Jaune: *Wandering the Beacon hallways, guitar in hand, having just been rejected by Weiss, again.* I spent like five hours on that song… *Notices Cardin and Russel peering out into the courtyard* … huh?

Cardin: I mean she’s… she’s something else.

Russel: Man, she’s not even on the SCALE!

Cardin: Maybe on the Scoville Scale.

Russel: Ha! Nice.

Jaune: Uh… hey guys!

Russel/Cardin: *Jump up and yelp* AH!

Cardin: Oh, its just you. Sup?

Russel: *Immediately get’s up in Jaune’s face* Yeah, man! You got a problem-?

Cardin: *Shoves Russel’s shoulder* Hey. I told you we’re not doing that anymore. Jaune’s cool now.

Russel: Oh, right. My bad. *Smacks Jaune’s hand in greeting and brings him for a quick pat on the back* How’s it going, Big-J? You doing good? You in a band now or something?

Jaune: *Looks at his guitar* Oh this? It’s nothing really. What are you guys up to?

Russel: Just checking out the Haven-Hottie.

Jaune: Who?

Cardin: Oh you have to have seen her. Look! *Drags Jaune over to their spot and point* Right there.

Jaune: *Squints until he notices Cinder sitting on a bench in the courtyard, his eyes practically bulging out upon really getting a look at her* Whoa…

Cardin/Russel: RIGHT?!

Cardin: Dude, she’s like the eighth wonder of Remnant or something!

Russel: Nah, she's beyond that—she’s the ninth, tenth, and eleventh wonder combined! I heard when she walks by, even the statues stop and stare!

Cardin: *Chuckles* I heard that she was held back a few times because the headmaster didn’t want their favorite student to graduate.

Russel: *Leans towards Jaune* And Cardin thinks he has a shot with her.

Cardin: *Blushes* I could! I’ve got the charm and the muscles to back it!

Russel: So why don’t you go and do it then?

Cardin: I would, but I’m still sore from my morning workout.

Russel: It’s 4:30 P.M.

Cardin: It was a really intense workout! Besides I don’t see you going!

Russel: Are you kidding?! A woman like that is only made for heartbreak. I can’t handle that stress, man! You couldn’t pay me to talk to her!

Cardin: *Suddenly has an idea and then slyly looks to Jaune* Hey, Jaune. You feel like making a quick buck?

Jaune: What do you mean?

Cardin: Here’s the deal, Blondie. I’ll give you 50$ if you go over there, right now, and ask that hottie out to the Vytal Festival Dance. 200$ if she says yes.

Jaune: (50 bucks? I can make myself look like an idiot for 50 bucks! I practically do it for free all the time! I could use that to buy Weiss some really nice flowers, then she’d have to go!) Deal! *Claps Cardin on the shoulder, hands Russel the guitar, and walts right out into the open* Watch and learn boys!

Russel: No way…

Cardin: Oh this is gonna be amazing.

Cinder: *Seemingly lost in deep thought*

Jaune: *Saunters right up to Cinder* Well hello~ beau-

Cinder: *Snaps a horrid glare at him*

Jaune: AHHH! *Jumps back startled*

Cinder: *Quickly switches to her signature “Just a regular happy school girl smile” that she’s become so adept at using* Oh hi. Didn’t see you there.

Jaune: *Gulps* I… um… hi.

Cinder: *Continues forced smile*

Jaune: *Awkwardly scratches his cheek* …so- uh.

Cinder: Was there something you wanted?

Jaune: *Deciding now is not the best time to ask her to the dance*…Yeah. I wanted to know… is… uh… everything ok?

Cinder: *Tilts her head* Of course I am. Do I seem upset to you? *Gives her best smile*

Jaune: Yeah, a little….

Cinder: *Her smile fades, replaced by a faint grimace of irritation.* Am I that transparent? *Lets out an exasperated huff* I'm fine, honestly. Just some personal matters, nothing you need to worry about.

Jaune: *Expression softens empathetically* Oh… Do you want to talk about it anyways? 

Cinder: *Glances at him quizzically.* 

Jaune: You know. Just to get it off your chest? If you want?

Cinder: And share my problems with a complete stranger?

Jaune: Well, my mom always said, "Strangers are friends you just haven't met yet."

Cinder: *Stares blankly* That is... a horribly naive saying. Not only is that statistically false but it's also VERY dangerous advice to give to a child.

Jaune: *Scratches the back of his head* Yeah… I kinda used to wander off with a lot of random adults as a kid.

Cinder: *Hold’s back a sudden laugh.* Snrk!

Jaune: *Smiles* But I like to think I came out alright. 

Cinder: *Faintest hint of a smile* You at least seem harmless enough. *Looks Jaune up and down.* Have I seen you around before?

Jaune: *Suddenly more nervous* Y-Yeah, maybe! *Straightens his uniform out* I’m Jaune Arc. My friends call me… Jaune. *Cringes inside.*

Cinder: *Raises an eyebrow, the hint of a smirk forming.* Jaune, is it? Well, Jaune, I'm Cinder. Cinder Fall. Pleasure’s all yours I presume.

Jaune: *Nods and smiles* Yeah, it’s nice to meet you! See? Not strangers anymore, are we?

Cinder: *Gives a small chuckle.* I suppose not. *Glances around briefly* So, you really care to know?

Jaune: If I can be of any help, yeah.

Cinder: *Sighs* It’s about a… “colleague” of mine…

Jaune: *Sit’s down on the bench with her* Like, a teammate?

Cinder: That's it, precisely. A "teammate" who's proving rather insubordinate. Now, because of that, I find myself at a loss. She refuses to undertake a task that would suit her perfectly!

Jaune: Ohhhh I see. You’re having leadership troubles. Has your teammate told you why she won’t help?

Cinder: It’d be a miracle to get a single word out of her. *Grumbles quietly to herself* That mute insect. *Continues to talk normally* She won’t do a single thing I say unless it’s conveyed through her… “father.”

Jaune: Huh. I get you. I’m a leader too, and trust me, I’ve had my fair share of trouble reigning in a certain teammate of mine. She even has a “brother” that she tends to listen better to than me sometimes.

Cinder: *Listens intently* How do you command her obedience?

Jaune: *Looks at her confused* Her what?

Cinder: How do you get her to listen to you?

Jaune: Oh, well. Whenever talking doesn’t work, I go to Ren, her “brother”, well, not really brother, but- you know it’s this whole thing that I don’t really need to get into, but the point is I go to Ren and inform him that I’ll no longer be providing them part of the team budget for pancakes until she settles down.

Cinder: *Looks at Jaune incredulously*  Pancakes???

Jaune: *Nods* Mhmm, it’s her most favorite thing in the world. Literally seen her eat if for every breakfast I’ve had with her.

Cinder: *Digests the information* Withhold the budget so she can’t have her favorite luxuries… I can work with that. *Sighs* But the task is rather time sensitive, what if she doesn’t yield in time to get it done?

Jaune: Then it sounds like you may need to do it yourself.

Cinder: *Raises an eyebrow, almost insulted* Me?

Jaune: Well, if it’s crucial and she's not budging, sometimes it’s best to step in and handle it personally. I know it’s probably not ideal, but that comes with being a leader, they depend on you when no one else can do it.

Cinder: Hmph. They do depend on me, don’t they?

Jaune: *Nods encouragingly* Yeah! That’s why they put you in charge.

Cinder: *Gets pumped* I am in charge! They’d be completely lost without me!

Jaune: *Getting pumped too* Exactly! Sometimes we have to roll up our sleeves and lead by example. Show them how things really get done!

Cinder: *Jumps up out of her seat* You’re right! It’s time I take matters in my own hands, and show that little mute who is really the boss around here!

Jaune: *Gets up too* That's the spirit!

Cinder: *Nods determined* Thank you. I now know exactly what I must do.

Jaune: *Smiles warmly* Happy to help. Oh and hey, good luck, Cinder.

Cinder: *Smiles confidently* Luck is for the ill-prepared, Jaune. *Turns and saunters off* And I never need luck.

Jaune: *Watches her walk off, feeling proud* So. Cool. *Whistles and walks off*

Cardin/Russel: *Stop him immediately*

Russel: DUUUUUDE!

Cardin: What did she say?!

Jaune: Huh?

Russel: *Smacks Cardin’s arm* What do you think she said?! They both walked away all smiling and shit! Jaune, you are a GOD.

Jaune: What do you guys think happened?

Cardin: That’s what we want to know! What did she say when you asked her to the dance?!

Jaune: *A long moment of silence before he starts sputtering in disbelief and panic now realizing that he completely forgot to ask her out*

Bloodright + All for Classroom: It isn't often students ask to meet him in person, usually sending someone to Nedzu is considered punishment. Granted, he IS the principal. "My mentor has expressed interest in working here." "Oh my! He wouldn't be the only one, but we have a reputation to maintain so you must understand we cannot hire just about anyone who asks." "He doesn't have much time left, so he is willing to compromise much more that he would be in any other circumstances. In here is the tentative contract, his contact information and all the blackmail he has on HPSC in particular." It isn't often someone takes him off guard, and usually he revel in the uncertainty but the newly revealed villain in his school takes priority. "I'll stay in touch."

Bloodright + Secret Rat Society: This raises some interesting questions. Would she make it in? Because if so, it was fun while it lasted. If she didn't? How long before society notes there is something not quite right about her?

Bloodright + Neighborhood vampire + stray cat: Himiko eventually convinced AfO to let her bring friend for a visit! Izuku mauled all the Nomus they currently had. He thinks the boy is going to be great influence on her, meanwhile Garagi wants to commit murder. + All for Classroom: He did! Sure it is going to take a few years but he did go through with it.

If Evie was found alive by Ace Anarchy when he found Nova:

- Nova would definitely have to care for her year old sister since, we know she was left alone a lot in the beginning. Her uncle probably occasionally helped but imagine a six year old needing to take care of her sister for a large amount of time

- guess the hours she would be asleep are filled now

- once the anarchists go into hiding full time and grow closer, Nova will probably be able to catch a break from being the only one to care for Evie

- Leroy. Leroy not only has his inventor Nova, but now has a metal thief. Imagine. Imagine the reckoning of this trio.

- Nova's most likely protective of Evie, which could definitely stir up some drama

- Sisters. They are so close

- Nova still has the bond to the other's in sketch's team when it comes to being an older sibling. Ruby bff hours

- Adrian. Imagine Adrian comforting Nova who's had to be a sort of parent and trained fighter since a young age.

The plot would definitely change drastically when Evie isn't already apart of the renegades so I don't know how that'll work

The rookie on the team hates his job sometimes. Yes he’s the low guy on the totem pole, but did they really have to send him to tell the Boss the bad news every time? It was almost to the point that just him knocking on the door put the already surly boss in an even worse mood. He raised his hand to knock when he heard-

Boss: Just get in here already!

Rookie thinking: Great. He’s ready to bite my head off and I haven’t even said anything.

Walking in he’s almost choking on the smoke. Squinting he can make out at least three spent cigars in the ashtray, another bad sign. And his news isn’t going to help.

Boss: Of course they send you. What bad news do you have for me now?

Rookie: You know that team of Renegades that keep giving us the slip? We lost track of them. Again. Our contact watching the road they were reported to be on hasn’t seen anyone for the past 7-8 hours.

Boss: Damn! We miss them at every turn! How do they keep getting past us?!

Inside the van carrying the ever elusive Renegades, were Jaune riding shotgun trying to read a large paper map, Cinder in the back seat looking over his shoulder trying to help, Adam next to her fighting with his scroll, and Neo trying to drive. They are completely lost.

Cinder: I’m telling you we should’ve gone left!

Jaune: But we did go left, just like you said!

Cinder: Not left there, left back there!

Jaune: There aren’t any other places where we could’ve turned left other than where we did!

Cinder: Perhaps you’re just-

Adam: Stupid Scroll! Why won’t you work!

Cinder: You know that reception is worthless in this area so stop playing with that thing and help us figure out where we are!

Adam: You also know that my contact went missing on our last job two nights ago and I haven’t gotten it replaced so reading that map is not happening!

Jaune: Hey! This is all I could get my hands on!

Cinder: You can at least try to do something! Weren’t you leading strike operations in the White Fang?

Adam: We had better maps than this and a localized knowledge of the area before we did anything. What do you want me to do? Do I look like Magellan?

Cinder: Adam you can’t even spell Magellan.

Jaune: Wasn’t there some Louis guy that did some map work? Or am I thinking-

Cinder: Louis de what? What are you talking about?

Neo, leaning over to point out a part of the map: Hey, didn’t we pass this section here? We gotta be right here!

Jaune: Where? Which part?

All the Renegades lean in to get a closer look at the spot Neo is pointing at, the map obstructing their view of the road.

Cinder: Now I see what she’s talking about. How did we miss that?

Adam: The lines are too close together, but I think I can make out the shapes.

Jaune: Hey Neo?

Neo:🙂?

Jaune: Who’s driving?

Renegades, looking up from the map:😕😳?

The see a massive Grimm Ursa that seems just as surprised to see them as they are. And they are headed right towards him.

Renegades: 😱😱😱😱😱 AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!

Jerking the steering wheel, the crew find themselves in an impromptu roller coaster ride across the countryside unable to stop as Neo’s umbrella got stuck in the gas pedal. Eventually Jaune was able to free the obstruction just as they drove back onto the road with their destination in sight. Without a word, Neo pulls into the first gas station they see.

Cinder: Neo, remind me to never let you drive again.

Renegade 2023 Typeset Exchange: Some Of You by tangerinechar

I signed up again this year to participate in @renegadepublishing's annual typeset exchange. (For those not immersed in the lingo, the typeset is the formatted file that's printed out.) It can be as simple as adding a title page, chapter breaks, and page numbers... or you can get more complicated. And what better than an exchange event to go all out, and commit yourself to a truly ridiculous amount of formatting?

I was happy to typeset this MDZS modern AU for axandri in the exchange! Some Of You by tangerinechar is a Wangxian actor AU where an inadvisable drunk tweet from Lan Wangji sets off a series of events, and is a lot of fun! It also has a ton of social media in it, and I set myself the vaguely ridiculous goal of formatting it all with profile pictures for everyone.

I used a Twitter-blue inspired header and fonts for the title and chapter headings, and was stuck for a bit on what to put in for scene break dividers, and then it hit me... hashtags.

There were Twitter accounts for most of the main cast, and a whole host of recurring OC's, with twenty different profiles total. I spent some time looking for headshots and other pictures of the cast where they still looked like their character (Jiang Cheng's actor is very smiley! That one was the trickiest!), went along with all the other fandom riffs in the names that I could recognize (and got some help with a few), and snuck in pictures of both my cats.

(I thought I was almost done. I really did. And then just a few chapters from the end... there's eight pages of Tumblr posts and another eleven different unique profiles. Once I got over my initial despair... it did let me sneak in my other cat, and some icons a friend drew, as well.

Social media AUs, let me tell you... fun to read, a whole other adventure in typesetting. But I am pretty happy with how it turned out overall!

Bakugou for All X Neighborhood Vampire X Renegades: How does Himiko react to finding her bullied friend held captive by the MLA? How does Izuku react to being rescued by Himiko?

I don't think Himiko would be very happy about that. Well she'd be delighted to see him and when she finds out he has knife powers (because of course that's the part she focused on with metal control) she'd be thrilled to bits. But also she'd be super pissed at the MLA.

Midoriya is just happy to see her again, and still disoriented from everything he's been through. Probably less happy about her willingness to use lethal force, but like, it's the MLA who kidnapped and experimented on him, so

That’s just the thing, isn’t it? Wei Ying feels nothing. He doesn’t feel anything, and this emptiness should scare him. He knows he should be scared. He wants to be scared. He isn’t. Fear itself is never scary; fear is just a response. It means that your body wants you alive. It’s the absence of terror that scares him.

I had SO MUCH FUN with this bind! This one had a lot of firsts for me, and is one that I really poured my heart into due to its particular emotional impact on me (tl;dr - I was a piano major in college, burned out, this fic helped me fall in love with music again). It's an Untamed WangXian Pianists AU (TW for anyone interested that it deals with attempted suicide and life following that) and I tried to tie that into the design details literally everywhere I could think of. Black and white cover paper, music note scene breaks, and my absolute favorite part to create: sheet music title pages. The particular song used for that is a recurring motif in the fic and one that means a lot to me personally, and I knew I wanted to include it somehow. Unfortunately I couldn't find an existing image of the sheet music that was high enough quality to use how I wanted, so I used a sheet music program to input it myself!

This book was my first time doing any sort of edge decoration, and I had fun figuring out how to splatter paint with a toothbrush (Spouse: is that supposed to be blood? Me: no but also... kind of?) and it was also my first time doing endbands! (Shout out to the friends who walked me through it over voice chat one evening, and then rolled their eyes when I announced that I'd torn them out and done them over again. Twice.) I went with red and black for both of those parts to match the main characters canonical color scheme, and also because I liked the dramatic pop of color against the black and white cover.

Spine titling was done once again with a foil quill, and I decided to paint the Chinese title of the fic on the cover. I couldn't find a paintbrush that let me get as fine tipped and detailed as I wanted so I may or may not have used a toothpick to paint it on.

I prevailed over: somehow deleted half of my page numbers and had to reprint the WHOLE THING! Forgot to measure the boards as part of my spine width and had to do surgery with 2mm strips of paper! (Thankfully had allowed plenty of hinge because I didn't realize until I'd finished ALL of the titling and I would have cried if I couldn't salvage it) Truly this is my child and I adore how it turned out. Is it perfect? No. Are there things I would change? Sure. But I learned and I did and I'm so goddamn proud of it!
