with Wu, in his blacksmithing clothes, which may indicate a limited closet - he may even be wearing his Father's clothes as a way to save money.
Tumblr media
But, you might say, he has different clothes in the episode, The Royal Blacksmiths.
Tumblr media
Yes, he does have different clothes, but these clothes, like his and the Ninja's matching pajamas (color coded but with the same golden dragon on the chest pocket) are likely the result of Kai now being able to lean on Wu, financially.
Note that Kai's clothes are the only ones that indicate his elemental power - the others likely already had these clothes on hand before they met Wu (except maybe Zane - IDK).
Another way Kai's sacrifices and generosity torwards his sister can be shown is by comparing the first pilot episode to the Season 2 episode 6, Wrong Place, Wrong Time.
In this episode it is shown that, were it not for Nya getting kidnapped by Garmadon, Kai would never had cared about becoming a ninja.
It was only the knowledge that becoming a ninja was the only way to save Nya that motivated Kai to become a ninja.
Yet in a timeline where Nya was never kidnapped, all Kai cared about was getting the blacksmith shop back on its feet after the Skulkin attack.
So how did Wu convince Kai to come to the Monastery, the answer, he didn't - Nya did.
Wu unintentionally convinced Nya to become a ninja and since Kai wasn't just going to let her go off on her own (this is his fourteen year old little sister who he raised after all) Kai went with her so they could become Ninja.
Kai gave up what he wanted in favor of what Nya wanted.
~~~~~
Kai's sacrifices, his giving nature, and everything he does for Nya is almost practically an automatic habit, because he and Nya lost their parents at a young age thus forcing Kai to give up being a child to be Nya's caretaker.
And yet throughout the series whenever the siblings bring up their parents, it becomes clear that Kai made sure that Nya never forgot them and that they were remembered well, that they were missed and not forgotten.
I really like Nya; and while Seabound is a great season it also points out that Nya may just be truly unaware of how much Kai sacrificed for her to the point where she doesn't understand exactly why Kai likes having their parents around; among other details that she and others misunderstand about Kai.
Believe me, I like the idea that Nya knows and helps her brother out where she can, and she definitely loves him, but it seems like Seabound has shown her to be unaware of Kai's trials and tribulations in raising her and keeping them both from landing in the grave of the fireflies.
AAAA kinda old art (that's a lie i made it like three weeks ago) but I wanted to talk more about the supporting characters of the High Tide AU! Those being. Misako, Maya, and Ray (I had no idea what to do with Wu so i've. set him aside for now)
This isn't going to be anything super in-depth. Just a little . idk. recap?
Misako and Maya become very close (that's. platonic) in the weeks following Nya's sacrifice. They already knew each other to an extent, but after she and Ray went missing, Maya never had the chance to get to know Misako as a true friend. But now she does! And they're like besties! The two bond over their shared experiences of motherhood and Misako uses knowledge gained from years of love and loss to help Maya through the grieving process.
Maya and Ray stay at the monastery for a few months after Nya's sacrifice to support Kai. Ray didn't know Nya the way Kai did, so they often reminisce on what she was like when they're together as a way to reconnect. Kai really struggles with feeling overly-responsible for the other ninja as they navigate their way through grief together; he feels as if it's down to him to do everything in his power to prevent his friends from suffering the same fate as his sister, but is quick to lose himself in the process. Being able to retell these memories with his father allows Kai to process his grief, and strengthen his relationship with the rest of his family too.
I'm doing my best to be as angst-free as possible with this AU and I hope it's paying off <\3 I don't want this to be the most devastating story ever, I just want to rewrite the scenario of Nya's sacrifice in a way that brings the ninja together instead of tearing them apart.
Did some family head shots, starting with the Smiths. I like to believe that Kai and Nya primarily look like Maya, whatever Ray's got going on is kinda hidden. (Please don't repost my work, reshares are chill tho)
Summary: Garmadon and Co. move into the monastery.
Warnings: Wu is in denial
Prompt: New Beginnings
Extra: Set in pre-canon. "And Co." are Ray, Maya, Libber, and Lily. Wu is in denial of being a father, but Ray and Garmadon will not shut up about it. I am sleepy so this probably sounds a bit dead.
"So this is what you've been doing in my absence?" Garmadon asked after he knocked on a giant red door of the Monastery.
He had walked in on Wu as he guided Morro through proper katana form.
The brother's locked eyes.
"Morro, you've done a great job today, but I think we're done for now. Do you mind cleaning up everything?" the blonde asked kindly.
Morro simply bowed and dragged the training dummy and bokken to their respective storage places, disappearing into the monastery afterwards.
Garmadon approached his younger brother. The two stood face to face, tension thickening the air as silence flowed between the two.
"Is this the boy you've been writing about?" the elder brother asked.
"Yes, that was Morro." The younger brother confirmed. "Where are the other four?"
"They are… coming." The brunette turned to the stairs, where spiky brown hair popped up from a distance. "It has been a long journey."
"I see. Good thing Morro and I prepared rooms for you all ahead of time." Wu stepped forwards to be next to the taller man.
The two stood in weighted silence.
The eldest sighed, "I missed you, Brother."
"As did I." The younger quickly brushed off any dirt accumulated from training.
Ray clambered up the stairs, huffing with each step he took. Maya, Libber, and Lily followed up behind. All of them at different levels of exhaustion, ranging from Libber, who was bent over with her hands on her knees gasping for air as fat beads of sweat dripped down her round pale cheeks and thin neck, to Lily, who was slightly winded as she dabbed sweat off her brow and jogged up and down the same three steps, giving encouraging words to the other women with her.
"Why," Ray asked through labored breaths, "do you live on top of a mountain?"
The blonde man smiled, "There's a nice view."
"Eughhh… I need… a bath," Libber groaned as she collapsed against the wall of the monastery, scooching over to a shaded area.
"Same, I forgot how tall this mountain was," Maya agreed.
"Oh come on, it wasn't that bad," Lily received two deadpan stares.
"Maybe for you because you love rock climbing," Libber grumbled before slouching inside to bathe. Maya and Lily followed suit.
Ray straightened up eventually. "So, where's your kid, Wu?"
"What?"
"Your kid. Y'know, agh what was the name, Mollo? No, Mono? Ah, Morro!"
"Wha- hah! Morro is not my kid."
"You sure, Brother?" Garmadon piped up. "You seem quite fond of him."
"I can be fond of a child without adopting him! Besides, he's only my student."
"Sure, because you definitely wrote about discovering his favorite food like he's your student," Ray rolled his amber eyes. "Just accept it, you're a father now."
"Which means I'm an uncle as well," Garmadon quietly realized.
"Again, Morro is just my student. Besides, there's no way he sees me as a fa-"
"Sensei."
The three men turned to see their topic of discussion waiting patiently by a door into the building.
"Excuse me for interrupting, but I completed my task," the boy said after he came over.
"Good job! Let's go inside now, okay?" the younger Dragoni crouched to be closer to Morro's eye level.
The boy with a green streak nodded happily and softly made his way back into the temple.
Ray and Garmadon shared a look as Wu rose to his full height and followed, waving the two over.
"Not a father, he says," Ray mumbled before heading inside with Garmadon.
It’s thanksgiving!!! what are the GIAGAU families doing for it?
All the Garmadon family are squeezed in one table. Lord Garmadon got the biggest turkey he could get for dinner, and it was too big to fit in the oven so he roasted it over a lava pit. Sensei Garmadon laments they don't have nearly enough gravy to go with it, which Lord G only laughs at. Morro makes cannibalism jokes if the Lloyds eat the green bean casserole. The Wus argue over which tea would go best with the meal, and Koko and Misako are having the time of their lives.
Show Kai and Nya were invited over to their movie counterparts for the holiday. Spike Kai brought a pumpkin pie, that he made and ended up a little crispy. Buddy Kai is helping his father cook the rest of the meal, and everyone else has been kicked out of the kitchen. Maya and the Nyas are getting way too invested in beating each other at card games.
The Walkers and Gordons have all converged at Scrap N Junk and the whole place is decorated festively. The Jays are each chatting up a storm with each other's families getting them caught up on everything currently going on. The Eds and Ednas are being their wonderful doting selves. Flick Cliff Gordon is constantly shooting glances at Movie Libber, and Telly Cliff Gordon sees it and wonders where Show Libber is, but doesn't want to ruin the atmosphere by asking just yet.
The Coles' families have also converged, and, after a very emotional meeting with Show Lou meeting Gabby (my version of Lily, named before we knew her canon name), he and Movie Lou team up to serenade her, dragging Cliff Cole in to help them, and allowing DJ Cole to finish the cooking unimpeded.
The Julien family is also all together and invited the Borgs to come too. The Zanes and Rusty Echo worked together to make a mouth-watering feast. Skylor brings some food from her restaurant, which is a bit out of place but tastes too good to pass up. Both Pixals tried to make something to bring, but it came out inedible, so they just made sure to set the table and help carry the dishes where they needed to go, and keeping Tiny Echo from making a mess with his enthusiasm. The Cyruses and Prof. Julien started talking about robotics and can't stop. M.O.M. is recording everything for prosperity. They all have a moment of remembrance for Dr. Julien, before digging in to eat.
People, I wanna know your theories in where the ninjas parents ended up
Because to me they all somehow ended up finding each other and became neighbors who are constantly worrying about their missing kids
And yes, this include Garmadon
He has board game nights with Ed and Edna
I just want to say this.
Jay and Cole often join Kai and Nya on their visits to their parents because Maya was extremely close with their mothers (in this case Jay’s biological mother, but I feel like she’d also be somewhat close with Edna!) so they go to ask her a bunch of questions about her and Maya gives them fun little stories to return home with and it’s really fun for them! Ray teases Kai and Nya the whole time by saying stuff like “Omg look at your significant others I could literally ruin your lives right now” and Nya has to hold Kai down so he doesn’t burn their dad to a crisp and Ray thinks it’s hilarious.
One can probably assume that Wu has slipped up and called one of the Ninja by another's name (very common occurrence in real life, I'd be more surprised if he hasn't), but have we considered whether he's ever called them by their parents' names? Have we? How about you go imagine early-season Wu calling Kai "Ray". Right now. Go 👉
