'In one corner, veteran heavyweight Christopher Nolan. In the other, nimble visionary Greta Gerwig. Their big films come out on the same day – but whose will triumph at the box office?
We live in divisive times. Opinion is more tribal and entrenched than ever, the value of reasoned argument and willing compromise plummeting by the day. This volatility could spread to the multiplex next month, where a battle of the blockbusters is destined to make previous cinematic standoffs – Mothra v Godzilla, Alien v Predator, Kramer vs Kramer – look like games of playground pat-a-cake. Get ready, then, for Barbie v Oppenheimer.
Directed by celebrated auteurs (Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan respectively), and hyped by multiple trailers over the past year, both movies are scheduled to open on the same crowded day. Forget your QR codes: this is one time to buy a physical ticket and save the stub to show your grandchildren. Future generations will want to know where you stood on 21 July 2023 when Barbie met the bomb.
In the pink corner is Gerwig’s DayGlo toy story starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, who while away their days happily but vacuously in Barbie-land. In a plot apparently borrowed from Enchanted and The Purple Rose of Cairo, with a dash of Don’t Worry Darling, they swap their cosseted fairytale existence for our harsh modern world. (The trailer shows Barbie having her police mugshot taken after walloping a Venice Beach groper in the face.) The cast incorporates hot young things Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Jamie Demetriou and, most excitingly, the new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, as well as old hands Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon and Will Ferrell; Helen Mirren is on narrating duties.
The 39-year-old Gerwig is arguably as big a selling point as Robbie or Gosling, as well as a guarantor of quality control. The three-time Oscar nominee directed Lady Bird and Little Women, as well as co-directing with Joe Swanberg the long-distance love story Nights and Weekends, back in the days when she was the doyenne of the lo-fi indie “mumblecore” movement. Her co-writer on Barbie is her partner, the director Noah Baumbach, with whom she wrote gems such as Frances Ha and Mistress America. Back in 2010 when she was promoting Greenberg, the bittersweet Baumbach comedy which became her Hollywood springboard, she spoke of her childhood habit of jumbling up the letters in her name: “In second grade, I’d be writing ‘Great Gerwig, Great Gerwig’ on everything,” she said. These days, it’s more than just an anagram.
Her opponent is the 52-year-old Nolan, a five-time Oscar nominee who has heft on his side. His is the weightier directing CV (12 films), with Oppenheimer his longest yet: he recently confirmed that it is “kissing three hours”, which makes it more than an hour longer than Barbie. This is serious, spectacular event cinema, shot with Imax cameras and booked long ago into all that format’s venues – to the apparent chagrin of Tom Cruise, whose latest Mission: Impossible adventure opens a week earlier but will be relegated to smaller screens the instant Oppenheimer drops.
Nolan’s cast is every bit as impressive as Gerwig’s; as well as the perpetually haunted Cillian Murphy as the physicist Robert J Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb, Nolan has assembled Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Robert Downey Jr, Gary Oldman and Kenneth Branagh. The chances of any of them rollerblading à la Gosling in Barbie are negligible, which may help explain why Gerwig’s film is on track to have the more impressive opening weekend. Not that Oppenheimer will exactly bomb.
Barbie also has the edge when it comes to marketing opportunities, as might be expected of any movie adapted from merchandise. This goes way beyond the valley of the dolls: among the many tie-in products is an inflatable Barbie pool-float golf-cart, a Barbie dog’s basket, and an electric toothbrush capable of 36,000 sonic vibrations a minute – the same effect you get from watching Oppenheimer in Imax.
Unlike Barbie, Nolan’s film probably doesn’t have its own Exclusive Oral Beauty Partner, though given his protagonist’s chain-smoking tendencies there may be a teeth-whitening deal in the offing. And we shouldn’t rule out Oppenheimer throwing its hat in the ring when it comes to headgear. As far back as 2010, one plaintive user on thefedoralounge.com was searching “for a lid like the one the famous nuclear physicist wore,” citing a “2½-inch snap brim and a very thin ribbon” and concluding that “such a hat would be positively atomic”. Factor in the Cillian Murphy effect – this is the man who helped popularise the Peaky Blinders newsboy cap/undercut combo – and the Oppenheimer fedora and brown wool coat could be the look to replace Barbie’s summery pink once the nippier months roll around.
Some mild shade has already been thrown between the film’s respective camps on social media. “Greta Gerwig could do Oppenheimer but Christopher Nolan couldn’t do Barbie,” observed one tweet. Another overreached by proposing that “Margot Robbie could do Oppenheimer but Cillian Murphy couldn’t do Barbie” – clearly the work of someone who has never seen him in Breakfast on Pluto or Peacock. But the encouraging thing about the Barbie v Oppenheimer discourse is that, by and large, it has not followed the contours that often prevail in our online interactions. For anyone who loves cinema, the vibe feels closer to a cuddle than a cage fight.
There is real genius in this tactic of opening films catering for different audiences on the same day (known as counter-programming). The canny part is not what separates Nolan and Gerwig but what unites them: despite a clear contrast of style and sensibility, both directors possess a comparable skill, intelligence and passion, and tend to inspire loyalty in their fans. This same situation could never have arisen had Oppenheimer been pitted against, say, The Super Mario Bros Movie. Though that film is a smash, having grossed more than $1bn worldwide to date, it has nothing in it to propel cultural conversation along with profits.
Opening two films together that share similar DNA would also produce less of a spark. The experience of going to an afternoon screening of Ghostbusters on opening day in December 1984, then coming out and going straight back in to see Gremlins at teatime, was thrilling for my friends and me as 13-year-olds (especially as Gremlins was rated 15), but it was a routine sort of double bill on reflection: both were comedies that trafficked in the scary or supernatural.
What makes the combination of Barbie and Oppenheimer sing is that it is unlikely but not nonsensical. And though the films’ subjects are markedly different, there will be some overlap between their audiences. The major Rorschach test of our era, one Twitter user has suggested, will be whether you follow Oppenheimer with Barbie or vice versa. It’s no longer the case of “either/or” that it first appeared to be but rather “which one first?”. The Picturehouse chain is even extending the double bill idea by screening a selection of both directors’ past work in the coming weeks; audiences can see Lady Bird take flight alongside Interstellar, or pair Little Women and Dunkirk in a double bill of wartime stories, albeit from different wars.
Contrary to the way the rivalry was initially framed, this is no replay of the hostile Blur v Oasis Britpop war of the mid-1990s. Even the formulation of Barbie v Oppenheimer misrepresents the tenor of this unusual pairing: shouldn’t it be the more harmonious Barbie x Oppenheimer, in the style of today’s brand collaborations? Whichever film prevails financially, the result will be less meaningful to audiences than what these movies represent in a post-pandemic landscape that has seen famished exhibitors begging for new product.
Next month’s clash only came about in the first place because of Nolan’s commitment to cinemas over streaming. He would likely have set up Oppenheimer at his usual home, Warner Bros, had that studio not instigated a policy in 2021 (no longer in force today) of releasing its films simultaneously in cinemas and on HBO Max, in response to uncertainty during the pandemic. (Nolan, remember, had ruled out a streaming release for his previous film, Tenet, back in 2020 when cinema exhibition was at its most precarious.) Warner Bros still hopes to woo him back. Barbie is a Warners film, and if the studio had been distributing both pictures, they would never have let them go out on the same day. But Nolan took Oppenheimer to Universal – hence the scheduling pile-up.
No matter. The impact of Covid and the streaming revolution have been bruising, even in some cases annihilating, to parts of the industry. But contrary to the tagline from Alien Vs Predator – “Whoever wins … we lose” – the outcome of Barbie opening in lockstep with Oppenheimer can only be positive. Whichever one triumphs, cinema rules.'

Award Season is among us. Our reviewer Actor, Producer and Journalist Alex von Roon can't wait to check out the contenders starting off with HBO' s "Succession". How do you like Alexander as "Ken" in the Hit Movie "Barbie"? Von Roon did work with the director before and enjoyed her performance in "Greenberg"
For "Bild am Sonntag" Alex also met SAG Award nominee Tony Shalhoub on set in his trailer. Some comments were very interesting. We wonder how Mr. Monk would deal with a pandemic such as Corona.

Oppenheimer (2023)
running time: 180 minutes
directed by: Christopher Nolan
produced By: Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas, Charles Roven
starring: Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, Florence Pugh
music by: Ludwig Göransson
I'll give this movie a 9.5/10
I had the chance to finally watch Nolan's latest film on the big screen a couple of months ago. Initially I wanted to watch together with my friend on IMAX however by the time we wanted to check out the number of seats left available, most of the best seating areas towards the screen are fully booked and sold out. Which I then decided to watch solo in the cheaper standard hall morning showing time as my friend is still adamant in wanting to watch it on IMAX experience. I usually don't like to watch biopics as they mostly have a very long runtime and deals with lots of heavy subject matters but this film has really caught my attention since it was announced way back in 2021. This biopic is directed in a very unconventional style as opposed to a traditional one. The movie is filmed in a non linear narrative style with black and white scenes and colored scenes depicting different time periods of Oppenheimer's life as a typical biopic will usually shows the person's life in chronological order. My favourite scene in the entire movie has to be the trinity test scene of the first ever atomic explosion in history during the Manhattan Project. The scene is very visually striking with the flames dispersing all around the screen and masterfully crafted by Nolan who claimed that there is no CGI shots being used to film the movie at all. I would say this movie is the culmination of Nolan's entire filmography with the black and white scenes being a callback to his previous older movies like Memento and the non linear narrative plus WWII setting as a reference to Dunkirk. The score is hauntingly beautifully composed by Ludwig Göransson who worked on Nolan's previous movie Tenet. I really loved his track called "Can You Hear The Music" as it is very mesmerising and inspirational with the loud tempo increasing during the opening scene of how a young Oppenheimer progresses in his studies and his mind of his upcoming invention of nuclear physics. The entire star studded ensemble cast delivered an amazing job on the acting performances particularly the lead and supporting actors Robert Downey Jr as Lewis Strauss and Cillian Murphy who nails every single scene as J. Robert Oppenheimer from his accent to his mannerisms and facial expressions. This movie is a very strong contender to win or at the very least earn a lot of oscar nominations next year such as Best Picture, Director, Visual Effects, lead and supporting Actor, Cinematography and Score. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie a lot considering it has no action scenes and only fully dialogue as this movie also serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of using nuclear weapons that could cause a huge chain reaction to the world. The final shot of Oppenheimer closing his eyes and epilogue of the movie left me having a lot of thoughts on my mind after watching it as in typical Nolan fashion, he likes to leave his endings open ended for the audience. The scene is a parallel to the opening shot of raindrops falling from the sky with Oppenheimer watching them in silence. This will be my second favourite movie in his filmography after The Dark Knight. It's one of his undisputable masterpiece for the ages and leaves a long lasting impression for the audience. I will say this is the best movie that I had watched of the year.
Some of my favourite Quotes:
1. "Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to man. For this he was chained to a rock and tortured for eternity."
2. "They Won't Fear It Until They Understand It..."
3. "I Believe We Did."
4. "Now I Am Become Death, The Destroyer Of Worlds."

Dreams of Death and Ghosts
I’ve fallen behind quite a bit on the horror movie blog posts, oops. Let’s catch up on a few of the things we’ve been watching in our journey through the 1990s.
In Dreams (1999) was directed by Neil Jordan, who you may remember as the director of In the Company of Wolves, which we reviewed earlier (as well as, more famously, being the guy behind Interview with a Vampire). Like those well-known films, In Dreams is an adaptation of a novel -- one called “Doll’s Eyes” by Bari Wood. However, as adaptations go, this one is...a bit odd, in that it introduces some elements distinctly lacking in the source material.
In Dreams tells the story of a woman who receives precognitive dreams from time to time, not realizing that they are a sort of live feed from the mind of a murderer -- until, that is, her own child is killed. She becomes obsessed with the psychic connection, her husband gets her institutionalized, but nothing will stop her from hunting down the killer herself in search of some answers.
The killer is a young Robert Downey, Jr., with a tragic backstory, muddled motives and heaping side dish of transphobia. Following on the heels of Silence of the Lambs and not doing it anywhere nearly as well, this movie is loaded with all kinds of ugly horror tropes while also managing to be kind of a boring mess. What the hell, Neil Jordan?
(One striking thing this has made me think about: Iron Man really quite possibly saved RDJ’s life. If you don’t know, he grew up in a really dysfunctional household and was doing a lot of drugs by a rather young age. By the 1990s he was in all sorts of legal trouble and also nobody would hire him because they couldn’t insure him -- he was just that much of a disaster. But he is the perfect Tony Stark, and I think probably inhabiting that role did something really powerful for the guy long-term because he sure seems to have turned some stuff around in his life. But that’s neither here nor there).
Hideaway (1995) directed by Brett Leonard is the perfect brother-film for a double feature with the movie above. Based on a Dean Koontz novel, this tells the story of a cool dad (Jeff Goldblum) who undergoes some startling personality changes after being clinically dead and brought back. He seems to be sharing memories or consciousness with a murderer, but no one will believe him about it -- so he has to take matters into his own hands.
Why, yes, if you notice, the concept “I’m sharing POV with a killer and nobody believes me” is literally exactly the same in both movies, and so weirdly specific that it’s kind of surprising (even moreso that I can think of other films with that same premise).
What makes this one interesting is the way certain aspects of the story are handled differently on account of the lead character’s gender. It’s a pretty fascinating compare-contrast case study in how men and women’s narratives are perceived and told.
Actually this is a really solid and fine film right up to the final climax, which is so horribly stupid and cheesy that it kind of ruins everything that came before it. Still, it’s worth a watch if you’re interested in the question of gender in horror (especially in terms of who gets believed, about what, and why).
The Frighteners (1996) by Peter Jackson is not really a horror movie. It’s a pretty silly comedy, sort of like Beetlejuice, about a necromancer (Michael J. Fox) who uses his powers to fake hauntings and scam people out of their money. A charlatan using real ghosts to fake hauntings is pretty funny, but it gets even better when real murders start to follow and he’s got to solve the mystery himself.
There’s something just really fun and satisfying about “con artist forced to actually be good at the thing he’s been lying about for years” as a trope.
This movie appears to be mostly an excuse to show off all of the great things Peter Jackson’s newfangled Weta Workshop could do with special effects, which is kind of unfortunate because those effects did not age well at all in many cases. However, just a few years later Jackson would be tapped to make Lord of the Rings, and all of those special effects tricks would be put to spectacular use, so...thanks for that!
Seriously, is there anything weirder than Jackson -- of all people -- being the director who made LOTR? There is really nothing whatsoever in his filmography that suggested he would be good at that. And yet! Wild.

Ladies and gentlemen, it's time to head into the vault, to dig up some shit from years in the past.
Lemme just grab my shovel and...just a little...no no I got it it's fine...man, this is heavy with opinions, I bet it's a beaut!
...hmm, ranting about white folks. Well, whatever sticks to the wall, I guess. Roll 'em.
Representation
Dated: 3 years ago
Source: Dropbox
As a white man, I'm tired of listening to white men's stories.
Every time I watch TV or a movie, I'm subjected to and bombarded with story after story of Rich White Man, Scrappy White Man, Underdog White Man, Clever White Man, Brilliant White Man, Genius Scientist White Man, Unruly Doctor White Man, Tough Cop White Man, Strong Capable White Man.
White man, white man, white man, white man, white man.
If I wanted to hear a story about a white man, I would talk to most of the people I interact with at work, or in my social group, or on the internet, or literally anywhere in my life. I have four brothers and dozens of cousins, a bunch of friends and a lot of coworkers. The sum total percentage of white men in my life is probably around 80.
So why do I also need Christian Bale's Batman, Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man, Finn Jones's Iron Fist, Benedict Cumberbatch's Dr. Strange and Sherlock, Hugh Laurie's House M.D., Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones, Henry Cavill as Superman, Andrew Garfield and Toby Maguire as Spider-Man and about a thousand others I could name? Yes, I get that most of these characters are iconic and timeless and are being brought to life on the big screen, some for the first time and others for the fiftieth, but why are these stories so interesting that they need to be told and retold? What makes these characters so compelling while others are left to the side?
The Avengers are full of almost as many white men as Congress. Where is my Black Widow movie? When do we get to explore Falcon's story? Is Nick Fury (thank you to Avengers Ultimate, by the way, for going a different route with him in the first place) ever going to have some light shine on his background?
And don't get me started on "people don't want non-white male superheroes." Jessica Jones was heavily lauded by critics and views alike, and sits at 93%/90% on Rotten Tomatoes for critic/viewer response, respectively. When Luke Cage was released, it broke Netflix. BROKE. NETFLIX. It's at 96% Fresh.
And what about non-superhero stories? Well, Luther is 90% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and Idris Elba is about 150% Fresh in real life.
Even if you say that the protagonist doesn't matter, that it's the writers or the producers or the actors that make it good and not whether the star is white or black or male or female, I would agree with you - and say that if it doesn't matter, stop stacking the deck with white guys. Nick Fury was a J. Jonah Jameson lookalike in the original comics, minus the Hitler-stache, and now he's Samuel L. Jackson. You don't get cooler than that, and we're talking about a guy whose actual name is FURY. To be fair, who better to play him?
But if it doesn't matter in one direction, it doesn't matter in every direction - get us some representation.
"Sure," you might say, "but what about video games?"
Alright, let's compare apples to apples. Let's take a game that was well regarded and compare it to its sequel - I'm talking, of course, about Watch Dogs. Mainly because it's a good example, but also because I've played both of them.
Watch Dogs, starring the absolutely wooden Aiden Pearce doing his best impersonation of Christian Bale's Batman minus the charisma, clocks in at 80% on Metacritic. That's a pretty good score - I've paid full AAA price for games that rated lower than that. Its sequel stars Marcus Halloway, a young black hacker aspiring to follow in similar footsteps as our aforementioned hacker vigilante, who starts off his story by exhibiting personality traits such as humor, emotion and the ability to talk to other people without outward brooding. I've read a lot of user reviews that claim tokenism, calling out the game as a "cuck-liberal fantasy" that "drinks the Kool-Aid" to "wash down the blue pill" and other such terms intended to write off a thing as being too inclusive.
It scored 82%.
Now, you could make the argument that every aspect of the game was improved, and that you don't care about the characters or their backgrounds/races/nationalities. You could argue that it's a better game because of the gadgets, or the missions, or the story, or the UI or anything else. You'd have a good point - but you would be missing mine.
I'm not saying a black protagonist made for a better game. I'm saying that a game with a black protagonist WAS a better game. I'm saying that representation does not automatically turn off the audience. I'm saying that you can make a thing starring a not-white/male character and have it work.
But yes, I'm also saying that Marcus Halloway is a three-dimensional character while Aiden Pearce is a lifeless stawman. "Brooding white guy" is not cool anymore. It's boring. It's samey. I didn't care about Aiden, I didn't care about his strained relationship with his sister, I didn't care about his guilt over his niece.
I cared more about the drunken did-they-didn't-they one-night stand Marcus had prior to the opening credits of the sequel than I did about Adrian's entire story in the original.
I don't need another white guy hero. I don't want to see the trials of a rich white guy, or a scrappy white guy. Show me the struggles of a Chinese man. Show me how a black woman deals with life in her neighborhood. Show me what it's like to live a day in the life of a Mexican teenager. What's going on with the woman in Sub-Saharan Africa whose cousin was just arrested for a crime they didn't commit? How does a slice of Syrian life look in 1987? Afghanistan in 1998? Egypt in the 1960's? Zimbabwe at the turn of the century? Give me something interesting. Give me something original. Give me something new.
Give me something I haven't seen before.
And maybe give someone else a hero for a change.

There was an idea: to bring together a group of extraordinary, but stupidly impulsive, young wizards and witches, who would solve mysteries and fight evil, just as Harry Potter and his friends did a generation ago. The fact that the American school Ilvernorny seems to be sending all of their rejects to Hogwarts also increases the need for a program to keep these rule-breakers under some kind of control. Nickademus "Mad-Eye" Fury leads the Order of the Avengers.
