Mind Map International Day Project 2020
Putri Audy Fahira - 016 - Vanuatu
Tumblr media
Climate change eventually becomes so unconsciously massive-destructive problems among us, particularly even in every small territorial entity such as a village. My village which used to always look amazing and full of dazing fields and trees is slowly turning into various kinds of industrial activities. Just like in an area that is not far from where I live, where several companies stand on land that was once a stretch of fields around a beautiful river and causes pollution in water, soil, and air. Apart from that, the problem of burning solid waste also occurs and I still found it every day that my neighbors always burn rubbish around the house.
Various solutions have also been made, such as the "Pagi Sampah" program and there is someone who's in charge of picking up trash every morning so that it can be collected and recycled. However, this is not yet optimal because, in the reality, this solid waste is not carried out every day, so the neighbors keep burning it. Therefore, I try to give a little educative idea about the solution that probably could be done in the near time, firstly by optimizing the 3R of the "Pagi Sampah" program, so that the community will also feel very helped and benefited. The second is to be efficient, each household uses less electricity and uses fans rather than an air conditioner. The third is to eat smart to improve people's nutritional intake and reduce carbon emissions. The fourth is for the company industries, it is hoped that there will be efforts to negotiate and consider the use of renewable fuels such as solar energy. And last but not least, of course, the role of social agents such as education for the community is also an important thing, for example, Karang Taruna socializing with the community about the climate crisis and then the community itself do some contributions to understand and able to make changes as soon as possible.

4. Overall, how did our group working practices work effectively to produce the final product?
Final video:- https://vimeo.com/211290273
As a group, I believe that our biggest downfall was a lack of face-to-face communication. Our main source of communication was a group chat over Facebook messenger, and this proved helpful when organising and discussing pressing matters. However, I believe that in our meetings, we worked very well together and all benefitted from hearing each other’s ideas and research. After each meeting, I felt confident with our progress towards Committed and from hearing feedback on my individual work. I feel that, if we had had more meetings, our organisation would not have lacked so much, and we all would have felt more confident about the project.
Additionally, I would have preferred that we all stuck to the clear schedule that Ellie made at the start of pre-production. Although I completed each of my tasks on there, I personally didn’t make every deadline; and I know that this was a common factor within the group. Our poor organisation is evident within this fact, and also evident from our first attempt at filming the project. Also, not every task on the list was completed, and I feel that some of them, for example a public screening, would have really improved our final outcome.
Something I feel I could have personally improved on was my communication with Taruna. Considering Taruna was our director, I didn’t often speak directly to her about my vision and ideas for Committed. The only times I shared my ideas in-depth was during a couple of the meetings, and just before we filmed on the 20th of March. Had I spoken to her more throughout pre-production, I feel I would’ve understand her vision more clearly, and perhaps could’ve mixed that with my concept to create something better.
In addition to this, after seeing the final edit of Committed, I believe I should have filmed more footage. Mollie used many of the extra shots that we filmed, however I still feel there is a particular shot that is used and on-screen too often. Had I filmed further shots, this may have been avoided. Alternatively, perhaps I should have had more communication with Mollie to explain my visions and story board with more depth, so she could have experimented with using more shots between dialogue.
Despite our lack of communication, during the meetings we did have, I felt confident with the ideas that were shared and developed. I believe that everyone had equal contributions and every idea was listened to and contemplated.
Personally, I am happy with my contribution and outcome with my job role. I believe that the time I spent in pre-production researching and developing ideas was advantageous. Additionally, I feel that I learned a lot and my practice within my job role helped to create professional and idealistic shots, suited to the BBC.

3. What professional working practices were taken whilst filming the product on location?
Final video:- https://vimeo.com/211290273
The two actors we had casted were only available on the 17th of March, so our first attempt of filming began at 12pm on that day. However, as we began filming, it was clear that we were not prepared or organised for the day. The props hadn’t all been organised, and only four of us were present during filming. Additionally, the weather was extremely windy, which made it harder for Aja to pick up clear audio, and also meant that our actors were uncomfortable between takes. Due to these problems, we decided to organise another day to film. Personally, I feel that I wasn’t organised that day of filming, due to my lack of skills with the Sony NX5.
Mollie prepared two new actors, who were both sent the script to begin learning. We set the new filming day as the 20th of March, and our punctuality had clearly improved, as we had all the props necessary, and there five of us were present.
On our first filming day, we had booked a Sony NX5 out. Previous to this day, I had not spent a lot of time using the NX5 and I found it difficult to achieve what I wanted regarding depth of field with this camera. Additionally, as a lot of the shots were handheld, I found the NX5 difficult to handle. Therefore, on the 20th of March, I used my Nikon D5100, which I found much easier to shoot with; especially as I had already practised with the depth of field. Despite this, I feel that if I’d had more previous experience with the NX5, I could have used it to create the shots I wanted, whilst having clearer and higher quality footage.
As we were using the D5100, we were unable to connect the boom mic to it, similar to how you can with an NX5. Therefore, Aja used the boom mic separately, and recorded clear audio with it. To ensure it was fairly easy to sync in post-production, we ensured that someone clapped loudly before each take. My capability with the Nikon D5100 proved useful, as less time was wasted setting the camera up between shots, and I was able to easily create a shallow depth of field that I had envisioned.
In terms of individual contribution, I feel that everyone in the group provided what was necessary and filled their job roles effectively. I worked closely with Taruna throughout filming, who had an additional storyboard; we worked off of both of them and took extra shots to allow lots of freedom and experimentation during post-production. For myself, I felt organised and confident in myself whilst filming as my paperwork proved helpful whilst filming different shots.
Unfortunately, on the day, we were without Ellie, so Louis stepped in on the day as producer. Despite this, I feel that it would have been beneficial to have our Producer there to have organised and overlooked on the project.
