Oh I can already tell I'm going to be so normal about Ben Galpin's Jonathan Harker. The way he intones Jonathan trying to rationalize everything and not give in to fear is just heartbreaking.

It's day one, this man has only now REACHED the castle, and he's already questioning his own perception of reality. Were the coachman's eyes red? No, that's ridiculous, must have been a trick of the light. We seem to be driving in circles... no, but that can't be, why would we be? Oh, oh we are. Well there must be a reason. The coachman and Count Dracula are eerily similar... but don't be stupid, that makes no sense. And he's right! It doesn't! The sheer amount of times he goes “oh, silly me, it must be my own fault that I'm seeing and thinking all these things” and you can tell he's trying so hard to make himself believe it just breaks me.

I'm very happy we seem to be embracing more the “Jonathan Harker is not really naive he's just very anxious and needs this job” approach but also? Jonathan Harker refuses to acknowledge the warning signs because the only two possible explanations are “it's my own fault I'm seeing things” or “I am alone in an isolated area of a foreign country with a man who is not only stronger than me but supernaturally so, is not human and means me harm, and to try to escape him would mean certain death” and the second one is not only far less likely but uh. Leaves him with no choice but to break down in fear. His “naiveté” is not him ignoring his survival instinct, it IS his survival instinct.

(And Dracula KNOWS this, and he KNOWS his facade is easy to see through. But what is Jonathan going to do? So so early in the novel, and Dracula is already playing with his food)

Immense shout out to Ben Galpin and the sound design @re-dracula applied to his dialogue for this entry. Never before would I have thought the words:

"We four?"

Could sound so much like a gun being cocked. The same way I never thought the words:

"I want to consult with Mina."

Could sound like someone mentally whetting a knife.

Really, all of Galpin's deliveries--when not addressed in absolute sweetheart mode to Mina--had just the right amount of steadily sharpening ice and steel just under the surface, absolutely helped by the subtle soundscape underneath. The same way Quincey keeps his own little motif, Jonathan is now getting little surges of something cold and taut. Still polite! Still thanking God (note the tension as he says it) for Mina's peaceful sleep!

But you can hear and almost feel that he is one (1) frayed nerve away from getting very, very uncivil with Van Helsing and company if he catches one more whiff of the same bullshit that got Mina put in danger in the first place. Bravo, 5/5 kukri blades.

I've seen a lot of people talk about the voice acting on the "For your mother's sake" and "Let this be my goodbye" lines on today's ep of re: Dracula (which are both amazing, obviously), but the choice made on that last "Here comes the coach" line???? Man, that shit hit hard.

The pause between it and the previous line as we sit with Our Good Friend Jonathan's uneasy realization that he could die doing this, the reluctant self-imposed cheer that he inserts into his voice in such a way that you might be fooled did you not have some idea what was coming, the small exasperation at the coach's unpunctuality and involuntary note of fondness as he's reminded of Mina who he loves so much as to regale her with every detail of this long, strange journey.

Maybe y'all will think I'm reading too much into it, but I say you're not reading into it enough, and the pure skill of Ben Galpin to convey it all in four simple words with zero visual cues is insane, and I will be thinking about it for the next month, thanks.
