Kurt Cobain (singer)

Treason' Proves There’s More to Charlie Cox Than 'Daredevil'

The actor beloved for 'Daredevil' has much more to offer the world, especially in Netflix's 'Treason.'

If there’s one thing most Marvel fans can agree on, it’s the impeccable casting of Charlie Cox as Daredevil/Matt Murdock. Like Robert Downey Jr. and Hugh Jackman before him, few actors have better inhabited the tormented skin of their superhero counterpart. But Cox was already establishing himself as an acting force to be reckoned with prior to 2015's Daredevil, leaving a trail of memorable performances that culminated in his ongoing MCU role. Five years after Daredevil's cancelation, Cox returned as a Netflix leading man for the service's new original series, Treason. The role of Adam Lawrence, an MI6 agent devoted to protecting his country and family yet harboring the weight of past indiscretions, proves an ideal vehicle for Cox's defining traits as an actor and cements him as more than just a guy in a red devil suit.

What Is 'Treason' About?

Treason is a non-stop espionage thrill ride reminiscent of the BBC classic Spooks, The Night Manager, and Daniel Craig's era of James Bond. After Russian spy Kara (Olga Kurylenko) poisons the head of MI6 (Ciarán Hinds), second-in-command Lawrence is thrust into the intelligence agency's leadership vacuum. And it comes with no shortage of expectations, as Lawrence must balance being Britain's first line of defense with juggling the politics of jealous colleagues, managing a CIA investigation into his loyalties, keeping his wife and children safe, and stopping Kara from using their old love affair to blackmail him.

As Treason's Lawrence, Cox funnels the individual qualities that make him a compelling figure into one role, particularly his earnestness, ferocity, delicacy, and ability to walk the fine line between a good man with noble intentions and a flawed human with ongoing failures. When Treason opens, Lawrence's life is idyllic: a devoted wife, two children, a cushy job, even a fancy house. Cox's performance, naturally, reflects this; Lawrence is relaxed and assured whether he's visiting with his son's classmates or issuing severe orders to his staff. His relationship with his wife Maddy (Oona Chaplin) is tender, and he's playful with his kids. That security quickly falls apart as his past indiscretions catch up with him. The revelation that Kara has secretly engineered his lucrative career, which raises the CIA's suspicions about his allegiances and invites personal betrayal, leaves Lawrence fearful and flailing in the wind. He has no choice except to clear his name, expose the true traitor, and protect those he loves.

Cox Brings Emotional Maturity to His Roles

No matter the character or the size of his part, Cox brings emotional maturity to the material. An inherent commitment simmers beneath his body language and expressions, a sense that the actor is reaching deep to find his character's truth and performing with all he has. There's no half-assing it with Cox, at least on the surface. In Daredevil, his resolute and angry tension allows for no doubt concerning Matt's passion for protecting the helpless and redeeming his home, nor the depths of his barely restrained rage. And despite Lawrence's questionable actions in Treason, if the audience is meant to question his devotion to king and country, Cox's natural sincerity makes Lawrence's ultimate integrity a foregone conclusion. He's too good of a person when and where it counts.

This is best exemplified in relation to Lawrence's family. Adam isn't the type to sacrifice his loved ones for the greater good. Rather, he prioritizes them so highly that he commits treason to rescue his kidnapped daughter Ella (Beau Gadsdon). With her life at risk, he can't focus on the larger threat even though he's leading MI6. He keeps secrets from his wife out of shame, fidgeting and staring agitatedly into the middle distance. When he begs Maddy to understand that his love for her has never wavered and his secrets stem from guilt, all of that earlier intensity transforms into something quieter if no less vehement. It's an earnestness rooted in a gentle and steadfast love like Matt Murdock's encounters with Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) or Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson).

The same energy applies when Lawrence reunites with his daughter or reassures his frightened son Callum (Samuel Leakey). Cox rarely raises his voice in Treason and doesn't need to. The thrumming energy in his physicality says enough. As a character, Lawrence feels lived-in despite Treason's fast-paced plot, and Cox demonstrating those consistent characteristics sets him apart as a believable and adept actor.

Taken in the context of his past roles, that easy truthfulness isn't a surprise. Daredevil could be a ludicrous series in different hands, but Cox contributes to its grounded style by never overacting while still rising to the emotional level a scene requires. Whether it's questioning his lifelong faith or fighting an array of evil ninjas, Murdock's pain is visceral in every punch and broken rib, as is his repeated heartbreak. Hatred, remorse, and love echo off the screen and transfer naturally into applicable instances in Treason.

'Boardwalk Empire' Was a Breakout Role For Cox

Take HBO's Boardwalk Empire, where Cox portrays IRA member Owen Sleater, the right-hand man to main character and criminal Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi). Sleater is armed with a sharp intelligence and ruthless willingness to assassinate enemies as much as he's armed with guns. He's a man made rough around the edges by poverty, but in true Cox form there's an unexpected sensitivity to his romance with Nucky's wife Margaret (Kelly Macdonald). His demeanor softens at their first meeting, and as their affair progresses, it's clear that he adores her enough to move heaven and earth if she asked. He doesn't conceal his infatuation, and his ensuing Victorian-levels of yearning is disarming.

If only Owen's optimism weren't at the mercy of an HBO series. After a mission, he returns to Margaret and Nucky as a corpse in a box, but his goofy smiles and belief in love remain unique to Boardwalk Empire's world and help distinguish Cox's strengths. Owen, Matt, and Treason's Lawrence are each victims of their romantic and familial fidelities, and the sheer commitment from Cox guarantees that audiences engage with him.

A Star Is Born In 'Stardust'

That holds true in a different (and surprisingly happy) way in the fantasy adventure Stardust, which was Cox's breakout role and now a cult classic. A besotted young man who promises to retrieve a fallen star for his lady love, Cox's Tristan instead falls in genuine love with the star herself, Yvaine (Claire Danes), over a series of adventures together. Their chemistry sparkles with classic enemies-to-lovers banter and Tristan's romanticism is bright and charming. He's the ideal floppy-haired hero for the genre: a swashbuckling swordfighter, a smooth dancer, and delicately devoted to Yvaine. Even in 2007, Cox's innate presence and emotional substance distinguished him from the many young men of the early 2000s who starred in fantasy films.

Give Charlie Cox All the Roles, Please

Naturally, Cox has more to offer the world than Daredevil even as the buzz around his return (and his own excitement) soars high. Seeing him recognized by Netflix again with Treason is a deserved delight. He makes each role unique, yet the consistency across his career is how each character feels natural. He combines fervor with honest fragility, and Treason undoubtedly proves that Cox possesses the necessary caliber to lead any series.

1884 – Born: James Elroy Flecker (d.1915); English poet, novelist and playwright. Born in London, and educated at Dean Close School, Cheltenham, where his father was headmaster, and Uppingham School, he studied at Trinity College, Oxford, and Caius College, Cambridge. While at Oxford he was greatly influenced by the last flowering of the Aesthetic movement there, under John Addington Symonds.

He died of tuberculosis in Davos, Switzerland. His death at the age of thirty was described at the time as "unquestionably the greatest premature loss that English literature has suffered since the death of Keats".

His Collected Poems (1916) were published the year after he died at age 30. His poetry shares one trait in common with that of his contemporary, Rupert Brooke: the sexuality is ambiguous. There is no question, however, that Flecker was Gay. His lover was the classicist J.D. Beazley, one of the world's great authorities on Greek vases.

His most widely known poem is "To A Poet A Thousand Years Hence". The most enduring testimony to his work is perhaps an excerpt from "The Golden Journey to Samarkand" inscribed on the clock tower of the barracks of the British Army's 22nd Special Air Service regiment in Hereford.

1960 – Bryan Lourd is an American talent agent. He has been partner, managing director and co-chairman of Creative Artists Agency (CAA) since October 1995.

Lourd was born in New Iberia, Louisiana. His brother, Blaine Lourd, is an investment advisor. He attended New Iberia Senior High School, where he played the lead in several high school musicals. He earned a degree from the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism in 1982.

Lourd and actress Carrie Fisher were together from 1991 to 1994. They have one daughter, actress Billie, born in 1992. Lourd married Bruce Bozzi, the co-owner of The Palm, on October 12, 2016, and Lourd legally adopted Bozzi's daughter, Ava. Lourd was elected to the board of trustees of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2011. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. He was appointed to the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities in 2009 by President Barack Obama and to the board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2015.

1969 – The Homosexual Information Center protested at the offices of the Los Angeles Times to protest the newspaper's refusal to print the word "homosexual" in ads after it refused to print an ad announcing a group discussion on homosexuality.

1983 – Andrew Hayden-Smith, born Andrew John Smith, is a British actor and television presenter best known for his work with CBBC.

Auditions for popular CBBC children's serial drama Byker Grove were held at his school and he won the part of Ben Carter, making his first appearance in the eighth series of the show in 1995.

Initially just using the name Andrew Smith, he appeared as a guest on Saturday morning CBBC show Live & Kicking with several other characters from the show. Smith soon became a regular guest on the show. This led to appearances on other shows and also in teen-magazines, as well as two pantomime appearances. In 2001 he applied for Equity membership and was accepted under the name Andrew Hayden-Smith (Hayden being another surname in his family), as the name Andrew Smith was already taken.

In 2004, the ex-Byker Grove actor and CBBC presenter Andrew did the unthinkable for a young man on kids' TV - he told the world he was gay. At the risk of being outed by a newspaper, he beat the tabloids to the punch and did an interview with Attitude magazine:

"Coming out is pretty scary. It's bad enough when you're almost certain that the majority of people around you will be totally cool with it. I was 21 and presenting kids TV at the time and was commended for what everyone kept saying was such a brave step."

It did his career no harm, and he's proved an inspiration - and eye candy - for young gay men across the country.

Andrew has since appeared regularly on stage and in Doctor Who. Hayden-Smith appeared in the episodes "Rise of the Cybermen", "The Age of Steel" and "Doomsday" as Jake Simmonds in the 2006 series of Doctor Who. He returned to CBBC having completed the filming, but decided that he wished to concentrate on acting. His final day of presenting was on 7 July 2006, the day before his third and final Doctor Who appearance.

This year had been tough for Robert and his family, especially on his youngest daughter, Y/N, who was five years old. Everything going on in their lives had made her really stressed, affecting how she behaved at school. She wasn’t someone who misbehaved, but her teacher noticed that she’d become a lot quieter recently and had fallen out with her friends. Trying to cheer her up, Robert decided, after a lot of careful thinking, to adopt a dog. They’d been considering this for a while, him and Susan, but they felt like now was the perfect time.

They had decided on a Labrador, as they had heard they were good with children and other animals. His name was Charlie.

Robert and Susan decided to surprise Y/N and her siblings when they got home from school. They brought them in out of the car and told them to wait in the living room while Susan drove to the dog shelter to pick him up. They told them to open their eyes as they let Charlie go out of their arms, running up to them and wagging his tail excitedly.

“Daddy, it’s a doggy! What’s his name?” asked Avri.

“His name is Charlie. He’s five years old,”

“That’s the same age as me!” Y/N said, bending down to stroke him. “Do we have the same birthday, Daddy?”

“No, sorry, kiddo. His birthday is June 27th,”

“That was just recently! Happy Birthday, Charlie!” Exton shouted.

“So, we take it you like Charlie then, guys?” asked Susan, smiling when they all nodded.

“Thank you, Mommy and Daddy!” Y/N exclaimed, getting up and giving them a huge hug each.

After the successful Crimes and Punishments and with the Sherlock Holmes IP back in the mainstream media forefront thanks to the Robert Downey Jr movies, Frogwares had the perfect storm for one more title of their long running series. It would be an easy win: to improve the existing framework, assess to the criticisms from the previous game and make some cosmetic changes in order to make it more enticing for the newcomers with bombastic set pieces to break some of the slower paced moments.

The game starts strong, with a glimpse of a future event of the opening case in a classic case of “how did we get here?” moment. A simple case of a missing parent in the behest of a young child soon evolves into a horrifying conspiracy and the first of the many action and time-based segments sprinkled in with quick time events throughout. This opening case is relentless, quickly introducing the new mechanics yet somewhat expecting that the player have already experienced Crimes and Punishments to catch up with the older mechanics. Old favorites like Sherlock’s deduction and imagination are intact and the chemical table is still as varied and engaging as before until a story event puts it out of the commission for the remainder of the game, and the picklock system had a complete overhaul that can be said to be more realistic and require a little less of suspension of disbelief. The new balancing minigame is far less frustrating, thankfully, and the eavesdrop mechanic would be further refined in Sherlock Holmes Chapter One.

The true meat of the changes are the action scenes, seemed to have been implemented to please those who say that adventure games are too slow or too boring. In the previous game Holmes was no stranger in going into a fistfight with a suspect, but now every case needs to have a movie-like action moment or something eye-catching to punctuate and it sometimes can fit the narrative or be completely out-of-place like the “Indiana Jones”-esque puzzle that takes place entirely in Sherlock’s mind, as opposed the interesting writing in the Blood Bath case. The stealth sequences can also be frustrating and some of the action “puzzles” are a matter of repeating it and memorizing the right sequence until getting it right and surviving or to be annoyed enough to hit the “skip” button and miss the achievement. Crimes and Punishments also had clunky action, however they were far shorter and sparse. Neither games had the option of creating save slots and only in this one it was a feature that I wished it was present.

The overall narrative arc is incredible strong this time with a character from the ending of The Testament of Sherlock Holmes shows up and is an important role until the end: Sherlock’s daughter. The tension about this thread keeps on building up every passing case until a bombastic crescendo that culminates in a final case without any excess, sometimes even bordering on the surreal to reflect Holmes’ state of mind. Sadly, this time Watson is out of the picture most of the time and seldom partaking in the story. It can be rather jarring how he is present in the main promo materials and is hardly seen during the investigations or have anything to contribute except in the two last cases. Perhaps it was deliberate so Sherlock can have more screen time with his daughter and in the past the “teleporting Watson” was a joke known even to those who haven’t played the game so it would be easier on the technical side to save John for specific moments in the plot.

Another obvious improvement was in the graphics: at first it may be strange how Holmes and Watson look younger and this isn’t a prequel, in fact the ending of Crimes we are hinted about the new mysterious neighbor that will cause some strife between Holmes and his daughter. How the redesign might affect the enjoyment of the title might depend on how attached to the older version or how it affects the feeling of continuity, and it also has an entirely different voice cast with Alex Jordan becoming the current voice for Sherlock. Other existing characters like Lestrade and Wiggins are the same design-wise, except for improved textures and models, and some previously existing environments have some slight graphical updates or were even expanded, like in the case of Baker Street. Still, it doesn’t feel like cutting corners, merely part of the continuity. The game is simply gorgeous to look at, some of the uncanniness of the human models have been ironed out for the most part and the lighting glitch is gone. The locations are far more detailed and have strong atmosphere and composition, really inspiring the feeling of places lived-in or decadent.

It can be hard to recommend this game. A mid-tier adventure game bereft with quick time events to build up more excitement but that ends up building up frustration instead. It is clear how much Frogwares care for the series and their attempts to make it always fresh and engaging can be felt in every detail. Unfortunately there were a few more misses than hits in this one but still a solid title that deserves to be played at least once.

After opening up the season with a couple of wins, the Steelers got ready to hit the road to New Orleans. Becca was in her office, writing emails back to the press requesting interviews or comments on the team when a knock on the door pulled her focus. She looks up to see her father in her doorway. “You need something Dad?”

“Just checking to see how the media is doing.”

“They have a lot of requests for interviews with Coach, Ben, TJ and the big three.”

“Big three?”

“Chris, Sebastian and Anthony. The big three.”

“Ah. Well, I’m sure you will make the right choices.”

“I will.” She turned back to her work. Rich loitered for a moment. “What?”

“Becca, I know you are angry��”

“I get it. You want to protect me. But you don’t even know him.”

“He’s a football player. That’s enough.”

“He’s not Tom. And it doesn’t matter anyways because you scared him off. The first guy who was interested not just in me but Charlie too.” Becca turned away, refusing to cry.

“Sweetheart…”

“Just go Dad. I have a meeting.” She wiped under her eyes and grabbed her purse.

“Meeting with who?”

“The attorneys. I got a petition from Tom about visitation.”

“Do you want me to go with you?”

“No.”

“Rebecca…”

“Save it. I’m a big girl.”

Becca drove to the office, and parked, sitting in her car trying to calm herself. Her phone pinged and she looked to see what it was and smiled.

C: I miss you

B: miss you too

C: tonight?

B: maybe. Have to see how this meeting goes

C: can’t believe he’s doing this.

B: neither can I

Becca walked into her lawyer’s office, Downey and Associates. Robert Downey Jr. is the best Pittsburgh has to offer. He was in the lobby, waiting for her. “Rebecca.”

“Becca, how many times must we do this Rob?”

“Kid, I’ve known you since you were yay high,” motioning to his hip. “I can call you whatever I want.” He embraces the girl. “Let’s get started.” He led her to his office. “Coffee, water, shot?”

“Funny.” She sat in one of the office chairs across from the desk. “Just tell me.”

“Tom is petitioning.”

“You said. Visitation, right?”

“Custody.”

“Excuse me?”

“Tom is petitioning for full custody of Charlotte.”

Becca is stunned into silence. She stared blankly at Robert. “Custody?”

Robert sits next to her. “Hey, focus on me.” She looks at him. “Good Now breathe.” She inhales a deep breath and releases it slowly. “Good. Becca, we are gonna fight this. He’s barely a presence in Charlie’s life. Does she even know who he is?”

“No, she doesn’t. When he denied us, I never told her about her dad and she doesn’t ask.”

“That’s good,” Robert began to pace in his office. “I’m still trying to figure out what set him off.”

“Probably seeing me with Chris Evans,” she replied.

“Evans? The new quarterback?”

“That would be the one.” Becca drew up her knees in the chair. “Robert, what is he trying to do?”

“I think he is aiming for shared custody but going full out. Its odd. Has he communicated with you?”

“No. Well,” she thought back, “he went to the diner before the season started. Said he wanted to visit with Charlie. I told him to go through out attorneys. Then he asked why Chris got to develop a relationship with her. I may have snapped.”

Robert paced around for a moment before sitting. “Ok, from now on, do not engage with Tom in any way shape or form. If he reaches out to you, you forward it to me.” He clasped his hands together. “Does your father know about Evans?”

“No. And I would like to keep it that way.”

“Alight. Attorney-client privilege it is. Becca, you have to know that this might come out during the hearings.”

“I know. Please Robert, I just want to be happy, and Chris makes me happy. He loves Charlie and Charlie loves him.”

“I will do everything we can. But please be open minded. We may have to concede shared custody. Tom is unfortunately a good father with his other children.”

As Becca drove away from Robert’s office, she thought about her history with Tom. How charming he had been, sweet, kind and gentle. She shook her head. Once he found out about the pregnancy, he had turned cruel, saying Becca was just trying to use him for money.

The first hot tear rolled down her face when he remembered his words.

You were nothing but a good time. But I’m not the father so you can just fucking leave.

She wasn’t paying attention to where she was going until she parked. She looked up to see that she was at Chris’s house. She got out and ran to the front door, hitting the bell frantically. When Chris opened the door, she was a mess of tears, mascara running, hyperventilating. “Becca?” He pulled her to him as she started to sob.

Chris picked her up and carried her to the couch. He cradled her as she sobbed into his chest. He whispered comforting words, stroking her back, kissing her hair. As she calmed, he moved to cup her face and wipe her tears away. “Angel, tell me what’s wrong.”

“Tom wants full custody of Charlie.” Her lower lip trembled. “He wants to take my baby girl from me.” That set her off again.

“Hey, hey, breathe Angel. That is not going to happen, ok.”

“But he petitioned and…”

“No, Becca, we are going to fight this.”

Becca looked back at him, “We?”

“Yes, we. Becca I am in this with you, ok? If we are in a relationship, then I will stand by your side. No one is going to take Charlie from you.”

Becca snuggled into Chris. “Thank you.”

“No need to thank me, Angel. I’ll always be here for you.“

They sat like that for a moment before Becca squirmed in Chris’s lap. “I need to get going. I have to pack.”

“You coming with the team to the Big Easy?”

“Someone has to keep you guys in line. Lord knows Ben doesn’t do it.”

Chris smiled, “Do you think we could have a date while we are over there?”

“Chris….”

“We can go somewhere off the main drag and have dinner. Just you and me, Angel.”

Becca looks at him as he gives her a puppy dog look. She sighs, “fine, ok, yes, I would love to go on a date with you.”

Chris pumped his fist in the air. “Yes!” He leaned in and kissed Becca hard. Becca came away giggling. “Ok, I’ll see you on the plane. “

New Orleans is known for two things, Mardi Gras and football. Pittsburgh rolls in, a rare meeting in the Big Easy but Chris is pumped. Landing in New Orleans, he, Sebastian and Anthony head out to the town after checking into the hotel. Laughing and enjoying themselves, they find a table in the back of a bar.

“Chris, how are things with Becca?” Anthony asks, sipping his beer.

“They’re good. I mean, she and I and Charlie are good. That kid is nothing but energy. Dodger sleeps like a baby every time they are over. It’s good.” Chris takes a swig of his beer.

“I, uh, heard about the custody hearing,” Sebastian said, not looking at Chris.

“Lizzy?”

“Yeah. She mentioned Becca had the girls over and she was crying. Heard her dad is livid right now.”

“Yeah, I know. She came to me right after she saw her attorney.” Chris leaned his head back. “Brady is playing a dangerous game.”

“Chris, you can’t let it get to you. You have to focus. We meet the Patriots in three weeks.”

“I know that. But I want nothing more than to protect Becca and Charlie from that asshole.”

“I appreciate that Chris,” Anthony replies. “We both do. But you also have the team to think about. Not to mention what happens if Brady orders a hit on you.”

“He’s a dick but I don’t think he would take it that far.”

“Just, be careful,” Sebastian says. “Love can make people do stupid things, but jealousy can make you do psychotic things.”

Chris thought about what Sebastian said. He was crazy in love with Becca, that much was obvious but the nagging feeling that Tom was not done with Becca was not lost on him. He glanced at his watch. “Sorry to cut and run but I need to get ready for a date.”

Becca was slipping on her heels when she heard a knock on the door. She checked the mirror one more time before she opened the door. There stood Chris, his six foot frame completely in black, the shirt had a couple of buttons open on top, his dark hair styled back. Becca swallowed. “H-Hi.”

“Angel, wow. You look gorgeous.” She was wearing a black mini dress that hugged her curves, deep v and a flared skirt that finished just above her knee. New Orleans was still warm in October, so her legs were naked until they got to her heels. “Now I’m not so sure if I want to show you off or keep you here and peel that dress off of you.” Chris licked his lips as he continued to stare.

Becca flushed. She looked down to hide it, but Chris lifted her chin. “You look beautiful.” He placed a soft kiss on her lips. “C’mon, let me feed you and then we can come back here.”

“Okay.” She grabbed her clutch and they headed out into the night. Chris never let go of Becca’s hand, taking comfort in the warmth, her small hand engulfed in his. They made it to a small café away from the main part of New Orleans. They were seated in the back. The menu was traditional creole but elevated. “Did you research this?”

“I did,” Chris replied with a twinkle. “It had the best reviews, and it was away from everything so we could have some privacy.” He took her hand. “I know you are worried, but I wanted this for us.”

Becca smiled. They ordered and talked about everything, how Charlie was doing in school, what the social media plan was for the Steelers, how practice was going. They only avoided talking about Tom and the upcoming custody hearing. Tonight wasn’t about that. It was about them.

After paying and leaving the restaurant, Chris and Becca walked around a little community garden, never letting their hands go, still talking. “Would it be wrong to say that I see a future with you?" Becca asked.

“Why would it be wrong?” Chris turned to face Becca.

“I dunno. We haven’t been together long. We’ve only known each other for six months. But every night,” she looks up at him, “every night I dream about us and our family. And it scares me, Chris. Because it feels so right.”

“Are you worried that I’ll walk away from this? That I might leave?”

“A little. My life, my whole world is in Pittsburgh. But I know, as crazy as it sounds, I would follow you anywhere.”

“Rebecca, you aren’t alone.” Chris tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “I’ve told you before that you and Charlie are it for me. You are endgame. Angel, I have the same dreams too. Eventually, we will tell your family that we are together, and everything will be fine. I promise.”

“I just don’t want to see your dream taken away Chris.”

“My dream is you, Angel. You and Charlie and Dodger. Us, together.”

Becca stares into his eyes, his blue drowning her in his honesty. “I – I think I love you Chris.” She bit her bottom lip as she looks down, blushing at her confession.

Chris tilted her head to look at him. He pulled her bottom lip from her teeth. “I know I’m in love with you Becca.”

“Really?” Her eyes started to shiny from the tears forming.

“Really. I love you Becca.”

“I love you too Chris.” She reached up to kiss him and he pulled her close, a hand in her hair and the other on her back.

Just two kids in love.

With a photographer to capture it all.

The game was back and forth, and Chris was doing everything he could. But the Saints weren’t backing down. His fourth sack of the game left him sore. There was only ten seconds left on the clock and the Steelers were down by four. They needed the touchdown for the win. Chris called the play and Sebastian and Ju-Ju lined up on one side while Chase Claypool lined up on the other. Anthony was behind Chris for the fake handoff.

“Blue 42, Blue 42, hut hut!” Chris was hiked the ball and completed the fake before see Chase wide open. He launched it, getting knocked down in the process but he watched as the ball slipped through Chase’s hands as time expired. He put his head down and laid on the turf for a moment.

They lost.

He lost.

His first loss in the NFL.

It hurt. His lineman, DeCastro reached over to help him up. “Its ok Chris. It happens.”

“I know.” Chris walked to congratulate Jameis Winston and then walked off the field. The locker room is subdued with quiet interviews happening as the rest of the guys change and head to the buses. Chris took a moment and head his cell phone ring. “Hello?”

“Chris, its Becca’s mother, Avery.”

“Hi Mrs. Rooney.”

“Avery, please. Umm, I got your number from Becca. I need your help. Charlie, she watched the game, and she is very upset.”

“Oh. Ok, can I talk to her?”

“I’m sorry I know this must be the last thing you need.”

“Its ok Avery.” He heard the phone move before a small sniffle was heard. “Charlie?”

“Chris. Are you ok?”

“I’m ok munchkin.” He heard her wail. “Tell me what’s wrong.”

“We lost and I saw you get tackled and you didn’t get up,” she wailed.

“I’m ok sweetheart. It happens. We can’t win every game.” He continued to listen to her cry. “Listen munchkin, how about when I get home, we go for some ice cream. You, me, your mama, Anthony, Sebastian?”

“You promise?”

“I promise. I love you Charlie.”

“I love you too Chris.” Chris leaned back in his chair, heartbroken at the cries of his little girl. The thought shook him. Charlie was his little girl. She took his heart and held in her tiny hands along with her mama. Now all he wanted was to get back to her, to them and hold them close. His little family.

'When Christopher Nolan's historical epic "Oppenheimer" made its way into theaters, it did so fronting serious A-list energy in stars Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., and Florence Pugh. Impressive as those names are, "Oppenheimer"'s extended cast of supporting players whom Nolan assembled is truly jaw-dropping, with names like Casey Affleck, Gary Oldman, Kenneth Branagh, Jack Quaid, and Rami Malek topping the list. If you scroll far enough down the "Oppenheimer" IMDb page, you'll even see the name of Mr. James Remar, who played U.S. Secretary of War Henry Stimson in the film.

If you've seen "Oppenheimer," you know Remar's character doesn't garner a ton of screen time. Like most of the film's supporting team, however, the actor more than made the most of his moments. He even added to one of the film's most powerful scenes, reportedly improvising the line of dialogue where Stimson removes Kyoto from the list of possible bombing sites in Japan in part because he and his wife honeymooned there. It's a powerful moment, to be certain. And it's just one of many Remar has delivered over the years.

Fans of 1997's "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" hardly need a reminder of Remar's skill, as the actor put just as much energy into playing super-powered kung fu fighter Raiden in the film. Of course, given the video game adaptation's critical and commercial shortcomings, "MK: Annihilation" hardly ranks among the actor's biggest hits. And yes, Remar has contributed to quite a few hits in his decades-long career.

To be fair, the general shortcomings of "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" hardly rest on the shoulders of James Remar, with producer Lawrence Kasanoff claiming in the 2017 book "Lights, Camera, Game Over!" that studio bosses forced the filmmakers to release the movie before it was actually finished. Lack of polish aside, "MK: Annihilation" has become a low-key cult hit over the years, with certain fans now embracing its schlocky, B-movie energy.

As it happens, that cult status is sort of fitting since one of Remar's first big roles came in Walter Hill's 1979 cult hit crime thriller "The Warriors." Remar was quick to capitalize on that early success, scooping up roles in hit '80s TV shows like "Hill Street Blues," "Miami Vice," and "The Equalizer." He'd also appear in celebrated films like William Friedkin's "Cruising" (opposite Al Pacino), Hill's Eddie Murphy vehicle "48 Hrs.," Francis Ford Coppola's "The Cotton Club," and Gus Van Sant's landmark indie "Drugstore Cowboy."
