Hi Shelby, as someone who has seen a lot of tv shows and is a lover of rom-coms, I wanted your take on chemistry between actors/characters. With shows like The Summer I Turned Pretty and HSMTMTS airing around the same time, the discourse around actors having and not having chemistry has naturally picked up. I wondered what your take on the whole chemistry discussion is. I always see people say that chemistry is subjective, or that preference and bias for a certain ship plays a role in whether people see chemistry or not.
For example, TSITP, people rave at the chemistry between the actors who play Conrad and Belly, while saying Jeremiah and Belly don't have any. Yet, a large portion of people who watch say they do have great chemistry.
Same goes for HSMTMTS, you see fans and articles from other tv reviewers rave about the chemistry between Josh and Sofia while playing Ricky and Gina. But, you also have a large portion who feel like they don't have any chemistry or that Mack and Gina had more chemistry in lesser scenes. I had read some articles from other reviewers before the season aired to the public that loved Portwell but admitted that the chemistry between Ricky and Gina was undeniable. Other neutral ones said that the chemistry between the two was organic.
I know over the years creators and writers have come out and admitted that certain actors chemistry changed the plans for the their show (ex. Dawson's Creek with Joey and Pacey), causing them to go in a completely new direction.
Do you think all of this is just a simple answer as we're humans who have different opinions, with chemistry between actors being subjective, or do ship preference and bias come into play? Do you struggle with this being a tv reviewer, trying not to be biased based on your own personal preferences?
PS - I have read your articles over the seasons of HSMTMS and know you liked Ricky and Nini as well as Gina and EJ. So, because I know for sure that you watch the show, I also wondered what your thoughts were on Ricky and Gina's chemistry this season and overall. Did you feel like they had a lot of chemistry? Some? Not as much as others?
I appreciate if you do answer as I tend to ramble once I start writing, sorry about that lol
Sorry it's taken me a bit to answer this ask. I've been watching football all weekend, so I've been pretty absent from social media — unless I was posting about football.
But no apologies are necessary for the long ask. I appreciate your passion and the time it took to write this out. I'll answer it by each paragraph, so I don't miss anything.
Chemistry is interesting because it is often objective, but we often can't help but be subjective. Sometimes, if you prefer one relationship over another, you may see more chemistry between those actors than the ones that make up the other pairing. However, for the most part, I see chemistry as objective. People either have it or they don't — and with rom-coms that can make or break it all.
For instance, Your Place or Mine. I don't think Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon have all that much romantic chemistry, but I think Reese Witherspoon and Luke Wilson DO in Legally Blonde.
As for The Summer I Turned Pretty, I think all three actors are great. Genuinely. They all have chemistry. But a different kind of chemistry because every dynamic is built on different characters. At this point in Season 2, Belly and Conrad have a different chemistry than in Season 1. That fire still crackles between them, but Conrad is trying to fan the flame to keep it burning, but Belly is moving on because she doesn't know how Conrad feels.
Whereas with Jeremiah, he's only starting to open himself up to Belly again. That hesitance to letting her back in and Belly starting to see Jere differently than in Season 1 informs the actors' chemistry.
But if someone is so adamant about Belly/Conrad or Belly/Jeremiah being superior that they don't even entertain the idea of the other relationship or try to understand where the characters are coming from, then there may be some resistance to seeing the chemistry between the actors.
For HSMTMTS, I think the same remains true — mostly.
Joshua Bassett and Sofia Wylie DO have chemistry. That's part of what made Ricky and Gina's connection jump off the screen all the way back in 2019 in Season 1. Personally, I don't think Mack and Gina had romantic chemistry. They could've, but the show shut that down pretty quickly when Gina met Mack and he was quite rude. From then, they became good friends and that's all I got from them.
Bringing Portwell into it, Sofia Wylie and Matt Cornett also have great chemistry. But their chemistry is different than Wylie and Bassett's. And that's okay! That's what I like! That's what makes the dynamics different and more exciting to watch!
I, too, have read and listened to writers discuss how actors' chemistry can change plans and inform story, and I think that's just smart. It's smart to write towards an actor's strengths when you can.
So, yes, I do think everyone will always have different opinions about chemistry because there is such a passion and loyalty to romantic relationships. And sometimes that dedication makes it hard to see beyond it and look at the bigger picture.
As a critic and an aspiring TV writer, I try to be as subjective as possible. I have my preferences as a viewer, as anyone does. But when I'm reviewing a show or analyzing a theme in a feature, I try to be as subjective as possible and understand where all characters are coming from at all sides. I tried my best to do that in my HSMTMTS Season 4 review and my analysis of TSITP's love triangle after the first three episodes. I'll link those below in case you, or anyone else who may read this, wants to read them.
And thank you for reading my articles! That means A LOT.

Hi, how are you? This is kind of a random question but I was looking for a sweet romcom to watch and I was like, hey, maybe I ask you what YOUR favourite romantic comedy is?
What an AWESOME question, Nonny! Thank you so much for asking. And as it's my usual style to be shamelessly extra, I'm gonna list my top five and hope that my enthusiasm will be effective enough to sway anyone reading this to give some of them a viewing.
Tumblr media
Moonstruck - Romance & immediate attraction that strike like a thunderbolt out of the blue, set in an Italian-American community in NYC. Flavored by the backdrop of the opera La Traviata and a full December moon, this tale of finding a second great love moves like a whirlwind.
Tumblr media
And each time I watch it, I'm transported back to my grandparents' home by the same sights, textures, and indelibly Italian traditions I experienced in my childhood.
10 Things I Hate About You - A brilliant, witty retelling of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, set in a high school in the grunge era '90's. Young Heath Ledger, whose charisma is off the charts. An excellent soundtrack of contemporary music--with the addition of Cruel To Be Kind, which incorporates a key line from the play itself.
Tumblr media
Roxanne - A modernized version of Cyrano de Bergerac, with Steve Martin (who also wrote the screenplay) as the dashing but bulbously-nosed Fire Chief of a small Colorado resort town, who falls hard for Daryl Hannah's visiting astronomer. It's a glory of words, words, words, with poetry that inspires passion. Proof that love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind.
Tumblr media
And speaking of Daryl Hannah, I must give an honorable mention to the delightful Splash, a rom-com retelling of The Little Mermaid.
Bridget Jones's Diary - A modern woman's quest to find love despite a lifetime of disappointments. Bridget is 1,000% relatable (at least to this Hopeless Romantic😁). Patterned after Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice, it has one of the greatest they-finally-kiss scenes of all time, with a closing line by Bridget's Darcy that is so frickin' sexy, you just have to melt (while wishing your partner would say that same to you).
Tumblr media
Honorable mention to the sequel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.
Mamma Mia!/Mamma Mia, Here We Go Again! - How can I not make this a two-fer, with all the amazing opportunities to sing out loud, so so many ABBA hits? Plus, Colin Firth in a white dress shirt. And then a wet Colin Firth😁. But seriously, these films & their soundtracks have provided me inspiration for chapters of multiple fics. Most recently (relatively speaking) Andante, Andante--which proved pivitol for setting the mood for the lovemaking in Chapter 17 of Of Magic, Miracles, and Moonlight.
Tumblr media
I actually cried when I saw it sung in the movie the first time (oh heck, every time now) because it so captured the feelings I wanted to evoke that first time that my OFC, Teyla, and Stephen made love.
Thank you again, dear Nonny, for this chance to share some of my favorite romantic flicks! In fact, I have about fifeteen others I could easily add to the list, but perhaps I can elaborate upon them another day.

I propose a romance movie. It is called, "Romance Movie". And it's full of cliches but they go wrong. Like, you've got the main character who's fit for a cheesy romantic movie, like they move to the new town, break up with their boyfriend etc and are falling for the Love Interest. Only the Love Interest is this one dude-bro who keeps fucking things up.
Like in the I'm Not OK (I Promise) video where Frank is like "you know, you got something in your eye" and it looks like they're going to kiss but instead he plucks something out of the girl's eye. What if there was a full movie of that? Of 'you got something on your face' and the dude doesn't caress their face, he just scrubs it off and makes it worse. Of 'oh no, there's only one bed' but he's just like "nah man, it's all yours, I'm an insomniac". Of running to the airport just in time to stop the protagonist getting on the plane but the dude-bro is too puffed to say anything and just stands there wheezing for a minute while the main character watches.
I want t a full movie of romantic cliches gone stupid

27 Dresses (2008)
Tumblr media
While cynics may scoff at the tropes found within 27 Dresses – the couple who dislike each other at first, the obligatory lack of communication that causes the breakup, the moment the guy realizes he’s in love so he goes on a chase to get the girl, etc.  - those beats are what its intended audience want to see. A better criticism is the ridiculously contrived and improbable premise and the fact that, in the end, the picture is forgettable.
Jane Nichols (Katherine Heigl) has been a bridesmaid 27 times. In fact, she’s obsessed with weddings. While begrudgingly helping her younger sister Tess (Malin Åkerman) get ready for her own ceremony – during which she’ll be marrying Jane’s secret crush and boss, George (Edward Burns) – she meets cynical wedding columnist Kevin (James Marsden), who is secretly writing an article about the woman that is always a bridesmaid, but never a bride.
27 Dresses feels less like a movie and more like an excuse to have stuff happen. Jane has been instrumental in helping couples tie the knot since she was 8 years old… but what does she do for a living? She’s working in an advertising department. Her career path makes no sense, particularly considering she’s got no hobbies other than weddings. She’s crazy about them. She’s cutting out newspaper articles to keep, has held onto every single dress she’s ever worn as a bridesmaid, and keeps in touch with the women she helped along the years. That’s the first improbability of many we encounter. Some you can excuse because otherwise this plot wouldn’t happen. I wouldn't criticize Spider-Man for detailing the character’s origins, introducing a villain he’ll go up against, and ending in a big confrontation between the two. Similarly, I’m not going to tear apart 27 Dresses for following some of its genre's conventions… but my good will only goes so far. A woman like Katherine Heigl would hardly have trouble ensnaring a man. Compare this story to another written by Aline Brosh McKenna: The Devil Wears Prada. Where’s the wit, the subtlety, the subversions?
There’s not much else to say about 27 Dresses. The leads have decent chemistry. If you like seeing pretty outfits, there’s a nice montage of them about halfway though. These do not make up for the lack of romance, sweetness, or laughs you would expect from a rom-com. I suppose it could be entertaining to show this picture to easily enraged feminists, as every single woman in this film (save for Melora Hardin’s character) has no other ambitions in life besides finding a man, getting him to propose, and then living the rest of her life blissfully married. You might get some laughs if you jump through those hoops, but not many, and you'd have to suffer through it too, so who's winning, really?
The only thing memorable about 27 Dresses is its ridiculous premise. Even if you are the kind of person who would see beyond its flaws and enjoy the film, you won’t remember it a week after the credits roll. (Full-screen version on DVD, November 15, 2017)

So is my soul mate supposed to think this is cute?
Rom-coms are filled with people who do something very annoying or unsexy and then they meet someone who falls in love with THAT thing they do. So I began thinking of my worst acts.
Aside from being tremendously stubborn and with an irritating need to provide an answer when someone has a doubt (even if it's an answer based on speculation I WILL FIND IT) I'd say my worst "fault" (I mean is it really...?) Is being an incredibly HANGRY and tired person.
I have several housemates. They can count with the fingers of one hand how often have they EVER, in years living together, seen me before noon. Even if I didn't have work. And the reason is I wake up angry at the universe. I'm in such horrible mood in the mornings, tired, pissed off at my alarm and at any uninteresting dreams and at my immediate hunger (which quickly makes me hangry), that I avoid humanity until noon if I can. I wake up in full Bermuda triangle: hungry, angry and tired. Essentially a toddler. And if ever I'm allowed to stay hungry for longer than an hour or two, I become scary.
It's funny because my mates consider me the chirpy, smiley one. And it's all due to a good strategy (schedule only applicable in non working days):
5-8 AM get up, wash face, get dressed, eat as much and as immediately as possible.
7-10 AM go jogging in such a way that housemates don't see me yet.
9-12 AM second breakfast.
12 AM show up a chirpy, happy person.
13.00 start making lunch and eating.
14-16 lunch done, mini nap done, I'm as happy and smiley as could be, my housemates are still happily oblivious to my morning mood.
However, I was twice caught in the morning, thus providing two funny reactions to my morning grumpiness:
1st time: housemate asked me if I felt all right, if I had allergies.
2nd time: different housemate asked me what was wrong. I replied I hated the world for waking me up.
I have also found one way to wake up happy:
1. Housemates cooking full English breakfast downstairs.
2. When you're dreaming of food and then you wake up and you realise there's a bit of that in the kitchen.
Yes I'm a little food centric.

While y’all are obsessing over Charlie Lastra (agreed), Josh Templeman (I get it), and Adam Carlsen (just couldn’t get into the book, but I understand the appeal with the concept), I’m still waiting for someone to love Noah Agnew with me.

'Anyone But You' Review
#AnyoneButYou Review: "Apart from Sweeney and Powell being incredibly attractive, it was their natural chemistry and banter that made this engaging and charming. It feels like an early 2000s rom-com and that's not a bad thing."
By: Amanda Guarragi There was a time when a good old-fashioned romantic comedy would come out in theatres, and word of mouth would spread. Rom-coms are known to be cheesy, with grand gestures, witty banter, and a declaration of love at the end. These conventions make up the genre. And sometimes, a textbook film with great chemistry will make audiences happy to watch a romantic comedy in theatres…
